I'm thinking of alternatives to my current setup--running MySQL for a unified library on my Macbook. It works great but I put a lot of money into it and don't want it running 24/7. I've never tried apps like Servers Ultimate Pro or KSWEB but both claim to have php, mysql among other things. AFTV is hardwired and I think it'd be more than powerful enough but I'd rather get some input before I attempt it. Anyone given these apps a try? Thanks
BTW--If you're thinking of attempting it you need to be rooted. I just have doubts because I haven't heard anyone talking about this but the apps have been around awhile.

Sure. Why not. Linux is linux. If you can get a properly compiled mysql, go for it.

Thanks rbox. I guess it must just be a question of which brand of linux. They vary slightly in terms of what system your on(set up process for mysql) But Ill play around with it when i have a little spare time. Thanks again!

i was wondering if theres anything such as windows-controlling-an-android remote assistance software?
reason why i ask this is because some people are not good with android and they keep asking me for help with it. instead of meeting them up in person I was wondering if its possible to control their android device from Windows?
get the android vnc app from the market
No results found... what's the app called exactly?
Isn't android-vnc something that controls your computer from your phone? Original post requests just the opposite: the ability to control someone's phone from his computer.
Teamviewer??
I any luck yet
I think the OP is looking for the opposite -- Remote support to control the Android device FROM a computer, not controlling a computer from Android
I'm looking for the same thing to help my family out. I currently use VNC and a custom script to do remote PC support.
Droid Explorer, but you need basic adb (android-sdk) installed, but it gives you full control of your phone. You can push apps, take screen shots, and everything inbetween
Search remote web desktop. There is a control addon that works very well, and all in a web interface. No adb necessary.

Webkey. Although it might be too powerful for what you need...
You can try AirDroid.

Sorry guys, i have bought a tablet for the grandma, and tried to help her many times over phone conversation. She has now the basic skills to the tablet, but as you know the android can be very embarrassing and surprising...
I really need a remote assistance software WITHOUT any rooting and other miserable solutions: just simply install and use.
I feel myself as a victim of a fascist raping. Do you guys or do the manufacturers really think, to help for a 70 years old lady is an extreme requirement?
The tablet: prestigio pmp7070c, fantastic hardware with the looser android. The winmo 6 would be far more better than this miserable android.

You'll have to piece the link together as I'm not yet allowed to post links on XDA.
It's not free. But this will work.
Hello there to all the souls of the xda forums.
im new to wp7. never used one before like 3 days ago. i like it, great device my surround is. but im not here to tell you about how good it is. we all know its good.
im here to ask if theres any real hacking going on with this thing yet. im looking for at least some kind of command line.
from there i could use tools such as aircrack, nmap, metasploit, SET, etc.
ive had an iphone for about 3 years, booting iOS and Android. i am used to hacking from that, but at the same time i know there a bigger user base for those devices, so theres more devs for it. i just wanted to know if anyone has already started on such a project before i dedicate alot of my time to developing this for you all.
BTW i am not interested in pirating apps, cracking apps
With enough effort, command-line interface *might* be possible - the OS technically supports such things - but the underlying core is Windows CE. Even less so than NT, CE really isn't meant for a CLI; apps are written with the intent of being run on a graphical interface. Also, having no POSIX compatibility and only partial Win32 compatibility, a lot of apps that you're used to from the desktop (or from POSIX-based phone OSs like iOS and Android) aren't going to be available.
That said, if you want to get started in the WP7 hacking space, there's certainly plenty to do. One project that I have on the back burner until I get some more urgent stuff out of the way is a SSH client. There are a number of things that are required here. First of all, we have homebrew Socket support, but the official SDK lacks it so you'd need to use a native Homebrew DLL. Second, there's no official command line interface, so you'd need to write one. The second point is all sorts of fun, since what you're really writing is a terminal emulator.
Other interesting projects include getting a unified cross-platform approach to writing to the filesystem, or even reading from all of it (instead of the relatively small portions currently accessible) or figuring out how to make third-party apps run in the background.
thanks man. I think I'll work on getting a full file browser for the phone. That should happen , i think, before anything else. As far as a terminal emu, it sounds like its going to be more of a chalange for me. Again, I'm used to more Linux and UNIX systems than I am windows. I had to reinstall windows 7 onto a partition just so I could sync the phone with the Zune software Microsoft insisted I use.
So is anyone currently working on the file browser? Has there been any progress with it? If so, who should I contact so I can help?

