So I had a custom rom (Hybrid X 5.0) and I tried to factory reset. Now it goes straight to download mode. The top of the screen reads
"Could not do normal boot"
I tried to flash a custom recovery but nothing works. No stock recovery or custom recovery works. The Odin screen shows "PASS" but when it reboots it just turns off. Can anyone help or am I out of luck?

In odin uncheck auto reboot and f. Reset time.
Have your phone ready to pull the battery.
Once you have done that plug in the phone and flash the recovery tar. When it's done unplug the phone, pull the battery and wait for say 10 seconds. Insert the battery and boot into recovery.
If you are using Odin 3.10.x use the "AP" slot to select the recovery tar. If you are using an older version of odin use the "PDA" slot to select the recovery tar.
Nope. Didn't work. It boots to download mode and says "Could not do normal boot

Flash this stock 5.1.1 rom (with ob7 bootloader) with odin by tx_dbs_tx.
Hopefully it can get you back to working again. If it doesn't work hopefully someone a lot smarter than me can figure it out for you.
Good luck!
It didn't work. I tried 3 times to flash In Odin and it failed every time.

Try a different USB port. Or a different version of Odin. Or different USB cable.

Okay, I found a solution.
Prior to this, it had been freezing and restarting by itself for a couple of days and I was in the process of downloading a new ROM onto my computer (not the phone) when it just stopped working.
My phone became stuck in a weird loop where it would not boot. Instead, it would act dead (not seem to respond to the power button) but It would eventually jump to Download mode and would instead say something like the following:
"Could not do normal boot. ODIN MODE (HIGH SPEED)"
and
"ddi : mmc_read failed"
I could not get it to boot normally, into recovery or even directly into download mode. After I would pull the battery, I would have to wait a minute or two to get it to even come back on because it would ignore the power button being pushed.
Every time I tried to flash recorvery, firmware, pit, etc using ODIN in the "could not boot normally" download mode, it would instantly fail and spit out something like
UDC START
MMC: mmc_read fail
ODIN : flash read failure
and a short bit of blue bar would be showing on the download mode screen.
Anyhow, I had to go help my son with some stuff and was starting to assume I would need to have the phone warrantied due to a flash memory failure.
I left the phone alone for two or three hours with the battery out.
Do not ask why this worked but, when I came back, it started to boot normally but reset before a full boot.
After again pulling the battery, I got it to TRY to boot into recovery. It didn't get into recovery but it tried.
I then tried to put it into download mode manually and reflashed the TWRP recovery using ODIN.
IT WORKED.
I then used recovery to flash a ROM and MY PHONE HAS BEEN WORKING EVER SINCE.
Hi guys,
I did have the same problem, i did fix it by first flashing CMW recovery using ODIN. after that i could enter recovery and in CMW recovery i did flash the TWRP zip file. I now can enter TWRP normal.
Sorry for bad english....
I hope this all help for you too!
Good luck!

It could possibly be because the battery was overheating causing the phone to overheat too. I know when I have attempted to do flash with Odin, boot into TWRP, and then flash new ROM that the phone becomes VERY hot. You have to remember, you're putting it through a lot of demanding processes in a short amount of time, and with some custom ROMS you're changing quite a few things. Not to mention the fact that it has to do the initial start up and depending on how many apps are on the phone/ROM it has to start all of those as well.
Not sure if this is the cause, but it's my best guess at the moment.

I accidentally flashed the kernel for my old SGS II International to my Epic 4G Touch, but I managed to get it back to stock eventually. Everything was fine for the past couple months, and today I finally decided to install the system update(which I just put off for awhile despite all the prompts). Then it gave me that white triangle and when I rebooted into recovery mode. Now it just stays in recovery mode no matter what I do. Reboot option? Reboots back into recovery? Factory reset option? Boots back into recovery.
The ok button should be the power button right? This is a bit different from my old SGS
i would try pulling the battery and attempting to boot into download
yea, try & get into download mode... power off>vol dn+power until download mode is on the screen. then use ODIN/HEIMDALL to flash a stock tar file.
I should have mentioned that I did remove the battery and leave it out for a few minutes several times. It just kept booting back into recovery. I did eventually find the jig I made which was able to force it into download mode. But heimdall just keeps giving me this "ERROR: Claiming interface failed!" message even though it can detect the phone.
So no one has any idea what to do about this?
Did you try odin? If that fails put a rom(.zip) in sd card and flash from revovery.
Edit: if you are goin to switch from heimdall to odin you have to unistall heimdalls drivers. There are instructions on how to do this in heimdalls readme file.

