Hi guys, haven't been here in ages! (since I rooted my Note2) Things have changed in forum and I no longer see the stickies (or pinned) threads on rooting.
Last time I rooted, it all depended on the version you were on and back then, there were different ways of doing it - all again depending on the version you were running. (also no KNOX existed)
Can someone please point me to the most up-to-date tutorial? I don't want to pick the wrong one and brick my device.
Thank you.
Here are my details:
Software version: N910PVPU4COG5
Hardware version: N910P.05
Model number: SM-N910P
Android Version: 5.1.1
Baseband version: N910PVPU4OG5
Kernel version: 3.10.40-5303209
Build Number: LMY47X.N910PVPU4COG5
Security software version: MDF v2.0 Release 1, VPN v1.4 Release 5.2
KNOX version: KNOX 2.4.1
Make sure to read the whole post but this is the one I have used. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=62228433
Post # 56 in that thread linked above contains a live Beastmode kernel link plus other useful links and notes.

Thank you guys. Started reading that thread and gave up. Very confusing as you are being asked to do things you can't do unless you are already rooted. Very confusing and just didn't make sense. Thank god for post #56 lol
Did you have any problems installing TWRP?
Also, this guide is for stock rom, rooted, correct?
sorry so many questions, but primary reason for rooting is tethering. Are you guys able to tether after this procedure?
There is a method posted in this forum for hotspot with out root. You will need your MSL, but easily done with simple tools.
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-sprint/general/lollipop-hotspot-root-flashing-t3048163
That's awesome! Thanks.
Now if i could also write to sdcard without root, then i could live without it!

I just picked up this tablet. Should I take all of the OTA updates beore I attempt to root? Based on what I have read, it seems like I should, but I wanted to check before I take the updates. I am currently on JB v4.4.2. Thanks for your help.

It is not required to install all the updates before you root but if you would like to have the latest version then update first. If you plan to install a custom ROM later then no need for updating to the latest version.

Better idea, identify the apps that you don't want and ...
In application Manager, uninstall the updates and then disable them.

Thanky you for replying bulbous, but unfortunatelly your solutions is not of much help. In fact I was going to do what you told me through rom toolbox lite, but I still need root access. My intention though is to root my device and delate those crappy sMzung apps that i don't need and that only occupy space on my device, which is just 16 gb.
Do you or anybody have a very straightforward answer to what I asked at the beginning?
Thank you

Tablet restarts when trying to install apps
I followed the instructions given, but now when ever I attempt to install an app my tablet will restart itself, which prevents installation.
I'm new to rooting so I'm not sure what to do. Any sort of help will be appreciated.
I should mention I tried to use the autorootp600mj4.tar.md5 to root but when I restarted my device the supersu was there but it said I wasn't rooted, so I used CF-Auto-Root-lt03wifi-lt03wifixx-smp600.tar.md5 instead and it fixed the problem with supersu, but now I can't install anything please help.
Android 4.4.2
Hey there, I recently picked up a Galaxy Note Tab 2014 Edition and I tried rooting it, but the tablet is updated to the new software.
It is telling me that they can't find an SU Binary.
I would have to manually put one in.
Have you guys had this problem occur before?
If so, what course of action should I take.
I know this thread is a little dated, but if you get back to me that'll be very much appreciated!

I cannot get it working.
I am following the instructions in this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-10-2014/development/root-cf-auto-root-t2905495
and I am using this the file linked there:
CF-Auto-Root-lt03wifi-lt03wifixx-smp600.zip
The process seems to go fine and I do not see errors, but I have no root privileges and SuperSu is not installed.
If I try to install SuperSU from Google Play, I get an error message saying Google Play has encountered a problem.
Requests for root privileges (for example from Root Checker or SDFix) wait quite some time for a reply and then timeout.
Before that I had tried with the file p600Autoroot.7z linked from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2490805
The installation behaviour looked the same, in that case both RootChecker and SDFix were bailing out immediately with a failure in the request for root privileges.
Which file have you been flashing with Odin?
I have the feeling some step (but not all) of the rooting process are incomplete, probably due to some change in the Kernel.
Any suggestion?
Thanks for the help.

Managed to root P600 with FW P600XXUDOC1
I finally managed:
After having installed with odin
autorootp600mj4.tar.md5
I had to manually install SuperSU-v2.48 from TWRP.
Previous versions of SuperSU did not install, even if there were no errors (also TWRP did not show any error).
Among the many instructions I tried out, the one that worked and gave me the links to the right files is this one (sorry, in German):

