Google Project Butter accomplished its “buttery smooth” responsiveness and “speed infusion” improvements via three main additions: triple buffering, which improves coordination and animation synchronization between the CPU, GPU and display; VSync, which improves graphical performance and increases frame rates to 60fps (frames per second); and touch responsiveness, which predicts a user’s upcoming actions of the screen in order to improve load times for those actions.new technology Project Butter, aimed at making the entire UI fast, fluid and enjoyable — one of the complaints against Android was that the interface is sometimes slow even on powerful machines. The technology includes triple buffering the graphics pipeline in order to ensure the absence of jumps in the frame rate in the animation interface, as well as technology enabled vertical sync.

The only thing you 'made' is catch the zip and put an apk inside there and now there is a new rom?

I tried already, but it turns out worse than the original short I could not get who can give the necessary files here. Although so good to me personally.

12. Using the work of others.
If you are developing something that is based on the work of another Member, you MUST first seek their permission and you must give credit to the member whose work you used. If a dispute occurs about who developed / created a piece of work, first try to settle the matter by private message and NOT in open forum. If this fails, you may then contact a Moderator and provide clear evidence that the work was created by you.
Convincing evidence will result in the copied work being removed. If there is no clear evidence that it was you who created the work, then in the spirit of sharing, all work will remain posted on the forums.
As an addition, developers have the right to hold exclusivity over their work for as long as it is deemed necessary by that developer. However, if the work is claimed as exclusive, it must remain as such. No selective sharing will be allowed (ie, allowing certain people to use it and not others). If the developer decides to start sharing the work with others, the work automatically becomes available for all to use, albeit with the relevant credit displayed.
When permission has already been given, unless there is a very valid reason, it cannot be revoked (same applies to major updates on the work). Under that same premise, permissions cannot be denied unless the work is exclusive or under extreme circumstances.
In plain English: If you want to keep your work exclusive, go for it. However, if you are going to share your work, do it fairly.
Reposted content, derivative or maintaned works based on that of former or banned members may be removed at our discretion.
These rules apply to all software posted on XDA (including but not limited to ROMs, RUUs, apps, games, kernels, themes, icons, etc) unless that software comes with a license that waives these rules.

