Hello guys!
It has been more than two months that I bought my Elephone P8000, and I still waiting upon its delivery. However, I have been reading and following news about this device since then, and today I've got to some pretty interesting news:
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Comp...ow-leaks-includes-Samsung-Sony-and-LG_id74400
According to various sources (including PhoneArena, GizmoChina and a chinese site), the P8000 is getting official Android Marshmallow support! Isn't this great news? So far I am finding it a little too good to be true, but I can't help not to be excited! This device with Doze will surely get amazing battery times.
What is your opinion on it? Do you believe it is possible? What is your view on the potential battery life?
Best regards
Like all China phones, I'll believe it when I see it.

There is developer support and also Cyanogen will support the P8000. Therefore, I am pretty confident that we will benefit from Marshmallow (even if there is no official stock ROM).

Well, we can always hope
Lets see.. I hope to get Android M but the current ROM has misc bugs and it's time taken for them to resolve. So I think it would take time.

It's up to "you" really. The sources are released so it can get all versions of Android.
That's very much in contrast to most Chinese phones that do not release sources therefore are stuck to the one version that the OEM happened to support.
In fact the "released kernel sources" is IMO the only important reason to buy this phone.
I think it's the only device this cheap with released sources (*and* usable hardware).
Before getting the device I would bet that we wouldn't receive the M update, and I had my mind set to that. If we get it then that will be a happy turn of events for me.
If Elephone provides M then I think it will set them apart from other smaller Chinese OEMs. They have really turned around my opinion on them this year, with devices like the P7000 & P8000

I hope not, because I just upgraded my 72 year old mother from a Nexus 5 to a OnePlus 3. Well, it's on the way.
I may not modify anything on the phone. However, I do have a question: Does OnePlus update their phones to the latest versions of Android often, regularly, or will she be lucky to see updates at all?
Thanks!

They are generally quite good regarding monthly security updates.
Regarding new android versions, it's not exactly the same. Oh, they will definitely update the OP3 to Android Nougat. Android O won't be out and you'll already have Nougat on your phone ! Amazing ! So fast !
Oneplus are certainly not the best regarding updates but they are probably not the worst.
Don't expect fast updates like Nexus.
Monthly updates are nice, if there're bugs , you may get 2-3 update per month. You surely get the Android N update, but with my experiences with OP1 and 2, you will have to wait 3-4 months after nexus, simply because you are running on a custom android- Oxygen( quite nice now) so they are worth waiting.
and remember you always have HUGE deverlop community here, OP forum &chinese forums( which you could have strange ROMs port ) , so dont afraid ,

The OP3 is a shift for them. I think they're potentially going to change the game up on their whole paradigm simply based on the success of this phone. The public and media seem to be pretty fond of the OP3 at present, and Oneplus will need to maintain that momentum and keep their client base happy. If they're smart, they'll push Android M no later than Q4 of this year.
Hello.
I'm looking for a new phone, my budget is around 340 USD and therefore Lenovo P2 has really caught my eye. I'd like to ask a couple questions.
1. How is the bootloader unlock procedure? Is it known to be problematic or causing any issues with ultimately not being able to unlock the bootloader? Coming from an LG device, I want to be extra careful regarding this.
2. I plan to have this device for a longer period of time, around 3-4 years. Is Lenovo P2 a viable choice in this regard? Will it be able to hold off for that long, in terms of ROM support and general performance/usage?
3. How do custom ROM development prospects look right now for the device? Can I expect good custom ROM support from this device in the coming years?
4. How satisfied are you with your phone? Would you recommend it to me? Is there anything you don't like about the phone?
Thanks in advance.
1) submit unlock request through the phone and the bootloader should be unlocked 14 days later.
2) original ROM support - highly unlikely. Custom ROM - depends on how well received the phone is by the community. Might be too early to tell still. Performance etc, I don't think any high-end phone from 3-4 years ago can compete with mid range phone's today. So I can only imagine P2 being as sluggish as entry level phones today in 3-4 years.
3) can't comment. If you want custom ROM support, flagship Samsung and Nexus might be a better option?
4) battery life is exceptional, but I really wish it was smaller. The camera is not excellent either.

Are you planning to use this phone in the USA? If yes, don't purchase it. The us networks are not supported.

