Help returning my M8 to stock. - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Apologies if I'm posting in the wrong place or if this has already been answered. Google suggests this is a common theme, so I hope you'll bear with me, but... I'm a bit of a beginner when it comes to rooting, and it's been some time since I rooted my M8 and I've forgotten most of what I learned.
I'm looking to 'unroot' my M8 and restore it to factory settings, for two reasons. Firstly, because it will allow me to receive OTA updates which are currently not happily installing (I assume this is due to my having rooted the device). Secondly, I want to unroot because my bank (Barclays) offers a mobile banking app which doesn't work on rooted phones... Which is annoying to say the least, but unfortunately I've concluded that the the app will be more useful to me than having my phone rooted.
My phone is a Vodafone HTC One M8 (VODAP001), S-ON and has TWRP installed, which I did just now in my attempts to unroot.
Doing `fastboot getvar all` gives me this:
Code:
[email protected]~$ fastboot getvar all
(bootloader) version: 0.5
(bootloader) version-bootloader: 3.19.0.0000

(bootloader) boot-mode: FASTBOOT
(bootloader) commitno-bootloader: 3aa067db
(bootloader) hbootpreupdate: 11
(bootloader) gencheckpt: 0
all: Done!
I hope this is useful and I've provided enough information for someone more knowledgeable to be able to help... but if not let me know and I'll do my best to provide what else is needed!
I should add that I'm a Mac user and as such any solutions which require using Windows tools would be less than ideal. However, if it's absolutely necessary I do have access to a Windows 10 machine which I'm sure my dad would be happy for me to use!
Thanks

That wwe ruu is useless. He is s-on and needs a Vodaphone ruu at least ! Or a stock nandroid backup.
His best chance is going here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3086860
Look for a backup that has the same main version numbers as your output. Restore it and flash back the stock recovery. That's all there is needed. That way ota will install fine.
I'm not sure if there is a vodaphone ruu with that main version number available and even if you find one and it has a LOWER number it's useless as you can't downgrade via ruu due to being S-ON

yea I know that's why I say google it
Here's one

That one won't work, corrupted. See the size is small for a RUU and that already been discussed in other thread.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm still struggling to get my head around this, but I'm getting there!
So, am I right in thinking that all I need to proceed is a stock recovery img (which I have already) and a TWRP backup?

Yes .. you need restore non-rooted 4.19.161.2 backup and 4.19.161.2 stock recovery.img. Once done, proceed with OTA to the current latest 4.19.161.3

Thanks @ckpv5. I will have a go now and see where I get to. I have a copy of 4.19.161.2_ckpv5.zip as well as a 4.19.161.2 recovery so I think I should be all set.
Must say, I'm glad you replied to my thread as all my previous attempts had led me to your other posts/threads! But unfortunately lots of the files I was after had been taken down from mega/etc.
I'll post back with updates/questions when I've had another go

Success!
Thanks so much for your help everyone! I managed to get my phone unrooted and now the Barclays app and OTA updates are working as expected
I followed this process by @ckpv5, except I used adb to push the backup to my phone.

Great ... glad that we could help

Dear, sir/madam:
I would like to unroot my HTC One M8 (T-mobile) phone. I would like it back to its factory version without root.

Not easy to do thing without PC.
You have a T-Mobile device, you should be able to find a backup in T-Mobile section : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2714456
If you have PC, then you can RUU it - http://www.htc.com/us/support/rom-downloads.html
Download the latest RUU 4.20.531.5
That's all I can help as I'm not familiar with T-Mobile US device.