FroydVillain 1.3.x/2.x Roadmap

FroydVillain 1.3/2.x roadmap
EDIT: Due to unforeseen issues rapidly accelerating the release of 1.3 (more framework changes), I'll edit this roadmap to reflect 1.4 as well as what we hope to accomplish depending on how many of the 1.3 promised features make it into the accelerated release. Thanks for your patience.
Now that FroydVillain 1.2.x is somewhat stable we can concentrate on the next releases.
First, any and all "WHENNNNNNNNNNN???????!!!!!111oneeleven" posts will be ignored. As usual, "when" = "when it's done".
Features/items in this roadmap are things you can definitely look forward to unless otherwise stated, ie, something happens that renders that feature impossible. Like an asteroid hitting my house, for example.
First, the preliminary work.
I promised the guys over at Cyanogenmod that my new build profile for the Hero (and other MSM7xxA based phones, so the Dream, Slide, G1, etc etc) will be tidied up and offered up in a pull request. I will be cleaning up my tree and submitting my changes before I begin work on the next release of FroydVillain. The main reason for this being, the closer the CM tree is to my tree, the less work involved in keeping the FroydVillain tree up to date with upstream fixes.
Right, so the changes.
Version 1.3.x:
Obviously it is customary to break some **** with each major revision just to give me an excuse to release another release after that broken release.
So for 1.3.0 I nominate, umm...nah I'll let you find out. A release post isn't complete without at least 20 posts asking if anyone is having xxxxx problem and a further 20 posts complaining about the said problem after I post that we're aware and we're very sorry and those responsible shall be flogged.
FroydVillain 1.3.x:
Further changes to the build base and source code to move Froyo-on-Hero further away from reliance upon Eclair libraries. We aim to be building a native libcamera.so in the same vein as the D/S guys are. This combined with already eliminating proprietary liblights makes it easier to...
Switch over to the Froyo prelink map. If you don't know what prelinking is, don't ask. Either don't worry about it or do some Googling. The upshot for you the end user should be better stability and maybe even some added performance improvements.
Along with the addition of the CPU profile to the CM base I'm hoping to get VFP support fixed in the kernel and in the dalvik source. VFP is your phone's ability to offload number crunching to a dedicated number crunch piece of hardware. The cpu the Hero has supports it, however support for VFP on ArmV6 architecture is a bit...well, pants. Accomplishing this should also give another measurable boost in dalvik performance since currently the only enhancement to dalvik, is the optimised binary, the source itself still trudges along with only armv5te support which again rather pants.
Giant /data partition. Thanks Maxisma and co. I'm not going to bring this in until we next need to do a wipe, ie, 1.3 since it resizes the mtd partitions. Coupled with old school apps2sd there should never be a single whine about space on /data ever again. Even dkelley could fit all of his dalvik cache data on it with his encyclopaedic collection of apps. Be aware this will be accompanied by an updated recovery.img so the different layout is supported. You have been warned.
Debugged Exchange support. I can't promise that this will appear in a 1.2.x update but I will get it in for 1.3. I don't use Exchange and so have to rely on others to help find the cause of the issue, debug it and test it. I can't believe after nearly 10 years dodging it, I'm back troubleshooting Exchange bollocks again.
Theme revival. Because Google were kind enough to provide no theming engine what so f**king ever (cheers lads) theming is a pain in the behind that involves hacking the framework. However because we now build from source rather than trying to crowbar bits in and out of a prebuilt HTC tree, it's significantly easier to produce themes from the newly built source tree. I'm working with Alex24 on a project to go with 1.3.x which will put Themes back into the OTA app and they'll be available at the same time as the new releases are. This also allows us to easily add more themes over time.
CMSettings/CMParts. After having a chat with the folks at Cyanogenmod they're more than happy for me to make the menu entry in settings feel more at home within FroydVillain instead of looking like a kicking and screaming rip off from the Cyanogenmod ROM itself. So those of you that have been hopping up and down for CMSettings functionality, it's coming.
Better GPS functionality/better radio functionality overall. For various reasons, changes made by Google, the fact we'll never have official "Froyo supporting" radios, bugs creep into the OS when it comes to using newer Google based apps that make use of the radio. We'll have some fixes for the slow GPS locking and the random reboot/crash when looking for a GPS signal. We're hoping we have mobile data+gps properly nailed down as well.
We're also going to look into different Gallery implementations. Gallery 3D is annoying as hell and the bugs with it are likely due to us relying on the Eclair GL libs. So no further ground is likely to be made until/if/when another MSM7xxA class phone gets Froyo which if any will likely be the Legend. That's a big if though. Imagine if you will, 50 metre tall letters I and F, draped in neon coating with a flashing, strobing sign above them announcing "THIS IS A BIG IF." But no whining if the best you get is the old 2D Gallery as I'm really struggling to find any decent Gallery implementation. Which is somewhat surprising. Perhaps we should offer a bounty for a new decent one.
Add further language support
That's all for 1.3.x for now I think. I'll update this as new things occur or as things appear to be impossible.
FroydVillain 2.x:
Kernel 2.6.34.
What? That's not enough? Wtf is wrong with you? Ok fine.
2.6.34 will provide official support for the newer Froyd features such as in built Tethering and no more annoying bull**** surrounding connecting a simple USB phone to a simple USB port on a simple Windows system. Apparently the Windows driver stack is easier to confuse than a 90 year old Alzheimers suffering dementia patient.
We'll also be looking to bring the Hero Froyo platform closer in line to the more complete Cyanogenmod D/S platform. There's really no reason why we shouldn't be able to especially once 2.6.34 is available since as far as the hardware is concerned the phones are practically identical.
More will be added to the 2.x branch as we discover it. Don't be surprised if in the course of working on 1.3.x some features get pushed back to the 2.x release due to practical limitations or it just making more sense.
Now is the time for feature requests from you the user. 1.2.x is now critical bugs only, I do not want to have to make you wipe/flash 1.2.x now until 1.3 hits so any fixes involving a framework rebuild won't appear until 2.x. 1.2.x is now considered feature complete in the scope of features we want to have supported. New features will appear in 1.3.x or 2.x depending on the work required to make them appear.
So the forum is now yours, dear users, to get those feature requests in. We'll endeavour to get as many implemented as we can. Any ridiculous or unobtainable goals will be identified as such as quickly as possible so people don't get their hopes up only for me to dash them like an abusive husband.
Thanks for all of the Froyo deliciousness you've provided us with! I myself will be waiting with baited breath for the next installments of Froyd.
p.s.
If you need more people with access to Exchange, or if you'd like an Exchange environment to play around with, let me know. I've got an Exchange 2010 machine sitting next to me.
Looking great! Hope you'll get that all working!