Thank you for the answer, very much appreciated.
I'm aware that it probably won't get official ROM support, but I hope that custom ROMs will be usable, i.e. that all the issues like the fingerprint scanner and notification LED will be fixed.
Most of the Nexus options are overpriced where I live, but maybe Nexus 6 could be an option(?).
Rom Support and reception seems to be starting well 2 months from this conversation... don't you think ?
(that's what made me buy it + full french 4G support)...

Let me put it this way: I still use my old Note 3 as remote control for Xiaomi Smart Home. It runs on last official Android 5.1. All those custom ROMs are crap. Nothing just headache.
Its a great budget phone
So I was all up and ready to buy a Moto G5 plus and then saw the Honor 8 Pro will be out soon. Everything about it looks great - The display (isn't amoled - thankfully!) and the size, the Kirin 960 looks like it competes with the Snapdragon 835 in many ways. And the price of course is very reasonable.
I'll be coming from the Nexus 5 so I've been in and around XDA a long time, flashing ROMs etc. I don't expect the Honor 8 Pro to be anywhere near as Dev friendly as the Nexus 5. But I was wondering if anyone can tell me what it's actually like for Devs with Huawei phones and getting hold of the sources needed to make custom ROMs or even get LineageOS and all the hardware working? I get the sense (but I'm not sure) that at the moment it's a *real* challenge because Huawei, like most manufacturers don't really believe that engaging with the Dev community can provide a great boost to brand visibility and "geek cred" which will then filter out into recommendations to friends and family etc: It can be a very strong marketing tool essentially. But companies rarely understand that it would actually benefit them in a business sense. So...
Do Huawei provide all the "sources" and resources needed for developing custom ROMs *eventually* or do they just not bother at all in some cases or make it very hard in others? I saw on a Honor 8 (not pro) thread that there are "ambassadors" around. Can these guys interact with Huawei/Honor to encourage them to help out with the necessary technical stuff to make building ROMs a viable possibility, and is that likely to get a good response or is it already in process?
I mean if I get the Honor 8 Pro, I'll use it "as is". EMUI is not bad but still quite amateurish/90s in many ways and I'm thinking I can go along way to fixing it by using a custom launcher. But if there's a good chance Honor/Huawei will suddenly become much more helpful with Dev stuff it would make it a dream phone for sure. Any info?
I've been looking in to this too. It seems you can unlock the bootloader on EMUI devices in an official way so that's a good start.
Have you had a look around the other Huawei and Honor forums? There do seem to be ROMs and unofficial Lineage OS builds, but I haven't found much info on sources, etc.
I have actually pre-ordered an Honor 8 Pro, it looks awesome and at £474 I couldn't resist. I think the major manufacturers have lost the plot in terms of flagship pricing.

I'm in the same boat. I love the H8Pro but all I see outside of stock based roms, is one unofficial Lineage build for the Honor 8. The camera is currently listed as not working still. It's like that on a lot of phones that aren't too well known. My Le Pro 3 for example didn't have working camera on the marshmallow roms for a while and then when they got it working the 7 roms didn't have it until very recently. So it's a maybe it will at all. The problem is that while a lot of these companies allow bootloader unlocking, no they don't release sources. That's a big problem. That means devs have to build things like camera drivers from scratch, and without them being that popular devs working on it aren't usually too plentiful. Also not too much kernel support for that Kirin chipset either.
Well let me ask you guys. How much custom ROMs do you use these days ? I myself found that after changing to custom ROM I found back to stock ROM. These days stock roms has become so good that they actually brings the true character of a phone
Apparently I'm not the only one facing this decision. I've owned the Moto 2nd gen, G3, and G4 and frankly every time I've moved up a model, I like them a little less. For that reason alone, I'm trying to look past the Moto G5. Now that the Honor 9 is coming out, I'm taking a look at the Honor 8, hoping the cost will come down. I've always carried my phone in my front pocket so the size difference over the G4 I have now has me a little worried, but the weight really doesn't matter. I'm really looking very hard at the Honor 8 Pro though since price wise, it looks pretty close to the best bang for the buck.
ehh ..

camera is good too,
battery lives are excellent (thanks to emui optimisations)

