I recently (as in yesterday) got a brand new S4 Mini SGH-i257m. It was completely unopened, still sealed. Unfortunately, I may have some sort of issue with the screen .. but I'm not entirely sure. When I'm looking at a gray or dark gray screen, there appears to be a lot of discoloration and ditherting.
It's most noticeable when looking at a solid gray colored screen, such as the background in SD Maid. It doesn't look like a solid gray at all. Even pure white screens have a "dirty", dithered tinge to it. I know it's not burn-in. And I know I don't have a dirt and grease covered screen as I just got it yesterday. Even after wiping it down with a microfibre cloth, the effect is still there.
Is this normal? Do all S4 mini screens have this effect? Should I just get used to it (I probably can't unfortunately and will have to sell it), or try and get it repaired?
Yes it's normal for amoled screens...first i thought the same thing...?if you do a color test...you don't see them...you can see them only with grey colors
P.s sorry for my English
Whites can look yellow-ish. And as I've never used anything with a better screen I couldn't compare, but to me my screen doesn't seem as bad as yours. Everything is clear enough, no grease mark looking screen... Maybe watch a couple of YouTube videos of the s4 mini to compare yours. But it doesn't sound right to me... It may not be a 720p or 1080p screen but it's still clear enough.
Help!!! S4 mini screen white
Hi,
I have a Samsung galaxy s4 mini. it was working completely fine and all of a suddenly the screen just went white. I can interact with the screen and I can hear when I'm pressing things but the screen just stays white. I've tried taking the battery out and restarting it. after the start up logo appears the screen just turns white. I can get into download mode and I can see the screen.
'
what could be the issue.

It's normal, it's due to the non-standard subpixel layout:

That's really unfortunate, as I really like everything about the S4 mini, except for the way solid colors look like a dithered mess. Maybe I'll just get used to it ..
Follow-up for anyone who cares .. I got my hands on another S4 Mini, and the problem is still present on this one, but much less noticeable. It seems the new one I got has an especially bad problem with this issue. I will see if I can get it replaced with Samsung ..

So yesterday I got a brand new Xperia Pro. It's a great phone, but it seems there may be a problem with the screen.
It has a very annoying yellow tint to it. This becomes especially bothersome on white webpages, where whites look yellowish.
Compared to my Motorola Milestone and my sister's Xperia Pro Mini, the screen of my Pro is definitely a lot warmer as far as white color temp is concerned. I'd say its around 5500-5800K.
This is really annoying, because every other monitor I use has colder whites, thus making the Pro's whites look even worse to my eyes.
I'm planning on having the phone replaced, but I won't do so until I know this is a problem and not a feature.
Any other users experience this?
Thanks in advance!

When you say 'gamma' plugin, do you mean the nightmode function?
on live with walkman too
I am seeing this on the live with walkman too, did you find out if this is a problem with the screen (like the Xperia S issue) or if its a 'feature'?
and did you endup replacing it?
What about a flickering?
I haven't noticed it, but then maybe I'm not paying that much attention to the color hues anyway.
What bothers me at times is a slight flickering that I seem to notice randomly for a fraction of a second.
Has anyone seen these or are my eyes failing me?
Is there any solution for this problem? my xperia pro also got this problem +_+ anyone can help?

I can't stand them... they are a bad attempt to look retro.
I prefer a black phone, but I thought the white Sprint GSII looked pretty good. I had the black one before I switched to Verizon.
a friend got a white iPhone 4
it is getting lightly yellow at the edges, looks like never washed fingers, lol

Agreed!!!!!!
Much better in beige, you know, IBM PC style (kidding!)
White phone = hipster phone
Wanna be iphone.
My grandma beat me down and took my nexus. Sent from a jitterbug with beats by dre.
I love most phones when they're in white, but this one...not so much. Might look better in person though.
Ugly ugly ugly!
I don't understand the whole white phone thing. Maybe of it was red or neon colors imo that would be cool but white? That's dumb
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I would totally dig a red one.
they are also doing a 32gb hspda+ black one.
£614 wtf

In my opinion Nexus S in white, or rather black and white looked pretty nice I think that some phones do look better in white but there are very few.
This one looks like crap and I hope it's just someones photoshop work.
Stupid... but of course now my girlfriend wants one. At least she can respect the hardware/software I guess!
The sole reason why white doesn't make sense is because the black soft key area won't blend in with the bottom of the phone anymore. Same with the top notification bar.
It doesn't look uniform anymore from the bezel to the screen. Not only does the result look ugly, but it now seems as if the screen is somewhat smaller.

