I plan to buy a second hand Vibrant phone but it has screen protector that has a small horizonal oblong cut suited for the four capacitive android buttons which I find not visually pleasing to the overall four inch screen.
Should I buy a new full screen protector?
or it there a good reason why the four capacitive buttons should remain unprotected by a thin screen?
Please share your experience. Thanks
Mine is full screen and I've never had any issues.
I use full screen as well. It's probably easier to align and apply anyway.
As long as you get a quality screen protector youll be fine, some of the cheaper lower quality protectors lower the response of the capacitive screen. I recommend Reallook, though i have since stopped using screen protectors
honestly you dont need a screen protector as the phone has gorilla glass on it, I've had the phone for over a year and only have 2 little nicks that arent noticable

Thanks to all of you guys for your recommendations.
This may sound a stupid question but, if I use a full screen protector, wouldn't it cover the above front speaker?
The ones for the vibrant will have a cut hole for the speaker. Covers everything else.
And +1 on the Reallook brand.
Hands down I recommend Realook. Especially if you use Swype. I tried the Zagg screen and I was disappointed because it was really hyped up to me. Realook for sure from now on (plus they send you two!).
Depends what you do. I work in real dusty enviroments so going full works for me cuz sooner or later dust starts building up on the edges of the cutouts and it starts being noticable. I ended up just getting some cheap ebay ones and I had no sensitivity problems. I work hard for my money so I cant see myself paying $10+ for screen protectors...but then again thats just my cheap ass maybe.

...would of have no nicks at all if you would of used a screen protector. It will all depend what you do in life to see if your phone screen has a high chance of getting damaged. That's why screen protectors are for some people and not others.
I use a full screen Zagg shield and love it. Why you wouldn't want the capacative buttons covered I'm not sure.
I dont know about anyone else but the screen quality i think is crap. I dont know how but i have a huge deep scratch on the screen. I only dropped it once in about 2 months and after i pulled it out of my pocket there it is. Isnt the s3 suppose to have gorilla glass, isnt that suppose to be good.
I've noticed a bunch of "micro scratches" but those are probably in the oleophobic coating and I bet they'll be gone a few months from now when the coating wears off. I haven''t got any actual scratches though so it's holding up quite well. I also abuse my phone quite a bit and have dropped it a few times.
You have to remember, though, Gorilla glass is chemically hardened, but not indestructible. Sand and other particles that are harder than it can still scratch it. I'm willing to bet you put your phone face down somewhere and moved it, or did something similar to get that scratch.
The phone uses gorilla glass 2, which is a cheaper and weaker version of gorilla glass.

I have never noticed lol mine is behind a screen protector with the Otter Box. But it's gorilla glass?? This screen feels nothing like the HTC Evo OG's screen which was gorilla glass. This one feels more cheap and easy to break. But maybe I get that impression by the phone's plastic outer surface being flimsy. My Evo's screen got pretty banged up (no protector) with minor dents, so these screens are next to perfect, but not perfect
Seriously, I chucked my phone at the wall a couple of weeks back and the point of impact was directly on the top right corner which resulted in a somewhat noticeable flat spot. I have no case on, but I do have one of those life-time warranty, thick screen protectors that I usually avoid because of the tacky feeling that never really goes away. Well, I'm glad I bought the screen protector now, because after hearing horror stories of S3's being dropped from only a couple of feet resulting in shattered screens, mine shook off a corner impact with the wall after being launched from across the room.
**UPDATE**
Dropped my phone just now and went for the mid-air grab. FAIL! Ended up swatting it down like Shaq instead, rocketing it towards the floor in my restroom, ending in a flat, direct screen to tile impact. No cracks! It's all about the screen protector, I'm telling you.
All it takes is one drop, the screens are super fragile. Using an XO Skin and I havent shattered mine. They fill in scratches as well, may be worth a shot.
This was the video I saw on it. Shame the iphone did better

And my phone fell from a moving car at 50MPH Saturday evening and it still works even though the screen is annihilated. I feel that if it wasn't as strong, it would not be working.
I have called several local repair shops and they all say that the glass screen, digitizer and LCD are all one piece. From my research, I have proved otherwise. Don't want to do the repair myself, don't want to pay them $300+ to do it for me and don't want to pay $150 for the insurance replacement.

It's not weaker. It's harder (ie more brittle and prone to cracking). Also I believe it's thinner (also more prone to cracking). That can all be solved with a screen protector and a case. I have an i-luv case that adds very little thickness and some off brand screen protector that's like $10 for three and I have a ton of them so when they get mucked up just change it out. Serious protect your phone; especially if you don't "want" to pay the insurance fee. It's ridiculous when someone makes a thread blaming the gorilla GLASS (key word--glass breaks fyi) when they don't have a screen protector

I know some people on eBay who sell white OEM Touchscreen/Digitizer/LCD kits for the Sprint version/L710 of the Samsung Galaxy S III for around $75with free shipping and includes a green tool for popping the case open. You'd have to search youtube for the instructions to DIY. I've dealt with them not since 2010 and have never had any issues with any of the products I've bought from them. It beats paying $150 Asurion deductible or full SRP.