[Q] A few post debranding questions

Hi,
I've recently been exploring this forum and finally bit the bullet this evening and decided to try and de-brand my EE branded M8.
Steps I took were:
1) Used Sunshine to S-Off
2) Installed TWRP
3) Changed my SID from ORANG001 to HTC__001
3) Installed SuperUser
4) Downloaded the TWRP Nandroid for 1.54.401.5 - TWRP from http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2701376
5) Used TWRP to restore the Nandroid and confirmed the software version was now 1.54.401.5
I have a few questions:
A) After the install the apps I had installed (but not the EE bloatware) , my unlock pattern, contacts and wallpapers were all still visibile - is this normal? I had assumed the Nandroid backup would act like a factory reset.
B) Is it safe to perform a factory reset, or do I need to somehow install a new image for it to restore from? I mean going through Settings -> Backup and Restore rather than anything TWRP based. Ideally having downgranded the software I'd like a "clean slate" - but I'm worried it will try and install a newer version and fail
C) Is it safe to perform an OTA update (this was one of my reasons for debranding)? Anything else I need to do? (e.g. put stock recovery back on?)
D) Anything else I should be aware of? Any danger to leaving S-OFF and the bootloader unlocked? TWRP as the Recovery image?
Thanks
Hmm, even more strange, it seems my phone is confused about which software version is installed.
If I go to Settings -> Software Information -> Software Number = 1.54.401.5
But using fastboot to dump the variables I see:
(bootloader) version-bootloader: 3.16.0.0000
(bootloader) version-baseband: 1.17.2133156.UA20G
(bootloader) version-cpld: None

(bootloader) boot-mode: FASTBOOT
(bootloader) commitno-bootloader: 5933a7d6
(bootloader) hbootpreupdate: 11
(bootloader) gencheckpt: 0
How does the Main Version not match the version I see through settings?
Does this explain why I can't install the OTA update (trying to use OTA simply gets stuck on Checking for Update)
Any ideas?

From what u told me in PM ur missing your correct firmware version (thats why the verion-main is different to ur nand and yes thats why ur OTA is failing
Check ur PM mate i have included instructions that should sort things
There are risks associated with staying S-off and BL unlocked. Just as taking control of the administrator account of a computer involves added responsibility and risk, so too does S-off and running with an unlocked bootloader.
1) It might be possible for a malicious app to seriously screw with your phone. If Sunshine can temp-root, so can other apps. With S-off, there is no protection from such things. Just as S-off allows you to truly own your phone, a clever, malicious hacker can also pwn your phone. You have to be vigilant, only install apps you trust, and keep an eye on things.
2) If your phone is stolen, all of the protective mechanisms have been disabled. Unlocking the boot loader normally wipes the phone, so the next "owner" can't get your data by simply installing a new OS. With S-off, you can completely bypass that. I consider this fairly esoteric because most phone thieves just want to sell the phone to someone else before the EMEI gets reported stolen. If they are even halfway clever, they might try to factory wipe it, but I doubt most of them are even that bright.
However, on the flip side, you also have the ability to fix and change things completely. You are the system administrator, not your carrier.
Just an update to let you know I did flash the firmware as suggested in exocetdj's PM back to stock and have since had two OTA updates install successfully. Since restoring to stock recovery and then performing a factory reset (via the HTC method, I did this before seeing I could do it via TWRP) I've successfully OTA updated like this:
1.54.401.5 -> 1.54.401.10 -> 2.22.401.5
I've decided to remain bootloader unlocked and S-OFF for the time being, in case I decide to play about some more.
Thanks to everyone for their help - I'm very pleased with my debranded M8!

If the nandroid does not include the data partition (and the stock ones posted to the collection presumably do not), it won't overwrite that partition on restore.

All factory reset does is wipe the user data partition. Reset in itself does not affect the ROM in any way.
I want to debrand as well but am totally noob to all this. As a result of what you did, are you now rooted or unrooted?

I am unrooted but this is by choice. I'm still s-off though should I decide to root again in future! I was a total noob a week ago but reading lots of guides and asking my questions here I've learned a lot.
Good luck!

