What could cause Android OS to consume so much battery? - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This was after a day of using the phone for my normal usage I've used it from 7 am to 9:04 pm can anyone help me with this?
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk

THIS. I was about to post the same question here in XDA. I have some screenshots attached if they can help you guys see the "extent" of the problem.

I would upload a image but XDA won't let me till I have 10 posts or something but my phone is displaying the same thing basically

I didn't run a full-scale test, but 30 minutes of screen-on with only ~3% battery drain..... was superior to what I get right now, with all of my apps installed. If somebody else can test this I would be grateful.

Probably related to location tracking and Google now unfortunately.

It's the location tracking and Google cards and always scan for WiFi. I'm a delivery driver and phone was never going to sleep it was always tracking me. I don't use any of that anyway

I don't use Locations (but just about every other software feature is enabled) and I'm seeing great battery life. 3+ hours SoT is the lowest I get and that's on terrible signal mobile data, and 6 hours SoT on mostly WiFi usage. I will do a test with Locations enabled (with location based GNow cards) and see how much difference it makes.

[Q] incredibly fast battery drain on xperia arc s.

Hi everyone. I've bought my new xperia arc s on Wednesday and unfortunately I'm very disappointed with the battery performance. It is worse than my 3 years old iPhone. I've read many advices in the internet concerning this issue, but none of them gave any improvement for me. I want to emphasize, that I switched off: wifi, auto-sync, GPS & wifi localization etc. My display is at 30% of brightness. The only functions which are turned on are: 3g network and background data.
However, my smartphone needs to be charged after around 10 hours of not very heavy using (web browsing, ca. 20 minutes playing games such as angry birds or cut the ropÄ™ and 20 minutes of listening music player.
Today's performance was just tragic: 5 hours of working (less than 3.5 hours of the turned on screen; only 3g connection on). What should I do to improve these results or maybe the battery is broken and I should send the phone to the warranty service?
Thanks for help

Of course I'll wait, cause I don't want to miss my phone, which looks and works amazingly great. But do you have any tips which would help me to increase battery performance? All I need is 3g or wifi constantly turned on for google talk and facebook messenger.

Are you kidding me? It cannot be that bad.
My phone isn't arc s it's only arc but my battery lasts over 24 hours.
I run wifi and 3g always, usually there's over 1h of calls some web surfing and stuff. With this kinda usage it normallly last something like 36h. If i don't use phone it's over 48h.
You should check what has been using the battery.

I don't know how it's possible. I have only 3g data transfer turned on, while everything else is turned off. I checked in settings and it is screen which consumes 60%-70% of energy in my case. Is it normal? Moreover, could you tell me what is your maximum time of the screen turned on achieved without loading the battery?

Not kidding. Usually if i dont touch the phone, just the normal stuff that use the battery (display, idle etc.)
I use an app called my battery drain analyzer and it shows even when in idle the battery lose about 7%-8% in an hour.

Ill give u few suggestions
Turn the screen brightness to 30 40 % this will give you 4 5 hours more of stand by
Turn off 3g(data internet) it eats as much battery as the screen, use when u need it 4 6h more on stand by
GPS turn it off lol u dont need it to be turned on all the time, use it just when u need it
Im using this setup for 2 months not and its awesome im on 54% battery and the phone is charged before 21h.. i will have 30 + for sure

Hi, just some suggestions.
1. Do you use latitude?? That puts a huge dent in your battery.
2. Do you travel around during the day?? I find that my battery drops a lot quicker when the phone is forced to switch between towers a lot.
3. Try and check the date of manufacture on your battery, It may be old.
4. Did you properly condition your battery when you first got the phone (Takes about a week to do it right but well worth it in the long run)
5. See if you can borrow some one else's battery for a couple of days and see if it makes a difference?? (Isolation testing its called)
Or you could just have a bad battery, that happens.

