My phone was constantly rebooting so i went into CWM and did a factory reset and it froze while wiping and since then it wouldnt reboot. I went to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1551901&page=11 and followed the directions for the one click recovery using odin 1.81 but it stopped updating on the data.img. I kept it connected for over an hour. I disconnected the cable and rebooted the phone. now when i turn it on it says "firmware upgrade encountered an issue please select recovery mode in kies and try again" i tried holding power and volume down and it briefly boots up but then goes to the firmware upgrade screen. Kies isnt recognizing the phone as being connected. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
you are not the first one today (yesterday) reporting the same problem. There were about 3~4 incidents reported during today. So, don't go further at this time. I hope some more Devs joining to give more helps.
During the time you are waiting, read the almost same case -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1554392
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1549382
Also, please describe the full details about what you did and how you did -
where did not download the rom, what's your rom/kernel version before installing the rom, how did you proceed to odin the rom, etc...
You mentioned that you tried to flash the rom using the one click recovery using odin 1.81. Can you please be more details about this?
Before flashing the rom, you said that your phone was constantly rebooting. What was your rom and kernel at that time? Do you think there was anything suspicious causing the rebooting?
Maybe the solution would be simple but I saw many people reported same thing, there would be common issue in here. So, we need to find out what that is....
Sorry for not giving you the suggestion at this time.
This isn't an ODIN issue. ODIN is just the messenger in this case.
There is a problem between the ICS kernels and custom recovery where it will sometimes corrupt your /data partition if you reset/wipe/restore/format/etc. Any large partition operations are suspect. Copying files seems fine. It doesn't necessarily do it every time so it'll work for some but brick others. Even if it works a couple of times, it can brick at any time.
The EMMC memory actually becomes damaged and even JTAG repair will not fix. By the time you get to ODIN the damage is already done. ODIN won't be able to write to /data even using a .pit file with repartition set, ODIN one-click won't write to it, CWM will hang writing to it, JTAG will have issues also.
Your best bet is to get a replacement.
There are multiple threads about this, which is why people suggest you go back to a GB-based kernel+CWM to do your ROM flashing.
This is one thread where the data.img corruption is discussed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504808

Maybe try using odin to flash a kernel with recovery, and get into recovery before it reboots(or pull battery since it won't boot after odin is done doing its thing). then restore a nandroid, or flash a Rom?

I think we are in synch - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1556609 (the suggestion that I provided).
Adding to this, I personally recommend to format the sdcard before installing anythig - there's a option to format sdcard.

Before you guys read this thread, let me just go ahead and say that i AM in fact a XDA noob... so dont hate. I didnt come here for that, but i came for help. Now, i did notice that there were alot of people having similar problems as i was. And yes, i did read all those threads. BUT, the only difference was, they got that error while trying to unroot. I was trying to root mine. I simply tried flashing CWM (and yes i made sure it was the correct flash as well) and it failed. Tried rebooting the phone, and i got that error. I am honestly freaking out right now as to if i have lost my phone or not, so i wouldnt appreciate hate in the comments, that would not help. So please help if possible... Is there a way to fix this?
We're you on stock Rom. How did you try a put CWM on your phone?? Odin??
Best way to install a recovery is Odin or goo manger!!
If you can get the phone into download mode then you can just flash back to your stock firmware...
Unless you flashed the wrong recovery on your phone. Then your in store for brick city.

thanks, i was actually on odin. But i think i found the solution. You see, when i was trying to find a solution on my own, i accidentally ended up installing a verizon rom on my phone which is att. (i didnt know it was verizon) The rom works, but i cant use mobile data, because its not a verizon SIM card. However, i managed to install TWRP recovery with goomanager, and from that i will attempt to install the JediXP14 custom rom. Strangely, it seems the phone is rooted even though i was told it failed. I will let you know on the progress, should be done in an hour or so.
Oh boy..... I smell brick city.. You better be careful what ur doing with Odin... If u are flashing stock firmware in Odin it flashes the radio with it....
Ok guys, i SOMEWHAT resolved the issue. But there are alot better ways of doing it, i was just forced to do it the following way:
The only flash rom i could get to go in through odin was a Verizon rom. It was basically the stock Note 2 rom for verizon.
Now the only problem with this, is that obviously, my phone is ATT and this is a Verizon rom, but it WILL work, but with an exception. Wifi and all will work, you can call and receive messages, but you cannot access the internet via mobile data. So that was another issue that popped up. I tried flashing an att stock rom through odin, but it stayed stuck at "Setup Connection" so that didnt work. The only solution i could think of was to unlock the rom, so i could use data with my ATT sim card. Strangely, the phone thought that it was a Verizon phone when it was an ATT phone, so that was the only option. It required a root but that wasnt a problem. I installed Hidroid off the play store and unlocked it that way, and now everything works fine. There is still an error message in the status bar saying "Non-Verizon SIM" but despite that message, everything still is in working order. If anyone knows what to do once you first get that error message, you could post it below for anyone else having the same problem. And if there is a way to change it back to the normal ATT stock, that would be appreciated as well. Thanks