Hey there folks! I'm looking to root my S4 but I'm having trouble locating the files I need to download so I can be rooted & if I can still root my S4.
My S4 Info
Model #: SGH-M919
Android Version: 4.4.4
Baseband Version: M919UVUFNK2
Kernel Version: 3.4.0-2437203 [email protected] #1 Mon Nov 17 19:20 KST 2014
Build Number: KTU84P.M919UVUFNK2
SE for Android Status: Enforcing SEPF_SGH-M919_4.4.4_0032 Wed Oct 15 17:16:50
Secure Boot Status: Samsung
Security Software Version:
MDF v1.0 Release 3
VPN v1.4 Release 2
So with all of this info, can someone please direct me (preferably via a link to the proper thread) to ALL the files I need in order to root. I've been browsing through some of the How-To threads already but nothing is really set-in-stone if the FNK2 4.4.4 Firmware is rootable? I've also been out of the Root Game for a long while (over a year) since I last rooted anything and I totally forgot how to root. So can someone remind me how to root? For my build# S4, do I use the drag-and-drop file loading OR Odin 3.6 program on a computer to do it?? Also, keep-in-mind.... I want to keep root as close as possible to stock 4.4.4.
Thank you for any detailed info.
I second this, I have the same build and all that but the only thing I can really find on it is to downgrade to 4.4.2 and do towel root. Not sure if this is the only way or not currently.
Google Chainfire's S4 root.
http://autoroot.chainfire.eu
Pp.
So this is the closest thing I found on the www.autoroot.chainfire.eu site:
samsung SGH-M919 jfltetmo jfltetmo MSM8960 msm8960 KTU84P.M919UVUFNH7 4.4.4 24 067 069 Download b354bc04aa16351305edfd33e85a58bf 212 032
Ummm.... I'm gonna say what I found above ^ is not the same as the Build# FNK2 that I have? Sooooo what happens now, because that still does not rectify the issue at-hand? Now correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't I brick my S4 if it tries to flash the FNH7 over my FNK2? Yeah, I don't want to do that because it would be a compatibility issue right? So like it was mentioned before, can rooting be accomplished for the FNK2 Build?
- Is it just not possible,
- is it not possible at this time because it has yet to be worked on,
OR
- do I just "test" this overwrite method of flashing FNH7 over my FNK2 and most likely end up screwing myself over with a bricked S4 because I'm going off someone's "it will/should work" (untested) hypothesis??
Note: Details about what someone did to get an FNK2 Build S4 rooted would be really nice.
Thank you.
It still works lol. Do it the same way as you would with nh7. You're not flashing firmware, just rooting. Use chainfires autoroot in odin then odin twrp or whichever recovery you prefer and you're in business. I'm running nk2 rooted right now.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using Tapatalk
Relax Spicy, Mr big is correct your not flashing firmware, it's just a temporary recovery that allows a root exploit to take place.
You then flash the corresponding recovery for your phone and now you enter the *bricking* zone, if you don't read that is.
I recommend CWM over twrp.

You probably tried towelroot and don't work with kitkat, you may have to flash stock firmware and then use Chainfire's auto root in general section to get root.
Then you can start over.

XDA Assist (where this thread originated) isn't a general technical assistance section, the purpose of our small team is to direct the questions to the appropriate device sub-forums so that people like yourself (who are familiar with the devices) can take over and lend a helping hand to those who need it.
I'm familiar with your guidance in these matters, just adding a little humor to the thread.
No harm meant.
Besides I'm a BIG fan of BACON.

hey pp i admit i did try towelroot but as soon as i tried it it said your device cannot be rooted at this time ( or to that effect) lol il be honest i cant remember what i used but it was a server bassed application thats all i remember my main concern is i wont be able to get it sim unlocked as desperatly need to get off t-mobile lmao many thanks mad
Well metro Sim card will work with t-mobile without unlocking sim, so that's an option.
But flashing stock firmware will fix whatever is borked so you have a working phone to start fresh.
Chainfire's Cf autoroot is foolproof with Odin, at that stage you can simply unlock.

Hello XDA devs! I'm looking to root my phone again and I've been looking all over and trying different things and I can't get my phone rooted.
Some basic info about my phone:
Device: Sprint LG G2 LG-LS980
Hardware version: Rev.1.0
Android version: Android 5.0.2
Kernel version 3.4.0
Build Version LRX22G
Software version LS980ZVG
I have rooted my phone before, but after an update the root was gone and I haven't been able to get it re-rooted after that. There's a lot of things I'd like to try with my phone but I'm pretty sure most of that requires root access. I'm fully aware of the possibility of "bricking" my phone and I'm prepared to deal with that if it happens.
I can't seem to find instructions on how to root with android 5 and I'm wondering if someone could at least get me going in the right direction.
Guidance on how to back up and restore the phone would be helpful just in case.

[q] [official howto] complete guide to root & unlock bootloader for verizon note 4
Gents,
As the title says: This is EXACTLY what I'm looking for. The thing is that after looking and searching throughout this XDA section, here's what I've found:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/general/noob-how-unroot-phone-t3418431
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/general/guide-noobs-guide-to-perm-root-twrp-t3360883

http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...t/howto-bootloader-unlock-upgrade-to-t3398144
I would normally have no problem diving in head first into any of these threads. The issue is that even as I begin to read them, in each of these threads there's a handful of individuals claiming something like: 'Oh, you left this step out' or 'You forgot to include' this, or 'This only applies to this, but not that' and so forth.
I'm not really knew to the world of modding, rooting, theming, unlocking and so forth...but it does scare me a bit when there's so much information that seems to contradict other information or at the very least appears to be incomplete.
If possible, can someone with a solid understanding of the Verizon Note 4 and all things Permanent Root/BootLoader Unlock/Custom Recovery/Custom ROM installation please shed some light and provide some guidance for me on this thread?
I'm sure it would benefit many.
Just trying to get this Note 4 permanently rooted, with a kick-ass recovery...a snappy kernal and an awesome custom rom for my daily driver...all without bricking the poor guy.
Not sure how much it matters, however Just FYI here is some specifics on my particular Verizon Note 4:
Model Number: SM-N910V
Android Version: 5.0.1
Hardware Version: N910V.06
Please advise if possible.
Thank you,
BJ
You got here late............................
You need a History lesson. but I don't have time to give it to you. This thing has evolved. All the threads you mentioned have contributed to the testing and understanding.
Some of the OP in some of the threads have changed and no longer list the ROM's that first came out for Newly rooted Verizon Note 4. ( I wish they would bring back the custom 5.1.1 ROM's but they have moved on to Marshmallow )
I can tell you this. The first time you permanently root your phone, it should be on stock 5.1.1.
I created a thread mostly for my own use here http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...bilized-process-to-unlock-bootloader-t3375527

You said it all right there!
I have tried several Marshmallow ROMs and I always come back to 5.11. In my opinion it is just a better operating system!
All of my apps are able to write to the SD card with no issues and that is important to me.
