[Q][P] Using encryption on your tablet - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Q&A, Help & Troubl

Hello!
I'd really like to use encryption on my tablet on a custom ROM but am failing spectacularly. Neither on Schischu's Lollipop nor on Schischu's Marshmallow ROM my encryption attempts were successful.
As nobody answered to my posts at all, I am starting to wonder if encryption is used by anybody on our P605. So I'd like to setup this poll to get a rough overview about the use cases of people and understand if it's simply my fault or if this feature is not used and therefore not tested.
Of course, I'd be happy to read some comments below if somebody made it working on a custom ROM (like Schischu's) how this was achieved.

Hi,
The fault does not lie with you. I havn't checked encryption on the note 10.1 2014 custom roms but I did check it out on the Note 4 forums. And all the custom roms that I've come across there don't support encryption, either because the dev's don't view it as important (because no one uses it) or because it's see as secondary compared to speed and battery life.
It's a pretty dangerous game to play without encryption, knowing that the lock screen is so easy by-passable. I was able to flash TWRP and root the note 4 without the device auto wiping user data. So e.g. flashing a custom rom onto the device in order to bypass the lockscreen, and therefore being able to access all the person's personal data and apps is pretty much childsplay for a person that's the least bit into tech.

Sad to hear that, but thank you very much for taking your time to post a reply! :good:

Indeed - a mobile device is lost or even stolen quite fast. And since we already use custom ROMs and TWRP it's trivial to just access the data via ADB. *sigh* Well, I'm even thinking about going back to a rooted stock ROM with firewall to increase the safety of my local data.... Let's just hope the custom ROMs will support it eventually.

What are you using a firewall for? Can you link me the firewall your using?
I use xprivacy in combination with a firewall(it's an old one and not available anymore on the app store).
There exists some apps that can wipe your phone automatically if you enter the wrong password to many times, I was using one but I can't find it anymore (locker).
-V

Sure! I am using AFWall+ which makes it easy to select the right processes thanks to the log. And it's not a proxy or so (iptables frontend), so it works on all processes and all connections (WiFi, Cell, Roamin, LAN, VPN).
The firewall in XPrivacy is much more finegrained, as it allows you to block certain IPs/Domains while AFWall+ is blocking the whole network access. So I'd say it depends on your needs and, to be honest, the time you want or can invest into setting up your tablet. I bought XPrivacy and am just downloading the profiles from the net as it takes too much time for me at the moment to find the settings on my own

I have upgraded to Android Lollipop + Root + TWRP.
I would use the full data encryption but it seems that you always have to enter a (long) password each time, when you start or unlocking (!) the Note 10.1 (2014 Edit.)
On my Huawei Mate 7 with Android 5, i can use a Passwort for the start and a pattern for unlocking. So, thats very good and fast, if i have to unlock the smartphone.
Only on my Samsung Note 10.1 there is no pattern methode for unlocking the tablet available.... (the same sh** as in Android 4.4)

While you can change the encryption password to be different from the unlock password (using the CLI), you can also use application like f.ex. Delayed Lock that modify the locking behaviour. I am not letting my phone lock when I am at home (WiFi, not that unuseable GPS/cell from the new Android ), for example. With those two approaches using a good encryption password is no hassle at all

Flashing ROM after turning on Encryption

I've either made a hugely stupid error and turned on encryption and nobody will detail me why this is a bad idea.....
Or nobody who looks at my post in huge threads seems to want to answer this question:
I enabled encryption in my Galaxy Nexus settings. I am rooted on a custom ROM. I want to update/flash a new ROM.
Will things be different? Can I update like normal? or am I going to need to wipe/reset everything in order to flash an update?

Neither Clockwork Mod or even the stock recovery can access the storage on the device after it's encrypted. The fact that the stock recovery can't is exceptionally poor form on Google's behalf.
You can't even perform a factory reset. The only way to unencrypt the device is to flash it via fastboot.
I posted some details in this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392037

Had the exact same problem and found out this solution the hard way. You can't do a factory reset to remove the encryption because the bootloader is different when you root.
The only way is to fastboot as mentioned above. You need to use the files provided for going back to stock. You should find them on here. Good luck.
I found this out the hard way as well, but I think this is the great benefit of encryption. If someone were to get a hold of your phone there would be no way for them to access anything without having or breaking the passcode. For serial rom flashers this kinda sucks but if you really care about your data and are willing to stick with either stock or stock rooted then this means you actually have a phone that's truly secure.

