Utilising external SD card - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After boot I see this entry under my root directory:
lrwxrwxrwx root root 2015-10-16 22:48 sdcard -> /storage/emulated/legacy
I do not understand it very well but it seems the system emulates an SD card using its own memory. Then many applications use this area to save files. The thing is that I have a real external SD Card that I would like all the downloads, music, temp files, documents, everything really to go there.
I have tried to remove the symbolic link 'sdcard' and to make it point to my sd card but I cannot remove it not even as root, read only system, I probably need to use chmod first not sure.
Has anyone done this and know the solution?
Many thanks

The internal storage is emulated as an sdcard.
You can't delete the sym links as they are created upon each boot.
As long as you are rooted you can use your external sd card for whatever you want.
Just point your apps to the right location.

Thank you but I cannot ask all applications to point to the external card. Many applications do not have this setting, either through the Applications Manager or through their own settings. Trying to find files then gets more confusing and every so often I must copy files manually so as to keep them in one place.
Is there perhaps an application that will also run at boot and point to the external card before any other applications start? That might be a good solution?

I have a galaxy tab s and am using Folder Mount and so far (after a few patches the program itself makes with permision) it is working fine for using data files on the storage card.

[Q] Set Default Storage

Looking for a way to set folders to install to EXTERNAL SD card (Not the actual apps). Not like apps2SD...just the folders the apps create for settings and such.
You can specify what location/folder to store pictures taken with the camara too, be it internal or external SD.
This is a setting in the camara app...but most apps dont provide an option like this.
Example:>
We have System, Internal, and if you install External micro SD.
You install Titanium Backup, or other apps that can back up stuff and their own settings, i.e. backup GO launcher settings. When you make your Titanium Backup(s) it creates a folder on INTERNAL storage. Now in the event that something (un-thinkable ) happens to your phone like dropping in water or ran over by MACK truck etc...(you get the point) you can't get it to power on you wont be able to get to any of your files on internal SD. Hopefully your External micro SD would survive and you could take it out, in one of the above examples.
So...that's why I ask if this can be done to bypass the INTERNAL SD in a way. I would actually use the internal for music and movies and put files that I want to make sure stay safe on the EXTERNAL SD. Most of us transfer mp3's and movies etc...from computer so we have copies.
Yeah one could just backup the INTERNAL SD from time to time. But we all know how sometimes this is overlooked.
Not sure if it's something about the way Samsung partitoned the storage or in EEPROM settings or something. On cyanogen mod roms though it had a setting that allowed for this. Phones with less internal storage like HD2 stored the apps on internal and their created folders to external card if one is installed, makes me lean towards the sofware.
P.S. if just move those folders to the External SD the apps dont look their for them.
Thanks for all feedback!
the 2 way i'm familiar with
CM7, has a build in option to do that
you could probably download CM7 source code and dissect that
Link2SD, can do exactly what you want, which is why i always use it to install my apps directly to my External SD card

I wish I could DEV but um more of a tester ! I downloaded some kitchens before but just couldn't get anything going so gave up. Guess I know my place. HAHA
Link2SD sounds like it may work I have to try it. It gives plenty of options!
Thanks
Well on titanium backup you can change itnto backup to the sd instead, just click menu> preferences> backup folder location. At first its set to mnt/sdcard/titaniumbackup, you got to press back and select external sd card and titaniumbackup, or if your sd card already has a titanium folder, just select "detect" and it will find the folder on the ext sdcard

but when you do it that way some apps does not work properly, those that are not SD card compatible

Yeah my point...Getting them to the SD is no problem its the apps wont look their unless they have the option to change default location like above mentioned titanium settings.
Side note: seen the post from Cyanogenmod about CM7 being "in progress" the option is there to set default under applications so all shall be fine soon for this anyway.

Were you talking about my post? If so then all the apps do work properly, its just moving the backups you make on titanium to the sd card, not the app itself

i'm not talking about backups, i'm talking about Apps that are moved forcefully to run from SD, you can do that using TI
but some Apps behaves erratically after that, only SD compatible Apps are unaffected

[Q] Swap internal and external SD

In older versions of Android the external SD would be mounted as /mnt/sdcard but now that is used for the internal memory and the external SD is now /mnt/sdcard/external_sd. This is a bit of a problem as some apps can only save to /mnt/sdcard and it quickly takes up our phone's internal memory. I have offline GPS maps and a few Gameloft games which can only save their data to /mnt/sdcard and as you can imagine free space is very limited.
What I would like is to switch this around. Basically I have a 32GB SD card that I would like to use a storage for some of my apps as it is not being fully utilized. I've searched around and it doesn't seem like there is an easy way to do this. I'm not completely sure but it seems like there are methods that might be specific to different phones which requires modifying a file in /system/etc.
Will this safely work for our phone?