No, I didn't try Odin because I'm using OS X. I guess I'm going to have to make a windows boot partition. sigh
Well I guess I'll try to flash a rom from recovery first.
Well this is odd. It won't let me write anything to the sd card I normally use in it. It says it's read only. But uh....it always copied things fine if it was IN either this phone or my SGS II International when I tried to copy things.
I should just be able to put the rom on any micro SD card right? I have another 4 GB laying around here I can use if so.
Correct any sd should work!

You may have to go the route of installing Odin and flashing a full stock tar that includes ROM, kernel, and modem so it overwrites everything in that one flash. I don't think it is something you can do by flashing in a recovery

You have the stock recovery. That why. U can't flash an unsigned from from there. You are gonna have to Odin something. Either a full tar or maybe a kernel with cwm to flash something.

Well anyone want to recommend/link me a tar? I'm making a windows partition right now so I can run Odin.
And yeah I figured it was because I put it back to stock that it wasn't working. But if it's back on stock why am I still getting the white triangle with the orange exclamation?
In fact if it's back to stock the past couple months and been working fine then why did it decide to screw up when I tried to install the OS update?

I initially flashed the CM10 JB stable ROM successfully. The only problem I had was that I was unable to transfer files via USB to my computer, so I tried using the toolkit to flash the stock rom, but when it was flashing I got an error message that my phone disconnected.
When I turn my phone on I can only get into download mode. If i just press the power button, I receive a black screen.
I have tried using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1771687 to flash the stock ROM using ODIN but the phone freezes at the Samsung logo screen after the T-Mobile "4G Android" screen.
Any help is truly appreciated

you cant. You need to boot into recovery. Trust me you can get in it, might take a few tries. Try to boot into recovery without the usb cable plugged in.With the phone completely off, and unplugged do the vol-up, home +power combo til it flashes that first screen, it can be a ***** but youll get in
Try turning the device off, remove the battery and leave it there for 60 secs. Make sure the phone is unplug from computer and the hit vol up, home, power until the phone vibrate then release. This should get the phone into the stock recovery.

I really do not think I will be able to get in. I have tried it so many times and even previously could only get into CWM recovery through the app on my phone to boot into recovery. I could never actually get in holding the vol-up+home+power.
Is it possible to flash CWM recovery through ODIN and download mode?
I'm not sure why this stock rom is freezing after I flash it through odin.

i would suggest trying a different cable and if ur gonna use odin again, wipe everything (especially /system!) in recovery before booting into download mode for the odin flash. would also reccomend tryin the legit stock rom in odin (unrooted) if its still freezing on you.
Flash with Odin again, then after it is successfully completed power down phone you have to hold vol up home and power until you see some blue text appear in the top left corner then factory reset from recovery

If you couldn't get into CWM recovery before you screwed the rom then you just aren't doing it right.with phone off, hold up and home, then hold powered button for like 3 sec then let go of only power... but i think you are right the download mode skips the Samsung logo.the recovery puts up Samsung logo before booting recovery. Why can't you Odin a recovery partition ?

That they have, I took the battery out and let it sit for a little and tried it to get into recovery and it worked! I'm was able to boot up regularly after and I truly thank you all for the help because I was having a heart attack.
Hi guys,
Was trying to install a ROM last night in CWM Recovery, then I was having some difficulty, after each ROM swipe I was doing the Factory Wipe/Dalvik Cache Wipe/Cache Wipe.
Anyways, I ended up having to try and flash the pre-rooted Stock ROM, I used Odin 3.07 to flash it and in Odin it appeared to work fine, the phone was rebooting and Odin was in "Pass" mode, but the phone never gets beyond the Samsung boot screen.
I then tried to see if I could flash CWM Recovery in Odin and try and get into Recovery mode, it flashed fine in Odin and the device rebooted but still stuck in Samsung boot screen.... but I cannot get into Recovery mode manually, I even tried getting in via the Q3 Toolbox kit, and it says it cannot locate the device :/
So today, last desperate option, I tried flashing the un-rooted stock image for my carrier (Rogers), it seemed to work fine in Odin but it STILL just will not boot back up, still stuck in the Samsung boot screen.
Is this what a brick is? Beyond continually trying to re-flash the stock carrier MD5 via Odin, what can I do? Oddly enough the phone does recognize in the Q3 Toolbox for the Root options, just not for the Reboot into Recovery option. Is there something I can try in the Q3 Toolbox?
/Scared / really concerned
Please help, any help is appreciated.
Once again, I CANNOT get into CWM Recovery.

