[Q] if i install new update on my vzw xplay will i lose root

hi i just rooted and installed a custom theme from uot theme kitchen and noticed there was an update (current installed version is 2.3.2) and was wondering if i accepted it, would i lose root, and more importantly would i mess up my phone because i have a custom theme?

Last time I checked the 2.3.3 Update is not available for VZW, unless you are talking about a different update. Please keep me posted as well.

well acording to my phone there is an update available (could be a new kernel) but shortly after recieving the notification for the 10th time i bought titanium backup pro (best 7 bucks ever spent on my phone by the way) i put "updateinstaller" in a bloat freezer and it hasn't bugged me since

so any idea if it'll mess up my phone?

If you update to 2.3.3 and your are rooted it will brick your phone for sure happened to me a couple days ago. If you want the update you would need to unroot and then get update and re root but I'm not worried about updating I'm a fan of my phone now so I won't be doing it any time soon maybe once ICS is out and there's a root method out.

In what I have experienced, the phone bricks after unrooting and installing the update. I was wondering do I need to relock the bootloader. Unrooting alone still produces a paper weight.
Update: Locking the BL and updating worked. 2.3.3 working well unrooted. Seems the problem was with the flashtool.

I just updated and all I had to do was relock bootloader, it will wipe root by itself and when the update is done just unlock and reroot with same methods

1st Hi all and thanks for not bashing my lack of knowledge. I have done many searches and am now more confused than before.
I am comming from a droid X, I did the z4 root on it to get wifi tether working, it was on 2.2.1 I believe. Well it went very good, but I never got a push for an update. Got the new GN on verizon and tried to restore it back to stock, didn't work, so instead of selling it I gave it to my mom. Also, did this on a friends and he did get the update push and lost the root and superuser access.
This story is just so you know I am a complete noob. Other than following someones set by set on using Z4 I have really not done anything and have some questions on my new phone.
1. why would I want to unlock the bootloader?
2. after reading about the wifi hotspot by svtp do I need to root?
3. If i root and/or unlock the bootloader will this stop the updates from google (main reason I bought the phone)?
4. I am not into overclocking or modding but I want to be able to have wifi if I ever need it. That is the only thing I want.
Basically I am looking to unlock the wifi and still get all the google updates, is this possible? As of right now I think buying the svtp app is my best bet, I just don't want an unexpected bill showing up.

re #1: you need to unlock the bootloader to do pretty much anything non standard with your phone.
Since unlocking the bootloader wipes all data on the phone it's a good idea to do it early. You can leave it otherwise stock while you think about it, you can even relock it if you need to return the phone for some reason.
Neither unlocking nor rooting the phone will stop you getting the OTAs, it's custom roms that will do that. However most OTAs will stop your root access because they reset the permissions on your su files.

Just to add further to this... not only will custom ROMs stop you from getting OTA updates, having custom recovery (ClockworkMod) will prevent them from applying, even with the stock ROM. If using a stock ROM with custom recovery, you'll need to do the update manually. If you wait until you get the update notification, your phone should have downloaded the update to /cache. You can then use the custom recovery to apply the update. Alternatively, you can look on these forums for someone to post the URL to the OTA update zip file, download it, and flash it manually (this way you don't need to wait until your phone gets the update, you can download it and have it sooner).
In either case, you'll usually need to re-root, as stated. This is easier with a custom recovery, because you should just have to flash superuser immediately after flashing the update, before rebooting.
Until CM9 is stable, I'm running the stock ROM with ClockworkMod recovery. I can download the OTA updates manually and flash them with ClockworkMod then flash superuser and I'm good to go. Custom recovery makes it nice and easy to retain root, as well as the ability to do nandroid backups, etc.

[Q] Rooting GN

Greetings XDA,
Ive recently got me a GN (yakju) (couldn't wait for N4) and wait to get updated to 4.2. Now i run 4.2 and i want to unlock its boot loader & root it.
Not yet interested of having new roms on it, im cool with its stock android BUT i need to get full control of my device and not being restricted on apps that don't need root.
In case you want to ask me WHY i just didn't follow any of the guides for rooting nexuses in the forum, the answer is because im not sure which is the best/easiest/newest/safest
Im not very familiar with such staff i want to make is as simple as it gets and avoid breaking my phone (if thats even possible).
So please can you assist me to take this first android steps ?

