Wouldn't it be nice to be able to keep your screen to stay on, while reading for example, without changing your display settings? Or while showing someone else something on your phone without having to tap your screen every 15 to 30 second (depending on your settings) just to "keep it alive".
This thread is nothing more than a discussion of an idea of mine. Feel free to add your honest opinion and maybe even ideas of realization as I'm not well educated in the art of app development and maybe someone who likes this idea could put it into practise .
Let's begin:
The fingerprint reader is one of the most innovative features in the history of mobile devices. On most devices it work with nearly no delay and with Google's newest feature one can even swap down the notifications and the quick tiles.
How hard is it to implement the scanner into an app and assign different actions like "register as tap" or if it registers a double tap "switch to last app" ? (Not criticizing, it's really a question )
Those features would make my life much easier and would open up new possibilities.
I would like to see if it's possible to scroll pages with it too. I believe there is lots of room to grow with this.

Or be able to go mimic the back button by swiped left to right or right to left.
I always thought it would be nice if you could use the fingerprint reader to answer a incoming phone call. Hopefully with this new actions we have in reader some of these things will be possible.
I think it would be nice to be able to scroll through your notifications and to be able to open the app that you select with the sensor. The stay on feature would be amazing as well.
If I could pull out the edge tray hamburger from a side swipe I'd be happy.

Most of the features don't sound too hard to realize, some of them may even appear in some future devices by Samsung or Huawei, but if Google could add native Android support, even lower priced models could feature some of those.... Hopefully this thread will be seen
I was also thinking it would be cool to have those features. I find myself tapping the fingerprint reader when reading and the page starts to go dark. Of course it doesn't do anything but wish it did. Don't know how the scrolling would work but that would be awesome too.
I'm surprised you can't even take a selfie with it. I thought this was an accepted use of the reader.
I would like to see the fingerprint lock the screen as well.

I find it odd that although you can pull down the notification shade with the fingerprint scanner it will not brighten the screen like touching it will.
Give it a go, wait for the screen to dim just before it turns off and use the fingerprint reader to pull the shade down, it stays dim...

I believe Google will add more gestures along with many featurea in future updates. I bet they make them Pixel exclusive though. Since samsung is seriously considering Tizen as an Android replacement Google is also going to make features exclusive to their phones. No OEM has ever utilized all the built in features of Android so what's the point in writing features no OEM is going to use. I hope Google takes complete control of Android so people can see what Android was meant to be. Not just a base for OEM's to mess up and layer their own crappy alternative software over the top. Since samsung likes to replace everything with their bloat they would probably see performance increases going the same route and designing the hardware and software. Too bad Tizen is horrid looking though. I think the era of one version of Android fits all is coming to an end. The new Google formula will be what OEM's also adopt, or they will be forced to just become "for hire" manufacturers like HTC. Remember when foxconn made hardware before becoming an exclusive iPhone manufacturer. Googles vision was that every device ran the same version but no OEM wanted to cooperate with them. So they are taking control of Android. Because of this I think we will see much more features and development for Pixel phones. Resulting in a better Android experience for the Android user. Flame me if you want, but this change is inevitable. And I'm on board!
As probably many already saw:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-fingerprint-to-unlock-t3466549/page24
I hope this new app will allow all features I asked for and will make its way into stock Android!

I have recently switched from a P20 Pro to a Pixel 3XL. Have previously owned loads of Nexus' and missed the ease of rooting/flashing/unlocking, and there are some other really irritating things on the P20.
Generally I much prefer the Pixel, but there are a few features that I miss from the P20 (the camera is WAY better on the P20, but it has three of them so that's expected!):
- Network speed indicator - I know there's the Tulsadiver mods, but is there a better way of doing it? Also, does this break Google Pay/banking apps etc?
- Face unlock - I'm pretty sure I used to have this on really old tablets, surprised it's not a std feature. Is there a secure way of doing this?
- Lift to wake - I have enabled "Lift to check phone", but this doesn't seem to do anything?
Also, I remember from my old Nexus 6p there was an issue with charging cables. Is there anything to watch out for with Type c to type c, or will any std one do fast charging?

1. No, Tuldadiver mods or any other mods doesn't break Google Pay
2. You can use Face Unlock using Smart Lock feature under Security
3. Life to Wake brings ambient display on when you lift the phone.. if you already have Always on Display enabled, this doesn't do anything..

yes. works very well (as long as you install all 3 parts of sandboxed play services). I would maybe wait a few days before installing it on the Pixel 6. but using A12 on my 3xl and everything works, photos, gboard, official gcam (all running with network access disabled).
Also, GrapheneOS for Pixel 6 still says Experimental on their download page (it might just need to be updated). But if you're okay with maybe experiencing some bugs, it should work fine (but as stated above, most should wait a few days, they're very good on updating - especially the first few weeks after release)
Good to hear about... will be watching! cheers
I basically bought my P6P for this, so I'm extremely happy development is moving forward! Really hoping that, when a stable version is out, it will be possible to use the phone "normally" with it. Keep it up, Graphene team!
I'm with @Alex-Absolute I purchased my P6 just for GrapheneOS support, coming from a string of OnePlus devices. Though I am going to wait until it's listed as stable to switch, I'm excited they have a working build going!
I've got the release page in Windows' Aignes Website-Watcher, set to look for changes after "Pixel 6 Pro" and before "Version", so I should know when it changes to Stable.

