Hi guys,
I'm not sure if this was there before, but today I updated google maps and figured out, that the map is now rotating if I move the watch, almost like it's using a compass. As far as I'm informed the watch does not have a compass sensor.
I think that is really some nice addition though I have to see how this works when I use it during navigation.
Cool. can you link photos or even a vid of this working please?
Just wondering, don't you have this feature available at your watch? The Google maps update from December, 4th (9.18.1) has to be installed on your phone. You can toggle the compass mode by clicking on the small compass symbol which will change from northbound to rotating or vice versa.
The compass symbol is only there if you pressed the "locate me" button before, so your location is highlighted by a blue dot in the center of the map. If you start to scroll the map, the compass symbol changes to the "locate me" symbol and the orientation of the map freezes.
That's also the reason why I have some concerns about screenshots as I do not want to post my location by screenshots in forums.

No it does not point to the geographic north, your observation is correct, it's not a real compass.
I believe, google maps changes by accelerometer, and position of when the map was drawn.
Huawei watch with it's 6 axis accelerometer can work as a compass, and there are already apps to use it as such.

On the ones I got working you need to hold your arm out to your side and do a wide figure eight a few times to get it to calibrate.

Just looking at HW with rotating Google Map...
Strange thing is that while turning the watch the map rotates in the same direction as watch but faster. This is wrong imo. It should move in the counter-direction, basically keeping map locked to earth. I see no use for the rotating map as it is working now...
Any other ideas about this?

Hello guy`s i was searching in internet for such a application like this but i don`t find anything cool also i think that everyone need to have COMPASS in the device and will be usefull.
So if anybody have idea or someone from the dev.. can make COMPASS to run in full screen on our Blackstones its posible to use GPS data or to use the G-senzor will be AWSOME!
Thanks in advance
I was looking for an app like this as well recently but came up with nothing. I've seen the one for the iphone, it's pretty nice and simple.
I would be very interested in having something like this on my HD.
I don't understand how you could really put a compass in without the device actually containing a compass? I suppose using GPS it would be possible, but you'd have to physically move a few metres in a particular direction for it to know which way you're facing in order to tell you where north is in relation to yourself.

I know very little about the iPhone, but I do know the G1 has a built in compass and has various compass related applications which use it.
you can have a compass, i think, in NoniGPSPlot in the window "satellite"
Have a look at RichesseGPS.
Its free and does the job well using GPS to triangulate your position and bearing.
One must have a compass in the device to have it in the software. All Windows Mobile 7 phones will have compasses in them... current WM phones do not...
Google G1 has one
The iPhone has no built in compass sensor as far as I know and I am still at a loss of how exactly this compass app actually works.
As far as I know, GPS programs generate your bearing (direction) based on your previous location compared to your current location. That is all fine and dandy provided I continue in that same direction. However, if I were to rotate my body (and the phone) 90 degrees to the left or right, my bearing wouldn't change until I began to walk in either direction.
What I am saying is, GPS based compasses would work and do work in navigation applications such as Tom Tom or Garmin... however for something like a hand held compass it would simply not work very well as an actual compass.
Did a bit of research on Compass Go - the iPhone compass application seen in the "Itchy" Commercial
Apptism -Compass Go Application said:
Find your way back in the easiest way!
Use Compass Go whenever you find it easier to follow an arrow than to read a map.
1. Tap 'Set Target', 'Use current location' and you are done!
2. To find your way back, watch the target arrow and distance change.
3. As you get closer, the background changes from blue to orange to green.
Perfect for finding your parked car, a place on a beach, a place in the forest or any situation where a map doesn't work well.
Application features:
* Simple GPS compass
* Accurate sun compass
* Target finding device
* Geocache search tool (set your target coordinates manually)
* Multi purpose navigation helper utility
* Magnetic declination indicator
* View positions in the map application with driving directions.
When using the live compass, make sure you walk in a straight line to get as accurate compass readings as possible.
You may also use this application together with an ordinary compass to achieve a very exact target finding device. Most useful in forests and other situations where the map doesn't work well. The application also has a built in magnetic declination indicator (red/white arrow) which compensates for the local declination.
If you don't have a GPS iPhone, your direction may be very wrong at times. Use the sun compass to confirm your direction. Generally it works quite well when there is good cell-phone coverage. You have to move more than the (±) accuracy limit to get a new reading.