I would like to follow your sequence in post #1 but I'm assuming that were additional steps that you had to do that you got via PM to get it truly WWE. Can you summarise the steps I'll need to do to debrand my O2 M8? I'd want to stay unrooted as well.
Also, the link in step #4 doesn't work. How did you know which version of Nandroid you needed? Thanks so much in advance

That is the correct thread for the collection of stock backups by @Mr Hofs
If you want to go International then you need one of the International backups. WWE English is x.xx.401.x which is why he went with 1.54.401.5
My main experiences are in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/convert-t-mobile-to-htck18-t2885934
There's lots more detail in there including a link to a wondeful guide in a signature
As a starter for 10 - find your MID and CID values
Thanks for your help. I've taken the plunge and washed my phone of O2. Phew!
Just a comment, I think if you've installed SuperUser, it means you're rooted? I avoided that route...
I was but I've since removed it. Congratulations on you're debranding!

[Q] Factory Unlock HTC One M8 Softbrick HELP!

HI,
I just bought an unlock htc m8 no branding any where. I unlocked the bootloader and flash a custom recovery but when I tried to root the phone something went wrong because I'm stuck on the boot screen and it would not go past it. I have been looking every where how to fix it, I don't have a nandroid back up and don't know which one to look for. Is there a way to restore it back to normal? I also tried flashing a custom rom but it gets stuck in the same place.
please help.

Have you flashed a custom recovery on the device? If yes, just try to restore a nandroid back from @Mr Hofs thread and your phone will be fine
Problem is, I don't think there is any nandroid backups available for his device LRA__001. First time I've seen that CID mentioned. Going by MID doesn't help much either, I think the Verizon has the same MID. Going by the "product: m8_wlv" it also indicates Verizon. I do see that he's on AT&T on his profile though but...
Being stuck on bootloader screen for 10minutes or more won't be surprising at all if he flashed a 2.xx.xxx.x firmware based custom ROM instead of a 1.xx.xxx.x version. Need to upgrade firmware in order to do that.
You don't happen to recall what version software your device ran?
Hi, I had the 2.7 TWRP recovery but found the 2.8.0.6 works better. I was able to flash PA ROM and it is working now. Plus now is rooted and S-off and super CID.
The phone has no branding and bought from amazon as unlock from factory. But is funny you mention Verizon has similar IDs because when I plug the phone to HTC sync the first splash screen shows Verizon wireless assistant and then go to the normal HTC one.
I tried the latest HD ROM and it was force closing a lot so I think the firmware is 1.... Something. I want to upgrade but don't know which one to get. Maybe I should look on the Verizon forum, thanks for letting me know that.
I spoke with developer support at HTC and they told me they will help restore to stock and escalated the call. I will let you know if they do help.
Thanks for the replies.

Honestly if its that much of a hassle, you should stick with something safe, Change the MID and CID to a Dev Edition/Europe, to do a full convert and you wont have to worry about the LRA_001. If you do those 2 steps the the OTA will be automatic as follows.
Else just flash a custom recovery, wipe data/cache and so and restore with one of the TWRP backups posted around here and you'll be good to go :good:
Cool I will try that. I did not know that.

Don't forget though, best steps as follow, change MID, CID, restore via TWRP backup. If youre in Europe then change the MID to EUR, but the CID change it to super CID. Youve gotten past the hardest part which is the SOFF so everything is a breeze from there on out.
You won't lose your internal data if you do any of the following steps but dumping them on your SD card would be safe too.
I had an SG manufactured one, and the OTA came out pretty weird, was an unbranded one too. changed it to Dev/Unlocked MID and the super CID, downloaded the B_US002 TWRP dump thats posted here and restored that. Might want to download the OTA too aswell would save massive time after the first 159MB ota.
Awesome. Thanks!
was any one here ever able to get things working?
i am on LRA__001 and got my radio to stop working, no phone signals
contacted HTC dev and they provided me a zip, flashing that didn't help much, still no signals and can't boot into stock recovery.
seems like i've flashed the wrong hboot or something that's causing everything to be flashed on wrong partition addresses.
any help ?

This isn't the same issue as the OP. You flashed the wrong firmware which is much more serious. This thread isn't relevant to your issue, in addition to being over a year old (which also most likely won't help your issue).