I'm not sure how much my screen uses battery. I haven't evaluated screen always on usage.
I'm running currently at 46% 23h 3m 54s
voice calls 38% (1h 5m 20s)
wifi 19% (23h 3m 54s)
cell standby 14% (23h 3m 54s)
phone idle 12% (21h 45m 47s)
display 11% (47m 32s)
after these come other less significant stuff like Android OS, Android System, Web browser etc.
In my use are: DoomKernel v20 undervolted -75mv and Juice Defender.
I have also removed many softwares that are useless for me like support.apk etc.

It must be bad battery. If no apps are draining your batt.
read this thread get the betterbattery stats and check it

it will identify it down to a specific app or a module in the kernel, where the drain is coming from.

Man, this is a problem that occours in every android phone, even those ones which have a more powerful battery.
I use an Arc S overclocked (but not too much) and the battery lifes varies a lot, depending on which kernel and which rom I use. The best battery life i've find so far was DoomKernel ICS v4 with Arconium ICS v5. But it was a little bit laggy and now I'm using KA13 with the same kernel. The battery life is not bad, but not really good.
Sony knows this issue and I'm sure they're working in order to fix this on the official release of ICS. Just wait

changing kernels usually helps

One hour on regular battery

I must be doing either something really wrong or else...
My battery last me a little over one hour on standard battery (original rom+root) and that's me even using lean kernel. I've seen on forum some people were able to get as much as four hours of their screen why is it with my phone I'm only about to do so little?
What's the best so to see what's going on with my phone, who eats my battery, which apps are doing something that they shouldn't.
It really is killing me, I want to be able to enjoy my phone longer.

Why is my battery "done" ? I blame Sandy as before that it was fine, I'd easily do close to 2h of Screen time (at least 1h30m), now after Sandy due to reception that I'm getting right now I think that's why I'm getting so little now..

it's not like Sandy moved in or anything... Sandy is already gone and people (including me) heavily rely on their phones to communicate with others and so am I, so I need my phone more then I did before and if it's dying half way through the day that's a problem for me.

Your awake / screen on ratio looks pretty nutty to me. Basically your phone was awake for 4 hours, and your screen was on for 1 hour. Titaniumbackup kept your phone awake for 38 minutes; why is that?
Sign out of any google services you don't use like Google Talk and / or Google+.
Turn off location services and only turn it on when you need to. It's easy to toggle this by placing a Location services shortcut on your homescreen. This, for me, has had the largest impact on my idle battery usage. With location on, batt would drain around 2 to 3% per hour. Now it takes 3 hours idle to take the battery down 2%.

I think Titanium Backup was doing backup and then uploading it to Dropbox (happens once or twice a week at night)
Google Talk and/or Google+ is closed (and even cleared from recent task upon completion of using them)

[Q] What is the typical battery life on a stock/unrooted One?

First off, I would like to say that I have searched several times for this answer to no avail.
I just came from a Maxx HD (XT926) which obviously had phenomenal battery life. So I'm not terribly surprised by the reduced battery life moving to the One. However, I'm currently only getting about 8 hours off of the charger with 2.5 hours screen time. Via GSam, there do not appear to be any terrible wake locks or rampant apps running in the background. I typically observe a wake time of +/- 10 minutes from my screen on time.
My typical usage right now is some heavy texting, light Facebook browsing, a GroupMe thread, and that's about it.
System settings are generally screen brightness on one bar (from the notification pull down, not sure what the actual percentage is), wifi/bluetooth/gps OFF, NFC and mobile data on all the time.
I have disabled the location via wifi options, so that's not currently a factor either.
What is the typical off charger and screen time for you folks? I love the phone, but a bit frustrated with the ~10% per hour battery drain at idle...
Thanks in advance for any input!
unrooted this seems to be the norm. there's a slew of VZW bloat apps that will check to see if you are using them once an a while, also blink feed refreshing often will have this impact.
right now on rooted Ecliptic rom i can get about 12 hours up time with 3.5 hours screen and still have 45% battery left. This is mainly on 4g some WiFi. this a 4.4 rom and has the options to turn things off the stock system cant like blinkfeed.
-wait till the offical comes out ( rummored to be at the end of this month) it should help-