Best we can do is see if we can hack over the Flash Lite stuff from Sense, but don't hold your breath.
In fact, you all should start a campaign and hammer the **** out of Adobe to provide an armv5te or armv6j version of the flash library. It's their fault, make them fix it.

I'd appreciate it if you would make an optional patch for people who want their phone unlocked by double clicking menu button.

As for Feature Requests, +1 for a quick 2D Gallery
Nice post ninpo.
Thanks for your great ROM. I'd love to see better rtl language support in your ROM.
Really lame request, and probably easily fixed just by finding the pictures myself, but could you put all the nice wallpapers you had back into the releases?
It's obviously a very trivial request, but the wallpapers were always exceptional compared to my attempts of being sophisticated. I always ended up with either breasts or something Xbox related...

Woah, that's a lot of things to do, and some big ones too. Good luck on that, would be awesome to see these things done in the next months, though, take your time, no rush .
As for Feature-Requests: I only have one, and I don't have any idea if it's already done (I don't test many ROMs that often, I'll prefer to stay on my 2.1 Vanilla ROM ) or if it's even possible, so sorry for my Noobishness in advance. Now, I would love to be able to control the Music Player with the volume keys. Short presses change the volume, like before, and long presses skip the songs.

We'll be putting a modified CMSettings back into FroydVillain in 1.3, so these features will be there automaticallymagically.
Yeah, it's a fair bit of work, but with HTC pretty much ditching the Hero we can take the project and make sure it's all done and done right.
There's collaboration with other developers on other projects for a lot of this, it's not just me or Team Villain making it all happen. I'll be pushing the fixed cpuprofile up to cyanogenmod and they can then work on it too, I'm working with Elemag on the 2.6.34 port, Maxisma brought the repartitioning stuff to everyone's attention for the Hero, etc. Proper open source development at its best.
It's well worth it too. Look how different the Hero runs with FroydVillain 1.2.1, I'm quite frankly disgusted that HTC never, ever, tapped all that potential.
I can't believe it, my hero will never die!
This is indeed great news and I can't wait!
I just wanna thank everyone involved, all the developers are doing a fantastic job bringing us things i never thought was possible on the hero, and I totally agree Hacre, it's a real shame that HTC ditched ther hero when there's still juice left in it!
Cheers!

KERNEL
Some things that I contributed directly to this kernel were suggestions about voltages, tips on recovery, showed changed the bootclass path (to make it an ICS kernel. From original ics boot spilt thread, but modded to build from source, as ours doesn't split) some other small things, alot of random work(as it is based off BOCA kernel - we used to share sources) and I ported/patched the following: SIO, VR NOOP, INTERACTIVEX, SAVEDZEN, GREASEDLIGHTNING, DARKSIDE, ONDEMANDX, SCARY, SMARTASSV2, SUPERBAD. Maybe a bit more, but nothing else comes to mind, directly.
Therefore I feel that I have contributed enough to include this kernel in my release.
If you notice, I didnt "spiff" the recovery up to its usual vibrant self this time.
Maybe next time, if users liked it in BOCA RC1.
ROM
This creation was ported and built by me.
I did get various ideas and configurations from developers around the web. And shared oh-so-many ideas also.
PLEASE DO NOT DISTRIBUTE BOCA IN WHOLE OR PART. NOR RE-UPLOAD
TREBUCHET
This version of the launcher uses hardware accel.
In can also upload a version that uses cpu /software accel.
Let me know.
Feel free to distribute the link (when uploaded) Its cyanogens product, but VERY heavily modded by me. Others on different devices (if it'll install) may appreciate it. Just kindly give me credit.

Original device branding (sgh-t849, P1000L ect)
ROM you came from
BE HONEST in the steps you took to get here
If possible, include a link to patsebin, where you have uploaded your LOGCAT of the error
The more info the better
-IF YOU CAN NOT DO THESE SIMPLE THINGS, IT WILL BE DIFFICULT TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM-
As a user, you are very important to me, as is my quality of work and enjoyment of such work.
But if you cant be bothered to offer up some very simple info, Then I can hardly be bothered to beg you for it, just to help you.
*The red boarder still persists, infequently
*THERE IS NO HARDWARE ACCEL!!
*NOT EVERYTHING WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a DEVELOPMENT site, not a polished product site. DONT COMPLAIN!! Be helpful instead!
*We (all sgt7 cm9 ports) use the wrong graphics driver and graphics resolution. (its all thats available) So some video may not react up to your standards.
*This is a WORK IN PROGRESS!!!!!
I am a ONE PERSON development team.
I do this all in my free time, for the pure joy of it. Dont kill my joy by being a "GIMMIE-GIMMIE" or a Complainer
I (and every single developer here) am nice enough to share our work with you, be gratefull.
Or build it yourself.
*Doing things like porting and building a source code (especially an unfinished VERY alpha one) IS VERY TIME CONSUMING.
Each new build takes two full days to compile. Ive learned how to wait.
Total time ive spent doing this, added up probely equals over 700,000 hours. Again, for the joy of it.
So be patient on updates, or mistakes. There is never, ever an ETA. Dont ask.
About the download link
Its 4shared ;(
My server went down last night.
After I complete repairs, All my work will be uploaded to it.
Hi diz, just to let you know the image at the top is not clickable, and can only be viewed when users are logged in. Also there is a version of the image with (CM9) added to it in the boca rc1 post, you might want to copy these to your hosting and link them from there.
Gonna give this rom a try NOW!! thanks again for all your hard work.