Agreed. Most likely it'll stay black because its a Super AMOLED HD screen.
Whites = use a lot of power on AMOLED screens whereas blacks use none.
Picture of front & back. It's a different picture than the one I posted yesterday. Looks a bit better.
Im quit perplexed about this so if someone with experience can explain

i posted this a lot before but i want to know, there is some grain visible in bright angles, and actually i have two of those white spots visible at angles, one of them is pixel size the other as you can see in the pic is quit few pixels size
but it doesn't show on black, very minimal on blue, shows on every other bright color
whats is itexactly, a dead pixel would be black and appear on white, a stuck pixel would be white and appear on black, dust would appear under sun light or flash light when the phone is turned off
but its not any of those, is this imperfection to the screen glue or dust in the glue or back light bleed?
The grain i assume is just glue imperfection but this white dot is driving me crazy it's mid screen and ruins the nice view angles of the One X, the screen is fit well actually
I tried pixel fixers but no luck, right now i'm trying to leave JScreenFix running for two hours
I have one of these, I think it's just a hot pixel. I emailed Clove and after seeing a photo of it, they said HTC won't replace for one bad pixel. Same thing as yours, only visible on white screens at odd angles, can't see it when looking at the phone straight on, and can't see it all on anything other than bright colours. Wish it wasn't there, but it's not a big deal to me, the rest of my phone is fine. Let me know if a pixel fixer works for you, haven't had luck so far. But I haven't noticed it lately.

a typical hot pixel should appear on all the time even dark background, anyway no luck with JScreen except that the device crossed 55degree lol
Got the same issue. Send it for repair today, it bugs the hell out of me. If they wont replace my screen for i'm gonna ask a refund.
I just noticed that I have one as well. Not sure what to make of it really, could be a lot worse but its pretty peculiar. Anyone managed to shed some light as to what it is or been able to remove it? Or if HTC will repair it?
I have one in the middle of my transformer prime, irritating but prob the least annoying type of screen deffect. Only noticeable on white backgrounds
white spots while charging in off mode
I m facing some strange issue in my canvad hd...i seen some white dots on screen during charging in off mode..when cell is not on...the charging image shows..in just above i seen white dots...i thought it dead pixel...but when i on my cell ..this dots gone...no dots there...only in off mode charging...they shows..what is this..ny idea...

as you see in the previous picture
in the upper part of the screen there is a less than 1 cm bar thick, which is much whiter than the rest of the screen and there is a smile face and clip icon on the right of that bar
its identical to whatsapp chat bar
the problem is that this bar is like a back light on the screen its showing in the screen where ever you are at and its so clear to see on a white or gray back grounds its even noticeable on CWM , its so annoying and defecting the beautiful screen of my note 2. :crying:
cant seem to understand how or why that happened
could it be that my screen is a defected unit ?? cuz my brother's note 2 is just fine
right now i dont know what to do i asked a mobile's repair shop for new screen and he said it will cost me 300$ (its half price of a new device)
here is more pix
*note : it may be no so clear to see on those pictures but in real its so clear and ugly
I have heard issue of Screen burn

so the only solution is to replace the screen with new one right ???
and do u think that the one year guarantee that came with the device should cover this ??
thanks all for helping
i make up my mind
the screen is so annoying cant live with it and even the colors tune is less brighter than it was and more yellow-ish i started to hate the phone cuz of the screen
and the new screen will cost me 300$ and its too much its almost a price of a new mid range android device
i decided to sell it and buy HTC one but not so sure
i will think about it and do some researches on the HTC one and see if it is good enough
damn you samsung you always disappoint me with your super amoled problems
I just picked up a 2013 Nexus 7 this weekend as an upgrade for my 2012 model. Seems like a solid upgrade so far but I'm bothered by one item and it's the yellowish gradient toward the bottom one or two inches of the screen. I need to tilt the device maybe 15 degrees away from me to get a more consistent color. If I rotate the device 90 degrees counter-clockwise (camera now on the left), I can still see the yellowish darkening on light screens on the right. My 2012 model has consistent color throughout. I found a number of posts regarding people complaining of about a warmer color to the 2013 screen but haven't seen anything describing the gradient I see. It's rather annoying when reading webpages or ebooks with a light background.
Anyone else see this on their Nexus? Did it improve with time?
I tried to take a couple of photos but my camera doesn't seem to be doing a good job of picking up the colors.
Common issue
I returned mine (because of it) and got a new one which had exactly the same thing.
I also checked out a friend's N7 and had the same thing.
So I guess it is a normal thing. It is hardly noticeable and only on white background.
(Most panels have some kind of uniformity issues. I checked an iPad 3 and had some other issues...)

Thanks for the feedback. This is actually driving me nuts and I'm going to take it back to see if I can get one with at least less of the effect. Mine seems to be worse than the display model in the store I saw today. If they can't give me something that's equivalent in color consistency to my 2012 Nexus 7 then I'll return it and just stick with that.
If I were you I wouldn't bother.
In the store there are other ambient factors that may trick you in believing the store's sample is batter. But it will not.
3 samples I checked are exactly the same...
My device have yellow tint to. How to fix? "Screen adjuster" and other not helped for me.

I don't believe that this is correctable with software. I ended up getting a different tablet altogether and even this 10" one has the same issue. Guessing these panels are all coming from the same manufacturer....