Thanks. Just found that page
Made this thread so I can stop spamming the other threads with my annoying questions.
This thread is pointed towards someone that can help out by telling us how to get a Linux Distro runnning specifically on Fire TV.
So if anyone knows how, please assist us by doing so.
My main goal is to get a Linux distro with the extra capability of running Windows programs like PJ64 and many other great Windows programs.
First thing is,I need to know which one is absolutely the best one for running Windows programs at top performance through VM,Wine, etc.
I need this really,really badly.
*talks in your ear*
Really,really,badly.

Why do you need PJ64? is there some n64 game you are super obsessed with? most of the android emulators work very well on most games
Banjo-Tooie runs slower on Android than on PJ64,always causes a random exit, and always freezes when trying to enter the unga cave.
With PJ64,I should get much better speed and never have the same Mupen related issues.
I also have a bad experience of Majora's Mask getting its save data permanently corrupted time and time again on any edition of Mupen for Android.
There is also tons of benefits with not only Linux, but Windows usage as well.
I can do thing that the Android OS can't do such as:Multiple Windowed programs, yellow highlight text and better flash in a web browser, and more importantly, the right click function using my K400r for things like Flash Player real-time quality toggle.
Hopefully all of these things can work when done on a Fire TV with Linux plus Windows non-emulation.
I do have a massive 32GB USB stick for storing whatever I need.
I also hope someone finds the actual Fire TV equivalent to the USB stick mounting function so you no longer need to use a seperate app to mount/unmount your storage manually.
You do realize that the Fire TV runs on an ARM cpu, not x86, right?
It will be very cool, if we can run linux on fire tv.
I found other krait boxes works well, so I have a hope.
Since it might not even get that far if I don't,here's some links to one nice thing, especially since now it made all features free and removed all ads. (even though I can block them with AdBlock Plus)

And the main website...

I hope to at least get a fully enough functional Linux for the desktop computer charm with right clicking for a real context menu.
Maybe there is a Windows lover's Linux Distro for any other method that looks and almost feels exactly like Windows XP or Win7.
Edit:Also, the XDA development thread for it.

If anyone ever finds out how to get any form of Linux running,we will also need a way to delete the massive 2GB of Amazon's video caching to make up for the large amount of space needed for the Linux installation.
I still have a burning desire for desktop quality functionality on my Fire TV.
I am sure that many others might feel the same way.
In some wild dilusional chance, does anyone think that goat simulator (at least the older one) could run on Fire TV (then again, newer versions can be more polished) if we got access to running Windows programs?

As someone pointed out earlier even if we get linux your odds of running winxx are pretty slim as we are on an arm architecture.
Any VM type situation would only work for arm code and there is no windows arm. (well a long time ago there was an arm NT).
In summary I am not a developer just an android enthusiast with a very good understanding of the rooting/modding side of the community on multiple devices. I am trying to side load some apk's from my rooted Sony nsz-gs7 to the firetv in hope to get the IP Bluetooth remote (NSG-MR5U) to work with it but that's aside the point as there is already a thread on that.
When trying to install any of the apk's from that device I get "INSTALL_FAILED_MISSING_SHARED_LIBRARY" and I was hopeful that someone with a bit more knowledge here could help me deduce how I can determine what shared libraries its missing. Maybe someone can shed some light on something I can look into to try and move forward. I might just be trying to make the impossible happen.
The other part of this post is I am curious seeing as I do have root access to the NSZ-GS7 and its IMO one of the few decent google tv devices out there with root is there anything on there that could be beneficial for future fireTV developers, such as information related to the search subsystem, default launcher, etc. It would be neat to see if maybe some of the NSZ-GS7's functionality could be ported over easily. Maybe not but I wanted to extend the offer since I may be one of the few that have it. Thanks for everything you guys are doing, things are shaping up nicely on our fireTV's!