hey diz, top work on releasing a new version of icedBOCA, looks like you put a lot of work into it
ive been kinda quiet for the last week (got a new computer from work which ive turned into a media centre and it was a pain to get the old clunker of a video card working in it)
i know what you meant in your other thread by the other one taking off the way it has, i was gonna try to manually add all their added stuff to your AOSEP version just to see how it went, but it wouldve taken forever just to get it to where they have, and keeping up with the updates would be hard (although i still want to do it just to learn more).
anyway, i thought id thank you yet again for your AOSEP idea and all behind it, even though i started fiddling before you had the idea, it pushed me to take it further.
with that, id thought id offer up one piece of information i learnt from another thread that fixes the red borders completely, on top of:
Code:
persist.sys.strictmode.visual=0
the other line that ive found that removes it completely is:
Code:
ro.build.type=user
so if the build type is set to user it seems to get rid of the red borders completely. hope this helps in some way and best of luck in the future.
just when i'm gonna download this ROM i found out that phone is broken, too bad >.<
gonna taste it when it fixed. great job diz!
Thank you mate! Like allways a great job!
Just experienced a small bug.
When rom installs I got allways a FC of a chineese aplication.
Thanks again, performance is very good.
Changing default keyboard and laguage to English in settings (Language & input) helped stop this for me. No need to freeze the launcher.

I`m using battery monitor widget for monitoring
all my video players seem to work better than in cm9 build
the browser is very slow to render and load, cm9 is way better
but 3g is more than 1.5 times faster
other glithches
the mentioned red border, scrolling stutters sometimes, application names in all application screen sometimes are not displayed fully, its get choped and the rest is shown at the side of the screen.
Dizgustipated, Thank you so much, for making it easier to download your Rom. More grease to your elbows.

[APP] SwitchMe Root Profile Manager needs GSII testers please!

Hi everyone. Im one of the developers of SwitchMe, and app that allows multiple secure logins into separate installations of android on a single device. The pr is after the break.
I really need a few people to check into some issues people on some ROMs have been experiencing. There are some warnings involved:
- testers must perform a full nandroid backup before using the app, it is not our responsibility if you start getting boot loops
- if you report results or bugs, please use the "Write to us" function in the app whenever possible, and always describe the issue in the header of the logs you send
- if you post here, bes sure to include your device type and rom
- if you have apps installed on sd, be sure to mention that as well
--------------------------------------------------------------------
SwitchMe is a unique application for root users that allows you to log in and out of multiple installations of Android just as you would on a desktop computer.
The technology behind SwitchMe saves all of your applications and data, protects it and stores it as a file in memory. You can then log out of an
account and log into a fresh installation of Android or another account with its own unique content.
You may create as many profiles as the memory is capable of holding. Some of these may require very little free memory because they contain few apps,
others will be larger as they contain many applications and lots of cache and data.
Why is this functionality useful?
Privacy - the most obvious benefit is that you can securely share one device among multiple users, which gives you privacy and peace of mind.
Testing - if you are a developer, you can use profiles as clean sandboxes to test your applications and their interaction with the system.
Gaming – with multiple installations of Android on a single device, you can now play online MMOs as different characters.
Speed - the games your kids play slow down your tablet, but with SwitchMe you can easily create profiles without games or instant messengers.
Battery life - when the battery is low but there are important emails or documents to edit later, switch to a profile which only contains these essentials.
These of course are only suggestions - there are plenty of other uses for the functionality SwitchMe offers.
Market link:
https://market.android.com/details?id=fahrbot.apps.switchme
The Lite version allows the creation of two profiles, enough to test on.
Screens:
SwitchMe 1.2 has been rolled out and now includes a lockscreen replacement:
1.2
Added lock screen for logging in and out
More stable Fast switch implementation
Reworked UI colors
Now, its very important that we get some feedback on how this big new feature works, so please read up on it in the help and post your thoughts!
1.2.2 - HOTFIX 2
Reworked widget on qHD+ displays
Fixed widget text on HC and ICS
Fast switch improved on older devices
Nice, thanks!
Thank you! Any issues to report?
What do you think of yesterday's update?
1.4.3.7
Fixed device specific switch screen crashes and issues
Fixed UI bug in switch screen preferences
If anyohe had problems with superuser before, this should fix them. Please let me know if that is the case, its important we get some feedback here!
This is working perfectly with CyanogenMod 9. Will this continue to work if I update to a newer nightly?

