Somehow my space on my phone is very low. I started getting the messages this morning. I wouldn't say that I have a load of applications. No more than I had on my HTC Magic...Is this too much for it to handle?

What are my options?
1. Clear cache;
2. Remove some apps;
3. Wait for root + custom ROMs with APPS2SD
I am now wondering ... What is this "cache" ?
Do we really need to clean it periodically?
It would be nice if there is a widget to clean this.
And honestly, I am not impressed with the storage ... 512 RAM seems a lot, but actually it is NOT
I have removed Google earth as it was taking up nearly 22MB which in the grand scheme of things seems to be load of space....
I never understand why they don't a minimum of 1gb internal storage on these devices for apps.

...or just allow for apps to be installed on a memory card from the first place
Seems like that they [Android OS] have realised that without doing so, they will not be able to have storage hungry things such as games to be installed.
36 as I counted, is normal IMO. But yeah, I really hope that you will be able to install applications on your SD card in the future. Not that I want more apps, but I want BETTER apps (which means they will be more MB's). I remember downloading games for the iPod touch that were over 100 MB. They were also off very high quality.
About not allowing installing apps to SD card: I think the reason why it is not allowed is the following.. if you can install something to your SD card, you can easily share it with other over the internet, right? That will mean people will start downloading apps the 'dirty' way! That's the only reason I see.
But Google is very smart and so far keeps giving everybody what they want. I am sure they will find a solution!

When you use apps, it stores some files in memory for quicker access later. Downside of it is that it takes-up space. Normally you would not want to clear cache that often, but if you're running out of space it helps.
Unfortunately you can only clear cache for each app one-by-one, but here's an app that might make the process easier http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.cerisierbleu.qac
You can not store any apps on your memory card!
I did not know this
I have low space as well!
I have a game which is 20MB, i do not want to delete it beacuse it is the best game I have.
Is there no way to put it on your memory card?

No, you can't put apps on memory card until we have root and get to use cool ROMs like CyanogenMod.
Or until Google adds official support for apps2sd, but I can bet you that root will come first.
the reason why google doesnt allow apps etc to be installed on SD cards is because of security of the system, meaning that through this it would be probably easier to root or hack the device and they re working on some kind of encryption for this, and it will be included in the future update,
someone from this forum posted it somewhere here in this section
I also got low memory on my G1 with Apps2sd. That's because every app stores stuff on the internal memory, the browser cache, google maps cache and so on. My experience showed me that these things are the real memory killer.

Google will encrypt that partition of the sdcard so it is secure. IIRC, support for something with the sd card was checked in recently, along with the support for the LED (for the nexus one). I imagine apps2sd is something all android devices will be seeing soon.
Personally, I would be screwed if I couldn't install apps to my sd card on my phone...as stated above, google earth takes up way too much space. Tack on a couple games and a dozen apps? Forget it.

right. does that mean we wont be able to replace the sd cards unless we 'install' some additional files onto it?
and I think if google wont do this pretty quickly, droid might loose a vast amount of clients, because this is one of the reasons why iphone is so popular.
My mate just told me today he's willing to buy a new phone soon, and when I asked him what phone, he obviously said an iphone why do people always follow the crowd and buy anything that's most advertised :|

I thought it was due to the fact that the paid apps wouldn't be secure on the sd card, opening the gate further for app piracy and thus they were working on a solution to allow copy protection on the sd card.
I think this issue just turned me off the Desire and now I'm leaning towards the Nexus 1. I like to install plenty of apps so this could be a real issue for me
All android phones are the same, its just a matter of time before its sorted you can still get plenty of apps on, personally i can't see how anyone would need more than 10.

not sure to be honest. I would assume that you will be able to mount your sd card and copy all of the contents off the secured/encrypted partition if your machine recognizes that partition type...then again, maybe you won't be able to.
If you upgrade sd cards, you may have to start all over with installing to the sd card. Good question.

the iphone is popular for lots of reasons; app support being at the top...but I would imagine the viral advertising and the "everyone has it" thing doesn't hurt.
Funnily enough, Android is almost on as many mobile devices as iphoneOS (according to an admob metric report). So the "everyone has it" argument is about to become a moot point.

more than 10 apps? Are you trolling?
Don't think i have even got 10 on mine atm and can't think i ever had more on any Android i had so far, hero/milestone.
I have been installing all my programs on my SD card yet I only have 50MB or built in space left (not RAM).
Any ideas on why so low and maybe what I can do to verify if some files ended up in the actual phone?
I have SPB Shell and phone suite btw.
Also, can you make this thing louder? I can barely hear people when I am driving... my LG VU was a lot louder.
I love this phone and that is the only thing I dont like so far.
Thanks

Well what ROM are you using? Some roms are heavy on internal storage energy/cell. However i dont think they would deplete memory to that extreme. can you list some of the apps your using? with some apps they store things on internal memory even when installed on sd.
To fix volume, programs like hd tweak will allow you exceed the 100db limit built in. and a few other volume tweaks.
If you list your 3rd party apps im sure someone can help out further
Start --> Settings --> Memory --> Click on the "Find" large files using storage memory. Or use Total Commander's find function (probably better). Probably have some default folders like My Docs or My Downloads pointing to your internal storage.
I use a program called where is my RAM to find out what folders/files are the largest. I know SPB Mobile shell takes up a HUGE portion of the available memory and that is most likely where all your memory went.

