[Q] Dead/Dying power button

Hello,
Has anyone else with a GSM Galaxy Nexus got a problem where the power button not responding?
Noticed it once or twice a week after buying the device but it's gradually getting worse to the point where I have to keep tapping the button until it wakes up/sleeps or powers on.
Contacted O2 today who confirmed that it is a mechanical fault and are taking it off me for a repair/replace.
I was just curious as to if anyone else has had this problem with their GN?

I'm interested to see if more people have this problem. The Nexus One had plenty of issues with the power button and I had to send my in for repair twice. I really hope the Galaxy Nexus can avoid this.

please dont say this problem is back. this is the first i've heard of this issue with the galaxy nexus. but the nexus one certainly had power button failures all over the place.

Well, the courier picked up my handset just now.
I should have it back by Thursday.
I never had this problem with my Nexus One, although I previously had a Galaxy S2 which the home button went iffy after 6 months of usage.
It's a shame, as the GN is a really good device. I miss it already!

Okay, update on situation.
O2 had lost my phone somewhere (translation: either someone at o2, or the courier fancied the look of the GNex and wanted it for themselves).
After countless arguments with o2, and being fobbed off during each call, I finally got through tok someone who was very helpful and has placed an order for me for a new handset. To be delivered tomorrow.
So, fingers crossed this handset wont have the same problem. I miss my GNex (and Android), having been using a dumbphone for the last week or so.

Some simple solutions to save your power button.
1) Use Widgetlocker or a custom ROM that allows wake when pressing the volume keys or other hardware buttons.
2) Use a widget like Extended Controls that will allow you to lock the phone with a tap of the screen or pull down notification like TapTap app.
Saved my notoriously week power button on my HTC Incredible and now my brand spankin' new GN.

I've had the GNex for about a month now, and not had any power button issues. Perhaps it was an issue with your specific (now lost) device.

I have this problem too. For me, the power button always works but only if I press it right in the middle with more pressure than usual. It started 2 weeks after I got my nexus and it's getting worth.
For now, I'm using the volume wake feature of aokp. I might bug my career about it later (I have to relock my bootloader). Do you guys think they'll give me a new phone right away? I don't wanna live without my phone for 2 weeks.

Happens to me to every now and then my power button decides not to respond so I have to battery pull to get it to work

See that button on the bottom left of my screen? Its called "screen off and on" free in market! This app plus volume wake is awesome! I'm very ocd about my power button!

After owning a Nexus One which had a power button issue and seeing my friend's Nexus S going through the same problem, I'm a bit worried that it will happen to my Gnex, especially after spending so much $ on it. The power button doesn't feel as sturdy as I would like. Are there any apps for ICS/Gnex which can change the unlock button to the volume rockers?
Anyone else worried about that? Or am I just freaking out in advance?

This is the first time I'm seeing it posted but I think my power button is going bad.
Its not bad yet but certainly feels like its getting worse.
About ten times a day I need to repress it cause it didn't work.
I have a case too which could make it harder but its still exposed so its not that I'm missing it.
Had me super worried at first.

I don't have this problem, but my Captivate did. I used screen off and lock. I keeps your phone from fully locking allowing volume buttons to wake the screen. I also used SGS button remapper to remap the buttons, but I don't think it would work on the GNex.

YES. Have been thinking about this for weeks now. My OG had to be put down be cause the power button completely broke. Since then I am a little snake bitten with my nexus. I actually find myself pressing and depressing more often just to see if it is getting worse.

Yeap, already done a few versions back..

I have noticed sometimes the phone doesn't always respond to power button presses. It can take two or three times. It scares me sometimes, not gonna lie. I wanna believe it's just my gel case but...

Try pressing the button right in the middle. I noticed that you sometimes do not depress deep enough for the "click" to register when you hit it too far to the sides. The upside is of course that it's harder to press the button by mistake too.

I think you're freaking out about the power button not working.
Alternatively, like what others say you can get AOKP and do it with volume rocker to turn the phone screen on.
Or get a case with reinforced buttons (they make it easier to press).

We are not including volume wake in our rom. We got a resounding HELL NO when we asked folks if they wanted it. The power button is just as sturdy as the volume. If its going to break, extra stress will do the same to volume as well.

The nexus one button failure has no relation since its a completely different manufacturer using different cluck mechanism etc. So really this thread is about power button failure in general. I think it will be fine.

But at least you have the option of pressing 3 buttons to wake the phone instead of 1. That alone cuts down the chances of it failing by approximately 67% right?

Are you going to consciously alternate using each one at different times?

