LG (USA) refusing to honor warranty, how to handle? - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I send in my AT&T LG G4 because of the camera "green blob" issue after trying the PR firmware. Got it back to AT&T 10o firmware and sent it in. LG states that scratches on the screen void the warranty. There are actually no scratches on the scree, there is a glass screen protector I (stupidly) left on there with scratches.
I'm reading tho that this is a common issue with LG refusing to fix issues because of cosmetic issues. I've asked to talk to a supervision but was told none was available and they couldnt promise to have my called returned.
Anyone have success reaching a person to deal with?

And why is warranty void for a function of the phones camera when there is a scratch - especially since you didn't ask for a new display.

They have the phone, they emailed and said scratches void the warranty. When I called, the guy on the other end was just reading off a script and it was impossible to get any other information how a scratch (again, there isn't any scratch, I left a cracked screen protector on when I sent it in) would be an issue with a camera problem.
What I've read on other threads, because of a scratch, they won't open up the unit to fix anything for fear of making the scratch in to a crack.
Anyway, just curious if anyone had luck reaching a human with answers.

that sucks... you sure your screen isn't cracked? they may have removed the cracked screen protector and found actual cracks in the screen, if that's the case then you are ****ed, you may be able to negotiate a screen replacement on your cost and a camera fix on the waranty

I've asked for them to send it back, it's possible it got damaged in transit, so I'll look, but that thing had a ton of bubble wrap on it. The only reason I posted was I found a few older threads with similar issues but no one seems to be able to reach anyone other than a overseas call center with no information and unable to escalate it to anyone at a supervisor level. That's the real frustration.

that's one of the reasons i won't toss out the original packaging. it's the best way to send the product to warranty.

I purchased my N7 Flo in August but I left the country before it came.
Finally got back and it was sitting there sealed in its plastic.
Used for 2 days before I noticed a patch of discoloration on the back panel. Can't be wiped off or anything and doesn't fade at all.
Have been suggested to slap on a case (which I've been using) but still not too happy about paying same price as everyone for one with a cosmetic defect.
Don't really wanna ship back to Amazon, do you think Asus would do something if I sent it back?

Since the nexus gets international warranty form Asus, i think they will honour their warranty. But as for cosmetic defect, i am not too sure, perhaps you can search for your local Asus service center and ask them..
The problem with this sort of malfunction is whether it can be releated to a production error (warrenty) or user abuse (no warrenty). Innocent until proven guilty doesn't always apply here. I had a similair case with damaged screen coating on a Grouper. Over the phone and mail I could not convince Asus, with clear pictures and related cases found on the internet, that it was the result of a production fault. In the end I was offered to send in the device and have it examined by them. If they would decide it was the result of user abuse, they could either return the device for €70,- (95 USD) or replace the screen under warrenty. I didn't want to be at the mercy of some tech guy and wind up having both a faulty screen and taken €70,- from me. I put on a screenprotector, which circumvented the problem.
I say contact Asus support first and hear what they have to say. After, you can always decide to slap on a cover...
Cosmetic defects not hindering functionality of the device are not covered according to Asus warranty policy

Your patch is pretty large compared to others I've seen posted. I believe folks mentioned they were able to remove by rubbing a microfiber cloth on the patch.
=/ sigh, that's pretty lame.
Thanks for the suggestions~ have tried the microfiber idea too and unfortunately it did absolutely nothing.
Oh well. I guess I'll see how it goes with Asus but won't be too hopeful if cosmetic defects aren't covered.

G4 Screen cracked?

I've noticed that many users have had issues with the screeen becoming damaged easily. Anyone experience this issue? Should I just use the LG replacement thing or try to fix the screen? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have insurance, that's the way to go. Otherwise, most cities have cell phone repair stores that can repair it in a couple hours.
Unless you have touch issues, then use the LG replacement thing. Just call customer service to see what they will do.

Cheaper and not too difficult to do yourself if you are competent with a screw driver, have an iFixIT tool kit etc..

This will not really help you now, but could after you get get your screen fixed.
Look into getting a tempered glass screen protector. They cost less than $10 and the good ones carry a lifetime replacement guarantee. Since they are glass, you get the same tactile feel and it protects your screen while doing it. The tempered glass screen protector really takes the brunt of the force if phone is dropped and will shatter before anything happens to your screen. Well worth it!

I don't know. Perhaps someone else on the forum has that information. I think they sell original screens but it's best you contact the sellers directly before ordering.