You'd have to be extremely paranoid about your data to want to encrypt your phone. I couldn't care less, nothing of importance is on my phone anyway

I run my business on Google Apps and my data would be sensitive. Not everyone uses there phones just for personal stuff.
I don't use it for that either! I delete SMSs after they've been read, email is downloaded to my PC once Outlook is opened and bar Facebook/Twitter and a small selection of other apps there's nothing personal on my phone
Funnily enough I use it as a phone more than anything

Factory reset won't work. You need to completely wipe the phone by loading the stock img from Google that came on the phone. It is the only way it will work. You can find out how to do that on here, sorry I don't have the link on hand though so just search a bit. Feel free to PM as I had the exact same issue.
EDIT - try this toolkit to go back to the stock rom. You loose everything but it should remove encryption.

I don't know why Google don't give the option to decrypt from the Google Apps dashboard. So annoying! Good luck, hope you get sorted.
Thanks for posting that - in the end the g-nex toolkit ended up bringing the phone back to stock and rooted the device again and I've now successfully factory reset the device and am back to running a custom ROM with root and no encryption
Thanks for the help

Yaaaaey glad you got sorted. Encryption from GApps at the moment is woeful. I am sure they are working on it.

Hopefully they are as if you want a real secure device, its pretty pitiful to bypass if in the wrong hands.
Does this only apply if you've rooted your device and flashed a different ROM? If you have an unrooted phone and turn on encryption, will you have the same issues (i.e. unable to do a factory reset)? Is this only a problem with the Nexus or would any Android phone have this problem?
I ask because the company I work for is talking about forcing users to encrypt their phones if they want ActiveSync enabled. But they also want to be able to run a wipe on the phone if necessary. It would seem to me that encrypting the phone may prevent that as an option.

Touchdown.
It's a little pricy at $20 but well worth it in IMHO.
A remote wipe will only kill off touchdown and optionally SDcard storage.

Yeah, they are already looking at using Touchdown for devices that don't support encryption natively, but those that do (support encryption natively) they just want to enable the devices' own encryption.
So I'm still not sure if with encryption turned on, will it prevent a phone from being remotely wiped?

When you bypass it by flashing a new system over it you wipe all data that was ever on the phone. Ok your phone could be stolen, but no-one will ever know what CP you were hiding with that encryption. I'm very happy with the fact that there is a save backdoor... imagine forgetting your password for some reason or filling out the wrong password on setup... when that happend this thread would have been a "bricked my phone by forgetting the password. Who wants some nice spareparts for his phone" Q&A

Just don't tell them you are using touchdown. I've tested the remote wipe in Android, it can kill the whole phone. The only way to keep your personal info safe is to use touchdown

I think you're misunderstanding my intentions. I'm not looking for a way to bypass the encryption requirement they may be introducing. I'm just trying to understand if it will cause a problem for the remote wipe functionality if the phone is lost or stolen. If it will, I'll have to let them know so they can decide what is more important: encryption or remote wipe capabilities.
If a remote wipe functions regardless of encryption being enabled, then it's a moot point.

Phone storage encryption - tips, things to avoid, or general advice?

(Verizon HTC One M9, S-OFF, bootloader *** UNLOCKED ***, Software status: Official, TWRP recovery installed, Android version 5.0.2, HTC Sense version 7.0 Software number 1.33.605.15)
I'm anticipating a requirement in my near future to turn on "Phone storage encryption (Protect content on this phone with a password)" under Settings -> Security. When I did this under similar circumstances on my HTC One M7, it seemed to adversely affect the performance of the phone. I encountered a lot of random freezes at various points (after entering my unlock PIN, waking up the phone, switching apps, even occasionally during phone calls).
In fairness, I had a lot of stuff on internal storage on my old phone - pictures, audio, etc. - that I now store on my 32GB microSD card on the M9. Nonetheless, the prospect of encrypting my internal storage is intimidating, especially because it's apparently a one-way operation, and there's No Going Back if the phone performance starts to lag as the old phone's did.
Has anyone else experienced any similar troubles after turning on Phone storage encryption? Also, I'm not averse to moving off of the HTC stock ROM; I just haven't done it yet. Is there a particular ROM that seems to perform better -- or worse -- with encrypted internal storage?
Thanks.
Good question and I realy would like to join in.
Normaly Google says, since Android 5 Storage encryption should be standard and phones with native Android 5 should have hardware accelerated encryption. But there is no information thats says which phone have this hardware accelerated encryption.
And in addition most phones with native android 5 don't have standard encryption activated.
So is there anyone who tested the M9 with storage ecryption?