I dont see why not. Just make sure you back up your profiles to the SD card if you do a wipe.
They are in /data/.profiles. Next release will have an im-app backup function.
1.5.3.0
Enabled full support for MIPS and x86 architectures
Many root daemon code fixes and optimizations implemented
Sorry backup is relegated to the next release.
Thought I should let you guys know of the issue I had with the paid version of this earlier.
Running Hyperdroid Androidmeda 6.1.17, I rebooted my phone and SwitchMe would ask me to log in, however it wouldn't list the username, wouldn't log in when I put the info in myself, and wouldn't even say the password was wrong when I entered it wrong on purpose. I tried multiple reboots etc, the issue persisted.
Unfortunately I don't have a logcat or anything since I was in a rush to get my phone working properly (had to leave soon) so I restored a nandroid from before I installed SwitchMe
This was all before the 1.5.3.0 release btw, happened last week.
Yes, that was hotfixed a few hours later. The main thread also has a flashable zip which will "unswitchme"
THANKS good

Hey mac are you gonna start this project?
@sixline
No need to do more ports. You are already using one. I've tried WFLSL's port and it's fine for me.
Try Wenwen's port http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fbbs.gfan.com%2Fandroid-5824462-1-1.html
Or try some other roms: http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fbbs.gfan.com%2Fforum-818-1.html
But it's better if we have an official CM for our phones. We'll support your request.