The LRA version is the LRA version. there's no question there. Its based on Verizon, but its not Verizon.
Sounds like you are trying to make up solutions. What you need is LRA firmware or RUU (RUU may not exist).

i've got complete RUU from HTCDev to flash via hboot, did flash that but lost the IMEI and baseband version under settings > about, however the getvar all is still showing that information. so just trying to figure out what went wrong. either something is missing in what they have provided. or the hboot version is mismatching.
read bout the boot process and got to know that hboot reads IMEI and baseband while booting up and holds into some shared memory variables which later read by kernel.
just trying to figure out things and also looking for somebody who can provide dumps so i can try flashing them.

You flashed a hacked Verizon RUU. Its not the LRA RUU, and its also not an official RUU.

No I explained them my case and they asked to couple of days time and then they provided a zip file to flash via hboot. They claimed that they have prepared this file especially for me. I flashed that file. It was 5.0.1 with almost all the images.
One thing that I doubt is that the hboot is not updated since the android-info.txt says hbootpreupdate=12 and my getvar says 11 so just wondering whether it was updated or not.
Also I dumped mmcblk0p3 (board-info) and I can see my IMEI there too.
Just don't know where to nock my head

they send me the wrong files a couple of times. But they did get me the right one at the end. it seems you have the same problem I did. I still the hboot file and the system image. The hboot zip should be installed on download mode and the system image should be rename to OP6BIMG.zip and put in the sd card and re-start the phone in bootloader and let the zip install itself. It takes a long time but it worked. I have the files in my google drive I don't mind sharing it.

Would you be able to share the stuff that worked for you ?

wi-fi not working on M8

Hello,
I want to buy a second hand HTC M8 and it has a issue with wi-fi.. it won't turn on or connect to wi-fi. from the screen shots i see that it has network (3g network). the guy selling the m8 says that a friend of his tried to put a custom rom on the phone and after that the wifi stopped working. here are the printscreens send by him. could you tell me if i can repair it myself or it is the wi-fi chip damaged.
Wifi doesn't work because the ROM is 4.4.4 but device is still 4.4.2
(can see this from the baseband version)
You can easily fix this by put in correct ROM version
can it be done without s-off? with a ruu.exe?
This s the bootloader

You better remove the 3rd pic where it shows the IMEI no. & Serial No. Those are sensitive data.
Anyway ... checked your IMEI, it is a EU version, so there is a RUU available which you can directly update it to the latest Lollipop version 4.16.401.10
thanks. will remove those pictures. i will but it tonight.
Is it for a good price due to WiFi not working? If so, the devil on my right shoulder says it serves them right for modding the phone without doing the proper research! Or researching properly to (easily) fix the problem, for that matter.
the price is ok. my old htc m7 + 100 euro

Help me to get it stock please !!
Remove serial no. in your post
I'll write simple guide on how to get back on stock and update to the latest lollipop when I'm home in next 3 - 4 hrs (if no one attend to this yet)
i see that the phone has Vodap001 CID but the soft on it (rooted one) is for the HTC_00x CID.. problem? i have got a stock backup, unzipped it, putted in TWRP backup folder, now i restore it and after that flash the stock recovery?? is that all?
It's a Vodafone UK M8, but still easy restored to stock
To be honest, I'd get it back to 1.54.161.x using the backups @ckpv5 will post, S-OFF with Sunshine and then convert it to the unbranded handset using the 4.16.401.10 RUU (using the guide in my signature)
skirmish please .. one m7 i could do it with no problem but this guy kills me
Can't write proper guide as I'm driving....
Follow this guide : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=59034701&postcount=4
But don't use that 3.29.161.9, you need to restore 1.54.161.10 and its recovery then proceed multiple OTA up to lollipop 4.19.161.2
You can get the needed files here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=58606328&postcount=4278
Note : if you have plan to S-Off your device, do it after restore 1.54.161.10
if you want to keep it S-On, just proceed OTA. Later you can install any custom lollipop ROM if you want to

you could follow my guide on the viperone thread , steps 1 to 6 would get you onto stock android lollipop with a stock recovery , just do a full setup at step 6 , my guide proceeds past this point to then install a custom recovery and a custom rom but if you stop at step 6 after setting up the phone you will be unbranded stock
hope this helps

