Restore KitKat Nandroid Backup with Lollipop Bootloader - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have upgraded from KitKat to Lollipop on my T805. However, before upgrade I forgot to copy out some files that I have saved in Private Mode. Now I would like to restore them. Fortunately, before upgrade I have created nandroid backup of my KitKat system in TWRP. (I have backed up everything except Cache and Recovery.) Now I would need to go back to restore my KitKat backup temporarily.
Can I just restore nandroid backup of KitKat in TWRP when I am on Lollipop Bootloader? Or will I need to flash KitKat Bootloader first? If so, where can I find one? I have tried to search forums for KitKat T805XXU1AANFB Bootloader, but I was not successful. I found only unlocked bootloaders at https://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ but I am not sure if it is safe to flash them. I don't care about tripping knox since it's been already tripped.
Thanks in advance for you advice.

No need to downgrade bootloader.

Great, I'll try to restore then.

I'm not sure why you'd need to restore though. Why can't you access your private files via lollipop, dont you have the same setup?

The files are not available in Lollipop. In KitKat, I had rooted stock ROM. As for Lollipop, I have installed IronROM. This ROM has secure storage disabled. I guess this could be the reason why the files are not available. Another reason could be that in installing IronROM I had to do clean install (only sdcard was not wiped).

Are the files stored in a certain folder? When you say secure storage do you mean it got limited access to a folder? if yes that's easy to fix

Surely if you're rooted you can access these files anyway?
Also the ro.securestorage.support =false flag is a simple ramdisk or build.prop edit or just flash a stock kernel this will re-enable secure storage.

I'm not sure how the Private Mode works exactly. I just know that when I enter the Private Mode, a new "root" folder is mounted in Samsung's "My Files" file manager. Also, in the "storage" folder a new folder appears, namely "private". When I tried to find the files while the private mode was turned off, I was not able to find them. In my current Lollipop ROM (which has secure storage disabled), there is also a folder named "privatemode" in the "mnt/shell" folder. The "privatemode" folder contains the files that probably appears in private mode. But I can' tell for sure since the names of the files are encrypted and I guess their content is also encrypted.
However, I am not sure if these files were visible also in my KitKat ROM with secure storage enabled. And I don't know if the files could be used (decrypted), if they would be simply copied into the new ROM.

Possibly, but I didn't know where to find them. Now I know I would look into mnt/shell folder, and if there was some content in the privatemode folder, I would give it a try and copied them into the new ROM.

While it is probably true, in the ROM description it is stated that secure storage enabled doesn't work with Xposed Framework. Probably it was also true on KitKat. When I wanted to enter Private Mode, I had to uninstall Xposed, restart the device, do what I needed in Private Mode, install Xposed back and restart to get the framework activated. Not very handy Now, with secure storage disabled, I can use Private Mode together with Xposed Framework. :victory:

Anyway, since I considered restoring backup quite easy and definite way how to get my files back, I have already done it. Since I was at work, I didn't have time to tinker around, but I had a plenty of time to do restore/backup thing. Now, I am already back on my Lollipop, having the missing files restored. Everything works just as before.
------------------
I would like to also share my experience with restoring the backup. Interestingly, after restoring the backup of KitKat system, not everything went smoothly. For example, the internal storage was not properly mounted. I could see content of "sdcard" folder in My Files file manager but other apps (including ES File Explorer with root permissions) saw "sdcard" folder empty. But when looking into the data/media folder, everything was there.
Moreover, when trying to uninstall Xposed Framework in order to get Private Mode activated, after restart I got stucked at Samsung logo, and had to power off the device, boot into TWRP recovery, and manually rename /system/bin/app_process.orig back to /system/bin/app_process (as I learned here http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/xposed-installer-versions-changelog-t2714053).
I guess these problems could be caused by not wiping Dalvik Cache and Cache partitions after restore. Otherwise, it would be unpleasant surprise that a system that worked fine prior to backup, would not work so flawlessly after restore. But since I was able to do what I needed, I consider it mainly as an interesting experience.
Once again, thank you very much for your help, expertise and interest to help my solve my problem. It really is a good feeling to see such willing spirit.