I think it generically means you are missing part of the Google api or an associated apk. Have you added anything yet like google services framework?
Also, do NSZ-GS7 even run at least jellybean? if not that's one of your main issues. Most GTV apps prior to jellybean are totally different than normal android.
I finally figured out the deal with the missing libraries and now just have to troubleshoot a new issue with "INSTALL_FAILED_DEXOPT" which I'll chase down. Looks like the nsz-gs7 runs honeycomb 3.2 so not sure what that will mean in the long run but I'll keep fooling around with it while I still care. Thanks for the info so far.
My DSL is down, now I have nothing on my Home screen; is this expected? I thought I would still be able to access "local" apps like Plex, but I have nothing.
Indeed - you do.
(I'm not supporting any Plex related requests. People who depend on Plex, for me are lost. Someone else point him/her to how to use a second launcher in parallel.)
I already understand Plex, and I have played around with other launchers on the Stick I just happen to like the stock launcher. Kind of disappointing that stock use of the stick is dead without internet access.
Thanks for the feedback.
If no one else is stepping up, I guess I have to. Not because of the (very slight) passive aggressive note in your response.
"Already understanding Plex" is just another way of saying "I dont even want to learn something different".
Complaining about Amazons design decisions, especially those that are supporting their business model (the value of "always on" to them) is entirely futile. Much more so when you are complaining in here (not many PR guys at the dance).
And the solution for your problem would be to use FIrestarter (just one sub forum away).
Just dont use Plex if you can avoid it. They have made political decisions based on catering to the lowest common denominator of user expertise, which dont make sense from any other standpoint. And they catered to content provider interests in providing them a way to impose platform specific rights management. They are the flag bearers of a world we are trying to avoid. Where perceived convenience wins by default. Every time. Regardless. And they are exploiting Kodis open source base to be able to do it.
Also, their only claim to fame was to be able to circumvent a rights management issue on Apple devices, by throwing computational cycles (transcode your entire library!) at it. Thats a faulty business model that only can exist, because people are making uninformed buying decision, and then start caring later.
Wow, ok, so you hate Plex. Forget about Plex for a minute, his complaint is still valid. No internet = no home screen = no access to anything. Substitute "local games" or XBMC or any of several other apps that don't require internet access for Plex. Call it a design flaw or intended behavior, it doesn't do us any good. He also wasn't originally complaining, just asking if that's the way it works.
On a positive note, I didn't know there were replacement launchers that didn't require root (I haven't been following those kinds of things), but since you mentioned it I had to check. I may look into it and give it a try when I have more time.
Firestarter works. I tried it the day I read your question, setting up a blocking rule for the Fire TV on my router. You should be satisfied - when you get to testing it out.
Also, if I get people to show a little initiative - like you posting, that this is indeed a solution for non rooted devices and not waiting until someone explains the solutions to you, its worth it.
Also, as far as Plex is concerned, this is an opportunity for me to stress, why people shouldnt be using it, and that there are conditions which Plex was willing to satisfy to get listed in the Amazon store, that are harmful to consumer rights. Part of the price for me to get involved, is to get some of you in touch with a little bit of the ideology behind those projects.
To complain that amazon is doing certain things is not the end of evolution, when you could (and maybe should) also understand, why they are doing certain things.
Have fun.
h.
Ideology (and going way off topic) aside, Plex generally works well. I prefer XBMC for the most part, but Plex does have some advantages and can do things XBMC or others can't. Plex can be installed right from the store, XBMC has to be side-loaded. Plex runs on Roku, XBMC just doesn't (blocked by Roku, not a technical issue). Nothing gets transcoded by my Plex server for local playback, but if I want remote access to my media where streaming speed or device limitations require transcoding it just works. I also share my videos with a friend as well as watch videos he has. You can hate the hows and whys of what Plex does, but depending on your needs Plex is still a good product.
All that said, let me be completely honest. Other than not allowing gray area or blatant piracy type add-ons, I'm not aware of any harmful consumer rights practices. What else are they doing that I should be concerned about?

Just have AppStarter installed. And use it to access apps offline.
