Hi,
I am considering buying Nexus 5x, but I haven't found much about gps performance of this phone.
I hike a lot, so I am interested how does gsp module behaves in deep forest, in cliffs, between hills, and areas of "low" reception in comparison with other models. I had nexus 5 and wasn't satisfied with its performance. Sony z3 was much better.
Also, I am interested about battery life when using gps apps with screen on all the time (for instance orux, navigon, etc)
Thanks.
I got the 5x and have just found that the GPS sensor have issues. Do a search for GPS or compass calibration and you will find that many have issues. Basically the problem is that it does not indicate correct direction you are facing.
I was in a new town this weekend and tried using the 5x to get around and I found it very frustrating. You can calibrate your compass but it does not stick to long. 6p have the same issue. I hope it can be fixed with software but the compass seem to constantly calibrate witch keep throwing it off.
I would hold of and see if it gets fixed if it is important to you

I find compass close enough for government work. GPS receiver in N5X is phenomenal. I get cold fix without A-GPS in under 20 seconds.

Happy you have a unit without issues, I too get a GPS lock within short. Have you also tried using it for navigation without any issues?
My real life experience is that I would consider the compass as "unstable", not being able to show correct heading. The issue is similar to what is found in the Nexus 7 2012.
I am no expert at this, just going by my own experience and the following:

I use N5X for day to day commute for a few weeks now. Never had any issue with with GPS position. I cannot comment on compass accuracy inside vehicle as I don't use it for navigation. Bear in mind that inside iron vehicle with multiple high current consumers there may be too much "noise" to make any compass stable.
Thanks for your answers, in the meanwhile I ordered 5x, and got it at friday. Gps fix and signal is great, and I dont have any issues with compass for now. I used it with PeakFinder Earth and gmaps and it works nice. With peak finder it is little bit shaky, but it is on pair with Sony z3 and other "high end" devices that I used.
But then again, I have device only for few days. I will report back after few more days of usage.

The GPS Receiver in the HTC P3300 is working really well, not only inside the "heavy" window of a cockpit, but it also is NOT speed restricted like some GPS on the market... the proof in picture (see zip attachment)
And if anyone there know of a nice GPS Program for pilots (IFR)...i'm interested..
Mike.
Yea, but your cheating, your closer to the satalites

Yeah that's cheating!!
What software is that you're using?
That seems iGO - I use it as well. Consider it much better than TomTom.

Thanks EazyVG, that does look a damn nice system to use, very easy on the eye.
Thats a whole lot faster than the 90knots I manage with mine while flying one of these:

hi there...i tried my xda orbit in the plane from england to israel and that didnt seem to work at all, not connected to any satalites, i also use igo...granted i am a bit of a novice with gps...and when the gps wasnt working in israel i relised i had to change the maps....did it not work because when i used it i was above the sea and not a country...it would be cool if someone could develop the gps system to work on long journies on planes...tell you how long left and show you the route your taking...wouldnt have to be too big as you dont really need loads of detail.
any help would be great
Ariel
i forgot to turn off TomTom on my 3600 during a 3 hour flight and when i picked it up, it was registering a speed of 442 miles per hour!!! simply amazing. this drained my battery super fast though...probably because TomTom was still trying to identify street names as we were flying...
No cheating, this s just my requirements for the gps
Actually this is not Igo, it is MioMap v3.2 (same manufacturer though).
Its basically the same software, but MioMap looks much more stable on the P3300 than Igo, its fast, and it has the same maps (I used it in israel during last Pessah ).
If your gps is cold (not used for the last 4 hours), you might have to wait very long time before it gets the first fix. Especially if you move before catching the first fix.
In the cockpit, it catches satellites pretty easily (lots of windows..).
However if you fliy as a passenger, better be seated near a window and makes it catch the first fix before the aircraft start to move. I followed a whole flight from geneva to brussels (flying as a passenger).
I did manage to start my gps inflight in the cockpit, and it got a fix in less than a minute.. (having use the gps an hour before on ground though).
Seems to be lots of variables for the first fix calculation.
Using Memory Maps CAA charts mine has always got a fix within a few seconds, though it takes longer using TomTom.
The Cadets I teach have loved having a print out of the GPS overlay of their training flights.
My Orbit running Memory map at 410kt as a passenger, took about 5 minutes to get a position fix.
i like that igo, but it aint half buggy and glitchy... gonna check out that minimap though!
you tracked the whole flight? my orbit can last about an hour and a half before needing a charge with the igo on
From it's full charge at 06:30am I have my phone on standby all day, except the 2 hours I'm flying and then the GPS is on using Memory Maps Pocket Nav. For the 1 1/2 hour trip to and from the airfield the blue tooth is on for the hands free and on returning home at approx 19:30 the battery state is around 30%
Hi all, I am a G2x user and the random reboots are killing me but everything else about my tegra 2 just rocks. Especially the GPS.. which is one reason why I jumped from samsung vibrant onto something else.. and the lack of camera flash was pretty annoying.
Not that you Sprint people would know but anyways..
My roommate just got this phone and a few of my other friends have nothing but good things to say about it, and as soon as I put it in my hand i was reminded of how bad the GPS was on my vibrant... well I downloaded the app GPS Test from Chartcross and compared his GPS to mine and I was instantly let down. Normally I would be psyched to defeat another phone with mine but with the sgs2 variant coming to T-mobile I was going to upgrade as soon as possible.

