Phone fell into some water, and kept on working after taking it apart and drying it off (I did not turn it off for any extended period of time, or do the rice thing yet). Then later I realized it was not charging. This was in the car, so what I did was take it apart and pointing the heat on it for the remainder or my commute for about 30 minutes. Then it started charging again. This was 3 days ago. Then yesterday I did turn off the phone during Star Wars and when I got back to the car it would not charge again.
Go home and put it in rice for about two hours, charged again. I plugged it last night and it was charging as I fell asleep. This morning, not charging again.
The phone is now going to sit in rice for about 2 days, which I use either an iPhone 5s or my old HTC Rezound.
What I am wondering is anyone has experience with this, and might have any advice, or anything else to help out.
I am on a device payment plan and do not have the cash to outlay to pay it off and get an upgrade. I've considered a Moto X Pure on Swappa...but once again...do not really have the money to spend (holidays and was forced to move)
Unfortunately the damage probably can't be undone. Next time turn off immediately and dry for 24 hours.

So far so good after about 40 hours in rice.
And worst case buy an external charger and battery from amazon for $30. That's what I am currently doing after frying my usb port in a similar way. Sd card to transfer files and two extra batteries.

My Evo won't power on at all... no lights on when plugged in, and my PC doesn't see it either. I've tried different USB cables, and I've tried charging from a regular outlet... still nothing. I pulled the battery for about 10 minutes, and still nothing.
It was working perfectly yesterday.. even consistently getting 30+ hours on a charge. I had about 10% battery left when I went to bed.. I plugged in my USB cable before going to bed, and I remember for sure seeing the charge light come on when I plugged it in. When I woke up (late because my phone is my alarm), it was dead.
I have a friend with an Evo, and I'd like to try his battery before taking it in..gonna do that in an hour or so. I just want to do all the troubleshooting I can before taking it in to let some idiot look at it. The phone shouldn't work with the power cord plugged in, but no battery.. right? So would a completely bad battery show the same symptoms I have?
And if it is a bad phone, does anyone have any experience with Radio Shack's warranty? I bought their 1 year warranty when I bought my Evo on launch day. Should I expect to walk out with a new Evo, or should I expect a loaner phone and a wait while they ship off my Evo? Is Radio Shack going to ask or care that it's rooted? Since it doesn't power on, they can't tell in the store.. but if they ask me, I'm not sure if I can lie with a straight face.

The phone does not work just hooked up to a charger without a battery so it's completely possible that your issue is the battery and it definitely sounds like it.
I don't have any history with Radioshack's warranty but I would suggest trying your friends battery first, if that resolves the issue then when you take it in they will just replace the battery which shouldn't require them to even boot the phone.
I tried my friend's battery and it worked. Went to Radio Shack and told them what was up, and after a 30 minute phone call, they were able to give me a replacement battery. Problem is, it's not an HTC battery and it's only 1100mAh. I mentioned the difference, and was told that's all they could do for me today and if I'm not happy with the battery I can come back and they'll take care of me. Had the guy not been so nice I probably would have thrown a fit, but either way, I have a working phone now so I'm happy. And unless I misunderstood, I think my 12 month plan got reset for the battery, so if the replacement dies within a year I can get another one.

Glad to hear it went well.
I would push getting a stock battery for two reasons:
1) That's 25% smaller and thus your battery life is going to be significantly less.
2) Batteries are not all created equal and it's likely that what they gave you could be a cheapie.
I've been running one of the chinese cheapies for five months. It's a 3500 and it last all day with heavy use. I think I paid 17 dollars for it. The extended seidio I bought for my treo fried in a month.

The battery they gave me is a Digital Energy brand. It came up for the first time at 54%. 4 hours of moderate use later, it's down to 39%. I'm going to run with it for a week and if I can make it 24 hours on a charge, I don't think I'm going to worry about it. If it can't get through a full day, I'll call and see what Radio Shack can do for me. If they give me any trouble, I'll probably just shell out the money for a good battery and keep this one as a spare.
I'll post an update once I've used this battery long enough to give it a fair review..

