Question regarding the Bluetooth stack

So I just bought a new car and was all excited to finally have a hands free system. I live in a place that requires them.
Of course, my Epic4G (ACS 1.1.1) craps all over itself after the first phone call ends. I get high battery usage, slow phone, and the connection between the phone and my car is gone (even though neither device seems to realize this).
Anyway, my few hours of research has led me to the conclusion that it is the bluetooth stack on my phone, not the car, causing the problem.
Is there a ROM that swaps out the bluetooth stack with one that is functional? Is there a way for ME to do this? Should I just buy another phone?
Thanks!

Mirror your smarphone to a car head unit

Well, I don't know if everybody here knows that, but I didn't and I thought it would be cool to share it, since its a good idea. I mean, its the perfect idea that I had to connect car and phone together.
Mimics lets you mirror AND control your smarphone into a head car unit.
it costs ~200$-600$ depending on what you want
watch?v=633Kn4XkmJA&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL
so the arc isn't listed on the compatible phones, they said that any smarphone with hdmi out should work with the unit
have not tried it yet, its avaiable for pre-order, but for now cuz my car doesnt deserve something like that, hopefully i'm changing car next summer and then I'll bought it for sure
well, the video can explain more than me, i'm tired and as you can see my english isnt very great so I'll let you see the video to understand.

Android head unit: Access CANbus?

Hey,
Just got this android head unit then. Can't post links but its amazon dot co dot uk forward slash "gp/product/B0126T6O1G"
Pretty sick, I noticed in the 'Installed Apps' there is a system app called CANbus. I know the radio connects to the car's CANbus because there is a box behind the head unit as part of the ISO adapter, and it supports the steering wheel keys and stuff.
Wondering if it would be possible to get access to this interface through a custom app to control other things in the car. Eg lights, windows, etc.
I know I should be able to root it, I have read in forums it is possible just not tried it yet - need to check the build number.
It may just be for the steering wheel controls, maybe the box filters out the unneccesary ones or it only supports CAN for the steering wheel controls, but I am kinda interested to see what else could be done.
Did you get anywhere with this? I'd also be interested in the same thing. I'm planning to get a similar headunit.

Hi mate,
No I didn't really. I wasn't really sure how to go about it - apparently you can root some of the units (not sure if this one is included) but I didn't want to risk bricking a £280 head unit. And honestly if I were you I wouldn't bother buying the head unit at all either after having it for a while, here's why:
It takes about 30 seconds to boot each time which is a bit annoying if you just wanna get tunes on and drive off
The bluetooth quality is shocking, it sounds like you're on the phone to someone on a ****ty handsfree and drops out when you're playing tunes. Also doesn't support song information or album art over Bluetooth which is stupid.
The radio quality is **** and it forgets the stations if it's been off for a while - auto-seek doesn't really work very well either.
And the worst of all? After having it for about 9 months, I think the amp inside is basically fried. It cuts out randomly when driving or goes really quiet and crackly. I'm probably gonna sell it and just get a normal, non-android aftermarket unit so I can use my sub and all but otherwise it's definitely not worth what I spent on it. It feels like cheap Chinese knock off crap, which I kinda sussed before buying it anyway. But for real if I'd have known I'd have *steered* clear.
I mean yeah it's cool, but not 280 quid cool.
With regards to the CAN bus, the main thing I wanted to do was connect it up to the LED lights I have in the footwells and air vents, so it comes on with the rest of the car's lights. I did have some success with this by splicing one of the cables (I think it was orange?) from the CAN bus decoder box it comes with and connecting to a transistor. I guess you could splice different cables for different things, but it obviously isn't as great a solution as having a proper CAN bus interface. I'd recommend getting an Arduino and a CAN shield instead since this is going to be way more flexible for whatever it is you wanna do.
Hope this helps and let me know if you end up getting anywhere with your CAN hacking!