Htc M8, confused, want to update to marshamallow

Hello I bought M8 from somebody, it is unbranded European model i think, phone is rooted and carrier unlocked as im using it in asia. it comes with android 5.0.1, I want to update to stock marshmallow for this variant. I have been trying to do on my own but it only confused me more. Im not sure if i have custom rom or if because im rooted, because At the time moment it doesnt offer any software updates from the main menu.
Some info abt phone.
Its model id at back is Op6B100,
Android version 5.0.1
Software number 4.18.708.12
Build number 4.18.708.12
In the bootloader menu I have
Software status: Official
Locked ( i think it means bootloader)
M8_UL PVt SHIp s-off
Cid-11111111 (but if I check with cidgetter it says t-mob010). So it confused me because according to its model its supposed to be european model but in fastboot it says 11111111.
HBoot 3.19.0.0000
I dont have twrp installed.
So please tell me where to go from here. I want to either from here go direct to stock android 6 for this M8 variant or go back to stock condition and get ota update. I prefer to lose the root. So please tell me which stock firmware I need, and do I need to change cid, remove root, before that? Also i would like not to brick my device in process.. Thanks.
Also my device is carrier unlocked at the moment so Im hoping this shouldn't affect that. Thanks
.??
Post fastboot getvar all result (delete serial & imei no. before posting) then someone will be able to help.

First you need to change MID to EU
Then install EU marshmallow RUU
Follow this guide - https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70575580&postcount=12
Do i need twrp to change MId? And do I need to unlock bootloader before flashing RUU.

ok thanks , I keep getting this error in the adb fastboot when flashing ruu zip . target reported max download size ( shows some big number bytes) .
Read the guide again .. you need htc_fastboot not normal fastboot.
At the end of the guide it shows 2 other methods on how to install RUU zip. Pick one thar you think it is easier for you.

Htc m8s android upgrade

Hi, I just bought a used HTC M8s and I am trying to update the Android version + Sense!
Which is the best version to flash, plus I want it to be as stock as possible!
Thanks!
UPDATE ! ! ! !
1. I tried updating over the air, but after the download completed an error appeared that said I can't update because there is some software modification...
2. Tried downloading a stock RUU from this site HERE
After running the exe RUU it gives me a Customer Id error 131 or something and exits immediately.
So I am stuck with Android 5 for now can't get any updates. Hoping get it fixed soon! :/
What is your getvar all say? What version of Android are you currently running? Does it not update over the air? Did you check for any available update in software in settings?

oh. I don't understand your problem. I have the same model except mine is
baseband: [email protected]
and I have a version main 2.20.401.1
I just made a successful nandroid earlier this week... which I can use to restore my current setup if I factory reset.
I might be able to make a system only nandroid. but it would still be really large and need to be uploaded. Do you have the twrp working?
better yet there may already be some stock 6.01 nandroid up here someplace. Did you try searching for one?

The nandroid probably wont work. There are like 40 partitions on the phones. Dont kno what you can do.

A nandroid backup is a great thing. Restore a phone to a exact state. Are you using the 3.0.3 TWRP found in the next thread over in our phone's forum? (m8s)
download the 3.0.3 and see if it can work by booting into it (dont flash it first see if it works using the 'fastboot boot ('3.0.3TWRP')' command. Using an SD Card create a backup (nandroid) of your 5.0 phone's boot, system, data and recovery.
then you are ready to restore other nandroid backups you find around.
Worth noting there is a lollipop twrp on that thread too. But U dont think you can only use that but you can try downloading it to your phone via that fastboot boot method I mentioned before over the usb cable.