Just keep in mind that the battery they gave you is 27% smaller and therefore will very likely not last as long as the stock battery.
My phone did this exact same thing this morning. I even had it plugged in last night and was charging fine. When I awoke my phone was off and would not turn on. After about an hout of trying to get it to charge with no luck. I then borrowed the wifes phone to call sprint. I left the phone plugged in and what do you know as soon as the lady answers the flashing orange light comes on and after a minuit of that a steady orange light. Haven't had any problems before or after this event. But the lady at sprint told me it was the charging port and i would need to take my phone in for a replacement.
I had the same problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16398845
Powered off the phone and went to bed. No sign of problems, battery life has been great, 50% charge on the phone. Woke up and it wouldn't budge. Took me a minute to figure out that it was the battery. Once I did, went to the Sprint store and they tested it, confirming it was dead. They replaced it quickly, no questions, no charge.

Prior to this incident have had no problems with this phone.
Was out jogging with my phone in an arm band listening to pandora when all of a sudden my phone died. Didn't think much of it until I got back and it was extremely hot (in the bottom back near usb input). Plugged it into my charger and started it back up. Once on, it would not get to 100% charge. And again, was extremely hot. Once I took it off of the charger, the phone immediately died. Thought I might have gotten the battery wet from sweat, so I ordered two new batteries. Once those came, I charged those up with a direct battery charger then tried to put them into the phone. They both lasted a total of 15 minutes before being depleted. I have turned off all syncing and all background data. When I try to connect my phone to my computer to RUU, it asks me to scan and fix the drive.
Any suggestions?

Plug it in to the wall outlet and see if you are charger AC.. I had a problem with my charger port where no matter what I connected it to, it would charge very slowly and only at USB.. Even when it would say 90 percent, it would die a short time after, when rebooted it would show no battery left... Not sure if this is your problem, but figured I would share my experience... Ended up getting a replacement after the techs looked at it...
Try taking a good quality qtip (less chance of shredding bits of cotton off) and 91% isopropyl alcohol and cleaning the charging port out carefully also clean the battery terminals in the phone, Sweat contains salt which will deposit after the sweat evaporates and salt is both corrosive and conducive so if there is any in the port or on the terminals it can cause a short

I need some help.
I was charging my Epic4G Touch last night - it was around 40 percent, and I was going to spend all day out, so I wanted it fully charged. The phone gets a little warm when it charges, but that's normal. Well, I feel asleep, and I guess I was tired enough to put the phone underneath both of my pillows, aaaaand a fuzzy blanket.
I woke up this morning to the phone practically on fire - it was insanely hot, and it wouldn't turn on. I disassembled the phone - took the case off, took off the battery cover, and took the flaming hot battery out. After letting it cool down, I tried putting it back together, and the phone won't turn on. I tried plugging the phone into it's charger again, and the blue light flashes, the screen flashes on and shows the empty battery icon, then almost instantly turns off. The light itself is really dull.
I don't know what to do. Has anyone else had this problem, or have any ideas? I'm going to try again in a few minutes, but I'm in New York right now (I live in CT, USA), so I can't visit the Sprint Store with the owner of the line.

Hate to say it, but it sounds like the charger could have eaten your phone. I bought an E4GT about a year ago and the first thing I did was ditch the charger. Weird charge times and rendered the phone unusable while it was charging (would act erratically, charging resyults were inconsistent,
For me, this was corrected when I picked up another charger with the correct specs (5v, .7 amps). I stayed with OEM, but blew past the sprint store to avoid the ridiculous charges. Here are two that I picked up from Amazon:
OEM Travel charger (use at home):
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Trave...4786445&sr=1-1&keywords=epic+4g+touch+charger
OEM Car charger:
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Trave...4786445&sr=1-1&keywords=epic+4g+touch+charger
They are very reasonably priced and I've not had any other issues.
In your case, however, you may want to take phone and charger into Sprint, as it sounds as if your phone may have suffered damage. If you get a new phone (via warranty or insurance), I would recommend getting one or both of the above chargers. Together, these two items are still much cheaper than one bought from Sprint.