I have heard of alot of people having problems with using the volume enhancement settings on HDTweak, there is an audiopara file that you copy to /Windows floating around here that I believe will make your external speaker louder, so you could just put your phone on speaker when driving, which is probly better than holding it to your head anyways. Just use search function and search for "audiopara" and if you still cant find it, I have it on my comp, I can up it for you later. I would do it now, but I'm posting from my phone...
btw I had the VU too, what an improvement in ease of texting this phone is over that dinky little keypad huh? I did really like the photo editor on the VU though, thats the one thing I really miss from that phone
Thanks a lot guys I will check all that for sure.
I love how much better youtube and just normal videos look on this sharp screen over the VU for sure...plus I was just watching SouthPark (flash)...cant beat that!
I've noticed ROMs such as Uncommon Sense and SkyRaider include a modified media scanner that enables non-HTC apps to access the internal EMMC storage.
I'm currently running Virtuous 3.0.1; is there an apk or other file I can pull from either one of those ROMs to replace my current one, or would it involve a lot more than that?

It is possible to drag-n-drop a file to get your media scanner to read EMMC. HOWEVER, there are some sacrifices you will have to make for this ability. For one thing, you will bork your ability for the camera application to write to EMMC. The same thing goes for your voice recorder application. You can only write to the sd card directly from these applications. So its your call.
This is something I'd love to see also. While I'm currently on Virtuous, it would be nice for a universal .apk or something to apply in Rom Manager/CWM that works for any rom. I tend to try roms out here and there, so something universal would be very handy.
As for the "loss of functionality". What's the big deal with Pictures? You can save them to SD. I fact, I think mine have always saved to SD. What's the advantage of saving to EMMC > SD? And personally, I never have used Voice Recorder.....

IMHO the emmc isn't used by anything.g except HTC. Saving camera to emmc gives you that much more free space on your SD card

The reason I'm interested in it is that I only have the crappy 2gb SD card that came with the phone, so I store my 4 gigs of music on EMMC.
I use Launcher Pro and have been wanting a music widget that shows artwork. I've tried a couple out, but they either don't work on DInc (Pure) or I don't like their design (Mixzing).
I recently pulled the Music Mod app from Uncommon Sense for it's widget, which is exactly what I'm looking for. All I need now is for the app to be able to read EMMC and I'll have the widget I've been wanting for so long.

As for this, I am looking for an integrated solution that won't have these side effects. Again because I only have a 2gb SD card, which is mostly used up by 2 nandroid backups and titanium backup for all my apps/settings, leaving a tiny bit of room for me to download a ROM or two on there if need be.

There are two ways to do it. Use the media scanner code in cyanogenmod witch now scans the /mnt directory not just /mnt/sdcard. You can also make mount the emmc partition to /sdcard/emmc this works as well.

I have some coding experience, but unfortunately I'm not at all familiar with the internals of android. Any idea where can I locate the code for the media scanner from within cyanogenmod?

Unfortunately as I've said, I'm a noob with Android programming. At the risk of being a bit annoying, would anyone be so kind as to tell this beginner how I can compile/build this code into something I can slap on my device? I have Eclipse set up with the Android SDK and everything, I've just never done anything with it. I notice this code is part of a service rather than just a run of the mill apk, so I'm assuming I can't just pull a file and replace it on my end, but I don't know how something like that does work.
I'm still trying to figure out what good having 8gb of internal storage is when nothing seems to be able to make use of it.
Sure, I can copy files to it, MP3s, etc, but the music player doesn't seem to look there since I have an 8gb card installed as well.
(Yeah, I know I can use Astro or something to go play them -- but that's not really convenient...)