That is what I got with my G2X. His E4GT only locked on to 3-4 sattelites and was accurate to at most 150 feet. The phones were side by side so location shouldnt have anything to do with it.
T-mobile sucks in my area anyways, while others get 3G im still stuck with edge (dial up) network. Thinking about just abandoning the network all together. And was possibly gonna wait for the Prime but since that is most likely going to be samsung it will probably have a crap GPS radio as well.
How are you guys experiences with your GPS? How about signal strength?
Bueller, Anyone?
I grabbed GPS Test and GPS Status. GPS Test picked up 7/9 satellites and narrowed down to accuracy within 36' in about five seconds. GPS Status got 8/9 in four seconds, accuracy within 52'. This was sitting in my bedroom, on the ground floor of a house built into a hillside. Not the greatest GPS reception scenario.
Thanks man!

How well-calibrated are the accelerometers in your GNs? Mine seems to be slightly off. Laying the phone down on a level surface, this is the reading I get from GPS Status (which also displays accelerometer data):

The interesting parts are the "Pitch/Roll" numbers and the yellow "blob" at the center of the compass. The pitch being a bit off (N01 = 1 degree tilt down/forward) can probably be explained by the "hump" on the back of the phone, but the roll being off (V02 = 2 degrees tilt to the left) is a bit more troubling. I have to noticeably tilt the phone to the right to get a 0 degree reading. Ok, so this isn't really a problem in everyday use, since it's a pretty small deviation, but it's a bit annoying to the perfectionist in me. So I would like to know whether this is "normal" or if one should expect a perfectly calibrated accelerometer.
EDIT: Actually, when I turn the phone vertical the left tilt error seems to pretty much double. Also, even though the phone shows close to 0 degrees up/down tilt when level, it doesn't show anything near 90 degrees when held vertical. It's more like 85 degrees, and I have to go way past "zenith" (so the phone's screen is angled slightly toward the floor) for it to show 90 degrees. This means that in apps such as Sky View I have to tilt the phone up a bit to get the horizon vertically centered on the screen.
Are these accelerometers just that inaccurate, or is it just mine?
Anyone? I would really appreciate some answers!
are there not apps that you can use to "recalibrate" and correct this? With all measurements systems there will be inherent errors due to the hardware, which is why the recalibration comes in, and there are simply too many variables, eg how flat is your flat surface? Is the casing on the phone flat?

No, there's no way to globally calibrate the accelerometer. You can do it locally in certain apps, but the problem will remain in every other app.
And about the "variables": Of course such things will affect things a bit, but they can't account for all the issues I'm seeing. Not even close.
Nobody has two minutes to try this out and check what results they get...?

This is another feature of my SGSII that I LOVE and miss on my GNEX (thank GOD I still have my SGSII).
On the SGSII under Settings there is the ability to calibrate your Accelerometer and the Gyro as well. Why they did not incorporate that into the GNEX I dont know. Maybe there is a Dev that can port the settings over?

Yeah, it seems like such an obvious thing to include on the OS level, since these accelerometers clearly aren't always perfect out of the box (I've read about several people who have similar issues with their GNexuses).
How is the one in your phone? Do you experience any of the problems I'm describing?
I am having problems with my 6506 GPS locking. I have tried three factory resets, and after contacting Sony, two software restores.
Yet I continue to get "searching for GPS" when I try to navigate either in Google Maps or Navigon.
Location services are all on.
Would a new ATT sim work? Any other help appreciated.