When reverting to kitkat from lollipop you need to wipe the data partition or it doesn't boot as the setup is different. Art vs dalvik etc.

This is where I am stuck at too. I have a sm-t700. I unintentionally let the auto update happened and it is now 5.02. I would like to go back to kitkat (4.42). I then flashed the T700XXU1ANL2 stock firmware via odin. After reboot, I am stuck at the samsung logo. My question is: how do I get to recovery? Only combination that works is home+power+vol dn to the download mode....

Power off then hold HOME + VOL UP + POWER in that order until recovery boots.

It's not power off its a hard reset and ALWAYS works no matter what state the tablet is in.
If it doesn't your tablet is dead.

[Q] Home process crash few time at each reboot

Hello,
So i have an Xperia Play running 2.3.4 official and recently, at each reboot, the home process service (Sony Ericsson Home) started crashing once and then twice at each reboot. I uninstalled all things i don't use but it still do and i have no idea what's causing it. I did reset user data for this process without change. Hope someone will be able to help me!
Thanks.
C'mon people.. Nobody ever got that here?

Since you've done everything, you could install the latest firmware without wiping user data, failing that you could wipe user data.
I've had this problem before but only when i messed around with the stock launchers settings, if you really don't wanna erase all your user data i could send you a stock home just tell what what version of android you're running
Also if you can get market running install gingerbread launcher, then a root explorer (file explorer) that will help when i send you a replacement home launcher
I thought it's not possible to restore the phone without erasing sd card data? I read that everywhere... I'll add a question there: How do you restore the phone if you can't start it? Just to know, in case...
I'm running 2.3.4, last update for this phone. You want to send me stock home, but do you use Xperia Play too? If not, it would be different, isn't it? About explorer: I have ES Explorer, not enough?

I meant reinstalling the stock rom, since your probably a newbie i'll tell you what to do
1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1313505
That's where you get the latest firmware
2. Then install flashtool http://androxyde.github.com/Flashtool/
3. Put the .ftf file in the firmware folder of the extracted flashtool program
4. Run the flashtool program select the .42 firmware from FLASH button, check wipe user data, Turn of the phone, hold back button, plug in usb to computer, wait till it goes green and run flashtool
5. Wait till it finishes, turn phone on, wait... wait... done!!
If you don't want to erase everything on your phone and want stock home launcher it's attached
Root your phone using the latest superoneclick or doomlords one click method found in the forums or google it
Go to market download gingerbread launcher and press home button when it's installed select it and then run ESFileExplorer, Download the Home.apk to sd card, navigate to it in ESFileExplorer, enable root permissions in the app and so the following
1. Backup original Home.apk from system/app/ folder to the SD Card
2. Copy Home.apk from sd card to system/ folder.
3. Set permissions as other system files have (rw-r--r--)
4. Move Home.apk from system/ folder to system/app/ folder replacing original one.
5. Reboot
And off course i have the same phone, why would i browse this phones section????
Thanks, actually i don't want to restore the phone now. I downloaded gingerbread an saved my home.apk file but how do i set root permission for ESExplorer? I've never set permission voluntary to any app, it just ask me when it needs it...
Anyway, i though this trouble might be cause i transfered some apps to the sd card, but still have to find which. And you didn't answer the question, how do i restore the stock firmware if my phone doesn't start anymore, isn't there an official recovery menu?

Use File Manager instead
https://market.android.com/details?...lt#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5yaG1zb2Z0LmZtIl0.
in the app press menu button go to more/settings and select root explorer and mount system folders
hold down on the home.apk when you've copied it into /system and select permissions and change the permissions to the ones i mentioned before
You can restore the firmware if anything goes wrong using either flashtool which i linked to the last post or Sony Ericsson Update Service which you can download from sony's website... if it gets to that point just ask
Also i dont think the moving apps to SD card has anything to do with your problems
Ok i'll try your home.apk soon and will report. Before making another topic and if you're using FPse, how do you get reed of the ****ed up sound? I have a PSP but it'd be more practical to do everything with the XPlay...
EDIT: Just tried your home and same thing happens... Again, two more thing: can i disable the sony ericsson video intro during boot and how to make an app start @boot?