I somehow doubt this would work ... and if it did, not cause problems.
From the stand point of liunx, mounting emmc to a directory on the sim card is actually a very good method if your after simply playing music. If your after any of the other functionality the phone may use the internal storage for then your assed out, but to just access music. Good plan.
For me, I'd care less about saving pictures to SD versus EMMC. I'm more concerned about the 2-3 gigs of music being on EMMC than to be forced to save pictures to SD (which is what it's doing be default on every rom I've used anyways). As someone pointed out, what good is my 8 gigs of internal memory doing if I can't use it for music or videos. Yes, the problem is more so that apps like TuneWiki should add the function that the stock player has (don't tell me it can't be done, if there are apps already doing it). But if there's a work around that has what feels like a small sacrifice, I don't understand the big deal. I am not saying all roms should come with this as a stock setting, but if someone were to be able to whip up something that will work across roms, that would be nifty =]
Hi Everyone,
I'm a noob guys so please excuse me if I posted to wrong forum or if answer is availabe to my question here. I have looked and found few threads but some of the solutions mentioned did not work or involved rather cumbersome process of installs, tweaks or partitioning SD.
My issue is with VR Kingdom REVOlution B1.3 First of all I absolutely love this ROM so cudos to the developers as this is the best ROM I have tried. Seems very stable, all my apps work (at least the ones I have chosen, especially TelNav GPS for Sprint. Wireless is still on and off, at this point I think it's the hardware or my router. Beeing stricken with a slight case of OCD I have not yet found a way for my icons poiting to my apps moved to SD card via the phone's app manager or Superbox etc. to display their icon image. They are all fine in the main apps folder, I create shortcuts to them by holding them down when on desired screen, they appear fine with right icon. When I power on and off they stay okay, however, when I power off to change my battery or chosing the green restart button (close all apps and restart phone) after that reboot my SD card mount fairly fast, pictures, song etc. load fine but for some reason the shortcuts to my apps on various screens now have a generic Android icon. The apps launch fine, but the icons never regain their image unless I recreate the shortcut. That I won't do every time I need to reboot but will not sleep till I find a fix. I know it has to do with the SD mounting after my theme, wallpaper, skin etc. I had the same issue with the Ti-X_GBSenseOTA-V1.3 ROM (was no crazy about that ROM, left me with 7MB in system folder, fat and full of errors)
I also upgraded to a 16gb class 4 micro SD. Only thing I did was copy my 8gb SD cards files to it. Not sure if that was the correct way to do but apps, pics and mp3 etc. seem to work from the new SD fine.
Anyone have a solution or suggestion ? I can't flipping sleep like this..lol It would be very appreciated.
Please help
Thanks in advance,
Julian

I am assuming you have an EVO 4G? The best place to ask question is generally on the general section of your phone's forum or in this case the development thread of the ROM.

I am not sure of a permanent fix but if you change the scene (long press on an empty bit of a home screen) choose the scene menu and choose a new scene, Then just go back to your original scene. Quicker than recreating your icons...

At present with stock rom it says the I have a system rom size of 2.64GB (1.15GB free), and an internal media size of 10.6GB. Data taken from Titanium Backup
Is it possible to re size that system rom in order to free up more storage available to use or does Android use that available space for cache or something?

No flash will change the partition size. There are tools to do that, and expect the user to know what partition to resize, so difficulty if any is offset by user error.
There is scripts out to make SD as the system partition, but there are caveats to compatibility with apps and function. Though it may or may not work for you. I guess you can give it a go as it is free and can be removed if needed without need of re-flashing.
For me using the download to SD xposed app does a lot to point the system to SD, and keep personal files and media in on location. Though some apps need configuration to point to SD because the programmer didn't hook to system paths.
Move to SD works fairly well with most apps, just some games tend to loose the icon at times when clearing cache, thus moving back to system fixes the cache.
Just realised I can convert apps to system apps using Titanium backup. That should enable me to make use of the space in that "System ROM" partition correct?
I can't test it at the moment as I'm at work, can't get online and its saying its only available with the donated version (which I have paid for).
I figured I could make Facebook, Twitter, Antutu and other apps system apps to free up space on my "Internal+Media" Partition.
I also use folder mount to store large games on my external sd, I just figure if there is space available on the system partition I'd like to make use of it.

You can also backup the app, remove the app and reinstall it from play if available as a downloaded app, which may allow moving to SD within the system. Using Civato's rom, there should be less system apps than stock, but for the most part, I would remove apps that you can get from play and install them from play if needed.
Yes moving them into system using Ti backup pro would free up emulated SD storage, and SD card as well.
Though I have a number of apps that store 300mb+ of data, that I have no control over in storing. I have used a number of movers but none really work well. Maybe because of Samsung's implementation of storage, who knows.
I know you want to speed up your large drawings, but there is a limit to tablets made before 2014, I would expect waiting for 2015's latest tablets to upgrade. I am not too gung ho on 2014's tablets as of yet. Sure 2Ghz is faster and all, just would like to see faster throughput in the data channels and USB3 or Firewire2 capabilities. The only way to get something like that is through convertible notebooks.
tablets are still being made like phones... not much to be overwhelmed into being a work device, more like a gizmo if anything. I wish companies would stop playing around trying to make things look better, and start producing better internal design. I know android kills that process, but Ubuntu seems like the best alternative on tablets over android.

I'm not unhappy with the tablets performance when drawing as I just use it for rough sketching, I'm just trying to get it to perform to its maximum potential. I enjoy learning about whats going on under the hood and trying to improve apon each aspect.
I've had no issue moving the obb and data files to my external sd card using FolderMount. It means I have about 30GB of apps installed despite the 10GB app partition limit. I dont take the external SD card out though. Don't know how much of an issue it would be if you liked changing out your micro SD on the fly. I try and keep at least 15% of each partition empty
I should hopefully be coming into a little bit of money in a few months. Not a great deal, but enough to allow me to buy some new gadgets. High on my list is a windows tablet/laptop with a digitizer layer. May be one of the Samsung ATIV 700T series. They seem reasonably priced with an I5 processor and 4GB RAM. I'd preffer 8GB RAM but I cant find much for less than £1000