Not Gorilla Glass
The Galaxy SIII's don't have gorilla glass, they have the cheaper, only scratch-resistant version of gorilla glass.

Gg doesn't prevent shattering, just scratches
Not sure how my phone has survived, but it has, from several drops from different heights and all I have a single deep scratch and some minor micro scratches that I can live with. The last one was from my hand at about 4' and was smacked down by accident by better half and fell face down. was expecting for it to completly shattered but it was ok.
I do have a cover, but I don't think it does much to absorb shock.

Yeah well it that regard it has failed miserably compared to my HTC Hero which I had for 2.5 years and dropped, kicked, skidded, etc. over a dozen times and not one scratch, micro scratch, nadda, zero, zilch. As for the GSIII, well a little FYI...don't do the key test. Luckily I only got micro scratches from it which you can't even see unless in direct lighting with the screen off. My fault? Definitely. Did I expect the same quality if not better than my HTC hero? Yes. Did we get it? No. Lesson learned? I won't be showing the "key test" to iPhone users anymore lol

Has anyone had to replace their screen? If so, where did you buy your screen from? I have been looking on eBay and have found decent prices. I just worry about buying stuff from China / Hong Kong that might not work. If you have replaced your screen, or you know a place that sells reputable parts, please let me know!!!
Have you pulled the screen yet and got the part numbers?

I bought a very cheap Galaxy Note 10.1 with a cracked glass at eBay. At the same time I bought a replacement glass also at eBay.
When I received the tablet I noticed there was really no need to replace the glass since the crack was outside the viewing area and didn't affected at all visibility or touch.
Even so, I decided to change the glass because the tablet was white and the glass I ordered was black and I find it much better for watching movies and also the white border tends to darken the colours when using a paint program. (so now my tablet is unique: black in the front, white in the back
The Note is very easy to disassemble if you have the adequate tools for opening plastic cases. It is very modular so it is all a matter of removing connectors and taking pieces out. Finally you have the front case and the glass and here is the difficult thing because the glass is glued to the case so you have to apply heat with a heat gun on low or a hair dryer on high until the glue becomes soft and easy to separate. even so, I broke my old glass even more when trying to remove it. It may be Gorilla glass, very resistant to scratches, but it is thin as hell, very fragile.
Placing the new glass was much easier. It comes with glue and screen protectors on both sides.
My only concern was the original glass had a thin layer of dark grey EVA all around the screen that I suppose is for cushioning the gap between the glass and the LCD and the replacement glass didn't have it. But I haven't had any problem with the new glass and apparently, all the replacement glasses I've seen don't have this EVA layer. Tactile detection is perfect, just like the original.

If anybody knows about how to add the thin layer of EVA or somebody who sells it, please, leave a reply.

The same glass will work for models 8000, 8010 and 8013. The difference between them is the 3G connectivity so it doesn't affect the glass design (it could have not been necessarily the case, but it does. A good example of not taking anything for granted is the Galaxy S3 where the screen bezel is different from 3G to 4G version)

In ifixit there is a very good tear-down of the Galaxy Note 10.1 where you can clearly see the process for opening the tablet and accessing the glass:
https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung+Galaxy+Note+10.1+Teardown/10144
Basically you remove the silver piece where the camera is, then the back plate, and then you begin to remove components (battery, motherboard, speakers, cameras, docking port, audio jack, etc) until you have just the frame, the glass and the LCD. Then you have to break some plastic fasteners to get loose the metal frame and release the LCD. At that point you have the silver plastic bezel with the glass attached to it. Applying heat with a hair-dryer to loosen the glue, remove the broken glass and then apply the new one. Then follow the reverse process to get everything inside again.
You can test the tablet with just the glass, LCD, motherboard and battery to check the screen is working OK. Then disconnect the battery again and put back the rest of the components. Another check before closing the back plate and there you go.
As for tools, you will need a screwdriver for the screws, a guitar prick for the back plate and some flat plastic tool to release the internal connectors. You can see the tools in the pictures of the tear-down.
One last thing: make sure the glass you order includes the touch sensor. The glass alone is of no use (still there are people who sell it)

Does anyone know where to find a front bezel? I did see the one from parts4all or whatever its called overseas with shipping as much as it costs and god knows when it would arrive- I cannot seem to find any.
This device mount gorilla glass 3.i trust it.But maybe the display under gorilla glass is tooo weak.damn i had a s4 used without protection for 2 years.absolutely no scratches.Besides use display protection with the zenfnone2's low brightness woud be bad.i have this zenfone from 2 months and an ugly scratch is often visible.so i think the display is weak.s4 has gorilla glass 3 too but its diplay is stronger itself, without considering the gorilla glass.this thing annoy me
Had mine for 2 week without screen protection and it had small scratches all over. Keep in mine i had the asus flip cover with it witch is covered the whole time it was inside my pocket and so. I dont know what the cause of this. But i order an tempered glass to protected it from now on

