There's a tool out called ChevronWP7 which allows for sideloading of apps but to be honest I'm not sure that's going to let you do what you're looking to do. I too have been in the iPhone world since the beginning when jailbreaking was done through the terminal haha.
Anyways, the ChevronWP7 "unlocker" seems to be along the lines of what you're looking for but others have cautioned to stay away from it as it hasn't been tested extensively and from what I've read they say that you could possibly get banned from the marketplace, have your xbox live account banned among other things which could render the phone somewhat useless. There are a few threads on this forum with lots of good information. I don't think any theming or significant 3rd party apps have been developed just yet. I'm sure it's just a matter of time.
Thanks for reply and info much appreciated mate.
Honestly I can't put down this phone at all I love it mate honest. Still learning but loving it every sec.
What you got yourself. Phone wise.
I just learned to sync windows contacts today from old iPhone.
Catch me on Xbox live if ya want. deise Boy
Thanks again
Please post in general!

Hey everyone,
I'd like to pitch in and start developing on WP7, thanks to my new LG Optimus 7. I have a working knowledge of C# and have earlier developed on WP6.5...
Unfortunately though.. the only computers I have on my disposal are Macs... Anyone have any luck developing for WP7 on them? All the tools I found don't seem to have open-source/Mac alternatives.
Please don't suggest a VM.. its too slow... Boot Camp is a pain (have other issues with Apple on that one!)
Thanks for your help..

Get a cheap Dell, put it on your LAN and remote desktop into it.
Or make your first goal a port of Microsoft's dev tools for Mac.
Ok, I hate macs with every fiber of my being and wouldnt use one if my choices were using a Mac or watching my legs go through a wood chipper but cant you just emulate the silverlight tools.... or I also heard macs can dual boot windows so you could use a good OS.

linux is unusable, however some people enjoy spending their days on forums looking up any number of random things from trying to make your cpu fan speed scale to getting your wifi card to work. That's for home use, as a server in a data centre in a pre-configured setup it's ideal.
Windows hasn't changed fundamentally since NT, even on 7 you still can't move a file while in use, sometimes you can't delete a file because it mistakenly *thinks* its in use, PCs are noisy and innefficient when running that OS. Stuff is just harder and more awkard to do, e.g. checking your IP address is over 7 clicks, if you make it that far and don't get confused by all the weird pictures of routers and globes. Even on 7 you need to resort to running cmd to do simple tasks that are a couple of clicks at most on every other OS.
With macs it comes down to the fact you can work quicker on it, there are less problems, the frameworks and dev tools are well designed, used by Apple themselves, so you can write apps faster, and make more money, and less frustrations along the way, leading to an overall less stressful more successful life. But I'm not going to argue with you, some people enjoy pain and just live unlucky lives, making bad decisions. All very strange to me...

Yes, we enjoy making bad decisions. We love knowing that if our webcam breaks we have to send the whole computer in or buy a new one. We also love the fact that our market share is ridiculously low because we offer no form of freedom. I have multiple phones with more gaming capability as well as functionality as a mac. Their are less problems because who wants to create "problems" for a 6 percent market share when they can clear 90 percent with their "buy our antivirus to fix our virus" crap. All mac has going for it is the fact that they "just work." Well, I built a PC more than 2 times more powerful than any Mac I've seen and it works fine for a much lower cost. If I were incompetent and planned on opening emails that congratulated me for winning 100,000 dollars and all I had to do was download the sign-up form then yeah, I'd use a mac. For now I like gaming, the cloud, applications that are worth anything being designed for my computer, freedom, being able to repair it myself, and not having to bend over for that nazi Steve Jobs.
If your webcam breaks you take it to a store which fixes it for free in a couple of days for 3 years, and if it isn't fixed to your satisfaction you get a brand new laptop, the latest model even if yours is years old, and its all taken care of by a hot girl. Yeh most people would totally rather spend their time instead under the desk with a screwdriver or surfing newegg comparing specs and benchmarks of harddrives that copy an extra 0.5MB/s faster. I totally understand your point there...
yes because people go to the apple store for the hot chicks, yeah, thats the case. Then they go without a computer for 3-5 days all to get a webcam repaired. Then they go back home and enjoy adding effects to photos.... seeing as how thats about the most amusing thing a Mac can do without emulating windows files.
Looks like no-one has the answer.
You need Visual Studio at the moment (AFAIK) and that only runs on Windows OS's.
Sorry.
Thread Closed as it's derailed off-topic.

I think that we really need to build some interest in hacking this kin phone. It appears that there are very few who post but there are a lot more viewing. I decided to create this poll so that maybe we can show it to some skilled mobile hackers letting them know that this phone is not dead and has amazing potential. I encourage everyone who reads this to vote in the poll. without every single person showing interest we may never get anywhere. So don't just read this but sign up and vote. Show your support!!! Lets generate some interest. Vote now and then go spread the word.
I'm interested in seeing the phone get hacked so that all its minor annoyances can be fixed but:
1. do not have the kin twom phone (eyeing to get one)
2. suck at programming
I tend not to post because I am letting the experts (who have the phone and skills to hack the phone) post their progress and such.
I been preying/stalking former Kin phone developers out on LinkedIn as johnkussack suggested but no one has replied back to add me as a contact so that I could send them private msgs asking for their help.
Maybe if we could also start calling Microsoft/Sharp/Verizon. If we have enough interest maybe we could persuade them. Maybe one of us could just get lucky with talking to a "certain" individual who is willing to give some information out. Someone mentioned on another post that Verizon was willing to give out the rom with permission from Sharp. It might also help to remember the person you talk to so that you can call them often and develop somewhat of a "friendship". Any convincing people here?
theres actually some good progress in ideas, but no progress in actually succsesfully hacking it. We just need time.