So from what I understand this application works on GPS bearing... along with a few other features. However, just like the application listed below, in low signal areas it recommends you use the sun compass.
An application that just utilizes the sun and current time in order to create a compass heading is shown below.
Something like this could be easily made for the HD.

There should be a way to use GPS to determine direction. I think that's how the compass in tomtom works.

this is quite true..but what if you combine data from the G-Sensor?
i.e you would have to move a short distance to obtain a GPS bearing hence initialise the compass then (assuming the HD was facing forwards at the time) use rotational data from the G-Sensor to maintain the compass until the next GPS update. Of course this would still only work if the HD was always held by the user in the same orientation????
i am not sure how accurate the G-sensor is or what sort of data it returns?
but the combination of the to could theoretically produce a pseudo-compass
if i get time i may have a play with this theory..i am sure somewhere i have a G-sensor SDK...just need to figure out how to access the GPS,
Can anyone confirm whether the g sensor supports rotational data i.e. when held flat and you turn around?
struggling to find spec on the sensor (only done a quick search)

Yes, this has been spoken of in nearly all of the previous posts. Your current GPS location is compared to your previous GPS location, a line is drawn between the two and that is your bearing. (direction)

The G-Sensor is just that, it senses the force of gravity or acceleration in 2 directions, an accelerometer. (AFAIK it is only a 2 axis unit, although it could be a 3 axis but that would seem unneeded) When the phone is laid flat, this is seen as tilt both forward and back along with side to side. When the phone is held upright one directional is maxed out where the other will detect tilt rotation of the phone left and right. (Or swinging of the phone left and right, this part is key to perhaps getting this to work)
The most predominate force, gravity is always down and because of this it is what one would usually use for screen rotation and games.
What you are thinking of is a gyroscopic sensor, a sensor capable of reporting rotational information, which would be very nice however is not included on our device.
However all hope is not lost, our sensor is capable of telling us acceleration in the left or right direction. So if you are holding the phone upright and rotate your body left and right, the acceleration would be recorded by the sensor. One thing you can try, is based on the acceleration and time (start and stop time of the acceleration) use this to try interpret how far the user has rotated themselves. Through some basic physics equations one could ROUGHLY give an idea of how far one has rotated from the predetermined north direction.
Several problems persist through this method, as simply how far the phone is held out from your body can greatly effect the arc length of the rotation resulting in an over / under estimation of the movement based on the acceleration data captured by the G-Sensor.

thanks for confirming my suspicions, after playing a little with the G-sens SDK i realised this.
dam, if only it was gyroscopic!....
but then i suppose i could say dam if only it had a compass!! lol

yes go to http://google.com/gmm and dl the latest ver it has street view.
I just downloaded and installed the latest version from that URL and it doesn't have streetview. Is the UK version different??
Dont know if its any different, but it shouldnt matter. All of the touch pros out there right now are primarily just an unlocked version of the same device. And google maps gets its info from the same place no matter where you are located. Some areas dont have street view available yet, some never will, depending on the area and population I think try to go to a heavily populated area hold you stylus against the screen till a full rotation occurs(make sure its a street a car can go down, the street view cameras are located on top of a moving vehicle) then street veiw should be an option. good luck, street view rocks. its a little creepy but its cool.
I was trying an area which definitely IS within the StreetView coverage (i.e. I get it on a normal browser), but the latest Google Maps Mobile that I downloaded doesn't have a StreetView option.

Same here. No street view. Just downloaded. I notices that it wasn't an upgrade. Usually your phone displays the message if you want to overwrite the old version but this time nothing happened. It just installed it.
I have version 3.0.1.6
that's funny works fine in my google maps that came with the phone. Eg search for paddington station then choose street view from list of options.
Street view ISNT available using the main menu (like in HTC Dream, for example)but clicking on a street (where street view is avialable) and then wait for popup menu and then select Stree view
I am using 3.0.1.6 downloaded today...