I used GrapheneOS on my 4a during most of the Experimental days, and i did not experience 1 hicup. I would compare their Experimental Builds to Android 12 Beta. So it's nothing to be afraid of. It's definitely ready for daily use in my own opinion....
Are there any screenshots of this OS? I always like trying new things but I'm thinking there isn't much to look at that would be different from a standard Android OS

You're welcome, I'm using the free version - it's been around for a very long time on Windows, and I'm using the Android app which appears to more or less sync with the Windows version through Dropbox, if you have or create an account with Dropbox. It doesn't work perfectly for me, but I at least get notifications on my phone about the same changes in websites that the Windows program lets me know about - so I at least know that I should get on the computer and look to see what's new.
Sorry to anyone for the OT - I have lots of Android-related sites set to give me notifications of changes through this program.
The non-free version is a little pricey for my needs.

What I read about that is that its not experimental in the "unstable" sense, its that they haven't fully implemented the security enhancements.

Good question. Last time I looked into it, AA was a no-go. Guess there's only one way to find out. I'll report back later if it works or not
UPDATE: Still a no-go. I just receive an error that the AA protocol isn't supported. Guess I'll go back to compromising my privacy for the sake of convenience while driving.
Other than that+call screeening, this build is solid for an "experimental" build (Tbh they could have put the stable flag on this, but I assume they are waiting for bug reports before doing so). If anyone is looking for a good de-Googling solution, this is it.

Despite the hassle and increased expense, perhaps one of those Carplay AI boxes like Apple Pi might be the necessary workaround?
I'm very interested in this OS, but I too rely on carplay/auto as a general rule while driving. If I have to outsource my maps and music to an external box in order to have more comprehensive device security, that might just be the way it has to be.

Google reportedly working on tap-to-transfer feature for media in Android 13Android 12L hasn’t been officially released yet, but that isn’t stopping Google from working on the next major release, Android 13 (which is internally codenamed “Tiramisu”). We’ve already covered some of the features currently in the works for Android 13, but now details are public about another possible change — a “tap to transfer” feature for media playback.
Android Police has shared a supposed Google UI demo mockup for a new feature in Android 13, labelled as a “Media TTT” workflow — the “TTT” part is for “tap to transfer.” The screenshots show off a small message at the top of the display, which reads “Move closer to play on DEMO” in one image, and “Playing on DEMO” on the other. The latter popup also has an Undo button, presumably in case you accidentally walk close to a speaker and don’t want your music to start playing on it.
There aren’t any other details available besides what you see in the above screenshots. The functionality might work similarly to the ‘Hand off audio’ feature on Apple’s HomePod smart speakers, which allows you to hold an iPhone or iPod Touch close to a HomePod to set the speaker as the output. That feature uses a combination of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but it’s not clear what mechanism Google will use if this functionality actually makes it into Android 13. Google could add this to the Chromecast functionality in Android, or bring it to standard Bluetooth wireless audio, or both. It’s unclear what technology this feature will use to share files.
Assuming a similar schedule as previous years, Android 13 will likely start rolling out in the fall of this year, with developer previews and beta releases in the coming months. Android 12L is supposed to arrive sometime before the end of Q1 2022, which can be anytime from now until March 31. Android 12 is still slowly rolling out to phones and tablets — Sony just started updating its devices, for example.

The wording is awkward. Gives the impression of something similar to Bluetooth file transfer. I suppose it could be some kind of selective playback over Bluetooth (as opposed to routing *all* audio over Bluetooth), but since google is really into reinventing the wheel and making things only compatible with their own crap, its probably just (chrome)cast.