If you want too keep your apps you can do 2 things
1. Re-install the 2.3.4 firmware using flashtool, that way you can keep all your apps even ones saved to sd card, in flashtool do not select erase user data
2. Install titanium back and backup all apps + data to sd card, that way you can uninstall everything and restore them later
Yes i was just thinking, but : If i save all apps with Titanium, can it also save my data and restore it? Cause if i just restore with flashtool (or the Sony app on computer, it works too right?) then i would have to reinstall and configure all apps manually, quite a pain. No idea for my other (not related to title) questions? I guess i should create other topics then. Thanks!
Titanium backup can backup and restore data as well as the app you don't have to configure anything except for titanium backup again. you can also use a program called mybackup by rerware to save messages and phone contacts but use titanium for apps and data it's easier to restore

I think CWM screwed me

I should be able to flash a backup I made with CWM recovery in CWM recovery, correct? Or would I have to adb push it?
I moved to 4.2.1 but not a fan of it at this point and want to go back using a backup (4.1.2) I made with CWM, but it won't flash. So at this point I'm trying to save my photos, notes, texts, and my titanium backup of apps and do a complete wipe using wugs (unroot/relock then reroot/unlock). Or should I be able to get away with just doing a format on my sdcard/system/cache/data and data/media (options in CWM)? Since going to 4.2.1 I have also lost a significant amount of free space.
BTW I have tried TWRP before and went back because I didn't like the layout but damn if your recovery can't even handle its own backups what the hell is it good for? TWRP here I come again.
you know it moves everything to a folder called 0 on the internal memory, right...?
A lot of the following is probably overkill but what I'd do is...
1. Backup everything I wanted to keep when in Android 4.2.1 onto my PC (Nandroid backups, photos, music, etc.)
2. Flash the factory 4.1.2 image
3. Boot up to make sure it's working
4. Restore nandroid in CWM
Chances are there are easier ways of doing this but I'd be happy knowing that is 100% right then have the potential for it going wrong

Bud I have tried to flash it out of every folder I have access to in CWM Recovery
The folder's I have tried, after choosing install zip from sdcard:
sdcard/0/clockworkmod/backup/ - 4 backups in here but wont flash any of them - says no files found when I try to flash one
sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/ - can actually see 2 backups in here (ones I don't want, just wanted to see where they were placed in 4.2)
sdcard/legacy/ - no files found
But stupid me did just realize the CWM backups I have been creating aren't zips? So I need to figure out how to get to sdcard/clockworkmod/backup and place my backup folders here. So I will be able to see them when I choose Backup and Restore - Restore
CWM can't see the backups in the '0' folder, it stores them on /data/media (or is it /media/data??) so unless you have a file manager with root access you won't get them back

My my my you are the man. It looks like it is data/media/clockworkmod/backups.
I am going to try to Restore my latest 4.1.2 nandroid tonight, after I had a chance to back every thing up, but I'm guessing it's going to keep the current file structure though.
The best way to upgrade to 4.2.1 from 4.1.2 is
1.Flash all factory images from fastboot apart from recovery,@ recovery step flash twrp 2.3.3.0 and you are all set to no '/0' bug,
2. Downgrade to 4.1.2 ? Flash factory images of 4.1.2 , just keep the recovery as twrp 2.3.3.0, at present it is the best possible recovery for maguro for handling the '/0' bug , it doesnot delete the layout file.
And restoring nandroids in between the versions can make every file very clumsy, take some time and flash stock images to get rid of that.

