I have a lg g3 (verizon) with 5.0.1 rooted. Is it safe to update to 5.1.1? Has anyone tried? I want to but im afraid it'll break my root completely or my phone will brick. I can't lose my root because ill lose a lot of features. So if someone has tried or is willing to try that'd be awesome!
Same boat. I'll be watching this for an answer.

Reflash stock recovery and you should be fine
OTA usually removes root. You can reroot it after you install the OTA
No update for the d855 or other versions ?!

I have the Verizon G3 with 5.01. The 35B OTA wouldn't even install until I restored the factory image.

Well I recommend a clean TOT or KDZ flash. Hope this will fix your problem. Please do follow this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2785089 to flash TOT or KDZ then update via OTA. Thanks!
DO NOT TAKE THE UPDATE
...if you want root, etc. Currently there is no way to root 35b and no way to roll back to an earlier version. They patched some things up it seems.
Some brave souls took the update and are stuck now... http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...-5-1-1-ota-t3220693/post63200915#post63200915
Freeze with tibu (or delete) the system update apk to stop the notification.

I just update my rooted 5.0.1 VS985 to 5.1.1, gotta say , this new system is more battery save. i turn on the music and LG health and mobile data when i took exercise tonight for about 2 hours, and it's only cost 3% of the battery.and you know, lots of useless Verizon apps and others, but it's fine, i can disable it in app manager.
Yea I noticed that with this new update as well.
I'm little sour about being in un-rooted state.
But the battery life is noticeably better.
Maybe this option was there but I noticed new options under the developer setting where you can restrict amount of background apps running. I believe this helps out a lot as well.
Just an update on the update...
On vs985 it looks like someone was able to successfully TOT back from the 35B update, so people shouldn't be stuck anymore if they took the OTA(see post 84 here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...ing-takethe-vs98535b-5-1-1-ota-t3220693/page9). Root is still not available for people who took the 35B OTA yet, but there are 2 stock based rooted 35B ROMs available now: Jasmine and Skydragon. I think the only thing that isn't functional is advanced calling because we can only use the 24b modem with the 35b ROM due to the 12b bootloaders we have that allow us to have TWRP...or something like that. So it'll be a 35b ROM and all it's updated glory - running a 24b modem.

SO I am pretty new to the lg family coming from galaxy since the first one. but I am curious since I am still on the 10b firmware and don't want to update. if later in time they release something that unlocks the bootloader on 11a can I update using the kdz method even if Verizon releases a newer method than even 11a? sorry if this is confusing.
My suggestion would be to just root and get on the same firmware that everyone else is. You never know if something will come out blocking the ability to kdz but it's up to you
Sent from my VS986 using Tapatalk
Yeah i thought about it but what if they only find a way to unlock the bootloader on 10b. I screwed myself with the galaxy s4 with taking a system update. So now im extra cautions. But i am debating doing thhe update and if i do should i do the kdz or the ota method by verizon.
Sent from my VS986
I saw someone on the other forum that uploaded the 10b kdz file to have them root that one maybe just wait for that file to be rooted if you don't want to go to 11a. Personally I think they are going to use 11a if they find a bootloader unlock because that is the rooted firmware they put out in the first place.
Sent from my VS986 using Tapatalk
Yeah i also thought about that because i thought i remember someone saying it auto updated and they posted about not being able to roll back. But ill see if they root 10b within a day or 2 ill go that route if not ill update and do it the 11a route. I already downloaded everything for the 11a root but kinda am kickin my feet
Sent from my VS986
Hold tight, devs just got a 10b system image. We should see 10b rooted in the next day or two. I'm in the same boat, don't want to upgrade yet. I have a feeling we will see a bootloader work around rather than a full unlock.
Sent from my VS986 using Tapatalk
Sounds good and im completely happy with a work around. My s4 i had to use safestrap. But yeah thanks guys for all the help.

Keep on 10b and if you do update do the manual way, Verizon update could potentially be an even newer one that just released and no one knew about yet, always do manual if possible in my opinion. Either way as everyone else suggested keep on 10b and wait for a root file for it which they said any day now.
Does anyone here kno how to save and also make a stock img from my phone. Im new to this and would like to kno how to proper have a back up and think it would be safe to have to stored when i do my root. Thanks in advance.

Just got my D851 with stock 5.0.1 preinstalled.
Its telling me to update the phone.
Has anyone updated via the air method?
Not sure what it is but wanted to be sure if its MM or 5.1.1 before I moved forward

As a rule of thumb if you plan to root, you should NEVER update. Updating will usually patch any exploits the devs use to root our phones. It depends on what you want to do with your phone down the line.... Update at your own risk.
@tiguy99, also it's definitely not MM. I'm not even sure 5.1.1 was ever released either.
I know the D851 has been unlocked from the get-go (didn't need bumping like the others in the past) but as the previous post alluded to, the OTA just might lock it down. Be sure and be careful.

Sorry, my post was not helpful. Here is something you can do: long press on the update notification and click on the "info" icon and disable the notification. This way you are less likely to accidentally update, and it won't bother you as much.