Thanks, Synisterwolf.
That definitely helps put to bed some of the concerns I was having.
I'm definitely not opposed to rooting, but if I remember correctly, build 2.10.605.1 doesn't yet have an exploit, correct?
Again, thanks for the input.
That seems low to me, even for stock. Granted I debloated even when I was running stock, since I was rooted. I was getting closer to 3.75 hours of screen time for that amount of time off charger. But like I said, I was debloated.
Edit: I also don't use NFC, so that was off too. Not sure how much NFC affects the battery, as I've never really used it on any phone I've had.

@ op no exploit as of yet. but on 4.4 you can go settngs > apps > all apps and click the ones you want to disable. its almost like uninstalling them for the non rooted devices.

You can range between 8 and 16 unrooted stock. Depends on the use age and what you use. I do know with viper ROM and elemental x kernel its has superior deep sleep and hardly uses the battery at all. To give you an example of stock and other ROMs/ kernels I use to get about 14 while at work and finish with about 14% battery life at the end of my 12 hr shift. With my current setup I can go the 14 hr run and have between 75 to 65 percent battery life left and this is with sync active for mail Facebook and so on. So that's just an example of stock vs rooted.

With moderate use I drain about 40-50% of the battery throughout a 15 hour day. I'm running a battery saving script though which disables 2 minutes after screen off for cellular and 7 for wifi with interval updates. I also disabled a bunch of permissions for apps that I know I'll never need but for apps I frequent. On average I use my GPS for about 20-30 minutes of the day playing Ingress.
If I'm at work I only lose about 35% battery throughout the entire day. I only send/receive a total of about 100 text a day, and don't game other than Ingress. Very light Facebook use, browsing, and such.
Unrooted/Stock
Those usage times are pretty good for stock. I would be happy with anything over 12 hours right now.
I did notice bit better battery life after freezing/disabling some of the stock bloatware, but now I'm trying out an old fallback: JuiceDefender.
So far, it seems to be helping substantially (although it obviously only helps during idle times as it shuts off mobile data until the screen is on/unlocked), but I'll wait until I've had a full cycle before passing any final judgement.

I would try just that and see if it helps. It just monitors your usage for the first 48 hours so if you are running other battery savers it might not work as well.

I'm totally stock and I regularly get 30 or more hours of battery. And I don't just keep my phone on the desk all day. I get 3.5-4 hours screen on time. 10% drain when not using your phone seems like an awful lot.
I have everything off that I don't need or use. That's pretty much it. I'm also on WiFi pretty much all the time too at home and at work. Don't know if that has anything to do with it
Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Tapatalk
Yeah, WiFi doesn't kill the battery nearly as much as the CDMA/LTE radio does. Unfortunately, I have both poor signal, AND lack of WiFi at work. Haha. Oh well.

So question, where are you finding these screen on numbers? I looked under battery and the usage part shows apps but not screen on. The graph shows when the screen is on at what point during the day but no durations are given.

Battery Stats after One day

So the battery life is looking not bad at all BeginnersTech on twitter tweeted these pics.
My Nexus 5 gets 1 hour of SOT extra, and the applications on the stats looks like they haven't been used for very long..
BUT, "Android System" is on top, meaning that maybe it was doing updates to google services and whatnot.

Your nexus 5 can make 7h SOT? That's plain bull**** (unless you keep it on a desk).
BTW second day by BeginnersTech on twitter with the s6 edge+, damn good if you ask me.

Check it out man, Reading and playing music, and some other minor activities.
I see people in the Note5 forums are getting great battery life so I'm expecting and hoping for the same. I could hit 6 hours SOT on the date occasion with my regular edge. (Although that was literally down to the 1% mark.)
Very nice
It seems there is a competition between the edge+ and the note 5 in battery.. both amazed me really..
I'll just leave this here.