You're soft bricked, don't panic just yet. A hard brick is when the device is completely unresponsive. So far this sounds fixable.
To get into recovery, are you holding down the volume up + home key for long enough after the Samsung logo appears?
I'd try that again, but if not: Try to Odin CWM again but uncheck "Auto-Reboot" in Odin. After it's done flashing, pull the battery out, put it back in, and use the key combos to get into recovery. Hopefully you have a nandroid backup saved or another rom saved on your sd that you can restore at this point. (Please note that using this method may increase your flash counter, but that can easily be fixed with Triangle Away).
Hope this helps.
If its just hanging at the samsung logo..pull the battery, put it back in, boot into stock recovery ( vol up+home+power) wipe data/factory reset then reboot.
After that just download one f the one click rooted stock rogers roms. Odin it, Then use the S3 toolkit to flash a recovery only.
Should be goo to go from there
I am flashing the pre-rooted stock ROM's via Odin again, and then will try and flash CMW Recovery again but without the Auto-Reboot selected.
I was pretty certain I was holding the keys long enough previously to try and get back into Recovery but it never would actually go into CWM Recovery.
Will let you guys know how it goes, thanks for replying.

Just tried this.
Flashed the pre-rooted stock ROM, it went to Pass in in Odin, device never booted past the boot screen. Pulled out battery, re-inserted and then flashed CWM Recovery in Odin with Auto-Reboot turned off, that went fine to Pass, pulled battery and did the key combo to enter Recovery. I got the "Booting Recovery" in top left corner in blue for a second, held onto the key combo and nothing, just went back into the same Samsung boot screen and it's stuck there.

Hmmmm...one more thing to try. Re-download the stock firmware image in the unlikely event that you got a bad/corrupted download (also may want to try the version that doesn't have root injected). Then try again.
I'd say to try a different USB port on your pc, but since Odin is saying Pass that doesn't seem likely. Worth a shot though if the above fails (and also worth trying to Odin from a different computer).
Hang in there, you aren't hard-bricked yet! :fingers-crossed:
It has to rebuild cache everytime you flash, if you are clearing things correctly. This can take up to 10 minutes. Also, when the first samsung logo appears take finger off power button and hold the home and appropriate volume button.

Having same issue with SGH-T889. Any help? Heard of similar issue with Nexus 4. They have revert recovery disabler. Not tried on my Note 2. Is similar solution available for T889?
After flashing recovery in Odin are you booting up the phone (or is odin - i.e. auto reboot is checked)? There is a file (/system/etc/install-recovery.sh) that you need to disable to have recovery "stick". There are a few ways to do this, but my preference has been to do it within cwm/twrp recovery via adb after flashing in odin but prior to first bootup of phone.
Hope that helps!
Ive had luck un-checking auto-reboot in odin, flashing recovery, wait for it to say pass, unplug USB, pull battery, and boot straight into recovery by holding home + vol up when powering on.
This can be dangerous so make sure odin is completely done before unplugging.

Allot of us use TWRP Recovery and it works great. I think it is safe to say it is a Superior Recovery now. I suggest you use that Recovery.
You can get it installed easily by downloading GooManager from the play store, opening the app, hit your menu button and tap Install Open Recovery Script. That's it. Quick and easy!
For the people having a hard time, are you rooted? If you are just download goomanager and use it to install twrp

Or ADB command.
Have you tried: vol up+home and then adding power? When I do the 3 at the same time, it doesn't seem to always work but that way does. Just a shot in the dark.

not working boss,on my samsung wave 2
Looks like you may be soft bricked. You can always send it off to JTag for repair. This guy on eBay does it for $35 and he has 700+ sales with a 100% satisfaction rating http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=271160547396
If you can get into dl mode you can fix it. And make sure that you are trying to get into recovery the right way. I know in times of frustration getting into recovery can be annoying. ...a few deep breaths wait a little while then try for recovery. If not. .. down load the newest odin, erase and down load New drivers for your phone and attempt odin again, Flash stock rooted.

I am having similar issues i'm able to get into download and keis will begin emergency recovery but both options fail at system.img.ext4
recovery is un available and outs me into connect to keis screen which is download ot keis download.
would any one have a stock recovery of original DLK3 that would be for odin, or a location to download it. keis said if I could get into stock recovery....
thankx
i'm not even stressed yet I went thru this once with my captivate and I got out of that one.
I think that running kies and odin at the same time can disrupt odin. Not 100% on that but I always disabled or removed it first as per something I had read. Also if you have been running anything using ADB on your PC, use the task manager to make sure it is not still running in the processes. It has caused me problems getting a connection to the phone to stick.
