How to root brand new Nexus with 6.0.1 - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hey all, as the title says, is there a good way to root a brand new Nexus 7 with 6.0.1? I just got one after a pretty good groupon deal ($100) and the device OTAed up to 6.0.1. Thanks for any help.

Allready tried the Nexus Root Toolkit?!

The Nexus Root Toolkit will do it. I got my N7 from GroupOn, I flashed the OTA 6.0.1. I then had trouble rooting it because when you get to the point where you are suppose to install SuperSU and BusyBox they do not show up in the folder. This is because there is a problem with that version of TWRP and the new updated hardware in this version of N7. You will need to install a modified version of TWRP. Then root it with NRT will work.
The modified version can be gotten through this link. *** Just in case the link will not work, I do not know if I have enough post to be able to post links yet http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-7-2013/nexus-7-2013-qa/mount-recovery-t3064562
Be sure to pick the correct version if you have the same unit as I then it will be the Wi-Fi version. I do not think that GroupOn is selling the LTE version.
Good luck! I am very happy with this Nexus 7, it will save cell phone battery and save my eyes as well.

May I ask something as well?
For a nexus, flashing a custom kernel requires root or unlock bootloader?
What is the use of unlock bootloader on a nexus device?
I came from a sony phone and that require unlocking bootloader to install custom kernel..not so sure about nexus.

Well you need to unlock your bootloader in order to root. I think you do need to unlock. But unlocking the bootloader is super easy so I don't see a reason not to.

BE CAREFUL of updates. Newer updates change the touchscreen driver!
If the touchscreen is working perfectly out of the box, DON'T UPDATE OTA.
If it works out of the box, I would recommend not updating and/or just flashing an updated custom rom without the touchscreen updates.

Is there an "official" 4.4.2 zip for Nexus 7 2013 Flo?

Hello xda developers!
So I had a quick question that I am really hoping that someone here can help me out with...
I have my N7 2013 32GB WiFi only model FLO tablet running Android 4.4 rooted (of course) with Multirom installed.
Okay so when I rooted my N7 I flashed the kexec kernel patch so I could install Ubuntu Touch...not knowing that Ubuntu Touch is only available for the N7 2012 tablet. So a few days after installing the kexec-patch an upgrade was available for Nexus 7. I tried installing the 4.4.2 upgrade but I knew that it was not going to work....
What I am wondering is, is there a way I can download the official ROM for the Nexus 7 (I want the official) and flash it with TWRP and Multirom? Will Multirom allow you to flash to the "internal" ROM?
If I can flash an offical nexus 7 flo rom I can then just root it again with the Nexus Root Toolkit.
I have done a lot of work with other ROMs on my Nexus 7 tablet that I have installed with MultiRom and I really don't want to have to erase everything just to put the official 4.4.2 upgrade on my N7. Yet...I really want the upgrade because I have heard they fixed a lot of issues with the camera.
Has anyone uploaded an apk for the official Nexus 7 4.4.2 camera app? If I can't flash an "official" nexus 7 flo ROM could I just install the camera apk from the Nexus 7 4.4.2 update?
I am really hoping someone can point me in the right direction here...
On a personal note I just want to say how much I enjoy this place and I am so thankful for xda and all the amazing work contributed by the developers and testers. Thank you all so much!
You all are the reason I will never buy an iPad or iPhone!
I thank you all for your time and your assistance.

You can download factory images here. https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images#razor
The included flash-all.bat will also restore the stock recovery, but you can always flash TWRP afterward. Someone else will have to chime in about MultiROM, which I've never used.
Pandae thanks so much for the reply...
I will check the link out further when I get home.
I am really looking for something like an official OTA zip that I can flash where I can keep my other installed ROMs with twrp and Multirom.
If anyone has done anything like that please let me know...
Thanks again,
Droidshadow

stock kernel for 4.4?
I am thinking now that maybe if i can get a hold of the stock kernel for the Nexus 7 on Android 4.4 i could re-flash the stock kernel to remove the kexec-patch and then i could apply the official OTA update to 4.4.2
Does anyone think this would work?
Does anyone happen to know where I might be able to get the stock kernel for the Nexus 7 FLO for Android 4.4?
Thank you all so much for your time...