I had a similar incident where my power was out & charged with my phone in my car (bad move but wasn't thinking in all the frenzy) and the same thing happened to my phone.. I pulled the battery let my phone sit for a while (a few hours) to cool off and it was back to normal.. You might want to try that, well give it a little longer.. I may have been lucky though

Well, after a day, things seem to be normal. I had to leave the battery out and alone for about 3 hours, but after, when I plugged it in, it started to charge again. So far, everything seems normal, including the battery life, so that's good.
Thanks to both of you. I don't think it was the charger, but picking up another charger is never a bad thing.
Check and see if the sides of your battery are bulged out at all. You should not be able to spin it on a table top for example. If it is at all, you should replace the battery.
Just make sure you spin it clockwise, if you spin it counterclockwise Steve Jobs well poltergeist out of your closet and eat your Epic touch.
He's still out for revenge.

Last night my phone died after 2 days off cable due to me having to use my cord for another device. I plugged it in today to find that it wasn't charging at all. I decided to give it a few minutes before trying, thinking it may not be turning on because it still needs some juice. I waited 30 minutes and it wouldn't turn on still, just gave me the little animation of a battery draining to indicate that it needs to be charged. After this, I figured that it's possible the cable is just dead, so I opted to borrow a cable from my brother. The cable charges his phone just fine, but it doesn't work with charging my phone. I took a shower while waiting for it to perhaps get the juice it needed, and still no dice. I tried several different outlets thinking perhaps the outlet was dead, and still nothing.
I've had the phone for a little over a month, so I'm not sure how long I have to turn it in or not; I'd hope it'd be 3 months for factory issues, but judging from how people mention 14 days, I'd assume that they're eager to push responsibility of broken devices onto the customer as fast as they can. Do you guys have any idea of what could be wrong? Perhaps if it's possible for me to get a replacement at this point?
I've been running the Lifeless v.11 Rom for a while with no issues, I haven't flashed anything in possibly a week or two, so I honestly doubt this is a software issue. It's never been exposed to water, but then again I really don't trust phones to detect if they've been damaged or not since it seems even a humid day is enough for those small water damage detection stickers to run pink.

Yea, going to update this. Sprint was giving me issues and trying to cough up money from me, so I pulled the battery and cleaned the port with a q-tip and it charged fine again. I was in for a scare there, but it's back to life.
Same problem...didn't have to pull battery

Just wanted to chime in with my experience.
I had same issue. Battery completely drained with a visit to the relatives (low cell signal).
Got home and plugged it in for 5min, the "battery charging" animation came on when short pressing the power button.
Had to move the phone to a different charger for the night and noticed that I couldn't get it to even show the charging animation while on the charger. Indeed after 8 hours on the charger the next morning it still wouldn't turn on. I thought I would have to take it back to Best Buy. On a whim, I thought I would drain all of the capacitance from the system by pressing and holding the power button to see if that would allow it to restart the charge cycle. So I held the power button for about 30-45sec off the charger, then waited about 30min and plugged it in at work.
It worked. Not sure why, but I didn't have to return it to Best Buy, so I'm happy.
I got my charging port a little wet today. No submersion, just got splashed. Ever since then, for the last few hours the phone has been shutting down randomly. Once it went to the factory flash mode which was interesting. Giant blue circle with a "waiting for connection, do not power down during flashing" warning. That was interesting. The phone intermittently will try to take a charge but will shut down after about 10-15 min of charging.
I'm sure it'll be fine once it fully dries out overnight but still, a word of warning to those who get theirs wet. I never had this issue with my note 8 which I would weekly take in the pool for my daughter's swim lessons which meant for about 30 minutes it was fully underwater 2-3 ft. With this just taking a splash and misbehaving this badly, I don't even want to try that.
I put mine in the filled up sink just to scare my wife, and no issues FWIW...

That's very odd. How long after the port got wet did you plug in a charger? It sounds like something happened when charging possibly. Getting this phone wet should not cause any issues like you described. Unless maybe the port was still a little wet when it was plugged in.

A couple hours but it was doing it before I plugged in a charger (and after). It's been fine since last night though.
Was it fresh water or salt water?

Watch TV while taking a shower and no problems. Aaahh... Taking a shower and watching TV, so nice
Mine got water splashed too, at first I thought it was nothing because it kept working perfectly, but then I tried to plug in my headphones (with the usb-c/3.5mm adaptor) and they were not working properly. They function, but it's like if certains sounds were not capture by it, like voices. Is it possible that it's just still a little wet, and I need to dry the port out somehow? Or is it that maybe one of the pins on the USB port are now broken and I need to replace it?