Post 2: Stock Roms
Post 3: AOSP Roms
*** If you're going from a stock rom to an AOSP rom, read this ***
When you flash an AOSP rom it creates a folder marked 0 on your sdcard, and once it's created, you will ONLY be able to access files in the 0 folder, whether in the rom itself or in recovery. Here's a workaround.
1) Flash back to a stock based rom (If you haven't flashed an AOSP ROM yet you're already here)
2) Using a file explorer (and making sure "show hidden files" is checked) create a folder called 0 in the root of your sdcard if there isn't one there already. Cut and paste everything else in the root of your sdcard into that folder (the one called 0). You can copy and paste if you want but it'll be slower and you'll double the amount of space you're using.
3) Go ahead and reboot into recovery. Do a backup of your current setup and then install your new ROM
4) Everything should be where you expect it to be. If you choose to go back to a stock rom, you'll just have to flash the rom, cut everything out of the 0 folder and into the root of your sdcard, and then make sure you delete the 0 folder once it's empty so that TWRP can see everything it needs to.
Explanation:
I thought it'd be nice to have a central place to see what's what when it comes to sprint Optimus G roms. At first I did this to sort of keep my thoughts straight on the various available roms, but then I thought hey why not share with the community. Also we're coming up on finals week and I have a very special type of procrastination in which I clean, organize, make threads, or otherwise do anything remotely productive that is NOT related to studying. Also also, my intention is to update this post on a semi regular basis, as the development scene is a constantly changing (improving, I should say) place for this phone. That is, assuming people find this thread useful.
About me:
College student who loves his Optimus G. I typically check XDA way more than is healthy, and bounce back and forth between most of the wonderful roms available for this phone.
Thread Etiquette: (please read)
Apparently you're a classy bunch, so I don't think this section is necessary.
Now for the meat of the post! I will not be reviewing ICS roms. Mainly because you have two choices, imperium and lifeless, and their respective jelly bean forms are reviewed here. Plus you should probably upgrade to jelly bean, it's better in most ways. If you need to root, unlock, etc, look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2050582
Remember, IRC is your friend. If you run into troubles and need immediate aid, go to http://webchat.freenode.net/ and join the channel #lg-optimus-g . They're very friendly over there. Also, there are guides to help you out all over the place on the forums.
Recoveries
Somebody wanted me to say a few words about recoveries, so here goes. We have two options, TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) and CWM (Clockwork Mod). TWRP is touch enabled, while CWM requires use of volume keys and power button to navigate. Additionally, we're officially supported by TWRP. I'm not so sure about CWM (I don't even know if they do official support, etc).
Honestly, I don't see any reason to not use TWRP. Most users opt for TWRP for its touch friendliness, and ease of use. It also has a nicer UI in my opinion. I used CWM way back on my Optimus S, and it got schtuff done, but I think most of the roms and everything here are tested by flashing through TWRP. So unless you have some special reason for wanting CWM, I'd choose TWRP if I were you.
Thanks to all the devs/testers/users who made these roms possible!
Stock Based
Rom Name: Stock
Developer: Everyone's favorite South Korean electronics manufacturer, LG! (Samsung, pffff)
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2176365 (in case you need to flash back to stock)
Brief Description: Not much needed here. Everybody's pretty familiar with this one!
Pros: It's what LG and Sprint want for you. They think this is just the bees knees, and if you think they have your best interests at heart, keep it! Most of the actual pros I'll discuss in lifeless.
Cons: Bloat, primarily. I've yet to meet the person who actually uses Sprint Zone. The messaging app is kind of buggy, I've heard, though since the JB update I haven't encountered much.
Major Bugs: None as far as I know.
Rom Name: Lifeless
Developer: AdriVelazquez
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2083320
Brief Description: Essentially (stock) - (bloat) + (tweaks) = lifeless. If you seek (stock)-(nearly everything that isn't necessary) check out imperium. If you like stock but don't like all of the Sprint/LG nonsense, this could be the one. And if it's worth anything to you, this is probably the rom that you'll find on my phone most of the time.
Pros:
- Aroma Installer allows you to get a VERY customized rom experience. Choose boot animation, preinstalled apps, which bloat you like, launchers, tweaks, sotkeys
- Liberty Evolved kernel optional. For most up to date version, see note at end of section.
- You can get just about as close to or as far from stock as you'd like while still being stock. If you don't think you can as far from stock as you'd like to be, consider Imperium (also stock based) or an AOSP rom.
- Performance/battery options like eco-mode and power saver.
- Pretty customizable lockscreen, with the cool dewdrop animation.
Cons: (note that these aren't really faults of the rom itself, it dos what it purports to do quite admirably)
- Still looks like stock, which is only a con if you hate the stock look. The notification pull-down menu is still cluttered. The settings app is still goofy looking.
- 4.1.2, not 4.2. So no lockscreen widgets, or any other advantages that 4.2 has to offer.
Major Bugs: None. One of the more bug-free roms, and if that's something you value, you should seriously consider this.
Rom Name: Imperium Initiative
Developer: Lokifish Marz
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2111607
Brief Description: This is basically stock totally stripped down and outfitted to look like AOSP. Conceived and manifested at a time when there wasn't any taste of AOSP available for our Optimus G, this rom did a good job emulating AOSP. However, it is stock based, however little it may look it. The developer behind it, Lokifish Marz, wanted me to mention that it's not really a rom, it just plays one on TV. In his words, it's "more a lightweight tuned base and series of mods for other devs and tinkerers to build and test on for their own ROMs and kernels". (If you want more info, his post is on the second page.)
However I'm going to leave it listed as a ROM, since I think that's what most users (myself included, up until mere hours ago) view it as. ROM or not, I think it's the most "barebones" option available.
Pros:
- Liberty Evolved Kernel included, though not the most up to date version. See note at the end of this section.
- AOSP look and feel, for the most part
- Relative stability of a stock based rom
- Quite nearly zero bloat
- Itsy bitsy (<500 mb) size. For reference, the stock ZVB rom is over a gig.
- Has a fun martian theme, right down to the background and boot image.
- Total feature list (copied from thread)
Almost all bloat and Google apps have been removed
AOSP/CM calculator, calendar and email replaces LG calculator, calendar and email
ES Explorer replaces LG file browser
AOSP lockscreen