I haven't seen a flashable zip for the stock 4.4 kernel. If you have adb setup you can extract the boot image from inside the factory image and fastboot flash that. Did you make a backup (nandroid) after you rooted? Of course you did! Just restore "Boot" from your backup made with TWRP. To get the OTA to work your "system" will also need to be stock and you need to have stock recovery. If you don't have stock recovery and you have TWRP for instance you can flash the OTA zip with TWRP. At the very least your system and kernel will have to be stock to get an OTA to work. Edit: I just saw this ROM Stock Rooted 4.4.2 - KOT49H and it looks like you have to flash the bootloader seperatley. Flash the ROM and bootloader with TWRP.

Hello, There is a way to download the stock ROM. I will leave a link and a tutorial on how to install it below. If you just want to flash it with TWRP then copy the .zip to your flash drive or whatever. I prefer to use fastboot because then I can flash only certain parts of the update and preserve my root. Hope this helps.

[TOOL] HTC One 2014 (M8) All-In-One Toolkit V12 [4-19-2014] [PERM ROOT]

I'm going to maintain only one thread (universal thread), since its easier to manage. My toolkit supports this model. Download links and info are in the link below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699065
V1.0.1 Released! 4-8-2014
- Added Support for Sprint (Use ClockWorkMod for the recovery)
- Clarified some steps to make it easier to understand
- Fixed some grammar errors
Download is in Post 2.
V2.0 Released! 4-19-2014
- Added Philz CWM for GSM models
- Updated TWRP to official builds for Sprint/GSM variants
- Added a few S-Off commands for those who have S-Off
- Cleaned the code up a little bit
Nice!
Thanks for bringing your awesome work to this model! I used your toolkit on my old incredible 4g. I will be checking this out next weekend when I have a day off. Strong work, you're a solid dev :good:

i googled for 64 bit version in case this one from toolkit is 32 bit but no luck.
Does anyone have a stock boot.img for 1.57 or flashable zip of the kernel?
I just bought my m8 on Friday, it came fully updated. Does this toolkit support me still?

Assuming you are at 4.4.4 (because reboots were supposed to be fixed in 4.4.3), the only real advice I can give, is to backup whatever you care about (you can use Helium from Koushik, does not need root), and do a factory reset, reinstall the OS from factory images, if it still happens and it's under warranty, send it back.
I am still 4.3

If you mean can you use another ROM for a different device, no. There is maybe one exception , people have reported that they have flashed flo ROM onto deb (minus a working radio), and assuming this works, it is a anomaly, and I still would not recommend someone do it, even if it does work.
If you mean a new version meant for your device, then yes, of course you can.

I still don't understand, I think we're having a language barrier issue or something, you specified which build you're going to use (4.4.4 KK for flo) then you say you're going to use a different build, which is it?
If you have a N7 2013 wifi device, then flashing 4.4.4 for N7 2013 wifi ROM is OK, and will not cause issues.

New device galaxy s6 {root not} or {update & root}

Hey folks I've just now upgraded to this device and have been a dev for write some time now but mostly for HTC. My firmware and kernel are predated may of 2015 so I'd like to get suggestions from users that have had experience with the s6. What I'm looking to do is sim unlock, root, run twrp recovery, and eventually build roms for this device. So where should I start, take the update first, then sim unlock, root, & recovery, or do all of this now before I update my firmware using the ota? I've read that we can access root with 5.0.2 & 5.1.1 but what's your opinion? I would rather not trip my Knox but it's not a deal breaker if I do, since I own my device. Thanks in advance for your input. Oh and I'm not a noob and have read all the threads here. It's just a little confusing where to start since the device has been out a while now. You're all ahead of my game a little bit. Lol

Just do it all now. The 5.1.1 update isnt huge.
Will I just have to flash the updated firmware and rom to get the 5.1.1 if I do it all now?

Just updated today. It is an excellent guide.
Well an update here. The build that came with my device was not listed anywhere as rootable or unlockable. What I did find was info stating to update my device to get a newer version that would be workable. After that update my device still had a version that nobody could do anything with yet. Looks like I'll just have to wait it out or get another device before my 14 days are up.
