I've switched back and forth between Light to Dark Theme and can't see a difference. It's under Settings in Messaging. I've even restarted between modes just to make sure.
Anyone know if it's working?
anyone? Maybe it's not in effect.

I think the theme only applies to the pop up notification, not the message list in the app.
Ah yes now I see. Thats why it's under "Quick Reply"

Quick question, I have seen a couple of places how to remove the white frames from around the icons.
Should be Settings > Display > Icon frames.
However in my new T-Mobile Note 7, that option is greyed out. I can't click on it to change the settings.
Has anyone else seen this? I would love some assistance.
Thanks in advance!

I think this option only works if you don't have a custom theme applied. If you switch back to the default theme, the option should be available again.
I've noticed the same thing using default thene.

Maybe just download a frameless icon pack you like.
Having this problem too. Wonder if it's got to do with the system update that got applied on the first day?
Same possibly here. I'm on T-Mobile with default theme. I would like to remove the frame.
I have only been able to change this setting whike in easy mode (which i don't like). It is greyed out for me in standard mode as well.
Ok, I figured it out. I'm using Nova Launcher and Sammy doesn't like that. I changed to touch wiz for my launcher and suddenly Icon frames are available to change.
I changed back to Nova again afterwards, and the change stuck, so it seems to be a reasonable workaround.
Let me know if this works for you.
I don't have a custom launcher but I do have a theme. I deactivated the theme and it worked. I guess the theme locked the borders on. Sucks.
Yeah so I don't think it's launcher specific but rather theme based. Once you apply a theme it seems to lock in whatever the icon choice was. So I went back to default theme (which opened up the option again), changed to icon only, and then applied my theme again. Now it's locked again, but as icon only.
I have no theme and stock launcher and it is still greyed out. Switched to easy mode, made the change and went back and all is well now.

Has anyone had any luck removing the frames and using the Google Now Launcher? I can turn it off in TouchWiz and Easy Mode, but as soon as I switch back to Google Now Launcher they come back and the option to turn them off becomes I unavailable.
I might not mind these damned circles if it was consistent, but it only affects about half the app icons and the other half are normal. It's crazy to look at...
Yeah it seems like the only way to get them to stay TRULY off is to use touchwiz, using the standard them.
I know everyone is saying you can switch to off, then go back to what you were on - and it is "locked in off". I agree that it looks this way in the settings.
However the icons clearly have the frames around them still.
I have stuck with touchwiz for how smooth it is, but I think I am going to give up on it.
Also, the only reason why I say its smooth is because my initial setup was with "good lock" (needed to download an apk for that as it doesn't show up in store) and google now launcher and stuff - but there was a decent amount of choppiness and also the battery was not performing to my expectations. So I did a factory reset (which some people say fixes stuff like this) and sure enough, things got better. Battery better, smoothness better. However I have stuck with normal touchwiz since then... been afraid to change it since everything seems better now lol.
I hear you.
I had to try several different icon themes but i found one (that i like) that doesn't leave borders on the rest of the icons. I think it's some sort of default setting that goes unchanged when custom themes are created.
Trial and error. Good thing the Samsung theme store has a preview option. It reduces a lot of hassle.

Same here. I ended up going back to TouchWiz mostly because I couldn't stand the weird frames on some of the icons. It's not as good as the Google Now launcher, but it's good enough.
I've been searching for this answer for weeks, finally I found it, nearly started to think my device was faulty.
My option is unavailable and I have stock Rom and launcher.
But this option was available but not anymore. Can't understand why???
On October update, it's dark. Did not notice until nighttime so I don't know if it's tied to time. Can't find any settings for it.
Are you on beta? I don't see a dark theme and have the October update.

Not on any beta. Not even aware of a current beta.
Under settings, display, advanced I have dark theme selected. And I do have a solid black wallpaper.
I meant beta for Google app. Dark theme and black wallpaper still didn't do the trick.

Lol, as soon as I hit submit I realized that. Not on the app beta, but I do have a pretty new version from 9/27.
And correct me if I am wrong, but the layout looks new too. The topic of each card is centered now with the little stars. I remember it being part of the card and on the left.
Yeah does look like a new layout. I have the same version. Probably a server side update that got turned on for you.

That's it, good call. I feel special now, thanks Google!
There is a little slider on the right for more or less. Page two of assistant is all white.
I am happy to report it stays dark during the day.
I believe it was a google app update, not beta or anything like that.
Got it going as well.

It's part of the 9/27 update. It is then turned on server side. They do this somewhat often.

Can't find it. When you say Android settings, do you mean the gear icon when you pull down the notification bar? Maybe I don't have it yet, just want to make sure. Care to share a screenshot of the setting? Thx

OK, this must be an Android Pie only setting. I'm currently on Oreo. This might push me over to upgrading. Thx for the help
Hi folks,
I've just got one of these excellent phones and the first thing I did was upgrade to Pie.
All great so far, but the Dark Theme under the advanced Display settings doesn't seem to do anything.
Anyone else got this problem? Really don't like all the white backgrounds.
Thanks for any info.
Have you tried to set a dark wallpaper first and then choose the dark theme?
Can confirm it's not working the normal "Pie" way. You still have to use the "Oreo" way initially like slimshady76 said you need to trigger it by adding a dark home screen wallpaper and set the themes setting to auto. Once it's triggered you can change the theme settings to dark and switch back to your old wallpaper, dark theme will stay now. If you wonder how it should look like, check this out
Just to make this clear, it clearly should work without the trick in Pie as it does on Pixel phones. Probably a bug that comes from updating from Orea to Pie if I had to make a guess.