The radio issues are probably the responsibility of Samdung to deal with. I doubt that ANYONE at google is working on that at any depth greater than testing the updates received from samduck.
But even if google was doing actual work on the radio, do you really think that the same people have the knowledge and skills to work on radio firmware as those who work on UI or those who work on things like this feature? So you would do what? Lay off the UI and new features workers while waiting for the radio firmware people to fix their glitches?
Yup this is confusing because Google needs to fix stable 12 first but then they still developing 12L and now 13 lol I know they have different teams but I wonder if they will just merged 12L to 13 or just leave 12L for fold / flip devices.
Hi,
Google disabled the HDMI alt mode in the bootloader/kernel on the Google Pixel 6 Pro, which means that you cannot share your device screen by mirroring to an external screen using HDMI. You cannot either use the built in desktop mode in Android and use the Samsung DEX like desktop experience.
How can this be solved?
1) Is it possible to unlock the bootloader / root the phone, and change the kernel to allow desktop mode / HDMI out from the phone?
2) Is it possible to unlock HDMI out by flashing a custom ROM, such as Lineage OS?
3) Is it possible to force the Google Pixel to use the desktop mode even without HDMI, and use the desktop mode by sharing the screen to a Chromecast?
4) Is it possible to use a Displaylink external GPU to not only mirror, but also force the Pixel to start desktop mode and share this through Displaylink to an external display? (Displaylink disables Netflix etc)
5) I also tried Sentio Desktop / Taskbar, but it wouldn't allow me to open several windows in freeform mode. Only one at a time, and the application would never by default open in freeform mode by using the launcher, they had to be manually converted to freeform. Sentio Desktop could also not be open in the background while a freeform application was open in the foreground, which sorta makes it useless.
X) i tried this command through adb to force the phone into desktop mode, but it wouldn't work. Anyone tried it? adb shell am start -n “com.android.launcher3/com.android.launcher3.SecondaryDisplayLauncher”
I understand that we can share and mirror the screen to an external screen by using Chromecast, but this requires it to be setup to Wifi, and doesn't really work that good on a hotel. It is also possible to mirror the screen with a Displaylink adapter, but this disables any streaming services to the external tv, and does not allow desktop mode.
I would think that some of you awesome developers have looked into this either on the Google Pixel 6, or the 4 or the 5, which all have hardware support for HDMI out.
Thanks!
This video shows a Google Pixel 4 running a desktop mode Interface through a custom rom. Should be possible with the Google Pixel 6 right?

As far as I am aware, Android natively only does one device in clone at a max resolution of 1080p.
There's a presenter mode on some applications like PowerPoint to display something different without user interaction possible on that external display as there's no way with stock Android to handle mouse across displays or select which screen the app should be launched on.
We've done it to show it's possible, creating a specific ROM for that. The OS can be modified to do extended desktop with mouse support.
The Android device needs to support being a USB host (USB On The Go).
DisplayLink DL-1x5, DL-3000, DL-5000 and DL-6900 series all work.

There is also option
7) create a feedback form to Google / talk to a Google Rep, asking them if they are aware of this "issue" and ask them to fix it
It's a shame that Tensor lost a lot of basic abilities (just think about the people that have problems with DACs or hearing aid tools). Hopefully Google can bring these features back with future software updates, but of course they won't if people don't directly tell them "We want this, go fix it!".

Yeah, that's an option. I can definitely look into that. It's just that I sorta don't expect them to do anything about it. (Sadly)
Google have purposely disabled this feature, so they must have a reason for it. I'm hoping it's because they want the desktop mode to be perfect before it's released, so that noone can say that Samsung did it better. Some people believe it is because they want everyone to buy a Chromecast. (Already have 2 and it doesn't help me, so I'm hoping that's not it.)
I don't know, but when a company manually disables a feature which is by default enabled, then I believe hacking the **** out of the device, and enabling it yourself is the only option.

Pixels have never had support for HDMI out (not talking about modifications). They support DisplayLink using a $200 Dock (Google support documentation verifies this for previous pixels).
Sure make your voice heard. I'm all for that. But be realistic. 99% of the featureset is locked 18 months before release of the product. If they didn't have a huge stake in Chromecast, I think things might be different.

Well no, because display link uses non-public protocols and has no open source implementation, however, Linux supports GUD (generic USB display) for which you can use something like a $5 raspberry pi zero as the adapter. I doubt that GUD is compiled into the p6p's kernel, but it would be easy to add.

Hello,
Please support my request and maybe it will helps:
Pixel 6 screen expanding (not mirroring). HDMI Alt Mode - Google Pixel Community
HDMI Alt Mode is unlikely to happen as it's a very exotic (and not officially supported by the USB-C spec). DisplayPort Alt Mode (which is used by nearly ALL the USB-C to HDMI cables) on the other hand, should be possible as long as the USB-C controller can receive video signal from the SoC.
DisplayLink kinda goes around this, and although the available documentation is quite limited, my main guess would be that it employs something similar to the aforementioned GUD drivers, providing display out purely over USB protocol (instead of switching the USB-C port into alt modes).

Thanks for this response. I think this is how it works on all of the Samsung phones. When I still had my S21U, I just used a USB-C to HDMI adapter and could connect my phone to any display - it was great!
Now, of course, I understand the desire for Google to follow Apple's decisions and force their users to grab a Chromecast, however, the Chromecast just doesn't work as well for me when compared to wired connections. I'm hoping that they allow for this in the future as the current audio/video desync is pretty rough when I'm streaming content to my Chromecast =/.

That's the funny thing here - anyone can implement AirPlay, there's even software that allows using Chromecast devices as AirPlay targets! Apple is really cool about it, and I'm surprised no Android app implements it as of now.
Google is really stuck on their ChromeCast ecosystem, which, to be frank, works quite well for most purposes - the app deep linking it achieves with e.g. YouTube is pretty dope. But Google shouldn't be ignoring the other protocols that work better for certain scenarios. It's like Google actively wants to reduce the experience on Pixel devices.

No it doesn't. However, you may be able to unlock the bootloader depending on what model/variant you get. If you get a Verizon model/variant you will not be able to unlock your bootloader.