Coming from BlackBerry10 I'm looking for my first Android phone.
My idea is to purchase a last year flagship with LineageOS support, so to extend his lifespan.
Focused on HTC 10 or OnePlus 3t from news they will receive official Android O update.
Wondering how much LineageOS will support this phones post upcoming 15 release, i.e. will receive Android P as Lineage 16.0

It's been a long time since you posted this question, but I'm wondering which device did you buy, and are you satisfied with it?
Currently, OnePlus 3T is supported by Lineage OS 15.1 based on Oreo, but HTC isn't. I'm still waiting for official LOS Oreo release for HTC 10.
At the time when I was thinking which device to buy, I had same dilemma. OP3T is an excellent device, but it has AMOLED screen which is a big no for me. Now, I think I made right decision. The 10 does everything I need the phone to do. Great audio, solid camera, good screen, solid but not excellent battery.

I changed my mind since come out the company I'm working with will purchase me a new one.
After some research I asked for a Mate 10 Pro, recovering the Vat cost the same as the One Plus 5t but does have more business features and elements I wanted to experiment such as the translation with neural processor. So far really satisfied, if I need to find something the battery is really good but might be better. I also like the Amoled display.
What I miss is the BlackBerry10 smoothness and efficiency in business usage, but I already know was a trade off choice.

Hello folks,
Looking for a sub-$200 phone with decent hardware and enough XDA support for the updates.
HTC 10 hardware seems decent for the price available (around $160). I checked the threads but I am not too sure if there is enough support for this device on the board. I could not locate any 'upcoming' pie thread. So I am curious if there is any support for this device on the board that makes it worth spending $160 for this device.
If it does,
What version is the best? My goal is to get unlocked version but if I don't find it and have to go for a carrier labeled, which one should I get (which one I must avoid). I am on at&t.
Many thanks in advance.

HTC 10 is a good phone but I think it's not worth buying in 2018, because you will never have much support or updates in stock and with custom rom you will see a dying project.
That is my opinion
There is currently an unofficial LineageOS Oreo version which has most things working apart from the woofter (the bottom loudspeaker) and the chap creating that, fagyi, is also working on Lineageos pie version as well. If he pulls it off, you will have Oreo and also pie for the HTC10. He seems dedicated, and has done fantastic things so far, but there is no guarantee. It might be, it never works OK.
Apart from him, there are NO other ports of pie, and the development of them never even started.
Is it a good phone? Yep, it is. I think it is great and am using LineageOs Nougat, which works fine. But I can only recommend it IF you are prepared to take the risk that the LineageOS version above will work out and then become official.
As for HTC, there is no hope. They released a rather rushed version of Oreo out and that's that.

Maybe, maybe not....if Fagyi solves a few problems then we will have Oreo fully working and maybe even Pie.
But this all comes down to one person. If you want a device with active development by multiple people with multiple ROMS, then you should look elsewhere.

LineageOS Nougat (official version) works just fine on HTC 10 and the woofer works as it should.
HTC 10 have great hardware but HTC device software support management is absolutely worthless. HTC is ruining their costumers loyalty. They are supporting devices only one year long.
After official release Android 8.0 battery life is catastrophical, but HTC coorporation is not doing anything to fix that. That's why HTC 10 is my last device from HTC.
Better choose other manufacturers.

I bought the 10 earlier this year as a stop gap after my Pixel died. I was keen to wait for the Pixel 3 as the 2 didn't do it for me.
The handset itself is nice enough, camera is just ok and the battery life with Oreo is truly awful. Thankfully Quick Charge makes it useable. Screen is good, but not as punch as amoled.
Depends on your requirements, the handset does have more or less everything, but I compared app speed against a Huawei 3e and it was faster to launch apps like facebook and linkedin.
I agree; I think the hardware is fantastic and the phone is robust unlike a lot of new glass phones.
I also prefer a LCD screen over amoled, so that's good too.
But the software is dreadful and it's completely unacceptable to drop support after such a short period of time. Just look at Apple who released ios12 this week for iPhone 6 released in 2014!
My HTC 10 is going well on LineageOS 14 (Nougat) and hopefully Fagyi on these forums will get Oreo or Pie working one day which will add life to this old phone. But if he can't then I will be stuck with outdated software on my phone.
In any case, this will be my last phone from HTC.....