If it is a stock D851 running on Tmo, then the update is probably the recent update of 20e (released back on June 9) to 20g (released back in October). There has been a lot of that just within the last 60 days. However, it is still Android 5.0.1. Tmo has NOT upgraded our G3 to anything beyond 5.0.1 yet, but has committed to updating us to Marshmallow Android 6, probably sometime in the next 3 months.
As for the update, all 20g did was patch the Stagefright vulnerability that had been discovered back in August. That was a vulnerability in Lollipop wordwide on all carriers. Look at your phone info under settings. If you are on 20e, it will not hurt at all to upgrade. But in any case, the update you are seeing is DEFINITELY NOT 5.1.1 and it is DEFINITELY NOT Marshmallow. It is still 5.0.1. Good luck.
Please hit the THANKS button if I helped you.
I got mine week ago and updated it didn't root but used Newest Root Method in general section and finally got it.

That being said, I made the mistake of updating. Now I'm having a very hard time trying to root my D851 20g. Can I restore to Kitkat for the purpose of rooting?
Dude this is the wrong forum for a question like this. Should be in Q&A or General. You'll get better answers there.

No need. Google 'Newest root method' D851 xda download file thru your browser double click on windows batch file. Follow prompts. Hope this helps you out.
I too got my D851 last week. It had KK 4.2.2 and wanted to update. So I decided to go ahead and do the OTA. The final result was 5.0.1 D85120g. I don't think there are any higher updates yet. Rooted without issue using Newest Root Method mentioned above, again, without issue.

However, if you are still unsure, you can always downgrade to a lower version. You will have to do a search for D85110r in the KDZ file version and find the loader for that file. Took me a little time to find it but I have both the KDZ file and loader.

OK,seems I continue to post in the incorrect section so I"l try this again..recently my vs985 lg4 thru ota update was upgraded from 5.1 to 6.0- my questions are ,,, does kingroot work on the 6.0, I know it works on 5.1 as I previously had it rooted.and 2nd question is I'm having terrible battery life even with greenify working and the built in doze,is that a common problem..I didn't want to even try kingroot without asking first...thanks and hopefully I'm in the proper thread,section....
Nope, i've tried but no root for Android M for the LG G4. You'll have to go back to Lolipop
OK,not what I was hoping for, next question,do I just do a factory reset or does that not rest back to 5.1, as I originally had 5.1 but ota updates brought it to Mm..I truly do not like MM as battery life has been cut in half...

You have a VS986, not VS985.
A factory reset will put you back to Marshmallow.
You will need to use LGUP PC tool to flash your phone back to Lollipop using the 13B KDZ file.
Thanks, thts something way out of my league, got to look that up and read into how to do that without messing up,if I had known MM was soo bad with battery life I would never had done the upgrade, very glad I've found xda forum..next question does it matter if I have an lg3 or lg4? or is MM that difficult to root,i know its new upgrade but I can tell you personally that without root MM is terrible with battery life,my vs985 was great rooted on 5.1...and I thank this group VERY much for the advice I am getting...

Do a factory reset... Will help with battery life.
After any large update you should factory reset. Cleans up old files "basically corrupt files" not needed for the new OS.
Thank you...
Yeah, i should go back to Lolipop soon cause the default Launcher is not good for me. I want Z-Launcher https://www.zlauncher.com/ I also want all the bloatware gone

About the battery life it could be that the verizon apps are draining the battery, when i bought my phone i totally freak out becasuse it didnt last not even 8 hours, try to good to app manager settings and disable all verizon apps as well the NFL app that why solf your issue. At leats for me was the answer.
Yes your definitely correct, since my it a from 5.1 to 6.0 I've been eliminating unnecessary apps trying to solve my issue, several apps I need root and now that I am 6.0 that's been impossible, but ice eliminated a lot..

You dont need Root. you permanetly disable them just go to:
1) Setting
2) App Manager and localize the aplications of verizon and
3) Select one, later clic on disable (or Deactivate)
I'm tired of the problems and struggle I've had attempting to use my rooted G4. I'm currently on 13b rooted and it's been giving me problems. It randomly reboots and doesn't start up at times. And it's so sluggish. I've gotten a replacement because I flashed the wrong kdz. I just want my phone to work without all these problems. I just want to get to the stock Verizon MM for my G4. Is this possible?
You should be able to flash the MM kdz - they can be found here in the general section. Be sure to verify it is the correct kdz.
Keep in mind once you go to MM you won't be able to achieve root without downgrading back to LP. I think there is a downgrade thread here in general as well if you need it.

Thank you I just downloaded the KDZ and flashed via LG UP. It installed without any problems. I'm aware that you can't root on MM, I'm ok with that. I need a break from rooting after all of this. Thank you I appreciate it!
Glad to see someone here not happy with rooting the G4. I don't find it worth the risk or the benefits worth it without the ability to flash custom roms. I've never rooted a phone without there being a way to install a custom recovery.
For anyone interested, The Android Central podcast discussed the topic of rooting and flashing roms a bit on their most recent episode. Most of them agreed that there isn't as much of a need anymore to root and flash roms and that it's kind of died down a bit. Features that people used to have to root their phones for are now available on most stock roms.

i know at the end of the video it says close the app, but dont, just start it and you be upgraded to MM in no time just make sure upgrade is checked
if you want to start fresh, then you can just do what my video says to get refurbished checked
if you upgrade with a rooted rom you have to factory reset your phone inorder for MM to boot

This thread will tell you how to downgrade from MM to LP. It works. I had the same problem you did.
Yep, That worked for me. You need to "return to stock" like post above and downgrade the firmware. Use the 13b firmware stock, so you can just flash over it with the 13b rooted file. Easiest way i found. And That is the program that MUST be used. The other way WILL fail every time.
We just need a UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER so we can custom recovery like TWRP and start flashing ROMS!