After downgrading you will still have the /0/ folder with all data. So many apps wont recognize that the backups are there available to be restored. You can just point to the "new" backup location that now exists in the /0/ directory.
Example: Titanium backup will tell you there is no restore data unless you go into preference and point it to the right folder in /0/.
Example 2: Nova launcher will not see the backups. Manually move them via Root explorer or similar from the /0/data/ to the /data/
..and so on.
I guess I will be flashing the factory image then.
1. Backup everything I need/want (photos, notes, sms, and grab latest copy of titanium backup folder)
2. Format system/cache/sdcard just because
3. fastboot - factory image (4.1.2)
4. Phone should still be unlocked/rooted (on current bootloader/radios correct?)
5. fastboot - twrp
5. Restore everything else
Or use Wugs to take back to stock, then fastboot unlock, root, add CWM recovery might be the easier way at this point. Restore nandroid and everything else. Then add TWRP and remove CWM.
Sorry trying to talk this out with you guys and wrap my head around what I am in for. I know it's not hard, just frustrating to think I could possibly lose some things.

Not to be bossy but the latest version of TWRP seems to do a better job handling user folder /0. Its also touchscreen and [email protected]$$ so there is really no comparison....:highfive:
Yea I tried it, thought I was more comfortable with CWM and this bit me in the ass, so TWRP it is when I get everything straightened out

[Q] Any file operation in TWRP fails

Hello,
for some reason in TWRP I can't fix permissions. When I have it create a backup it fails at the point where it tries to create a folder. In the file manager I can't even rename a folder.
I'm running a CyanogenMod monthly from about 3-4 months ago, and have the latest TWRP version.

I wonder if your /sdcard got write protection somehow...I thought I saw @osm0sis had a flashable zip for fixing that...apologies if I'm mistaken and sorry I'm not certain where to find this zip
Could be. But why would it only apply in TWRP? When the phone has booted everything works fine. Only in recovery do I run into problems (which makes me scared of flashing a newer ROM too...).
It should make a difference booted as well, so that's odd.
Easiest thing: Try my sdcard fix permissions zip. Might work anyway. http://v.ht/osm0
More annoying: adb pull everything (my adbsync sdcard Backup might make that easy for you), format data, push it all back then run my sdcard fix permissions zip.
do you use encryption?

wow. My phone is trying to screw me. Again and again and again. I've tried wiping the sdcard, didn't work. Had to factory reset it. Now that part was ok. Used TitaniumBackup to restore my phone. Reboot... and it was stuck at the boot screen.
Had to factory reset again, this time only let TitaniumBackup install my apps and their settings. Have to set up the system itself again.
Since I am using a VPN I need to lock the screen with a PIN (I hate that, but oh well... Android forces me). After I have set up the VPN, everything was working fine, at some point my phone crashed. And after it started again, I could not enter the PIN code anymore. I was locked out of my phone. The phone still displayed that I pressed a number, but no number did appear. Aaaand factory reset, AGAIN!
Really? What the hell is wrong? I'm worried it might be a hardware problem. The USB port is not working properly anymore, most of the time, and I'm afraid the built in memory is gone. Oh how I hate that. My HTC had the SD card die, but replacing it fixed it. I have a LG with fixed built in storage, where the memory died. Since I was overseas for a couple of months, and LG refuses to fix phones outside of the country it was bought, I had a brick for a few months. And now it seems to have hit my Galaxy Nexus. Yay. Who thought fixed built in storage was a good idea?

Flashed marshmallow V20A update, software version has not changed.

Hello,
I flashed the new Marshmallow rom from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/development/stock-h815-20a-stock-images-kdz-t3232282
It worked, but there are some details which do confuse me.
When I booted up, I still had all of my apps installed and configured (like nova launcher for example). I even got greeted by the knock code lockscreen, which I have been using before. But I was forced to change that in the end.
I wiped system, dalvik cache and cache. To start with a clean Marshmallow rom. But that did not happen.
Software version says "V10c-EUR-XX", but it should be "V20a-EUR-XX". Right?
Here is a screenshot by the User S3V3N: http://imgur.com/a/SjbAC
I expected it to be the same for me, but it is isn't. The software version differs: http://imgur.com/vNXInVK
At last I have Marshmallow and I have not encountered any problems in running so far. Even though my old rom was rooted. I have been using xposed, which is still installed with all modules, but not active.
I merely wanted to know what I made wrong and if I am missing anything by having an older software version.
Should I have wiped more than only system, dalvik cache and cache?
If you have read the thread you would knew, atm Flash Tool app can't recognize the 20A kdz, so you have to wait for the updates.
I think it's because system wasn't formatted.
If you use a root explorer, you'll probably find you have a 'cust' folder leftover from a previous rom.
Delete the files in it and the correct system version will be shown after reboot.

