I have a Note 4 for me and my wife, both rooted. I picked up one for $1 at BB for the kids. I had planned to activate my old GS3 but couldn't pass up the $1 deal. I have twin boys who are turning 13 on Saturday and a daughter who is 11.5. All 3 will use the phone when allowed. When I got them all Nexus 7 tablets I set them up with gmail accounts based on mine. Like [email protected] dot com. That way they all could use the apps I had already purchased when they used my phone to play. They don't use gmail but have POP3 accounts on one of my domains. I don't use social media but have a Google plus account by default. So the conflict with them piggybacking on my Google account is in YouTube history and Calendar etc.
The new Note 4 has 5.1.1 and I hear that 5.1.2 will allow multiple user accounts. Is that true? If so will I need root to get 5.1.2? I rooted their Nexus 7's before I gave them to them and have no problem rooting this phone except... If they wreck it and I need to warranty it. I have not purchased insurance and usually don't.
If I can set up user accounts that will be nice. Can I set up an admin profile? What should I do about a Google account? Use one of the piggy back ones or make a new one that I control?
What have you guys done for your kids phone? Do more than one kid use it and how did you manage that?
Thanks.

If you do root, it is a simple build.prop edit to get multiple users on one device.

Ha, you must be a youngster yourself. I never got a cell phone until I was 38 years old and I paid for it. I never had a computer until I was in my 30's as they were rare in peoples homes. My twins are turning 13 this Saturday and their sister is 11.5. It's going to cost $30/month to add a phone and that's better than $90/month for 3 extra phones. They all have tablets and we usually go everywhere together. The phone will go with whichever kid is going somewhere we are not like birthday parties, sports etc. Though I'm sure they would each like a phone I don't see the necessity at this point. Different profiles would be nice so they can each have their own customization's.
Nope I'm an oldster. .47. Get them all a phone while they're on sale. They will really appreciate it.
Well, good luck to you sir.I'm sure this will go swimmingly.
Two thirteen year old boys sharing a phone with their sister? I see no possible way this could end badly.
As always, your mileage may vary.
Talk about setting them up for failure. ..JMHO though..
From the sounds of it, the tab will be their main technology. I commend the op for the idea. I see no failure here. If they want something to play with, they have the tab. Something like gosms can even be setup for SMS. I see no need for 2 13 year olds and an 11 year old to have thier own phones. Rock it op.
You can also look at something like freedom pop for free to low cost SVC for the S3. In case the need arises for another phone.

Hola lads and lasses,
So I originally set my Epic up on my personal gmail account. Four months later I'd like to move over to my GApps account but in order to remove the gmail it's saying I have to return the phone to factory default. A couple questions. Really? I can't just switch and keep both? Why (or is that moot)? Next question: what's going to happen, what am I going to lose? How should I prepare (I already moved all contacts over to the GApps acct)? Anything else to consider? I have not rooted but will if I must.
Thanks!
T
I never tried but can't you add the second account and switch it to default first?

My guess is to help prevent app sharing.
Me and my g/f both have android devices. We both got a different set of paid apps. I've tried logging in to her account to get her apps but experienced the same problem.

Good question. How do you set a default profile? I don't see that setting anywhere.
I'm not one to be giving advice here, but I am kinda in the same boat. I have a samsung moment on cricket I bought from craigs that has the last owners gmail account on it. I cant reset the phone as from what I heard ill lose the flash. Ne way, from what I read and gathered, but have not tried yet, is to z4root, then download titanium backup, remove gmail app from phone with tb, then download the gmail app from the market. Then log in and it should re ask for an account. I'm gonna do it tommorow and I can let you know if it worked or not.
Don't know I was guessing (hoping for you) lol. Like I said never tried it but the way they word it when you try to delete the main account that's what it sound like. I came across that when I sold my moment so the reset was gonna happen any way