Joying 2GB RAM 8 inch - installed with pics

Hey guys,
Not sure if i'm the first on this forum to receive my joying 8inch head unit but i got it last friday and installed it the same day. This thing is awesome.
I've never had an android head unit but i've been hovering around these forums for about 2 months waiting for a 2gb unit to come out. I got on the new joying unit right when it came out and purchased it on amazon right away. Their customer service was awesome, they made sure i had the tools needed to install it before they shipped it out (which i did). and it still only took 4 days to get to me (central USA).
Coming from a $600 pioneer head unit i could not be happier. This is awesome. If you guys would like some more pics, or information feel free to post here or email me at [email protected]. Also i am the only one to have a review on amazon so far
Won't let me put images cause i'm still new to posting.. so here is the URL broken up

Installed steering wheel controls. It was not to bad, would of only taken a few minutes if i would of known what to do. I own a Subaru WRX 2010. I had to wire Key 2 to Pin #4 and Pin #14 to ground.
You will have a car crash soon...
When you keep driving and taking/posting fotos (of your android radio) and fidling arround.
But thanks for the first impression. Looks like they changed the equalizer software from the fake 9 to a honest 3-Band EQ.
Anything about the Audio Quality?
Greetings

Seems good. better then the previous aftermarket radio i had in the car.
Also I did not make the post while driving.
Will you be rooting the device anytime soon? Any bluetooth issues with regards to connecting multiple devices/call quality? any problems with the mic?

Not sure if i need to root it as everything i want i think i can get without. i'm open to hearing arguements about why i should root it though.
I have not tested out multiple devices on the bluetooth, i can do that later today. I have not tested the Mic as i do not make phone calls often. The microphone it came with seems to be almost identical to the one that came with my pioneer, just like a $6 mic you can get on amazon.

Thanks. If you do end up testing the mic, please let us know!
@ AeonSaber:
please can you post a pitcure about your system information with the MCU version and show me the url about your purchase?
Interested in the mic quality also. Will be installing mine in a F150 with the factory sync system and hoping the mic quality is on par.
Question about the subwoofer settings on these units, are there any you can adjust like low-pass filter and/or cutoff frequencies and stuff?

I just installed an 8" in my Prius Plug-in, I couldn't get the steering wheel control and backup camera to work after 2 days of messing with it. So I took it to Best Buy to get that working. Tech support at Joying sucks and it takes 24 hours to get a reply from them.
Bluetooth connects to the phone, but music doesn't play, fm reception sucks, and it won't read my 128gig sdcard. I haven't had a chance to really get into it yet, but I will when I get it back from Best Buy and I'll repost then with a full report.

The FM reception is fine in my car, that is weird that it is not going well for you, maybe you could give the antenna more power. To get the 128gb sd card to work i had to put it in my phone first, my phone formatted it correctly for android, then i threw it into my radio. If you'd like some help with other things i am more than happy if you email me.
Also their customer support has been good to me so far, yes it takes a while for them to reply because their business hours are when we are sleeping. lol
I'm not crazy about the 8"+ units because they look like a tablet duct taped to the dashboard. The DDIN 7" all-glass units are supposed to be available soon. It would be nice if they'd increase the screen size on the DDIN units, there is enough bezel to increase to at LEAST 7.5, maybe even 8". You certainly don't need the row of capacitive buttons on Android, since they're just duplicated from on-screen buttons anyway!

Did you end up testing the multiple bt connection ? Like with a phone and an obd2?
Is the microphone 'visible' to Android on these? Ie, can you use voice commands ('Ok google'), etc?
I can't believe I'm considering going back down this road, but my Newsmy Android box bit the dust (head unit part is OK), and I don't have the time or energy to really push my DIY project.

I did not get around to trying this out. i did try to pair my ODB adapter and gave up after 5 secconds, was going to google it as this is my first android radio. Did not try out multiple phones. I will try to remember to do the ODB after work today but no promises.

I have not tried it. i'm new to android head units so i do not know where i would start that functionality.

Quickest thing to do would probably bring up some app (sound recorder?) that can use the MIC and see if it works. Google Maps, Google Search, etc.
I'm not familiar with the MTC series, but almost all of the android head units utilize an 'MCU' (in this case made my microntek) to control the analog audio sources, and mixes in the digital (Android) audio. That analog audio is typically not 'visible' to android (ie, you cannot record FM radio as the Android board only controls the operation of the radio through the MCU. It doesn't actually run that audio through an ADC back to Android.).
In most of the devices I've seen, the MIC port is wired to the Bluetooth HFP module, which is not actually part of the Android board. It's one of those 'analog sources' that the Android box can control through MCU commands, but the underlying I/O is invisible to the system.
How sturdy is it? I have a double din opening that is a little to small and would need to be trimmed to fit. I was thinking since the single din would be completely covered by the larger screen, I wouldn't need to modify the opening. Does it move when using it? I won't be able to stand it if it moves around or makes any rattle sounds. Thanks in advance for your input.