AOSP 4.2 Keyboard
Jelly Bean Softkeys (change qemu.hw.mainkeys=0 to qemu.hw.mainkeys=1 in build.prop to disable)
Google Wallet
Android Tuner as system app
ROMstats added (server currently down)
Removed OTA service
Removed Connection Optimizer
Removed Qualcomm location enhancer
GPS tweaks
Liberty-Evolved v1.13 kernel (thanks Evolutionmods)
Camera tweaks (thanks _Epic)
Thermal mod (thanks Adri)
Awesome Beats Audio (Acid Audio was a major source of issues in the previous release)
Tuned to provide better battery life
Wifi scan changed to 300
Network tweaks (included tweaks for all network types the hardware supports)
Over 200,000 AdBlock hosts built in
build.prop edits and cleaning
Has my personal "loki" init.d script
Imperium standard issue default wallpaper
Martian Imperium boot animation with device info, build info and credits
Frees up tons of RAM and space in /system
Tons of other tweaks I can't remember
Cons:
- If there are any stock features you DO like, you might have to jump through hoops to reimplement them on this rom. Lifeless has the edge in that you can selectively remove things upon install.
Major Bugs: Again, fairly bug free as far as I know. While I ran it I had no major issues.
Note/Plug:
Liberty Evolved Kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2181976
Developer: EvolutionMods
I highly recommend this kernel. It's very stable, still in active development, and can only help. It's currently for stock based roms only.
There's now an alternate kernel for those running AOSP.
Houcha kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2246163
I haven't really used it yet but it's always nice to have choices!
AOSP-Wide Bugs: These bugs apply to every AOSP rom, aka any rom in this post.
-Camera focus: Some camera daemon keeps running when it shouldn't, or doesn't run when it should, or something. But that's immaterial, the end result is that after closing and reopening any camera app, autofocus will not work. There's a workaround that involves running a script every time you need to use a camera app. This is the biggest bug for me, and is what keeps me on stock in spite of the Play Music problems.
-Audio over headset: Some users have reported audio problems when on the phone and using a headset. On the phone meaning in a call.
-GPS: If GPS isn't working, flashing a stock rom, getting a GPS lock, then flashing back should fix the problem
AOSP Based
- AOSP based. It's the general consensus that since AOSP is maintained by Google, it is the pure android experience and is what Google thinks their operating system should be. Google's motives are for the most part believed to be more for the end user's benefits, as carrier and manufacturer modifications are either (a) well meant but poorly implemented or (b) commercially motivated and irritating. Google wants its OS to be the best in the world, and many think that it is
Rom Name: CyanogenMod 10.1 (Unofficial)
Developer (for our phone): Shellnutt2 (Other people are certainly involved, I'm just listing whoever's name is on the thread, this goes for all roms)
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2189788
Brief Description: A source build (thanks jblazea50) of probably the most famous rom in the android world, though that may be debatable. AOSP goodness, plus some extras. Stable for the most part, and actively being worked on by our fabulous devs.
Pros:
- General advantages of running CyanogenMod can be found here http://www.cyanogenmod.org/about/features
- Reader's digest version? Customizable user interface, lockscreen, very themeable, powerful equalizer, and more...
Major Bugs: None. Only minor bugs, and they're being steadily ironed out.
Rom Name: EOS 4.0
NO LONGER UNDER ACTIVE DEVELOPMENT: This is not to say it's not a serviceable rom, but if you're looking for updates, look elsewhere.
Developer: teamEOS/rlasalle15
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2219393
Brief Description: Another AOSP based rom, that concentrates on stability. Implements some features of CyanogenMod, and some of its own. Maintained by teamEOS. (If it matters, this is my AOSP rom of choice)
Pros:
- Full feature list, copied from original thread
NX Gesture Navigation Bar
Custom Quick Toggles Tiles with Brightness & Volume Seekbars
Softkeys Long-Press Actions
Custom Navigation Bar Ring Quick Launch Targets
EOS Status Bar Toggles
Navigation Bar Color w/ Project Glass (Auto-Transparency, not the Google Project Glass )
Status Bar Color
Battery Indicator Mods
Clock Mods
T-Mobile Theme Engine
Hide System Bars
Performance Settings
Volume keys switch depending on rotation. So the volume up key is always either on the top or to the right of volume down. (Toggle-able)
Default Volume Control Stream (Ring or Media)
Advanced power menu with reboot options.
Eos Control Center
MORE...
- Reader's Digest version? Very themeable, like CM 10, EOS control center includes performance and UI tweaks all in a central place. The volume keys switch according to the orientation of the phone, resulting in a more intuitive volume control. Reboot options include reboot to recovery and bootloader, which is convenient if you spend a lot of time in recovery. Personally I'm paranoid about holding buttons down all the time, I don't want things to break or loosen or whatever, so software tweaks like that make me happy.
- You can turn off the screen off animation, which is something I like to be able to do. I couldn't figure out how to do this on CM10.1, please PM me or something if you know how and I'll amend this. When it's late at night and my room is dark, it's irritating to have the brightness very low but the screen off animation flashing very brightly.
Major Bugs: None aside from universal bugs.
Rom Name: AOKP (CAVEAT - I have not personally tried this rom. Take my opinions with a large grain of salt. Actually I've tried not to put my opinion in this part at all, just reporting what I've read)
Developer: spleef
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2235291
Brief Description: Stands for Android Open Kang Project. Another fork of AOSP, with its own special features and modifications. It's now a source build, boots up fine, runs well. Being very actively developed, so for the latest and greatest check the thread.
Pros:
- General AOKP features can be found here http://aokp.co/
Cons:
- Again, has its own feature set, but if you're looking for particular features then make sure you do your research and check out all of the roms available.
Major Bugs: None in addition to the universal ones.
Rom Name: Liquid Smooth
Developer: spleef
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2373267
Brief Description: LiquidSmooth is an aftermarket firmware based on the Android Open Source Project.
Dedicated to providing users with smooth, stable and fast ROMs. A Lightweight modified AOSP base, and then add the features you crave! (Quoted from thread)
What makes this ROM special?
It seems like the main differentiator with this ROM is how smooth it is, or purports to be. I tested it for a day or so, and found that it was indeed smooth, though I've yet to find a stuttery ROM for this phone. What I did notice was that there seemed to be a different set of animations, which may make things seem even smoother. It's hard to quantify smoothness, and what's smooth for me could be even smoother for you. Or less smooth. Or of comparable smoothivity. Smoov. Anyhow. Try it out.