This article says AES comes with ARMv8 wich is used in Snapdragon 810 http://www.chip.de/news/Rueckzieher...sselung-in-Android-5.0-Lollipop_76997991.html
encryption disabled dial pad and texting
I have a sprint M9, twrp recovery, rooted, and flashed Viperone ROM.
Everything was working great.
Because of work email needs and the need for Microsoft Exchange, I had to encrypt the phone. So I did.
After encryption, I cannot make outbound calls. I receive calls. Just cannot dial them. Seems like the problem is with the dial pad. Lets me enter the number, but when I hit "call" it just goes away. I cannot type internal phone commands like ##1234## to get information. Just disappears.
Also, I cannot send or receive text messages.
I went into TWRP to revert back to my backup. And of course no backup is there. Everything is encrypted and unreadable by TWRP. I have read a lot on these boards and thank you. I cannot find much written on this subject.
Sprint reports everything is fine and working on their end.
So frustrated. Seems like an easy setting or fix. The dial pad is not reading something from an encrypted file?
Sorry for the ignorant language. I am very new at all this. Any ideas?

HTC uses proprietary (non-AOSP) encryption. As a result, TWRP won't be able to decrypt your phone if you have encrypted it on a stock or stock-based ROM.
In theory, TWRP can decrypt when encryption is performed with an AOSP ROM (CyanogenMod, CandySiX, et cetera). Unfortunately, encryption - though functional - doesn't behave as expected even on these ROMs. Your phone will indeed be encrypted successfully, but some ROMs (CyanogenMod) won't re-boot after encryption and other ROMs will boot (CandySiX) but still not be decrypted by TWRP.
TLDR: If you want encryption, go for it but know that you're locked into that choice.

Hey, thanks for the quick, informative reply. I may just hold off for now, as I'm likely to root after warranty is up. But,FYI, From what I read in the HTC user guide, I could undo the HTC encryption with a factory reset, which I would probably do when they stop updating, and I move to CM or other ROM at that point. I appreciate the advice greatly, as it sounds like personal experience, or you're well informed on the subject, or both.

My pleasure!
To confirm, yes you can absolutely remove encryption via factory reset.
On my U11 (Oreo 8.0/currently stuck on ViperU2.1 as nothing else seems to boot) I can't seem to decrypt my device (its lagging a bit due to encryption I believe.)
It won't allow me to decrypt in Settings, nor will it decrypt on a hard reset, nor allow me to change it after a hard reset. And reflashing Viper still has phone encrypted.
Any tips?

Google-free ROM with working phone encryption wanted

Hi,
I have a LG G4 and use the stock ROM but want to get rid of google's observation and bloatware. I am looking for a custom ROM that focuses on privacy and runs stable on the LG G4.
It must
- be usable without Google
- provide a working full-phone encryption + SD card encryption like the stock ROM does
- provide fast updates (my stock rom has security level january 17 which is ridiculous)
I already tried LineageOS with the newest version and it worked well with one exception: I could not encrypt my phone. I tried it several times but I either got into a boot loop or Lineage OS booted but all my preferences and apps were lost (like I did a factory reset, but I didn't). When I then started TWRP recovery it asked me for my password and declined it altough it was 100% correct. The only possibility was to wipe all data and install LineageOS again. Very strange: I could also "encrypt" my phone without providing a PIN, password or something else. I would expect an error message to be displayed but there was none.
I also tried Ressurection Remix but the encryption failed as well (boot loop after encryption finished).
Could it be that TWRP causes these problems? Has anyone successfully intalled a custom ROM and encrypted the LG G4? Maybe another ROM? I am very open for new suggestions
For now I had to reinstall the stock ROM because that's the only way I can encrypt my phone...
Regards

Does nobody care for encryption?
1984 is real, how can somebody just don't care?
How can encryption protect your privacy?
But you can use stock rom too.
Just reset phone, set it up without google account (you have to delete the accout before resetting fyi)
root it, use afwall and jdisable the common lg and google stuff.
Use floss open source apps from froid.
Thats it.
If you want to use stuff like network location without gapps the you have to use LOS. If you want more google stuff without google you have to use crdroid rom.
But I already tried and its a pain on the ass.
Lol yes encryption is something where many people say it's completely useless! I love those discussions where people say why do you care about encryption? Well it's their fault not mine I encrypt everything and always that's why I build TWRP with decryption support because no one else cares.
I use RR marshmallow plus FDE but I am about to switch to LOS 13 because of the security patches inside
Iirc (it's more than 1 year ago) it was a little bit tricky to set up because as you already noted nobody cares about encryption! everything like rooting or custom ROMs have all one thing in mind disable encryption and that's what's happening when you install root or when you use a custom ROM normally.
If you can wait until I have switched to LOS I could tell you more but I have no time frame for this so if you don't want to wait you should investigate the fstab file and if you're using Super su the installer scripts as well