Seems sturdy. the screen mounts on 4 points to the single din, they are fully adjustable. It does not move at all when i touch it.
Where did you order your unit from? Amazon or directly from Joying? I would rather order through amazon for the better customer service but if they aren't shipping until the end of nov/beginning of dec I would order through Joying to receive it sooner.

Yet another android tablet as a head unit

Hi,
I'd like to introduce my project...
I'm building a vintage kit car using the BMW Z3 (2000 model year) as the base car. I want the car to have access to tech but for the tech to be hidden in the centre console, actually on the underside of the top of the console. The concept is that when no tech is needed (for example at shows) the car will retain its vintage looks but when tech is required (i.e. when being driven) the tech becomes available. I'm imagining a top section of the console which will hinge up and reveal the tablet. There isn't going to be much space on the underside of the console which is why I'm going for a tablet rather than one of the many Chinese android units.
As an aside, I've just ordered an Icebox Octa core 64G Rom / 4G Ram unit (TTF1983 ) for my facelift (2015) Vauxhall Insignia which I expect to arrive in the next week or so.
I've already researched other people's projects which has helped me to get to where I currently am. Where I currently am is ordering many of the bits and pieces which I expect to need.
My tablet project is intended to be a much simpler affair than the Icebox unit:
DAB and FM radio
Rear and, hopefully, front camera
Sat nav
OBD II
Mirror my phone if needs be
What I won't need includes:
Steering wheel controls
Air con management
Electric roof control
Pretty much everything else that an android head unit offers
What I might need is:
BT Phone but in a convertible that's going to be a bit of an issue any way
Because the car will only be used sporadically I need an effective power management system, one which will kick in after perhaps a month's lack of use.
My tablet of choice is a Galaxy Tab S 10.5 (SM-T800) which I happen to have lying around, it's currently running stock Android 6.01 . The tablet is a wifi model so the plan is to hotspot it to my Galaxy S8 when I'm on the road
I've already ordered
a 12V to 5V 3A dc-dc converter
a 4 port USB2 hub
an OTG Y cable to take power from the dc-dc converter to feed the tablet and to move data between the devices
an easycap UTV007 video capture device (for the parking camera units)
a USB to USB relay to allow the easycap to feed the video through to the USB when reverse is connected
an 'intelligent' video selector which has two video inputs (front and rear cameras) and one video output (to the head unit via the USB relay). The unit keeps the relevant camera connected to the output. I need to take delivery of this and play with it to see what it can really do.
an ELM327 bluetooth OBD II device
a NooElec Smart DVB+ device
a Creative Soundblaster DAC
I know that I'm going to need a decent amplifier between the DAC and the speakers (suggestions and recommendations welcome). I might also want a manual volume control, possibly with a push button mute facility. I've probably missed a bunch of stuff...
I've rooted the tablet and tweaked it (overwritten lpm) so that when the ignition is switched on then the tablet will boot. I've used MacroDroid to tell the device to switch off 10 seconds after the ignition is switched off (unless the ignition gets switched on again within those 10 seconds)
I'm looking very closely at the Agama Car Launcher to pull much of it together. There are some aspects of this launcher that I'd like to see improved. For example I'd like to be able to get back to the home screen from the maps screen (or other screens) CarWebGuru places a button on the screen to allow this. It would be nice also to have a split screen so that I can have maps on one side and Audio / OBD / any other app on the other side. I'm aware that I might not get all that I wish for
One thing I'd REALLY like to see improved is the cold boot time which is currently 50 seconds. I might consider a custom ROM if anyone knows of a ROM that will fire up quickly, or any other tweak which will significantly shorten the cold boot time. 10 seconds or less would be nice. I've looked at Cyanogenmod 12.1 or 13 with the quick boot utility but I understand that the quick boot is basically hibernate and may not survive a month without the ignition being switched on.
Hopefully I've given a reasonable overview of what I'm looking to achieve and hopefully there will be people out there that can help tie everything together and troubleshoot when the time comes.
Russell
nice project, good luck with it..
Keep us posted on your project progress...
Wondering how this is coming along?
My question for you is, will the tablet charge and use data via the OTG cable simultaneously? Did you need to run a custom kernel to enable that?
thanks.
Quite in consonance with what I've been wanting to achieve. Nevertheless, the plan was frustrated by other priorities. Would love to see how this emerges. Meanwhile here's a basic experiment I've tried.