Works for me now . Funny thing is that I first had to choose for satellite view then I had the option for street view.
Works fine for me with the default TP2 (I never updated Google Maps or anything).
Street View appears in the contextual menu in Paris for example.
doubt that will work Helikaon. I could be wrong but I assume a digital compass is digital because it doesn't have a floating/balanced needle which requires visual feedback to knnow which way is North. It seems to require specific hardware and it is digital due to its interoperability with things like computers. This would make things like augmented reality more difficult to implement on the TP2

"Digital compass" doesn't mean that it would work on every device. It's 'digital' because you don't have an actual (ie. analog) compass with it's needle. What you do need in those devices with digital compasses, is something or the other that works with magnetism, built in. Wikipedia will tell you more, if intersted
So no digital compass for Touch Pro2.
Street View even works on my Mogul

Tell me about it. It was one of the very first things that shocked the gizzard out of me when I saw it missing. I originally thought I was just overlooking it or not looking in the right place because I knew it had to be there...being that the HD2 with the previous Microsoft mobile OS had it, and that nearly every other smartphone in the world has free voice-nav of some sort. Have you asked google that? I doubt microsoft is going to make a google maps app, google would probably sue them...
I'm still shocked that it's not included. When they updated the Bing app for WM6 it seemed like a lot of the features (including Voice Nav) had been back-ported from WP7. Apparently that wasn't the case. It amazes me that the old Bing app has more features than WP7 does. FWIW, the old app screws up a lot and would get confused. Maybe they were planning on including it but couldn't get those kinks worked out in time for launch and didn't want to release something half-assed? A definite posibility imo.
I tried Bing Maps on my LG.
In Germany the maps are not half as good as the google maps are.
Many of the small streets are either not named or not on the map at all.
I hope there will be a cool offline navi available soon.

If you are expecting voice-guided directions, that won't happen. WP7 doesn't currently do voice-guided nav. But Bing maps will show you your current location and update it as you travel along. You just have to keep an eye on the screen to see where you are. If you have a passenger, let them watch the screen and be your voice-guided nav.

There's no doubt WP7 will eventually have Bing TbT voice nav like WinMo had. But not till around the end of the year at the soonest and likely not even then. And it may not be free, but who knows.
I prefer the Bing TbT voice nav to the Google version. It seems to work better,,,at least it did on my HD2 when it had a WinMo OS on it.
Just found this on the marketplace and I have to say... pretty awesome. This is what WP7 was missing. Although its clearly in the beta stage it is pretty good for a V 1.0.
A-to-B is a Turn-by-Turn application built to demonstrate some of the capabilities of the ArcGIS API for Windows Phone. Warning: The application is meant for demonstration purposes only! Do not rely solely on the suggested routes or instructions given by this application. Features: - Turn-by-turn routing. Sound notification when a turn is coming up. - Add often used destinations as favorites. - List of recent destinations. - "3D view" when in navigation mode with easy accessible "zoom in/out" buttons. - 2D Map for browsing the map supporting pinching, panning etc, and pick new destination by touch'n'hold on the map. - Easy accessible "Recalculate" button if you go off the route and need a new route from your current location (because of service restrictions, the app is not allowed to do this automatically). - Routes all over US (support for Europe coming in a future version). - Worldwide map (detail may vary).
You can read more about and get the marketplace download link here
Nice find I'll have to check it out.
And so I just did. I've been playing with this for an hour not bad, not bad at all I'm going to have it set up in the car on the way into work. I'll post how it does on the highway. But it gave the correct route that I take. But I want to see how it does when I'm actually driving.

This indeed looks fantastic. One question though:
Which map is it actually using? This one has the outlines of every single house or building in my neighborhood and it is VERY accurate. I really like it.
Will it support pinch to zoom?
Partial support in the UK
Hi all
I have installed this on my phone in the UK as a trial. It works and in map mode I reasonable moving 3D map like any normal Sat-Nav. There is no car/arrow on the road to indicate precisely where I am, but the basic mechanics. It can't find any addresses in the UK so I guess that's not yet supported on the server side, but this application clearly has huge potential.
I think whoever gets there first with a fully functioning turn-by-turn sat nav in the marketplace is clearly on to a massive winner.
Cheers

On US 95 in MA I, had an arrow up showing my car. it had all the off ramps and had my destination pegged down perfect. Also there is a speed indicator I was doing 70 mph, it had me doing 71 I can handle that. Like said before, it could use a few tweaks here and there. But overall this Nav app is darn good.
It was pretty nice and accurate getting me to work this morning, but it couldn't figure out my home address. Kept on sending me to weird parts of town.