That's impressive...

So I know it's just one day and a little bit into my second run but this completely blows away when I was getting from my Nexus 6. I was lucky to get close to 5 hours of on screen time. Very happy with this change.
Oh yeah. Attachment
Attach please find some screenshot, this is my 3rd day with device.

Day one, sorry to crash the party
Brightness on 100% and 4G all day (verizon)
Well with 100% brightness and data all day it is normal to get 3,5 hours.. I see that I am going to get 5,5 hours with WiFi usage and brightness set at around 60% but I am only on my first charge cycle..
Sent from my SM-G928C using Tapatalk
Using lux to maintain brightness helps a lot too. Going about 60%pointless

When you are in home and it is dark there is no point putting more than 60% or 70% since I think it is too bright. I am not talking Automatic option ticked here.. anyway this screen is amazing, if somebody wants to get like 7hours OST to show around here OK be my guest but real life is around 4-5 hours I believe (mixed wifi and data usage)
i get between 7 - 9 sot with my exynos note 4 if the note 5 can top this great but i doubt it
Another day of real world usage
Are you people that get 6 plus hours of SOT on mostly wifi? I just can't see getting that on the network, even with solid strength. The post above me seems more legit.

I've seen a pretty decent variance between wifi and 4g. So yeah I'm about 6 hours sot on wifi and closer to 4 on 4g depending on signal strength.
I've had this phone since Wednesday and since yesterday I've gotten some nice battery life. I'm on pace for 5+ hours of sot.

terrible battery!

the battery on my nexus 5x is very poor. battery saving apps do not help, neither does a custom kernel and using powersave mode, etc (that only made performance worse, no improved battery life). I'm always worried about my phone dying when out and about, even if i don't use it much (and sometimes i really need it!). any suggestions?

There's nothing that will dramatically increase the battery for you on this phone. If your achieve poor battery statistics with the stock rom, it's time to move on. Get a new phone.

have you tried anything like Force Doze? this should at least improve your standby time by a bit.

First things first. What do you consider poor battery life and what good battery life?
I noticed that my nexus's battery life got worse. I bought it 2 months ago, on chroma + franco kernel i was receiving about 5h SoT, currently on stock /N/ latest chroma + franco i get max 2,5h....
What to do guys? What may be the cause of it?

Just kidding. Maybe there's an app you installed causing massive wakelocks. Have you checked for that?

Disable Google and it's hot word, disable Google now. Install Greenify and greenify only Chrome and enabling auto hibernation, while using the donation pack and use Aggressive Doze feature, as well as the disable sensors while moving feature.
Disable Bluetooth and wireless scanning!
I got the same setup as you and I got from 2.5 hours SOT to 4:30+...

Why was your phone constantly awake while the screen was off? Wakelocks, my friend. ...Unless you listened to music for 14 hours straight.

You probably have "Wi-Fi scanning" activated in the scanning options within the location settings (in the three dot menu). I'm not sure if it actually has a big impact in battery life, but I usually disable it, because, as far as I know, as long as I enable Wi-Fi, it will still use it to improve location.

Yes I looked at it too, I downloaded when i caught WiFi connection wakelock detector, and here results:
Screen wakelock (camera, because double power to run, So thats not weird)
And cpu wakelocks
Music was only about 2-3 A.M, later about 3-4 hours, but thats not on battery usage, but on wakelock detector already is noticed
P.S WiFi scanning in 3dot menu i had turned off, but it still on battery usage is as on, but took not so much battery (13 mAh) so I would keep it away

i also had massive wakelocks, seems like apps like facebook and viber has wifi modes that override the phone ones.
for viber its in general settings of the app, while i have deleted pos facebook and use chrome notifications for it. if you use the non mobile site you can receive/reply just fine without messenger
We already have a very extensive battery life thread.

And the OP hasn't even contributed much info. Why is this thread still going?