I have wiped system. According to the console log in twrp, system was formatted and therefore should have been empty. Where is the cust folder supposed to be located? On a quick search with the twrp file explorer, I was not able to find it. I had only system mounted for that.
But nevertheless I would prefer to have a fresh start with Marshmallow. There are some leftovers (like Xposed) which I do not want to have.. So how can I be sure to achieve that? Wiping does not seem to do what it is supposed to do. Should I have also wiped "internal storage", what is on there?
Thank you for your help.
And if u havent root ( flashed with ff ) how can i change version ?

Installed the Begonia Recovery Project and all files in my main storage have random letters

I was attempting to install the Begonia Recovery Project for Miui 12.5 (android 11) using the fastboot method. But when I reboot into this new recovery and look inisde the "install" tab, all my folders from my main storage are made up of random letters and numbers.
I assume that this means that my files are still encrypted but I am not sure how to decrypt them.
I am running MIUI 12.5.3 Global edition on android 11 and the Begonia Recovery Project version I downloaded and installed was from this website : https://www.pling.com/p/1556862/
Furthermore, I have a unlock pattern on my phone but when I boot into the custom recovery, it doesn't ask me for my unlock pattern. Could this be the reason all my files are named with random letters and numbers?
It won't let me boot back into my operating system and when I try, I get an warning saying "No OS Installed! Are you sure you wish to reboot?". Rebooting leads me right back into the custom recovery, with all files still named with random characters.
I would prefer to be able to boot back into my system without having to lose any of my personal files on my phone (if that is possible).
Any help is greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance

This is the reason why everyone recommends taking a backup of your files and resetting your device prior to such attempts. Unfortunately, most likely you will lose part, if not all of your files.
That No OS Installed error is normal since MIUI is a system on root OS and TWRP isn't able to detect them.
That random named folders is your internal storage but it's encrypted. You'll need to enter your passcode every time you boot to TWRP. If it doesn't ask you go to Mount and select Decrypt Data
To disable encryption you'll need to format data and install Disable ForceEncrypt. Doing this will erase EVERYTGHING. (except Find Device,IMEI's etc)
I would recommend you to install this TWRP to decrypt them.
If your device boots back to TWRP, it might be triggering Rescue Party. (click the 3rd button on the bottom of the screen to view the logs)

Thank you for the fast reply.
I installed the twrp that you recommended. TWRP still isn't asking for my passcode and I can't find a "Decrypt Data" option in the Mount section. The only checked options in Mount are "Data", "Cache", and "Micro SD Card".
Is Disable ForceEncrypt needed in order to be able to boot back into my operating system? Is there any way to boot back into my OS without this?
Thanks again for the fast reply!

That zip can only be used if your data is formatted. If you flash it without formatting data you'll be making the situation even worse because it won't allow you to decrypt anymore. (it makes the phone think data isnt encrypted tho it clearly is encrypted)
Also did you check the logs as i suggested to determine the reason why the phone is not booting?

Whoops, I used the twrp you recommended without formatting the data. Does this mean my data is forever undecryptable?
I checked the logs and indeed it is triggering the Android Rescue Party.
It suggests possible solutions that are
wipe caches, and/or
Format data, and/or
Clean-flash your ROM.
The reported problem is :
'--reason=enablefilecrypto_failed'

No i didnt meant that, i said the Disable ForceEncrypt zip needs data to be formatted.
The reported problem unfortunately means your phone cannot setup encryption. (thats why twrp won't decrypt it)
The only solution is to format data to make the phone usable again.
(you might as well flash the disable encryption zip after formatting the data since encryption on android is a pain in the ass and it makes the phone a bit faster)
By the way, do not wipe data, just click Format Data and format it since it doesn't get rid of the encryption properly.

