I recently flashed my HTC One M8 back to stock Android 5.0.1 and Sense 6, I also rooted my phone. Later I got a notification to upgrade to Android 6.0,after downloading it tells me I have an android "system version variant", and it won't let me apply the update. I've checked /cache for the OTA zip to flash using custom recovery but its not there... Please is there any solution to this problem.
I am using the unlocked version of the One M8.
Thanks in advance...
Yeah you need a stock (never rooted) rom, kernel and recovery. Otherwise ota will keep failing.

First of all, apologies for such a question.
Im lost. Its been a long time since i browsed through this forum. I have my at&t m8 running slimkat 4.4.4 and twrp 2.8.1.0. Cant seem to update twrp, stuck on entering recovery. Right now i would like to update to lollipop but i dont knw where to start. Can someone please pin point me the procedures. What i need to do prior. Thanks in advance.
Update: I followed the guide to upgrade via fastboot. Successfully installed but every time I install a lollipop Rom I don't have signal. The only way I get signal back is if I revert with a nandroid backup sense. Under software info in settings my imei doesn't show up
Any help would be appreciated

Have you checked the at&t subforum here for the M8, did you check the stock backup and firmware thread in the general section ?
Get a official stock backup, preferably a lower based one than your software is numbered now and update via official HTC updates again.

I don't think AT&T firmware will ever allow you to install lollipop. Your S-off convert your phone to Developer edition and you can update all the way to 4.16.1540.8

If you were rooted, then simply unrooting won't allow you to install OTA updates. You need to flash a completely untouched system image. You can either do this by restoring a backup image you or someone else made or by flashing a ruu.
See this post for more details.
Sent from my HTC One M9 using Tapatalk
Do you get an error7 when the OTA tries to update - it will say something about system partition is modified/RW? TWRP modifies the system partition when you first run it - you get prompted to modify; ensure you only allow it AFTER a stock backup, after the OTA.
If so, you will need to flash the '/system' partition. took me hours to realise my /system partition files were still modified even after applying a backup (which had modified /system files as i allows TWRP updates before i took the backup)
Grab the system.emmc.win file from your STOCK image, and flash manually in download mode.
fastboot flash system system.emmc.win

Hi friends, I am getting notifications to update my M8 to marshmallow. Its with unlocked bootloader, rooted and with S-OFF and running stock rom.Currently its running Android 5.0.1 with Htc sense version 6.0 on a Rogers(canadian) network. Will it be safe to update it to marshmallow? Will i be able to root it afterwards?Any suggestions please? Thanks
You will need an unrooted (never rooted) stock Rogers ROM, and corresponding stock recovery, in order to update by OTA.
Otherwise, there haven't been any issues reported (such as root) with Marshmallow. Root requires a newer version SuperSU (2.51 or later), but otherwise there aren't any major issues.

Nope, unrooting won't work OTA will still fail). I specified never rooted for that reason.
You can use a TWRP backup, if you made one before rooting. Otherwise, you'll need to find a stock (unrooted) TWRP backup on the forums.

I'm not sure what you are asking. You can't run the OTA as-is, in order to return to stock ROM, if that is what you mean. This will fail for the same reason a Marshmallow OTA will fail (due to modified software) in addition that version check will probably also make it fail (you can't OTA to the same version already on the phone).
You might be able to extract the ROM for the zip file. But this can be risky, too. Its best you find a previously posted TWRP backup of the stock ROM; or ask someone to post it.

Thanks redpoint!! Please bear with me due to my limited knowledge.I have my own twrp back up which i made just after i got the phone and before doing anything but its an year old backup.I think at that time it was android 4.4.3.But after that my phone took 3 OTA updates. So i can i still use my old stock android 4.4.3 TWRP backup?

That one is probably too old. The backup needs to match your firmware (hboot, radio, etc.) or at least be close.

What part about never rooted do you not understand???
Stop trying to invent ways around it. You can dance around and cluck like a chicken if you want, it still won't make a previously rooted ROM never rooted.
You've been told the proper way to proceed.

Hi Guys,
i have a rooted device and i modified it to be US Unlocked.
when i'm installing OTA (Root Removed for OTA, stock boot & recovery), i get this:
"/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/system has been remounted r/w" reflash
ideas?
Your system was mounted, so HTC won't let you upgrade by OTA. Try using RUU provided on the HTC website since you're on US unlock.

Hi,
This guide is based in my first post about how to do it with the Moto G4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4/how-to/guide-simple-ota-update-rooted-unlocked-t3510126
(Read it for full info).
Then, here the updated info for the Moto G5+:
1) If you are in NPN25.137-33 and like to apply the last OTA, but you have rooted and/or flashed a custom recovery (TWRP) + custom kernel, then you can.
2) Requirements: original SYSTEM and BOOT partitions. If you have flashed another version, then restore the originals. You can use any backups from you, or you can download from here: http://drive.google.com/open?id=0B6-Tz_7kDyxsZnVNa0pldnhndG8
(Thank you to GtrCraft: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=72387571&postcount=15)
3) To apply the OTA download this ZIP and install it from the TWRP recovery (it's not required to have the TWRP flashed, you can start it from the fastboot util): http://www.sendspace.com/file/7w75rw
This file is the original OTA (shared by the user olive23) and patched by me to remove the check for the fingerprint of the running firmware. Then it can run over the TWRP.
Warning: Don't install this OTA if you don't have the exact version of the required firmware.
4) After install the OTA, reboot and check the new version. At that point the ROM isn't rooted. Then, you need to re-root.
That's all!
Tried flashing and it fails.

I have the same US model and this is supposed to be for it but it didn't work for me either, got errors during flash of OTA zip in TWRP that various partitions weren't accessible &/or verifiable. Even tried it a second time after a full restore to stock and had similar errors. I restored SYSTEM too (not sure that our rooting process works for systemless yet, meaning it would change SYSTEM), so that wasn't the problem in my case. Restored stock again and will wait to see if I get OTA normally.

US variant XT1687 4/64GB on Sprint but no OTA notification. Maybe I should just wait another week before flashing this. Not sure if there is something in the SIM the server notices and stops updates on some carriers. But maybe the SIM is how they decide, not sure what else they could go by other than IP to detect the carrier.

I also have XT1687 4/64G US on 25.137-33 + root & TWRP, and no OTA notification.
So, is there a way to go to -67 (flash over TWRP, restore back to -15 stock)?
I could not understand the right answer from all the thread on the subject.
Sorry for this noob question: I have just rooted a brand new phone. After the first login the OTA warning popped out so I downloaded it. When finished I got a loop on the recovery; I fastbooted boot and got my phone working again ... what do I have to do? Thanks.