Hi, welcome to the GNex and the possibilities with it. I have had my GNex since Jan 2012 and it was rooted 2 weeks later. I'm sure if you search in XDA you find lots of help on rooting. However I started out with the www.galaxynexusforum.com forum and followed the unlocking and rooting by Wug.
Assuming you have a verizon GNex here is what you should follow
Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit v1.6.0 [Updated 11/26/12]
It is a nice tool installed on a windows pc or laptop and I have used it to do my GNex and also another one from a friend about 6 month after mine.
Works great and i think if you follow these thread you are rooted in no time.

Ok its unlocked now, preparing to root.
I just got 1 more final question, considering i will not flash any other rom or such, with my device ONLY unlocked & rooted, will i be able to get OTA updates from now on or i will have to flash myself ? (also do i need Custom Recovery ? what does it do ? )

You dont need a tool to unlock...you just need adb and fastboot.
Ensure ADB Debugging is enabled.
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot oem unlock
At this point you can push a custom recovery to your phone - I think there are recoveries now that support 4.2.
After flashing the custom recovery, boot into it and flash your superuser.zip

I think you can still get OTA's but you will lose root. I suppose if the OTA was that important, you can relock the device (you will lose data) and then OTA up to the newest version and unlock again.
If you have a GSM device you are lucky, because the factory images are pretty plentiful. On Verizon CDMA we only have 4.1.1 (and because of this I only use 4.1.1 stock).
I had to relock and unroot on Tuesday because of a SIM card issue - didnt want Verizon knowing it was rooted. Came home and unlocked and rerooted all over again. Took about 10 minutes total.

After OTA 4.2.1 root is lost. Do i need to repeat the process to re-root ?

Backup before root?

I want to try some custom ROMs on my M8. Before I do this I want to do a full back up. From everything I've read Titanium is by a long shot the most popular so I see no reason not to go that route. However, from what I've read rooting the M8 will wipe my phone, but I can't use Titanium until I'm rooted. So it seems I'm stuck, and wondering what the best way is to proceed.

Rooting by itself won't reset your phone, using the HTC unlock token to unlock the bootloader will. However, if you can S-off, you can also unlock your bootloader without tripping the factory reset. Once your bootloader is unlocked, you can install a custom recovery and backup your (unrooted) OS image - then use that recovery to install su.
Unfortunately, the prerequisite to all of that is getting S-off. If you can't, or won't, do that, then yeah - as soon as you unlock the bootloader your /data partition will get nuked. It's a safety measure to prevent someone from stealing your phone, unlocking the bootloader, and bypassing the OS protections to get the data on it. Fortunately, it only happens when you unlock. If you subsequently leave the bootloader unlocked, it won't happen again.

How to root without unlocking and wiping data

Hi, I would like to root my Moto Z2 Play but I don't want to unlock bootloader, because all of my data will be actually formatted and I don't really want to set up things again.
With that, I would like to ask if there is any option to root my phone straight from Android UI.
So I don't have to use any PC to root this phone.

Actually with rooting come on place one important question.
This question is about: Is the phone able to receive updates released by manufacturer to moto Z2 play?
I'm asking because when I was rooting my Samsung phones on every single of them when they are rooted they are unable to receive updates by manufacturer so I literally had to plug the phone into my PC and Force updated it via Samsung provided program (Kies).
This was really painful so I am asking just before I will actually root it because I want the stock ROM and all of its official updates.
So I'll be really thankful with any answer on that question.

To root you must unlock the bootloader.
And you will receive OTA's, but if you install those, the phone will most probably brick. So, don't even try to install them.

As long as there is no vulnerability found in Android 8 that could actually be used to root, there is no other way than to open the bootloader which enforces a factory reset.
But if rooted properly with Magisk and as long as you only boot TWRP but never install it, OTAs should work. At least the only reason for bricking I know is when you try to upgrade after a downgrade since the updater seems to not check the bootloader. And with a downgrade to a version with an older bootloader something goes haywire which bricks the device on next update and you'll need a blankflash to fix that