Updates Mid 2018
Hi,
as I had no success last year when I wrote this post, I lost it out of sight. Now I would like to give it another try.
Unfortunately I cannot find any custom ROM with a current version that also supports LG G4. LineageOS supports a lot of phones but no G4, the same for RR OS.
Is there another alternative that officially supports LG G4 and also works with encryption?
If not, I think it is time to move from my loved G4 to another phone. I do not feel comfortable with a phone that got no updates for almost two years. This time, I would directly focus on finding a phone that gets regular updates (like the new Nokias, as far as I know) or has good support for custom ROMs (like Nexus/Pixel). Are there any suggestions for a phone that is comparable to my G4 (I especially love the camera) but supports current custom ROMs or has regular updates from the manufacturer?
Looking forward to any recommendations!

Officially - cypher os supports your G4
Unofficially (but maintained by myself, @steadfasterX and @kessaras) you can choose from LineageOS, AICP, Cypher (newer versions with more patches - @kessaras is also the official Cypher maintainer so no difference there) and RR
Anything Oreo supports encryption - anything nougat doesn't

Broken Screen Cast:eek:riginally Rooted Sunshine, Viper Rom, data wiped, safety net fail

Broken Screen Castriginally Rooted Sunshine, Viper Rom, data wiped, safety net fail
Hello, hopefully someone can help me. I have a HTC 10 unlocked US version that I rooted a bit ago with Sunshine and had Chainfire SuperSU installed. A big reason I ended up with the HTC was the root support as my Samsung S6 proved unrootable and thus I was not happy with it since I couldn't use Titanium Backup or use AppRadio Unchained with Miracast due to needing root to allow the touchscreen touches on the Pioneer radio to communicate with the phone. Before I was using an S4 with an MHL cable but the microUSB port gave out on me.
I was still using the stock ROM after root as I was happy with it. On occasion I need to use Barnacle or WiFi Tether router but had problems getting them to work very well. I ended up deciding to switch to Viper Rom which was actually what I had on the S4. I picked Magisk root so I could use Android Pay in the future if I wanted. I did a full backup in TWRP before this. After installing I tried to use Screen Cast to my Screen Beam Mini 2 and it failed, I then tried with the Smart TV and that failed as well. Both of these worked on the stock rooted ROM.
I restored the backup from TWRP but when it booted, it asked me for an encryption password which was my lock screen password. Problem was I've never had either on this phone and tried the 2 pins that I use for most things to no avail. I gave up since I had Titanium Backups and did a Wipe all data in TWRP. This got Android back up and going again, so I reinstalled Viper Rom and it still fails the SafetyNet check in there. Hide is turned on and I chose every google app during install and have not installed anything else at all.
Does anyone have any idea what may be the issue? Venom Tweaks and Venom Hub are on there and it still will not connect to any wireless display. So after wiping my phone which was working great except for the screen casting, I'm not any farther ahead. The firmware is still 6.0 if that matters. If the Viper Rom won't work with Screen Cast, will any of the custom Roms or do I need to go back to stock rooted? It was quite the disappointment when I did the restore and couldn't access the phone without wiping first, defeats the purpose of a backup which I've never had an issue with before.
I found some guides but they were all about if you had SuperSU on there before which with the full wipe I assume does not apply.
Ironically maybe, my new job is customer support for software and the machines it runs and that is more then frustrating as there is not many help documentation and there are all kinds of things that can go wrong and the error messages are not very good at all. For the guys with years of experience it's probably not as bad, but the job requires travel too, so they aren't always around. It's bad enough when my own stuff has problems I struggle to figure out but when someone else is trying to do their job and you are their lost resort to fix things, it's pretty stressful. So I apologize if this was something found by an easy search, I really do try before I ever post anything but just like work, there are so many variables and I don't know which ones matter in this case.
Anyway, thanks to anyone in advance that may be able to help, I"m out of ideas aside from flashing stock firmware and rooting from scratch again, which was months ago and I don't remember the process. Things were a lot easier back in KitKat it seems.....

Hi,
I'm not quite sure what you're wanting help with. Get screen casting working, or getting back to stock?
Hello, I'd just like to get screencast working on Viper or another custom ROM if possible, if it's not possible I should be able to figure out how to go back to stock and root again. Screencast was working on the stock ROM with root. Being able to restore my backup would be nice but I think when I installed Viper I did not check the force decryption as it said you had to format the data in TWRP and I tried it without a wipe, which did work. I still don't get how it set a password when I was never prompted for one and never had a lockscreen password of any sort. I didn't unfortunately do a backup of Viper.