Not because of upgrading, because I flashed full ROM with MiFlash and the issues persist. The bug level of this device's "official stable" Rom is just wow.
What I meant was that the device was made with Oreo, thus every Pie version for the A2 lite is just an update. It would probably be working if it would be developed on Pie right away.
All I can say is that I didn't notice many bugs after updating directly from stock Oreo to the latest stable Pie. However earlier Pie versions seem to have been more unstable.
Thanks for the replies.
It does seem to work using the workaround for static wallpaper, but if you choose a live wallpaper it reverts but to white. Is this likely to get fixed in a future update?
Is there any way to get the 'settings' background dark?
Thanks again.

Not Yet, real dark mode (with everything being dark) will come with the next android update though.
check out the app swift installer. it can change your whole system and most apps to darkmode. working pretty good for me.
alternatively you can wait for Android 10 release to get system wide dark mode
Thanks for the Swift Installer suggestion, but was hoping to avoid rooting at this stage.
Guess I'll have to wait for Android 10.
It seems even the Pixel phones don't have a dark 'settings' background yet either.
I've found solution by accident. If you use Lawnchair launcher, you can set device theme in launcher settings, and it has more options (like dark, black, etc) while it still remains system wide. And best of all, you can use live wallpapers as well without it reverting to light theme.
hi;
i have something strange with my darkmode on mi A2 Lite (10.0.13.0, magisk/edXposed)
drawer, quick settings from notification bar, sound mode change, google app, dialer, chrome, agenda, all have dark mode
only settings menu and google now (on the left of main screen) have light theme
anyone here have the same problem? or even a solution?
thanks to helpers
Is there a way to change the 'Blue' colour default theme to other colour without installing any theme? Cos I want to maintain everything as default but only the colour changed.

Yes, you can do it with a theme from the samsung theme store or you can use substratum on an unrooted Note 20 Ultra. How to use substratum has checnged from the first post but toward the end of the thread are the new procedures.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/substratum/official-starting-substratum-andromeda-t3798316
Here's one example of substratum.
.....but, OP said he DID NOT want to install a theme and wanted to keep things DEFAULT

Substratum looks sweet. Gonna have to check that out.

Hex Installer allows you to keep the Samsung theme but change the UI element colors. You can even fine tune the background colors. No root needed and no wonky Substratum setup.

AFAIK there's no way without a theme or app...............................................................just giving the OP options!
The app is Hex installer.

By default it's already using a Samsung theme!
Changing the Samsung theme is reversible and causing no performance impact (except live wallpapers and such).
>Many themes* to chose from, I recommend one of high contrast themes.
>Choose the homescreen wallpaper you want.
>Then chose from one of the hundreds of free icon packs on the Glaxy Store.
*use themes to get the keyboard, phone dialer, messages theme etc that you like best. As per above the rest are interchangeable.
That's the trick and the fix. It's time consuming but works well.

It you want to stay on default you can use this at the bottom of developer options.

I just changed mine from "Default" to "Purple", just to make it really pronounced - could not find a single thing on the phone that had changed to "Purple"? I even rebooted just for laughs - still nothing, settings menus, it says "accent color" so I have no idea what that could even mean? I did spend about 30 minutes digging around the phone checking all kinds of stuff to make sure I didn't miss anything - finally put it back to "Default"!

Interesting
Samsung and/or the carrier may have disabled it.
Or it was an experimental beta feature.
Developer Options is fun... in Pie I have some that seem to do nothing that are indexed under "Feature Flags", an experimental feature.

What changes when you change the theme color? When does it change (after restart? Immediate?)?

This dev settings option is from stock Android and was originally the only way of changing accent colours on devices running stock before Google added its own theming option later. It has nothing to do with the way Samsung implements theming and accent colours in One Ui, and for that reason does not work on Samsung devices.
The only thing that the developer option did on my side, was to change the background colour of default system icons that got no icon.
Here are two examples : one black and the other cinnamon.
Why dont you try the following apps developed for Samsung and you found them in Galaxy store:
Good lock has a bunch of modules to create your unique theme
When you use Theme Park module to create a new them make sure you tap on the top right corner on the sun icon to choose the dark mode. Basically when you create a new them you can create one for light mode(sun icon) and another for dark mode(moon icon) in one package as one them.
If you dont like the quickpanel you can change the colour scheme on your like using Quick Star module
Keyboard you can make a new theme using Theme Park (Keyboard section) ,the possibilities are endless ,make sure again you tap on sun icon to select dark mode for keyboard ?
Then use Keys Cafe module, submenu "style your own keyboard " to add key/motion effect when typing
If you want to go even further, then you can create your very own keyboard ,customised the location of the keys and add functions to them
Check attachments and YouTube link of the theme keyboard