Any update since October? I`m facing the same issue. I have googled a bit and found some complaints related to LCDs from Aliexpress claiming that they are no so bright and blurry, sometimes with white spots.
I have also find only a glass replacement https://www.aliexpress.com/item/5-7...lgo_pvid=aec8908f-0e28-4202-a650-ab20f3981970

If you can get the fast delivery, then you can give it a go. Although it's a risky operation,it might be alright in the end. The service should have some experience if they say that for other brands/phones they have succeeded. It might be ok, but always keep in mind that something might go wrong. And it's not worth waiting 2 months for the glass and another 2 for the display.
Edit: you can google the process and you will see how it's done for other phones. They need to have special devices.

Very difficult. They make it look easy on youtube. I attempted a glass only repair on a nexus 6. You have to have correct amount of heat, and the LCD is very fragile. Too much heat will damage the display, but you need enough heat to soften the loca glue to be able to separate the glass from the lcd.. I even had a scientific dry bath at my disposal to get the right temp.. Not worth a home repair attempt IMO.
Cost of the le max 2 is just the reason I bought this phone (vs a $600+ device) and put on tempered glass from Ali express for less than $2. Will you consider replacing your phone for $200?
My wife broke her tempered glass protector twice on the max 2. Easy fix, just replaced the tempered glass cover. I'm just saying I learned the hard way, on a more expensive Nexus 6. I wasn't aware of tempered glass protectors then. Even after destroying my lcd (by trying a glass-only repair) and ending up buying the lcd+glass assembly, I still didn't get the phone's frame tight with the display assembly to make it acceptable.
I tried to repair lcd once for another phone. It took me 1h just to disassemble the phone, and half an hour more to try to carefully separate lcd from digitizer. I failed and then there was no point spending another hour puting the phone back together and had to throw all those tiny parts to the garbage. Think about this before you try.
Home repairs of such kind are a no go. This is why I encourage him to go to the repair shop where they do that kind of repairs to the screen. They do have a special heated plate with temperature adjustment, a vacuum device that eliminates any bubbles between the lcd and glass, etc. Also do note that not all the repair shops are doing this. Most of them are collecting phones for the specialized shops and charge an extra fee.
In conclusion, this kind of repair is not for everybody, and it would be best done in a specialized repair shop. For reference, check the following video:
I know it's written in romanian and for an Allview, but I guess that most of the things are understandable to get the idea of how complicated the whole process is for any home attempt.
So, after a month in repair center I have my phone back. The screen is an original one with digitizer changed. Between digitizer and screen there are some bubbles, buttons are switched, like back is on a left instead of right and the bugged issue... They are very undeterministic and do not always work and sometimes they work without even touching so... Apps are switching and so on... I needed to disable them and use gestures instead.
The repair was about 40USD and digitizer 15 USD... It is hard to say whether it was worth it or exchange the complete screen.

Replacing the screen + digitiser on this model is pretty easy provided you have access to a hot air gun. Took me about 15 minutes and I'm in NO WAY a pro. For the price of a new screen I definitely wouldn't attempt a digitizer-only repair.

And I can say, It's same as the original one in every detail(Even production date so close). Replacement is very easy with tool that came with screen.
BTW, You have to buy glue(B6000,E7000,T8000 or whatver) for fix it in place.

General Hairline crack, inner screen, feels like screen protector.

Anyone else have hairline cracks on the fold of the inner screen? Mine feel like they are on the screen protector, my screen display is fine. Anyone else experiencing this?
Talking to support now, supposed to take to an authorized repair place. They say it covered by warranty due to normal use causing the cracks. Being sent to an authorized Samsung repair place.
Just inconvenient.

Did you end up getting this fixed under warranty? Mine did the same thing (and the entire screen protector along the fold ripped up all at once).
I did a chat and they told me to take it in to get it fixed, but I'm curious as to what they'll do.

