[Q] Some questions to flash a custom rom

I am going to flash the rom - Pure AOSP 4.4.2 Alpha2 for my Xperia S.
My phone isn't rooted and unlocked.
I didn't flash any rom before so I want to ask questions to ensure I won't brick my phone.
I have read some tutorials about flashing rom, mainly, the article.
Questions:
a. Do I have to unlock the bootloader?
b. I have a guide to flash the rom as follows. Is it right?
-------------the guide-------------
1. backup everything
2. unlock the bootloader if necessary
3. root the phone
4. Install CWM recovery
5. download rom, kernel, google apps .zip file
6. copy the .zip file to SD card
7. enter recovery mode
8. wipe data factory reset, wipe cache partition and wipe dalvick cache
9. install rom zip from SD card
10. install google apps package from SD card
11. reboot system now
---------------------------------------
c. There are 6 .zip files in the thread as follows. What is the order to install those?
------------the file in that thread------------
Alpha1:
normal: pure_aosp_alpha1.zip
bm native: kernel system
bm loop: kernel system
Alpha2:
normal: upgrade
bm native: upgrade
bm loop: upgrade
------------------------------------------------------
Thanks!
yes a unlock bootloader is needed, otherwise you will brick your device
yes folowing the guide is recomended
and finaly bm_native or loop is for dualboot,
install normalure_aosp_alpha1.zip
then normal:upgrade
any other questions ask!!

no you have to install cwm separately (Q:do you even know what cwm is?)
a rom comes with its own kernal, it could be stock or modded one, depending on the rom you are installing

I guess you are a newbie in rooting town
And here i am your friendly neighborhood spider - man
So first of all after rooting
You need to install cwm recovery on the device which will let you download or flash Roms easily
The best recovery for canvas 4 is
The one built by master awesome
Here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2739053
You would find the method of flashing it in the post itself
Now once you have flashed cwm recovery all you need is a good rom
I would suggest you to wait until nero d launches his upcoming color os 2 Rom which is going to be awesome
Here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2804715
Now you have your powers and tools as well but what is the best way of flashing once you boot up in cwm
By holding the power and both volume keys while phone is switched off, then select recovery mode
Easy
1. Always backup your stock rom by cwm
2.wipe data / factory reset
3. Wipe cache partition
4. In mounts and storage select format system
5.install rom/ zip via sd card
6. Reboot and enjoy

Try Odin > (uncheck "reboot") TWRP
then vol down + home + power when screen goes black, keep holding power and home button but slide your finger to volume up. It should boot into TWRP

You should have put SuperSu before into your device storage, allow modification when twrp ask you to and then install SuperSu. Installing SuperSu will take you out of the bootloop. Installing only twrp and allowing modifications always gets you to bootloop until you install SuperSu.
