I use Hangouts for SMS and Hangouts. I've changed my notification sounds for both SMS and Hangouts, but the default "Hangouts Message" notification still plays. Does anyone have this issue? This was not an issue on my N6.
Go into settings/apps/hangouts then check permissions. Make sure Storage is enabled. I have enabled all of them since I use hangouts for everything.
Had the same problem on my N5 running 6.0.
Have a N5X now and I love it
That was the issue. Thanks!
Was having the same issue too. Thanks!
On that note, I've read that some apps are failing to ask for the run-time permissions like they are supposed to. It's suggested to take a look at any/all apps that are showing any kind of odd behavior for permission problems.

I've been using Go SMS Pro for a while along with Tablet Talk. Recently, I've been having some Weird Stuff happening. Go SMS will often have a notification that "Sticks" even after I've read a message, making me have to hit clear. Message syncing has also been a bit quirky lately.
So I've uninstalled Go SMS Pro after backing up the settings to the internal memory/sdcard. But when I go into Messaging and re-enable notifications, it does not allow me to set the corresponding ringtone/vibrate settings anymore. I have tried clearing data on the messaging app with no success. I'm running the current stock T-Mobile ICS firmware with root.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Hi there to the best community of developers! :good:
I’m having an issue with Google Hangouts SMS notifications. I don’t know if it has to do with my phone or not but I have a Galaxy S3 T999 and when I receive an SMS, hangouts doesn’t notify me. On the other hand if I receive a hangout chat I instantly receive a notification. I have turned on the SMS notifications in the Hangout's settings. I also turned off the notifications in the stock Messaging app and in Go SMS app which I was using before moving to hangouts. I thought it might have to do with a conflict with other SMS app notifications, but that neither has resolved the issue. I’ve read through the forum but haven’t found anything related, so I will really appreciate any help on this.
No SMS alerts
I am also experiencing this issue.
When I go into the settings of Google Hangouts there is a section for SMS in which the only options for notifications is for sounds.
I will receive both a icon in the notification bar, my notification light will blink, and an alert will go off when I receive a Google Hangouts message, but nothing for SMS.
I am running 4.1.2 on a Galaxy S3 - SGH-I747
Freeze GoSMS and Stock SMS. Wipe data for Hangouts and then reboot. Login to Hangouts and set all the preferences all over.
No luck

How do you mean "freeze" the apps?
I cleared their cache and did a Force Stop. I wiped Hangouts and rebooted, set my preferences and still nothing.
I also set Hangouts as my Default Messaging App.
Still no notifications.
Titanium Backup will freeze the apps.
Thanks!

Thanks Perseus71 for your response! I did as you suggested and it indeed solved the problem. I wonder though if someone with a non-rooted Galaxy S 3 T999 could solve this issue since Titanium Backup is for rooted devices only. But again thanks for your support.

They can still do it without freezing, all you gotta do is uncheck the option in gosms to disable other SMS app notifications

Yes its possible to do for Non-Rooted devices. In Settings > Apps , you can hit disable for the given app. If you had any updates, then you will have to remove them first before you will get the Disable button.

Perseus, you are a god
Running:
Nexus 7 (2013) WiFi only, 16GB
Android Version: 4.4.4
Cyanogenmod Version: 11
Let me start off by saying that notifications and chat heads are enabled. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the apps, clearing the apps data and clearing the system cache partition.
Everything was fine until last night when randomly I stopped receiving Facebook notifications and chat heads became buggy. I am no longer notified when someone messages me, comments on a post of mine, etc. That doesn't bother me all that much, but the thing that bothers me is that chat heads don't seem to be working properly. They would usually automatically appear when someone messages me but they've stopped doing that. I don't get any sort of notification either. I have to manually open up the app to see if I have been messaged, then press on the conversation I want to open a chat head for. The strange thing is, everything works fine when I'm actually inside the Facebook app. When I'm in the app, chat heads appear automatically like they should. It's only when I close the app so the chat heads are over my other applications that they stop appearing. I can still chat through the already opened chat heads, just none appear so I don't know if I've been messaged.
Here is what I have to do to check if I've been messaged by someone else:
(Image added as attachment as I can't post outside links)
As you can see, instead of their chat head appearing, I have to expand an already active chat head and press the inbox icon. This problem is probably something to do with the notifications not working.
It isn't a heartbeat problem. The notifications don't appear at all. My friend has the same Nexus and he is not facing this problem. Notifications for everything else work fine.
Anyone got any advice?
Thanks.
I've got the same issue man...
Pretty sure they changed the app. You need separate messaging app for Facebook now. I may be wrong though.

Yes they have. And both notifications aren't working.

Just for reference, I've tried:
Uninstalling, then reinstalling Facebook and Messenger
Installing previous versions of both apps
Cleared cache, data of both apps
Triple checked notification settings in both apps and on device
Tried PFN to no avail
Turned platform off and then on again
Also, I had Messenger installed then uninstalled due to privacy concerns and I only noticed the lack of notifications after I reinstalled Messenger. It's as if Facebook is punishing me
Ok. So I've fixed mine. Facebook and Messenger notifications are both working now.
Not entirely sure of the issue, but I've;
Went to root/system/etc and deleted hosts file.
Installed SuperSU and updated binary.
Removed Facebook and Google accounts from device and resynced both.
*edit.
Not sure if it had anything to do with it, but I uninstalled Freedom as well...
I have rooted 4.6.1 with nova launcher. I have tried both amazon store messenger and play store version. When I say no notifications I mean nome. Not eve if I had the app open and switched to my home screen but kept phone on. I have xposed but disabled most modules.
I really need this to work. I have checked app settings, manage notifications, and notification listemers and I don't know what else to try. I can't reset the phone. It took me a dozen hours just to ge.t everything setup.
Edit. I am not sure if any notifications are working right now. Got a text and only after profreminder app sent a reminder beep did I even know.
Edit 2. Outlook works. Attempting to try others.
Ideas welcome.
Hey sorry to do this, but wanted some new visibility from people who may have read the OP. If your notifications are working, could you let me know which if any apps you have disabled, if you are rooted, that sort of thing?

I was bothered by that issue and never got it working. Curiously though, the notification works only when you happen to be in the Settings section of the Facebook Messenger app.
I've changed FireOS for CM11. I don't regret it. Every push notification works as it should.
At this point , and coming from Samsung's, I don't think I'll root my phone. I've already uninstalled or disabled apps from the app drawer main list and none of the system apps.
I remember when I had the Samsungs and after rooting there were long lists of apps to uninstall.
It may be quite different for this phone but Is there such a list for the Pixel 2 ?
Thanks
Not really.
The benefits of stock android is lack of bloatware.
At this point it is just preferential.
I for instance freeze android messenger and use something else
Freeze with titanium backup as my phone is rooted.
But messenger is a decent app i wouldnt knock it.

I too, did the same. I use Verizon's Message +
It's as bare as it gets. Just disable whatever apps you'll never use. I disabled Gmail because I use Inbox. That's it for me.

So you never get any SMS messages at all? Or you have Google Voice and get your SMS in Hangouts?

I am on ProjectFI so I get to use Hangouts for everything still.
However, if messenger is thawed it gets in the way.
Sometimes AndroidAuto will use it.
Sometimes system messages will use it.
Multi Factor authentication messages always use it.
I dont so my message histories are fragmented.
Freezing Messenger resolves the issue.

Yeah I was that way before. I have Google Voice so I could use Hangouts for SMS but Messages works better for me especially if there's group messages. I actually don't use Hangouts anymore because I transitioned my most contacted friends and family to Allo/Duo.