For Recovery swapping has been tried..
You may get some idea..
Maybe the use of symbolic links could help, but I never tried it on an Android device.
I had read people Mapping the External under a directory for example the Games directory and therefore all games would in theory be on the External. I think this is what you mentioned as symbolic links.
How can you do that. I tryed a million things. Last time i installed literom with added swap internal memory to sd mod. And after i copy something in phone i loose the mobile signal. I guess the card is getting corrupted or something. How can i make it so the sd card wont be unmounted when i plug the phone in pc ?
Might want to consider this:
Root External 2 Internal SD
I've not used this specific one myself but I have used similar apps in the past.
I didn't use that yet.
But what i found untill now
1. Using Directory Bind wich makes a link between actual place of the files and where they should be. Example You put com.xxx.xxx in your SD card and set the progam to tell android when is looking into sdcard/android/data/com.xxx.xxx go for files in sdcard/external_sd/com.xxx.xxx
This method is good for games and files for them
2. Another thing is modifing vold.fstab and swapping the way adroid mounts those partitions. (this option is buggy somehow)

Accessing Microsd on phone

Hi, I recently got the CDMA (Virgin Mobile US) One V, and am having issues accessing the microsd folder using file explorers on the phone.
Using astro, if I go "up" as far as possible to /, the options are
mnt
proc
root
sbin
sdcard
sys
system
vendor
On my TF101, removable storage is under sdcard. But if I go under there, the options read
Android
DCIM
Download
LOST.DIR
Notifications
tmp
My question is, do you need root access to access removable storage? And if not, where is it? And yes, the SD card is recognized under settings.
EDIT: When I connected the phone to windows computer, it showed up as one drive, namely just the microsd card's space, and not anything about the phone. Does this mean everything besides apps, like videos/photos taken with the camera and files downloaded, is automatically stored on the microsd card?
Sorry if this is long, first post.
The answer to one of your questions is "yes" the phone does save your downloads and pics/videos to sdcard. I believe the PC only shows your sdcard when you have your phone in drive mode.
No you don't have to be root to access your sdcard.

Just search for directorybind in xda it changes path from internal to sd but u need to setup it yourself.
or just download gl to sd from play store. both requires root.

There is no way to move installed apps (installed .apks) to internal memory except one, and that is to use a mod that makes your phone thinks that sd card is your internal memory and internal memory is your sd card. This way, the phone automatically installs apps to your sd card, because it thinks of it as internal storage.
If you don't like the above option (and I personally don't), then search for Directory Bind. It can't move .apks installed to external but it can basically mount anything on your sd card to your internal. This means that it can be really useful especially for big games (like need for speed) that have up to 2gb stored in your internal memory. Just make sure to download the latest version, which is 0.2.0o. If you learn how to use it, you won't have any shotage in storage issues.

FIrst thing you need to do after installing is go to preferences and change the "Default data path" for the Note 2 path:
Default data path for note 2 should be: /storage/extSdCard
Default target path for note 2 should be: /sdcard/
Tick the Bind on boot box to make the program automatically bind the paths once you boot. Also makes sure that "Persistent Service" is ticked.
Then leave settings and go to Add New Entry. Put the entry you want moved from internal to external.
For example i moved my need for speed game data (1.8gb) to enternal by using this entry
Data path: /storage/extSdCard/Android/data/com.ea.games.nfs13_na/
Target Path: /sdcard/Android/data/come.ea.games.nfs13_na/
Tick the "Transfer files from target to data" and then click "Add".
After that the app basically moved my data from target path to data path and mounted it (it fools the phone into thinking that data is still in your internal storage, that's how it works). After you finish doing all the entries you want, click menu >>More >> Backup database. Read the topic above to learn more.

Yes it should work. I don't see why it wouldn't. You should download 0.2.0o, which is the latest version.
well.. its time to try it .. just before i do . you think its neccessery to backup all my apps with titanium backup ?ty for help..
Like I said, the app doesn't move apps or manipulate them in any way. It can only move folders found in internal storage and mounts them to make the phone think they are still there.

Titanium Backup problem: no option to "Move to SD Card"

I have unlock the bootloader, rooted the phone, and installed custom recovery following this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201148
still running stock rom at the moment.
I installed Titanium Backup Pro, and wanted to move some apps that I don't use often to SD card, but cannot find the option from Titanium menu anymore.
What I found out is that Titanium uses the external directory "sd-ext/app" for moving the apps from internal to external memory.
However, my current SD card is mounted as ext_card and also sdcard1?? I don't know why both of these directories point to the same location, is it something that Sony assigns? or is it how Android is configured right now?
Anyhow, I just want to know if simply renaming the folder ext_card to sd-ext would work?
If not, how can I remount the sd card as sd-ext without affecting other things that are already linked to it?
Thanks.
edit: admin, please move to the appropriate section.
found a work-around.
Just use root browser to create a short cut of "sdcard1", then rename it to sd-ext.
that's it!

I've been trying and trying and TRYING to accomplish your solution, yet I'm not able to modify any files or folders in the internal storage. When I try to do so by any means, my device freezes the app trying to create new files (in this case Root Browser, but it happens with anything else like ES Browser, apps, desktop applications, etc).
I just CAN'T write to the internal storage even if my device is rooted. I've tried to solve this but I just CAN'T. I don't know what else to do.
Any help is appreciated beforehand
THANKS!!