Disclaimer: I am merely human. I make mistakes. This guide is by no means comprehensive. If you see an error I've made, inform me! Through PM or thread response, whichever you deem more appropriate (though if you think a post wouldn't be constructive, I recommend a PM). But please do so politely. To borrow a phrase that a fellow XDA'er seems to be fond of (crwolv) and that I have become fond of as a result (fondness by association?), let's all be couth. I really really really dislike personal attacks that I see in the forums, and while I'm by no means immune to getting upset and posting in that state, I think resolving issues with another user is a great use for the PM feature.

I can't adequately express in writing the noise of frustration that I just made. But upon further thought, this is at least slightly different in that it goes into more detail? In the time it took me to type this, I've calmed down, decided this thread is not completely redundant. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Not so, as this is a review. I'd hate to see this closed cause it's great to know what to expect from a ROM and others troubles.
Great job with the reviews! I'm running CM 10.1 now
CM10.1 isn't a port. It is based on source.

I can't adequately express in writing the noise of frustration that I just made. But upon further thought, this is at least slightly different in that it goes into more detail? In the time it took me to type this, I've calmed down, decided this thread is not completely redundant. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I didn't mean any harm or "noise of frustration" that you made. Carry on!
EDIT: Just an FYI, mods will probably see this as a ROM opinion thread, which they don't like. I just don't want you to be surprised if it does get locked.

Good stuff. While those of use who flash frequently know already most of what is going on with these ROMs, this will here very helpful to new members as they arrive.
Thanks for your time.

Oof. I hope not! I tried to keep it pretty factual. But what happens, happens. I didn't know opinion threads were frowned upon. And of course I know you didn't intend frustration
I dont know about everybody else but I actually enjoyed reading the reviews of all roms.
I hope you continue to update the first post everytime a rom updates, so we can stay up-to-date
Thanks for taking the time for a review. This should help new users coming in, as well as explain what's going on with these Roms so you don't have to read through 1000 posts.
Very well done
This was a great overview of the choice of options we have. very well written and through. I don't know about anyone else here, but I really hope we get a team nocturnal release. i loved the sony ui!
Great review

I appreciate the effort and time you put into this. When something big goes down such as when cm 10.1 became available, it doesn't take too long to get way behind and then have to sit and read through pages of posts. This will be a good source. Thanks
What about custom recoveries? TWRP and CWM are rather varying in functionlaities, layout, input methods ect.
TWRP vs CMW
Haven't used cwm for awhile, but twrp easy to use plus has touch screen interface. Last time I used cwm it wasn't as easy. But as with anything, it slop depends on your preferences.
Just thought I'd drop in and clarify something about Initiative. It really isn't a ROM, it's just packaged as such for ease of distribution. Like Initiative on other devices, it more a lightweight tuned base and series of mods for other devs and tinkerers to build and test on for their own ROMs and kernels. That's part of the reason it's called "Initiative". Except for a couple things, there is little difference between "Initiative" and "Agent". Also except for the bug fixes it tends to only get updated when the stock base changes.
BTW, thanks for the review/guide. It's something a lot of newcomers really need when playing with their new toy.