Time and Information to be exact.
I would love to see this thing hacked
It has such great hardware for (now a feature phone). 8mp camera, 720p video recording, 600mhz Tegra processor, 256mb of RAM, and 8 gb of storage. Those are low-end (atleast on the processor and ram side of things) smartphone specs. If someone got android or hacked the actual Kin OS, it would be amazing. Honestly, I have to wonder if Microsoft (since they gave up on the phone) would hand over any info on it. I highly doubt it but eh you never know.
10...
I think this is why we dont have any serious phone hackers helping out.

Has anyone tried this?
Hook up your kin and see if it is recognized by windows phone connector?
it can recognize zune HD so why not kin?
and if it doesnt recognize kin we could make a driver...
any thought?

If no one makes if for "fun", no one makes it for recognition, and if no one does for money, you are allowed to begin to suspect what the Kin status is.
Why would you want to hack the Kin2. this guy i work with has one. He absolutly hates it. I would have to agree with him. I tried to use it for a couple mins and gave up.

The reason we want to hack it is because the only that sucks about it is the OS. It has great hardware and could be an excellent feature phone if it were programmed better. Just one thought, look at the how smooth the interface and touch movement is in the zune portion of the phone. It is much smoother than the actual OS. Basically, Microsoft did a poor job with the OS and so the hardware is not being utilized to its full potential. That is why we are trying to optimize it.

exactly, the poor OS development ended up it not using its full processor potential, its like they had a deadline to make it, and they werent finished....
Hey guys hows it going? Doin good? Great. Good news for ya
So I have a mac with the Kin Media Sync.
I also have info.plist files that "tells" the computer what do do with the phone. Hmph. I'm Achieving success so far with this phone but no work will be done til after my exams which is in two weeks. I've managed to get the phone into a "writeable" state but no leaks or how to's will be said. My reasoning is because this is my work and I will only release on how to do it if it is successful. I remember just this sunday, I got my message inbox to pop up while still using the camera. That was a surprise to me because I didn't think it was possible. I really want to get this phone hacked for my benefits as well as others. If you want part of what I'm doing and want to help since no one besides @johnkussiack is helping, then go ahead, instructions are below. I promise you guys I will get this done. This week is a no go for me because my Great Grandpa just passed away. :/
So if you guys have any comments/questions, I will be on for the remainder of the day. Since I have the data plan on my Kin, and any of you have questions, shoot an email to [email protected] and I will answer any questions or concerns you may have.
ALSO, if you are LEGIT and are going to help, I will think about sending you a file on how to do what I am doing. But as for now, programming for this week is a no-go. Sorry guys
So how much of the phone have you been able to write to or read from? Can you see the native file system, or just the Zune media area, where the music, pictures, videos, etc are stored?
On my phone, as I've pointed out before, I have the contact file from the Verizon store. It's stored on the media area, but I have been unable to retrieve it using either Windows or Mac. If you know how to pull it off, feel free to provide some information on how to do so, and I'll see if I can retrieve it so we can play with it and possibly get contacts to/from the phone.
Although i'm glad, as far as i know, info.plist files are just references for finder to know the folder/apps info easier. What explains hardware issues to mac are "kext" files.
I am interested in what you got, although i can't define an uncertain "writable" status. Things are writable or not (even if only 1 bit is written).
Anyway, there's still a week or so till my "dev" device comes to test this, so i can wait for your next one.
Forget the above, i received my packet today. New toy in my hands.. goodie goodie

Awesome, man!
Like I said on facebook you need the share what your doing with users that want to hack the phone jsut as much as you do. There are plenty of people here that have some knowledge also such an Kussak that you can share with where he can help.
I like what your doing but dont disregard the help others could possibly offer when you dnont have the time. Thanks.
I love my KIN but I am tired as hell of this crappy OS we have. If we can get a new OS which the phone is already the best feature phone already. This phone could be unstoppable but the Crap OS we have now hurts it bad.
Okay John, want to team up and see what we can get out of this phone? I'm willing to take it to it's limits.
To all good people on xda. Just wanted to say thanx for all of the great information, advise, patience and above all hacks, devs and genius. I have been easing myself into the world of andriod for about 6 months starting with a x10 mini pro and finally obtaining a desire. Now thanx to this fine meeting place, (as well as constant need to mess around, fiddle and improve my gadgets) i have finally unleashed my desire's full potential. Starting of nervously on the mini pro, (with a arse twitching moment of bricking said device, and subsequently un-bricking and passing it on to my girlfriend, in the process bringing in another driod user) to being sat here on my day off, running the coolest rom ever (MIUI!!!!!). All of this has just completely restored my faith that people can work together for the betterment of all (also got into the bargain ubuntu on dual boot on me laptop). Sorry to sound cheesy, but i am total pessimist and it is quite nice to go somewhere where the people GO OUT OF THEIR WAY TO HELP!! It may sound like a small thing but hopefully the ethos that exists on this forum is an indicator to the future of the web connect world where s all like this. Well we'll see.
So got that of my chest, now all that there is left to say is
Thanx Guys. You ROCK
Cheers + 10char