So what's the verdict GB? Did it work? What did you lose (if anything)?
I have a note 2 and until about a month ago I had my work email set up and everything was good. Now corporate makes us use mobile-iron to use our devices with the corporate email. I have not installed it as it encrypts the phone and not that I do anything illegal or out of company policy, gives them the ability to my personal life. During work time i don't have a issue with it, but on my time I don't like it. I had the thought of making up 2 roms one personal, and one for work, but then every time i switched I would have to back up text and call history and restore it. Is there ant way I can have to profiles on one phone or is there any way to use the same folders for sms and phone history? Thanks in advance. Howard
When I initialized my Note 4 I created a new Dropbox account to get AT&T's 50GB for six months. My old account was associated with now expired Samsung promos and was down to 6GB. So here's what I (think) I did that got me not only the original 50GB/6 month promo but another 50GB/2 years added on top. This could be a pure fluke but maybe it'll help somebody here.
To claim the Samsung 50GB promo create a new account. Dropbox doesn't add or extend if you're on an existing promo so you should do that regardless. You'll get 50GB for six months after doing all the stupid "add a file, refer a friend, let us exploit you in any way possible" stuff Dropbox makes you do.
Change the e-mail address on your original (non-Note 4 related) account to one not in Dropbox's records. It's in "settings" on the Dropbox web page. It has to be real and accessible because Dropbox sends a verification e-mail to it.
Via the Dropbox website, change your Note 4 created account's e-mail address to your original (pre-Note 4) one (the one you just made available in step 2).
Sign out of the Dropbox app on your Note 4 and sign back in again with the re-named e-mail address.
I did that and got this. Remember, pre-Note 4 I had 6GB available.
Why do I have a feeling that simply login to your existing dropbox account would automatically award 50gb promo, just like it did 2 years ago with Note 2.
2 years ago I used my N2 to give 50gb dropbox to all my friends, all I had to do was wipe the dropbox app (or maybe reinstall it, don't recall, no couldn't reinstall it, because it was "system" app) and let them login to their accounts.

You missed the point of my post. I got two 50GB promos, the six months I'm entitled to plus twenty four months no one on ATT's entitled to.
And what the policy was two years ago was doesn't matter.

PC. I wasn't trying to scam the system, I just wanted to use the e-mail address on my pre-Note 4 Dropbox account. Changing the e-mail back to that one is what triggered the second 24 month promo. On my Note 4, I signed the account I created on the phone out of the Dropbox app. When I re-signed in with the one I switched the bonus e-mail (above) appeared in seconds. I'm more excited about the 2 year duration than the extra 50GB.
Awe mine doesn't work actually my +48 GB is just about to run out, too, from the original Note 2 deal but my Note 10.1 and Note 4 didn't add any time to the offer.
Try it out on the ones in store to see if you can add it. Then delete the account.

On a virgin Note 4 you can create a new account with an e-mail not associated with an account currently on any type of Samsung/Dropbox promo. Even if you have 1 day of an existing promo left, using an existing e-mail to initialize Dropbox on a phone will prevent additional promo storage from being added. I didn't want to take a chance with my previous account(s) which had expired Samsung/Dropbox promos on them which is why I initially (from my phone) created a brand new account.
If you create a brand new account with a floor model you can try changing e-mail addresses (via a PC) like I described above. That, not how I originally initialized the account, is what triggered the additional 50GB/24 months to be added to my account.
It's all rather bizarre. Especially the 24 month component which shouldn't have been applied because anything I did from my phone should have identified it to Dropbox as an AT&T Note 4 by its device ID. And seriously, why out of the four major carriers is AT&T the only one not offering 24 months? I guess it's for the same reason we don't get a headset in the box.
I couldn't seem to get this to work. I'm wondering if maybe the delay of 3 days had something to do with it. I'll wait a day or two and try again.

I didn't have any luck either. I did get the 2 year 50gb deal, but no dice on the 6 month part.
That's interesting - I got the opposite - I got the 6 month 50GB, but not the 2 year. Wierd.
Maybe it's because I have the T-Mobile variant.
So if I do what you say and add 50GB worth of stuff to my Dropbox account, what happens after the 6 months is over? Do they erase that stuff or will I still have access to it, but just can't upload anything else unless I start deleting stuff? I need to know because I don't want to lose anything after it expires.
They don't erase your stuff you won't be able to add anything more.