Yes I did. They sent me to a certified repair shop.
They essentially replace the whole interior screen. The process worked, but the guys at the location were not that knowledgeable. We plugged it into a computer and it didn't see the USB access. Once I got it home, it worked on my computer. Who doesn't have the drivers for a device that they repair?
Anyway, it works great now.
That's good to hear it worked out for you. My inner screen also failed in the same manner with hairline fractures and black line down the middle turning it in to a Microsoft Duo. I've been on the phone with Samsung three separate times and have had nothing but resistance from them. They sent me to a local repair shop and the manager told me I must have gotten a piece of sand in the hinge or something....huh? He said go ahead and start a claim, but the final word was with him. He also said he got rid of his Fold 3 because he didn't want the same thing to happen to him. So there's definitely a problem with some of the units out there. I'll be sending mine to Samsung soon. I have no confidence that Samsung will actually cover this under warranty in my case due to the treatment I've received from their customer service. It's upsetting.
What a bummer... I got my phone Sept 24, and now on March 24, I just noticed that I have a small crack right where the phone folds. I am going in to Verizon tomorrow. The "Samsung Care+" wanted me to send it in with $249... This is definitely a warranty issue.
I went to my local corporate Verizon store this morning. They will treat it as warranty and my replacement phone arrives tomorrow. The area manager was there, took pics of the screen, and the phone to document current condition (which I appreciate) before approving the swap. Plus she says they are monitoring how many come in like this. Mine wasn't the first. They suspect, like many here, that it's the screen protector. (I guess the Flip 3 has issues too, but my daughter has one that is so far so good).
Now, as long as Verizon doesn't declare my phone as "damaged" by me it will be a free swap. If not, they'll try to bill me. But the area manager agrees that it looks like a defect (and it really is a defect).
One last gripe: I guess I was too eager to get my Fold 3 to realize that the "protection plan" carries a potential $249 fee for a broken screen. Thank goodness this is a defect.

do you mean that they suspect the screen protector is broken or that the screen protector is causing the UTG screen to break?
The thought was that the screen protector is cracking, but not the screen. I've not lost any functionality over the area that is "cracked".
Yeah, when I ran my finger nail over the cracks it would snag. It was absolutely my screen protector...which is factory installed and therefore falls under the manufacturer.
Yes, I think this will be an issue. I don't think this will totally kill the market or much of the sales. My replacement is still going strong, and I haven't heard too many others experiencing the cracks.
I'm sure the Fold 5 will have it all together. Hahaha

Checked online, there is a few threads on the Sammy forums, and removing the inner screen protector does NOT void warranty. If the display/screen is damaged in the process, then iti is void.
My replacement protector, OEM, got it's first hairline crack. Gonna remove the OEM one and replace it myself. That way I can just replace it when it goes bad.
NOW I'll say I wouldn't recommend this phone to anyone because of this issue. Samsung failed here, but there's a chance to learn from it and improve it.

getting the same OEM Samsung screen protector was a bad decision and you should've known that already since it broke once. Samsung's screen protector is an ultra thin plastic layer that's why it breaks. I removed it myself and knew its nature. That's why I installed the Whitestone Dome Film instead (myself) and this protector is elastic and bends easily with the fold. You get definately no cracks because it's a film layer.
try it and you won't regret it. By the way it's so easy to install, and costs only $10- $15

Question Z fold 3 factory screen replacement warranty contradicts itself

I've just waiting on my new Z fold 3 and been reading into these screen protector issues and where we stand when or if they fail.
The startup screen says you can't remove the screen protector as it's part of the screen. Then you go on the Samsung support page and warranty for the phone, and it's says when your screen protector is damaged, the answer is you're able to replace it yourself, if you need any more support contact us ?
So why put the disclaimer on if they are now saying it can be removed and replaced by yourself ? Does this still cause warranty issues ?
Just after clarity before deciding whether to carry on with normal phone insurance or Samsung care +
Any help or experience would be appreciated

The stock screen protector can be removed from the main screen. I've done it myself and replaced it with a better one since I was getting hairline cracks. There's also postings on Samsung's forums stating that it does not void the warranty to remove the stock screen protector.
The problem that can arise from removing and replacing is damage to the actual display. So they're discouraging it. But in all actuality, you can easily remove it yourself. There's a lot of videos in walkthroughs online.
its not an issue replacing it, just seems like Samsung says one thing and means another. to be honest, I love this phone more than my s22 ultra, so I've bought Samsung care + so between that and the warranty I should be able to use it care free and just enjoy it, because its an amazing bit of technology, and reminds me of the of the first time I saw the original galaxy note ( and bought it)
Mine started lifting up on the fold and Samsung sent a home repair van round. He said it would need a complete new inner screen as you can't remove the protector without the screen cracking. Now I know some here have removed the inner screen protector but I didn't bother pointing this out as I also had an issue with it not folding flat anymore...

I just booked repair to my inner screen protector and that's the information I got. I have care+ and if they charge me for screen protector replacement I will never buy samsung phone again.

Just in case that our engineer will include it, to your Samsung care+. It depends on their inspection on your device. Once we have the device and done with the inspection, our engineer wil send you an email regarding the full information. Upon checking here the replacement may not be covered by the warranty and additional costs for replacement will be charged if the screen protector has been damaged.

Oh okay, that's good to know, I'm UK based too. I took out care + as well so technically there shouldn't be any questions over the phone being repaired or replaced