I did a data format from TWRP which uninstalled Magisk I suppose and the Manager app says System not Rooted yet still fails the safetynet check, that makes no sense to me.

I cast my screen with Viper10 and Chromecast. It might be the casting app you are using.
Thanks, at this point I guess I'm going to flash the stock RUU and then figure out how to get twrp and Viper with the Magisk back on there since I've already wiped the data and my backup is encrypted. Is it okay to use Sunshine or do I need to use another method?
I was trying to use the HTC connect, maybe that is the issue. I need to cast with Miracast not chromecast, is there an app that will work for that? My Screen Beam Mini 2 actually got broken in a traffic jam, laptop bag fell off the seat when I had to slam the brakes and caught and ripped the power jack out of it I tried a chromecast instead so I could possibly use that just to watch a video or something without the cell screen on, but using the phone for the hotspot does not let it connect to the chromecast I found, so I went back and exchanged for another Miracast dongle.
Thanks again for the help btw, since I lost my data I just need to figure out how to get to Viper rom with Magisk after flashing the stock RUU and then if I need an app besides HTC connect to use Miracast, what that app would be.

For returning to full stock, go on HTC's site and get the latest ruu for Unlocked. Run it from your pc, while being mindful of the instructions and warnings that come with the file. After that, if you want a custom rom, flash the latest twrp and whichever rom you want.
You don't need Sunshine for anything you mentioned - Sunshine is to get s-off on your phone while is not needed here.

Thanks for the help. I did end up doing the ruu ( which on windows 10 took some work,) then flashed twrp again and installed magisk 13. Safety net passed and screen cast worked. Then I installed viper Rom. Safety net failed but it had overwrote with magisk 12. I flashed magisk 13 again and then safety net passed so looks like that was the issue even if not the only one. Looks like titanium backup has put everything back on too.
So only thing left to figure out is how to do a backup that doesn't encrypt the data with an unknown password but it appears everything is working including the battery charge limiter app.
Thanks again

Glad it worked. What is the battery charge limit app you mentioned?

ROM wanted with PDroid, cryptfs and gapps

Hello everyone,
I'm new to the whole thing of custom ROMs and ran into problems finding one that has everything I'd like to have... From what I've seen lineageOS would be the first thing I'm looking for, but in the end it doesn't really matter to me
(1) PDroid: is the reason I got into this in the first place, but then I found that the patcher only works with pretty old versions of android (2.x or something). Is there a way to get it into newer ROMs? Or maybe some other program that does similar things?
(2) cryptfs: I did download a zip-file for this with a bunch of files in it - I'm just not sure what to do with it. (My guess would be to install it with TWRP together with the new ROM.)
I already have unlocked my bootloader, put TWRP on the phone and I am currently running some OSwith super-user-permission. Also, I have fastboot and flashtool on my windows PC. If you need more information on the state of my device or what I'm trying to achieve I'll gladly answer of course! It's just that probably I'm not aware of what else could be important to know...
Thank you very much in advance!

Could you explain a little more why you are using these then maybe I could direct you to an app for a similar purpose. And I have something on the way it just might take a while longer yet
So, my original wishlist originated from a talk by Deviant Ollam at SkyDogCON 2013 (and a few other cons I suppose). You can find it on youtube if you're interested, but I'll describe what my take away was:
PDroid can manage all required permission for all your apps. For example you can replace your actual current location with random coordinates, or even choose any place on earth. A lot of apps that ask for such permissions won't work at all if you just deny them and PDroid seems to work around that. Maybe there's a newer thing that can do the same or similar.
Cryptfs should enable me to have seperate password for unlocking the phone and the disc encryption - so I can have a nice and long password for the encryption and actually use the phone (details in the talk). I noticed that Cryptfs has an app in the appstore that enables this, so I don't need it included with the ROM. Disc encryption is required, though. (Over the weekend I tried to encrypt my phone in its current state and it failed twice, getting hung up in booting - the wiggly blue lines during startup)
For the OS: I don't want too many unnesessary apps pre-installed, just a clean lean thing for performance, I guess.
For PDroid you could try xprivacy on xposed module and for different types of password you could try droid lock on the playstore
Hey could you link me to the stuff you used to root, unlock bootloader and etc.
This is what I used:
Unlocking the bootloader (official Sony step-by-step): https://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/
The ROM with Su privileges was taken from this forum: https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-m5/development/kernel-stock-marshmallow-kernel-root-t3453072
TWRP: https://twrp.me/site/update/2017/05/19/twrp-3.1.1-0-released.html