Thank you so much for your informative responses.
Apologies, I thought you meant that flashing different twrp would lead to undecryptable files.
By formatting data do you mean the parition on my phone called "data"?. I forgot to add that files in my "data" folder have sensible names and don't look encrypted. Is it normal for it to just encrypt my internal storage?
By the sounds of it, I think I will proceed with your suggestion of formatting the data. Just to clarify, will this method also remove everything in my internal storage, eg pictures, music, videos?. Is there a way to continue with this method without having to lose those?
I appreciate your help greatly.

They actually encrypted the whole partition till Android 10. This required you to enter a password before the phone boots up but now they only encrypt the internal storage, apps and app data so you don't have to enter a password anymore before the phone boots-up.
Yes formatting the data will erase everything on your device including the internal storage.
Because they are encrypted just like the other part of data there's no way to save them.

I see. So could this have been avoided if I had flashed the twrp after disabling my password? Is it a smart practice to disable your password before doing stuff like flashing a custom recovery?
Obviously losing all my data and internal storage is definately a kick in the nuts. But it is also my fault for not backing up my data before experimenting like this.
Could you please send me an oultine of the steps I need to follow in order to proceed with your method of getting my phone working again. Frankly, I have little experience in this area and I'm afraid i'll make a mistake in the process. I also trust in your expertise and experience far greater than mine.
Thank you again!

Simple, enter TWRP, go to Wipe, click Format Data, type yes then hit enter. Your data will be wiped. reboot the phone in Recovery mode (not to the normal OS or else the phone will encrypt again) again so the internal storage gets created.
Plug your phone into a PC, download this:https://zackptg5.com/downloads/archive/Disable_Dm-Verity_ForceEncrypt_11.02.2020.zip
copy it to your phone and install it. If you want to use Magisk, install Magisk first then this zip file. The encryption will be completely disabled.
To answer your first question, It wasn't your fault because i have no idea why your storage got corrupted in the first place but you should definitely disable the password (or disable the encryption if you want to use a password) before doing anything.

Since I am reseting my phone to its factory settings, I researched into some ROMs that I may use instead of MIUI. I came across the Pixel Experience ROM and I'm considering installing it.
I read somewhere that flashing a ROM involves having to disable encryption every time you flash a new ROM or something along those lines. Will installing the Disable ForceEncrypt disable encryption permanently or will I have to considering installing it again if I want to flash the Pixel Experience ROM?

You will have to install it again if you install a new ROM or kernel since it modifies both of them (they both get wiped if you install or update the ROM.
I recommend you follow their install guide since a lot of people get confused when they see errors.
Flashing PE A12
1. Flash latest Firmware. 2. Flash latest Dynamic TWRP. 3. Reboot to Dynamic TWRP. 4. Flash latest PE rom zip and then format data. 5. Reboot and enjoy. Links Here: Dynamic TWRP: TWRP For A12 Note: If you see any red line errors on twrp just ignore them and continue flashing. Also before...

Thank you for all your help. It was probably simple and easy for you but for me, I had no idea what I was doing and would never have done the steps that you suggested so thank you. I really appreciate all the help you've given me.
I just have one last request that is : do you know any good backup services for android? I know about services like google photos for backing up photos and videos, but I was wondering if there were any that backed up the android as a whole, including app data/progress, photos, videos, notes etc.
Thank you again for all your support and making this process very simple and easy and wish you all the best.

Google One app can backup photos,SMS, phone call history and redownloads all of the apps (except apps that were installed from an apk file)
Pixel Experience actually bypasses the Google Photos storage limit so you can backup your entire gallery without problems.
For notes just use Google Keep, it syncs the notes to your Google account.
App data can be backed up by Titanium Backup or Migrate. (i suggest you test them before backing up your entire app data as suggested by Migrate developer)
I don't exactly recommend backing up Data as a whole since your only option is TWRP and TWRP loves to complain when it comes to backing up and restoring.
Thanks for the best wishes and i wish you all the best too. Have a good one.