Yes
Download GPS test apk to check it or *#*#7378423#*#* do GPS location test
Me also - turning into a deal killer for me
I'm having a similar problem. Stock firmware (rooted, not unlocked) and GPS fixes are problematic. This morning in Chicago suburbs (i.e. no tall buildings or obstructions) the first fix took maybe 2 minutes. I then ended GPS Test, waited about a minute, started again. Time to first fix was 48 seconds, which is extremely long for a fix when that warm.
I've also been comparing to the Galaxy S2 (I777), and doing so WITHOUT a sim card meaning it's AGPS ability is very limited, and even so every single time it locks faster and had greater resulting accuracy.
The problem is consistent with the GPSTest program, also google maps (and the resulting accuracy shown). The signal level of each satellite when it does see them is almost entirely orange on the ZL, but generally yellow or green on the SG2 in the same area.
As a quick test I am standing in my office, it's got a corner view south east. I powered up the GS2 which had not been in use for 2 days, and it got a lock in 9 seconds according to GPSTest's time to first fix. No SIM card either.
Then I did the ZL in the exact same spot, and after about 4 minutes I gave up. Screen shots below; notice that 3 additional minutes have passed on the ZL and still no lock, and I started them at the same time.
I've also used the GPSTest to clear and update the AGPS data, it made no apparent difference.
So far, even with the camera's over processing, I love the phone. Everything else I've got straightened out, but this may become a deal killer, as I really do use the GPS.
Is it just me? (Well, and the OP?).

Edit PS: Just to head off one area -- I am familiar with the NTP pool issues, have tried Faster Fix, but the issue is not that -- the issue is inadequate satellite signal, it's just not receiving enough/well-enough.
is lack of response indicative that the OP and I may have hardware problems and this is not normal for this device?
I called Sony, they had me do a complete restore with PC Companion, which reloaded all the software as best I can tell; I did not root or anything after, and spent 10 minutes in a parking lot without a lock. Later in the morning I tried and got a lock in about a minute, which is still slow, so it still is flakey.
And despite three attempts at calibrating the compass, when using it (and not GPS) it's WAY off, part of the time about 30 degrees, then as you swing around through (real) sourth it jumps drastically.
It's going back today, will see whether they have another to try, but this is a deal killer for me if the GPS doesn't work. I'm hoping the relative silence is a sign that it's not a general problem (a la Captivate of years past) and so will probably try another handset if they have one.
No issues with the GPS or compass on mine (C6502). It takes about few secs (usually <5-10 secs) to lock the position. Screenshot below was taken while testing GPS indoors (locked on in 8 secs).
New Handset
Oh what a difference a new handset made.
Kudo's to Sony Store in Wisconsin (an hour north of Chicago). I called, they had one, drove up and they swapped me out. One of the reps also spent time with my old phone and never could get a lock.
The brand new handset locked in a measured 7 seconds from the system test menu, cold start. THAT's what it is supposed to be like. I just tried indoors at the hotel in an elevator (glass sided though) and about 10 seconds.
So definitely had a bad handset. Definitely a working one has acceptable performance!
Thank you -- being able to explore here kept me from assuming that the model was poor and just returning it. Happy camper again. to the OP JUST GET IT REPLACED!

Sent it back two days ago. New one should be here this weekend.
I am really tempted by the Find 7a, it looks decent on paper but I am reading a lot of things that are putting me off, can owners comment on their severity or if they are indeed problems?
Bluetooth - lots of reports that it is flaky. I can't live with this. I need a solid handsfree connection in the car, and preferably solid audio out too. Is this a software problem or did they put crappy hardware in it?
Battery - plenty saying the battery drains like 30% overnight in standby. This is not good. Is it resolved in Color OS 2.x beta? Any better in CM?
Storage - oh man. Why did they do that? Way to cripple a phone.
ROMs - I know they are pretty open with an unlocked bootloader but I am not seeing much in the way of ROM development. It's pretty quiet over here and their forums aren't exactly buzzing with developers.
How is the state of CM11 on the 7a? Does it fix any of the issues mentioned above?
Any general comments on the handset? Is it worth the punt or in that price range better to go for something more established like a Nexus 5 or LG G2?
Thanks
C
I think I can answer all your questions as I'm involved with parts of the 7a third party development myself.
First off, the hardware is fine and top notch, all the things you read about are in software and resolved by installing nameless ROM (all of the things you mentioned).
The battery depletion overnight (8 hours) is about 3 to 4 percent on nameless ROM with Wi-Fi and 3g permanently on and NFC off.
The storage issue can be resolved by executing my partition tool which you can find on the official oppo forums together with the nameless ROM download.
As for your intention of using cm11, I would stay away from it, it takes forever to get things fixed on that and some things are still glitched on it.

Thanks @MrColdbird that is really useful info. Good to know the hardware isn't at fault.
Nameless ROM looks great and good to see some solutions to the crazy partitioning scheme. I assume you guys will be releasing Nameless for the OnePlus One too?! The One seems to have a minor hardware upgrade compared to the Find 7.
One last thing, I know it is personal preference but how do you find the size of the device, there is no getting away from the fact that it is pretty huge...?
Agreed about CM11 - they seem really slow at fixing things these days, perhaps they are trying to support too many devices and spreading themselves too thinly. They seem to fix one thing and break about a dozen more with each M release.