The thought never entered my mind. These are expensive devices and if there's a manufacturer defect then I'll simply take it back. Having said that, I've never had a hardware issue with any of my Android devices, no dust under the screen or anything weird. But if I did, I'd take it back immediately.

Would be nice to have the option in the menu, but leave the default to off but allow users to enable it as they please. I subconsciously think about this as well, perhaps because the button is so small it does not install much confidence in me.
That's one of the things I miss on my SG2 is the front centre home button as an extra option aside from the power button to wake the phone.
Perhaps down the road they'll manufacture smartphones with capacitative power and volume "buttons" as well?

This would suck. I had the power button break on my nexus s and I baby all my phones. I'll be depressed if my $600 phone breaks for no reason.

I only heard one person personally and none on here that suffered from the power button issue. From what I heard the nexus one was more prone to it. I had 3 nexus ones and never had that issue. Also with this device I noticed that my button is keeping its springyness. Especially with the new touch recovery. I don't really have a reason to use the power button.

[Q] HTC One X reboots every 5 seconds

Hi guys.
My brother gave me his HTC One X which he bought 2nd hand a couple of months ago.
A few days ago this problem occurred out of the blue. The battery is completely drained, and any time it's plugged into a power source (PC or AC adapter) the phone turns on for a few seconds, then dies. The red LED light is on during this period This process repeats over and over until the power is disconnected. I've included a video of the process here:
If I hold the volume down button, I can get into the HBOOT menu, but no matter what I press it stays at the screen in the below pic, and the phone turns off after a few seconds anyway.

Unfortunately I can't do anything in this screen, not even cycle through the options, and the phone reboots in a couple of seconds anyway.
I left the phone plugged in all night last night hoping that a charge could build up slowly so I could do something, but unfortunately it didn't make a difference.
If there's anyone out there that could help me with this I'd really appreciate it. I don't know if it's been modified or anything, my brother said he never touched it but didn't know whether it was modified beforehand or not. I've a suspicion myself that it's a hardware fault, hopefully it's something as small as a bad battery. What do you guys think? Much appreciated.

Download this go in bootloader and run the ChargeONEX.bat from cmd . Report back

Hi, thanks for your response.
when I run ChargeONEX.bat, it gets stuck on <waiting for device> because the phone won't stay on long enough to do anything. It just turns off after about 3 seconds.
If I'm doing something wrong please set me straight!

No in this case you can't do enything else. Try to hold down power button for longf time and see what will hapend. Try to go again in bootloader.
And you see only this Waithing for device?

I've tried doing this and unfortunately nothing different happened.

Phone turns off before booting

I was using my phone this morning, then the screen turned off after I left it idle. Tried to turn it back on and got the Sprint logo and then the Samsung logo shortly after, and then it would turn off.
I tried power + home + vol-down, and shortly after that screen comes up it turns off again.
Do I just have a bad battery? I'm using the Gorilla Gadgets extended battery, but I'm at work and don't have access to my original. I also noticed that if I plug in the charger, the charging light doesn't come on.
Anything else I can try?

I don't doubt you at all, I just managed to confirm it. After slapping it around for a bit I finally got it to go to my home screen, then shortly after the "power off" menu came up, similar as to if I was holding down the power button and off it went.

I actually saw a video of someone flicking the power switch area with their fingers, I did that and managed to get the phone turned on, and have made sure to not touch the power button since then by installing a "screen off" app and it's been on this whole time. I'm guessing this is just a temporary fix and eventually it'll turn off again w/out me touching the power button?

Is there a special method to take out that little brown piece? I'm using a small needle and it looks like it's made of hard plastic and completely wedged in there :\

When you're looking at the button which is obviously in the middle of the switch look at that Brown cardboard looking material... directly behind the button in that cardboard area use a very small flat head after you've used that needle or pin then dig out enough of it, so you can stick your screwdriver behind the button and it'll pop right out.

Is it "A" or "B" that I'm trying to pop out? It still looks brand new in person, but the lighting and camera show every little scratch I've caused by prying at it with a needle.

This was initially referred to as Sudden Death Syndrome... don't waste your money and buy a new battery, I assure you that's not it.

If anyone takes this advice PLEASE be sure to test with a multimeter to be sure this is the problem. I don't even know if the multimeter test will tell you anything (I'm no electrician) but this advice will permanently disable your phone. I was recently having a problem with my phone restarting and Jessooca guaranteed me that the problem was the power button.
The problem wasn't the power button. The problem was corrupt data/cache in one of my apps. Clearing the data/cache fixed the problem.
I just don't see how someone can make guarantees and be 99.909% sure of anything. Every problem can be caused multiple ways.
A few months ago I had a problem with my phone failing to startup and in that case it WAS the battery. So that's two different times I have personally experienced boot up/shutdown problems that were not related to the power button. It's just crazy to make guarantees and say you are 99.99% sure about anything without any troubleshooting. Especially for a problem like this that can have multiple causes.

