Been doing some reading on official Google FAQ's but it doesn't mention Nexus 5X or 6P... so is Encryption mandatory for us? Or will I have to do a factory reset and opt out of encryption to remove the encryption?
or unless I root I will have to accept having to input a pin every time I reboot???
It's encrypted on first boot. Just go into your security settings.

So we can't disable the pin to start up feature?
I don't put a pin on start up but there is no way to decrypt it without a modded kernel and an erase.

Nexus 6 and 9 were the first two devices to have mandatory encryption. On the Nexus 6, the ONLY reason to disable the encryption, was because it is performed on CPU at a severe performance penalty. Nexus 9 had a minimal performance penalty caused by the fact that it isn't actually an ARMv8, but rather an EMULATED ARMv8. On a 5x/6p, there is NO REASON not to encrypt, your CPU can do the job of crypto with no significant performance impact.
Tidbits: the kernel is NOT modified to disable crypto. The fstab is modified. The fstab is used by the init (which is the first executable program that the kernel starts up after loading) to decide what filesystems to mount where, and with what parameters.

It comes encrypted with a hidden PIN. You don't need to set up a PIN if you don't want to, though you must if you want to use the fingerprint sensor.

Why not? Whenever app doesn't use HWND APIs, it will run. If it does, it just won't show HWND.
Absent functions is still a problem for some (if not most) of apps.

There is explorer.exe (started usually by HKLM/Init/Launch50, it is replaced by simply TellShell.exe TaskBar started by HKLM/Init/Launch40) and some shell missing on WP7 relative to full WEC7, especially screen UI functions and parameters. There are possibilities to include missing APIs by using Platform Builder sources, but it is too much work for deprecated system, because all necessary changes will related to big amout of dependent places. The same answer is to USB Host/OTG/HID support etc. All is possible, but too few experienced native coders is available. May be simple debugging API using application can start most of WCE/WEC applications with simplified UI. There is security hole posssible due to different data and shared code segments between kernel and user mode (callbacks are valid with marshalled parameters), which offers to us all processes memory and code controlling access too. The most simpliest way is to add visual page creating and registering to original WM/WCE/WEC source code, which cause application main window visibility, but it could not solve problem of any missing needed API functions and parameters (scrollbars, start menu, low level support etc.).
Stock ROM. Two bugs.
In legacy SMS app, I have set a message. Any time I exit a conversation with back button, app says it saved a draft. Need to exit by doing menu-discard. I had this bug also in the stock rom for my previous phone, HTC Sensation, 3 or 4 years ago (android 2) (fixed after changing rom). I am surprised this bug comes back after so long. Is there a fix ? When loading the draft again, it adds the signature a second time, then a third ...
Many apps and widgets show voltage of battery to be 3 or 4 mV. Few app give the correct value. After digging, the value in /sys is good (forgot the full path file name). An advanced app shows the correct value internally, and gives a button to access the android internal hidden menu of battery, and in there, the value is wrong. So, it looks like it's an android bug, and all apps which get it wrong are those asking kindly the value to Android (instead of going directly in /sys). Is there a fix ?
Ah, found the file:
Code:
cat /sys/devices/platform/htc_battery/power_supply/battery/batt_vol_now
4193
The following shots are from Android Tuner Free: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ccc71.at.free
3rd image says: you are going to reach a feature hidden by the manufacturer ... that could damage your phone. Use it at your own risks. => to me it's going to an internal android menu. A stock one.

I'm a secure folder heavy user. I got a few apps duplicated with my dual sim phone, that way I keep things separate, work and personal. How to get this on another phone?
I don't want to give up my Note 7!
I'd like the know the same thing. As a first time Samsung owner, that feature was very nice for a number of reasons. Any third party options to add this type of functionality to another phone?
Problem with secure folder is that you can't copy stuff back out of it!

I didn't have any problems doing that on mine.

Maybe it changed in the last update, but when I tried it,I put a video in there and wasn't able to copy it back out (when I found the Occulus player didn't support opening from secure folders- bummer). A quick bit of research at that point suggested this was the intention of secure folder to not allow security compromise of copying back out of it? Perhaps you can "un"secure it?
Edit: ok just tried again, and if you go into gallery inside the secure folder, there is an option to move out, yay. Didn't spot this option previously.

When I make or answer a call and put my phone up to my ear the proximity sensor kicks in and the screen shuts off. However, when I take the phone away from my ear the screen doesn't turn on again. Sometimes(maybe 25% of the time) I can press the power button to wake up the screen but usually the screen is just stuck off until the call is ended. I don't even have a screen protector that might be getting in the way.
Anyone else having this issue?
Android 7.1.1 (Build N4F26I)
Haven't had this issue and I used stock for a while, the same build as you are on.. What were you on before? Did you use any scripts or kernel tweaking apps that may have left something on your SD card? I'd look using root explorer or another file manager and delete anything you see in that folder etc/init.d and reboot. (Screenshot attached) If you have nothing in there and don't have any scripts active or kernel apps controlling your screen off I guess it could be faulty hardware. (Power buttons always are jacked up on Nexus devices. I have to hit mine a few times to get it to work...) Maybe try a factory reset if nothing above applies or works that's what I would do. Copy all your stuff to your laptop or a cloud and wipe that baby in twrp. Format data then go to security settings and encrypt again if that's what you want..
Edit
If none of that works I'd contact Google and ask for a replacement.

Got the same issue on PN6, it was the elementalx 2tap to wake feature that's was problematic

So I've been using the a neat feature on the 5T to disable network access on apps that chew up my data plan (specifically Spotify). I have a premium Spotify account and all my music is stored offline... Spotify doesn't need to waste my data to populate album art and lyrics.
This doesn't really play well when Spotify needs to check in with the mother ship on first start after a reboot.
Long story short, I'm trying to figure out a way I can invoke this option with either Tasker or a shell prompt. I've found that disabling background data modifies /data/system/netpolicy.xml. I'm just not sure if the setting is cached elsewhere and this file is used after boot.
I've also seen that I can disable ALL network access with the 'svc network enable/disable'... But this isn't quite what I'm looking for.

Have you tried data sever option? It can turn off background data for apps.

As seen in the attached screenshot above, I can do exactly as I need manually by toggling the 'Disabled DataUsage' option. I'm looking for a way to toggle this from either an intent action or shell command so I can essentially automate this with Tasker.
Basically, I will set up a script like this:
Open Spotify
->Tasker script starts
Enable cell data for Spotify
Wait 60 seconds
Disable cell data for Spotify
This leaves WiFi unaffected and won't waste my data plan.