I heard about this unlimited OneDrive from different sources, yet I don't see anything about it on any official MS sites. I'm tempted to subscribe to the office personal edition so I can transfer all my Google Dive crap over.
The little bit I did bring over (to the free OneDrive) doesn't play nice with file names that include any hyphens "-". Anyone experiencing the same issues?
Only seem to be able to save to gmail or Google server. Can not save contacts to device.
They aren't saved on the phone and backed up on Google servers? That's weird.

Are you able to add a new contact and save it to device only ( save to your Pixel 2) and not Gmail account?
I've never tried. I love the fact that all my phone numbers come back every time I've reset or set up a new phone..
They must've deleted the option to save directly on a device with one of the major Android updates. Tapping add new contact makes me pick an account. I've never noticed it. I can say an old KitKat Note 2 does still have it available.

Do you have an option that allows you in settings to toggle off/on to add contacts to device or sync to Gmail? I filed a claim/complaint with Google about this and they say they wanted to send me a new device as I should be able to toggle off/on with contacts to not sync and add to device but I find this rather strange.

Galaxy S6 Edge and Samsung Note 4. iPhone 6s Plus also allows one to save to device instead of just iCloud. The Gmail and iCloud thing are fine but they should be an option and not a must to save a contact.

I wonder if it's a Google phone thing. My Nexus 5X didn't have an option that I can recall. Can't check anymore cause it died on me 2 weeks before I got my Pixel 2 XL. I'll check my wife's Note 5 later today.

you have an option to import or export contacts if you need.

Yes, do not want all my contacts and everything else synced to a cloud server. When one pays $1000 for a smartphone why can't one place all their contacts and everything else on their device without being required to sync to a cloud server and sync all private info with Google's servers. All other smartphones allow one to save to device.

I can completely understand your point of view now.
Thanks for clarifying.
As far as trying to keep it on the device.
I would check your google account and make sure that "Contacts" is not synced and see if that will resolve you not having to save your contacts on the phone.
Please let me know if that helps cause i would like to know if that actually works that way.
Thanks.
There has to be a bug here with this device or Google did this on purpose. Prior to logging on we have option to save to device but once you log on then you can no longer save to device. WTF..? Google sent me a new Pixel 2 XL and new device has same problem.
This is the email I got from Google. On a side note this site here at XDA has been a pain in the A S S to use on my smartphone due to all the ads. Whole screen is filled with advertisements popping up and opening up as well.

I also think it is done on purpose. Just got a reply from Google Support. Followed their instructions but still does not work.
Looks like they now realize that one can not save a contact to the device. $1000 for a smartphone that can not and does now allow its users to save new contacts to device. New you can but the minute you sign in to Gmail or Google Maps you lose that option of saving new contact to device.
Why does Google block purposely this option..?

Because they want you to be using their cloud services. Or at least some kind of cloud backup. Majority of people want the convenience of not having to manually sync, enter, export/import contacts, or have to post a "Lost my phone and contacts. DM your numbers please."

For those that want that option they can choose to save contact to gmail instead of device. On all other devices one has the choice whether to save to device or Gmail. The same goes with Apple phone where contacts are saved to device and if you turn on iCloud backup then everything is backed up to the cloud. The option should be the end users and not theirs to make.
After making the switch to my 1st Nexus device years ago (Galaxy Nexus), I noticed this same thing. I actually prefer the convenience of having them synced to my Google account. That way, if I don't have my phone on me for some reason, I can still look up a contact on a computer if necessary.
Hi, I'm new to G-Suite, Android work profile, and using a second account on my phone. I can sign into Chrome with either account on my laptop, and I can see my work profile on my phone. I can sign into G-Mail on my phone with both accounts too. But when I go to Chrome on my phone, and click on my photo, it doesn't show the other account.
Can you access Chrome with the work profile? Do I need another app for G-Suite? I'm clueless! Thanks in advance
It's an old Google problem when using multiple accounts on the same device. I'm working on game development and I can tell you that's a hell and the only solution found was to work with different phones using only one account for each. Like one phone/account for dev, another phone/account for dev for testing and so on, especially during the google development communities era. As well I have to use the GSuite recently, but it's impossible on device unless you use only the gsuite account and remove your personal one. Didn't find a solution to make it work with at least 2 accounts...