Agreed with this guy. Mine's perfect? Maybe you put it in the same pocket as keys or something?
My dog stepped all over my screen and it's fine. lol Not even micro scratches.
No guys, i put it in quite secure places. Maybe in the same pocket of the lighter or the keys something like 1 or 2 times. However is a shallow and tiny scratch but sometimes it's visible and it's annoying
I have a couple minor scratches that aren't noticeable with screen on maybe 1 cm or so. . I have a glass protector on the way. . Don't know what caused it maybe the time I accidently put phone in pocket with screwdriver. Anyway hopefully screen protector hurries up from China

I once saw an S4 with a very long scratch, maybe 4-5 centimeters long, after less than a week of use. You have to remember that no matter what, sand is the same hardness as the screen (glass is made of sand, after all ) and will scratch it.
Easiest solution, get a tempered glass screen protector. They're about $5 on ebay. If it gets scratched or cracked, replace it...

I strongly agreed. In fact, I'd say phone makers should just stop using those fancy monkey-named glass to keep the price low, and let the customers spend the money on the tempered glass protector - or just make it standard accessories.

The tempered glass screen protectors are naturally quite rigid before application, but bizarrely I wasn't able to find many glass ones for this when I was looking. Perhaps it's something to do with the very flat profile that the body has around the screen, such would have a very discernible "step" between the screen and the body. I have a protector made by Celicious, which is some type of polyurethane and it seems to be doing a great job, not the typically easily-scuffed plastic protectors. Has anyone else used a tempered glass protector for the Zenfone 2 and what are your thoughts on it?

I have 2 Zenfone 2's. Both have glass screen protectors. The ones I bought have a curved edge and are really good.
Glass will always feel like glass (these are NOT plastic or anything else). Just make sure to get the version with the left hand side proximity sensor cutout as there were problems reported with complete glass versions where the screen wouldn't come back on after calls.
No real problems but if possible try to get oleophobic coating as it will cut down on fingerprints though a quick wipe will fix it if you don't have this.
As I said $5AUD on ebay for these, here - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/371300680925?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

I bought this one http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00SMAC0BW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00 on 1st july and it has no scratches at all (had the phone 2 weeks before that and no scratches there neither).
Also got the black hardcover (which includes a pretty ****ty protective plastic foil)
Btw, keys etc shouldn't be able to scratch the screen at all. Even with quite a bit of force (just tested it ... you can feel if it's just gliding smooth over the screen). Sand can have particles in it which are hard enough

Full sized (+ completly sticky I think): https://www.gearbest.com/screen-protectors/pp_1701108.html?wid=1433363
Black edges (just the black ones are sticky --> newton rings possible not frequent - but you can't get bubbles):
https://www.gearbest.com/screen-protectors/pp_1702404.html?wid=1433363
That should be fine cheers

Thanks but people giving 5 stars are paid by sellers. If you check reviewers profile you can see that they have reviewed many products 5 stars for same seller. :/ Anyway i bought screen protector from Mi store at 129rs.
It's better to go for offline stores for tempered glass. For backcover u opt for KAPAVER Case , which offers a good amount of protection against accidental falls(available in Amazon & Flipkart India)

I also live in India and there mi homes in my city and in local market also there is huge range of covers and glasses I whould also recommend to go in local market in normal conditions but the original one is good and cheap so......
I have used Tempered Glass protectors for all my phones in the past and I can tell you a difference between the expensive and cheap ones is in the adhesive type used.
In my experience 99% of the tempered glass from aliexpress are those of the cheap adhesive type.
They come off pretty easy, sometimes even after a few weeks/months on its own.
The one which are more expensive have adhesive that "hardens" over time and will reach maximum hardness after one week. Those are hard to get off.
I've contacted the brand which I have made best experience with when it comes to 9h tempered glass.
They told they have already planned one for the redmi note 5 and their product will be available starting next month on amazon. They will even send me a notification mail once it gets live.
I will link it here once I get it.
How is touch responsiveness with hard glass installed ? It is much worse ? My dad had one installed on Galaxy S7 Edge and since I saw him touching multiple times on one spot because screen wasn't responding I became very scepticall about hard glass

Its pretty good, I have the one with the black edges, apart from the fact that it cuts the screen a bit, I can't even notice that its there

The thing is you don't need 9h tempered glass as your tempered glass is more strong then your phone glass if you throw your phone the phone screen will crack leaving the tempered glass with no damage ,I will recommend buying the glass which is lower in hardness scale then your phone's glass as when tempered glass breaks it absorbs the force so better protection for you phone.

no he's right, technically...
If the screen protector cracks first, it absorbs and disperses more of the impact force within itself...
Shouldn't matter that much in practice, these protecters aren't really gonna be 9h...