Maybe this sounds stupid, but how do you know you were doing 70mph? Using your car's speedometer? In which case, have you had it manually recalibrated? Usually a car's speedometer is not accurate (though it normally shows that you're going faster than you actually are).
I'm going to download this now, though I'd be interested in maps of UK and Australia, so I'm not sure how useful it will be to me yet.

Hi all, it really looks amazing.. Is there any way I can see how it works when i am in Europe? I just want to see something like preview - e. g. select two destinations in USA and than see how it goes. Thanks
Fact of the day! - Generally, Sat-Nav's register a more accurate Speed than the average Car's Speedometer. Speedometer's are configured at manufacturing to register a faster speed than what the car is actually going, this is to compensate for Tyre wear and other wear-and-tear happenings that all cars suffer from over time.
What I have noticed about this so far as that if I'm zoomed in relatively close.. not SUPER close mind you, but maybe 2 or 3 zoom levels back from the closest zoom, that it doesnt actually register the map, says map data not yet available... shows the route the of the road... the path but not the surround streets, weird. This only happens in certain area's of the city I live in too, not all over. Its like the map data just isnt there which I find odd. Its not like its loading a satelite photo so I dont know why it would do this. I tried xmaps from the marketplace the other day and it didnt have this problem. Id understand if it was a satelite image as you cant zoom in close to those sometimes, I used to have that issue in google maps where you would zoom in and it would just say you were too close.
Otherwise I LOVE this thing and am so happy I found it in the market the other day. Just an awesome APP

I noticed the Arrow is there, but hidden by the info at the bottom of the screen. Hopefully, an adjustment will fix that.
Also, Morten Nielsen's other App 'GuidePost' is pretty cool too!
Finally! Free TbT voice nav on WP7!
Guys, WP7 looks to become the leader of smartphones. The system is the best there is and now the features are appearing...albeit slowly.
Hello...what I am looking for is a navigation app that will allow me to use 100% customized routes. Allow me to explain: I am a motorcycle rider & I like to take long motorcycle trips (500 miles a day sometimes) OFF the beaten path. I don't want to ride main streets & major highways. Those are boring! I want to be able to customize a route 100% with nothing but back roads & have that on my device for turn by turn navigation.
I can design such a route on my PC using Google Maps but there seems to be no way to import that route into maps or navigation on my device.
So does anyone know of an app that will import my 100% customized routes onto my device, or an app that will allow me to design 100% customized routes right on my device?
I know I used 100% a lot, but I'm really trying to stress that I don't want any route suggestions from the app itself!
Thanks in advance!
*bump*
I was under the impression if you saved your route to "my maps" in Google Maps you could access it from your phone...

Sounds like you could use the"Dual Sport Map App" I think a search on the play store for dual sport maps and or craftycoder will bring it up. (Sorry for no links,I'm new and not allowed yet)
While it sounds like it may be for off road use only ,it isn't.
A lot of people use it to cruise the way out of the way places and they even share their routes on the web site the developer made. You can also use that website to map out your own routes then load them to your phone. The site address is dualsportmaps DOT com
Some think the App is expensive at $20,however it was well worth it for me just for functionality, and he is giving a lot of support to the backroad bombing community.
I started using it when I wanted all the functions of the high end motorcycle GPS units but didn't want to spend the $600+ entry fee.
So I got a large screen android device, a blue tooth head set, a bar mount and that App.It has been working great.
In case you haven't come across it yet, there is a forum for riders like you(advrider DOT com) and the developer of the App maintains a thread there for extra support.
A google search for site:advrider DOT com 691537 should bring you right to it if you know what to do with the "DOT"
Hope this helps
Oruxmaps is pretty sweet and it is free. You have to create your own maps (did mine with maps from google maps) and stitch them together but for free I consider it worth the time. Here is the link: google play oruxmaps

Have you used any other apps/methods? I don't have a Bike (yet) but I feel like driving the same kinda routes with my WRX, I want curvey roads to push my suspension modes.

No I have not. Still searching for something better, but the method I'm using works.