I know I'm late on this thread, but just in case others come here looking for advice on how to fix their power button. I have fixed many of these by soldering on new buttons, and it's a pretty easy fix if you are good at soldering and have a good microscope. What's not an easy fix is trying to replace all those little tiny resistors and capacitors soldered on right next to the power button. They're about the size of a grain of sand, and although I usually can get them replaced and make the phone work, it takes much longer, so be careful if you're going to attempt any kind of diy repair!
I would also say that the only way I've personally gotten these power buttons to work other than replacing them is by cleaning them and lubricating them. A good electronic contact cleaner/lubricant works best, but acetone followed by WD40 works pretty well. Just saturate them with the cleaner and click them a bunch of times to work the cleaner in... then do the same thing with the lubricant. Doesn't always work, but it's unlikely to make the problem worse, and if you it doesn't work you can send it to me to fix!

How do I use the Moto 360? Is it usable in any way?

This may sound like a stupid question but I bought this watch a day ago and I still can't find a way to use it. It's ridiculous.
At first it won't power on as per instruction provided in the package. So I let it charge and it powered on automatically only to start discharging while charging. Then it turned off because it discharged on the charged... Somehow I managed to charge it by manually powering off the watch every few minutes.
So then I paired it with the phone and 15 mins later it got unpaired. I found out I can't pair it again - I must reset. Eventually it paired again, however it kept discharging while on the charging station. I turned airplane mode on, then I turn it off and eventually it charged. Then I immediately initiated the the firmware update to download and somehow I was able to update. So now it charges and discharges fine.
I've never in my life have seen any device be so hard to setup and get going - and I'm an engineer - I can only imagine how normal users keep returning those because they are not usable.
Sorry for the long post but back to my stupid question. How do you guys use this watch. It is totally unusable.
1) I can't use any apps. I'd say "Ok google, show me my steps.". The app will load I'll swipe to see the next screen and in less then 2-3 sec the screen turns off.
2)I tried "Ok goolge send an em..." and the screen turns off. I tried again "Ok google send an email". It asks to whom and while I speak the name - the screen turns off.
Why is ti turning off while I'm in the middle of answering a questions? I tried and tried - I was unable to use anything.
I tried the navigation while driving - very bad idea - I almost crashed my car. It will show me the direction like- go left on whatever and then turns off immediately. I look at the watch again - but no more directions - it don't care that I want direction...
I'd appreciate some tips from users that had the watch for a longer time.

The fact that you are unable to charge it as expected tells me that you have a defective device. Get it exchanged now. Don't bother trying to figure out why you can't set it up or use an app etc.

Yeah. I should have read the other threads before posting. I'm going to return it to BestBuy for a refund today.
I wonder if I should claim it's defective or that I simply can't understand how to use it and don't want/like it anymore?

I you just bought it, tell them it don't work and exchange for a new one. Otherwise, you're just causing problems for somebody else if they shelf it for resale again. There's a reason they have exchange/refund policies.

Yep - returned it as broken
I didn't get a replacement - I'm afraid it'll have the same issues. Feels like it was a software bug so I'm not taking more chances. Perhaps it doesn't work well with Android 5.1 yet.
I'll wait for a newer model.

What phone were you using?

Mine lasts for days and days, I have found that some watchfaces can take a chunk out of my battery.
But if its not turning on and you have reset it the exchange it or get a refund. I can't live without mine, so useful and handy. Besides it looks good ?

I do not think you know what you're talking about OP. But I do agree your device had to be defective, which does suck.

It's broken, I doubt the other replacements will do the same thing

Yes, I got a tempered glass protector at bestbuy when I bought the watch. No idea what brand it was. Hard to center because youre putting a circle inside a circle.

I ended up buying the Moto 360 again. Got it from T-Mobile like 30 mins ago.
Yet again the watch wont start out of the box.
Charging it - I hope this one doesn't discharge while on the charger. We'll see...
EDIT: Yes this one works very well. The old one probably had some sensor broken.

I had the same thing happen (the not turning on/charging thing) when I got mine. There will also, apparently, come a time when it drains abruptly then not turn on. Then you have to charge it for at least 5 hours, hold the power button down for 30 seconds, release and hold down again. Still, when it's working it's pretty neat.

I managed to fix the charging issue but the device was unusable. It would turn the screen off randomly in the middle of command.
The new one works great. It too had no charge out of the box but it charged to 30% in like 15-20 mins and then turned on by itself.