Maybe you just need to flash att modem with ril for your device. Scroll down and dload the one for att then flash using cwm or twrp. After flashing modem try flashing att rom again via Odin.

Ok guys I resolved the problem. But it took more steps than it needed. This is for people who accidentally flashed the wrong type of recovery to your phone (example, gt-1700 version of cm what on sgh-I317) I'll be renaming this thread if I can. So here's all the steps I took. Now keep in mind that I didn't exactly know what I was doing so I kind of learned on the way, like I said in the beginning of this thread, I am a noob, and I admit such.
1. Install any rom that is in md5 format (preferably with your carrier modem but anything will do) I used a verizon rom. I can't exactly provide a link given my user status though, but I will when I can.
2. If you don't have wifi and downloaded rom under incorrect modem, then download hidroid on the play store and unlock it. It should be simple once getting the app. This will allow you to use mobile data. You'll need it.
3. Download goomanager
4. Press menu button
5. Install open recovery script
Now you should have TWRP installed on your device.
6. Install any custom rom compatible with your device, but make sure it comes with the correct modem as your phone originally had.
7. Flash it through TWRP (make a backup first)
You should be done from there. Now I don't recommend this. There has to be an easier way, so it would be great if anyone could provide that below. But the steps above are the steps I took. Thanks

Umm guys, i ran into a similar problem. Where would i find the att rom to flash from odin?
I'm a newb at rooting, so please bare with me. I currently have the Sprint Epic Touch 4G with firmware 4.0.4 and build FL24. Last night I tried to root my phone with the ODIN 1-Click method. Being the newb that I am, I didn't realize that I downloaded the FI27 Kernel from rwilco12' site.
So booted my phone into Download/Odin Mode. Started the 1-Click ODIN kernel and plug my phone in. The root process started but failed after a few minutes. Now, everytime I boot my phone up, I get an error message "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue..."
I'm at a loss at what I should do. Thanks in advance for any help!

If your phone boots into anything, all is not lost. Have you tried the one-click again? Sometimes it doesn't take. Read the directions you're following very correctly again, reinstall the one click. And in the future, read, check, read again double check, and never stop reading. We were all noobs once, just takes patience, trial and error, and alot of reading . Good luck!

Have you tried different ports, cords? Try a different oneclick? If you're flashing the same oneclick and keep having issues, might be a corrupt file. Download again using pc(not phone) or try a different stock oneclick. If all else fails, reinstall usb drivers, Kies, Odin, and start over ..Sucks, I know, but necessary sometimes.

In serious need of your help here guys. I bricked my T-mo SGH-M919 today trying to root. Now I can't flash the stock recovery thru Odin. Tried a zillion times, uninstalled and reinstalled drivers restarted my comp, done everything I could think of still no dice.
I keep getting this Fail message in Odin saying " There is no PIT partition" tried to search for a PIT file for my specific model but couldn't find any. I even tried recovery thru kies emergency recovery and failed at the last step. Anybody can help me please.

Don't use and dont need pit file.
Find the stock shipped tar file (aka) 4.1.2 Rom
Load in pda leave everything checkedbin odin thats checked.
Rooting isnt hard at all just got my s4 3 hrs ago rooted in 5 minutes soon as I walked in the door.
You need the Root_m919uvuamdl.zip
And then flash MDB setUIDoff .zip
Then flash superuser.
Thats it.

Let me ask you one thing. .. is the com port in odin coming up recognize the phone ...if so you are not bricked. . The two vital things u need to see is com port turn on usually blue color and download mode..
The problem def lies somewhere else possibly bad tar file .
Try to find another source for the stock rom tar file another option is boot into recovery and flash a stock rom if you have recovery still

Pit file. That solved my problems. Flash it alone, then flash a good stock rom.
Well, I tried to install http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2683507 and I've done it before, but this time I'm having trouble and I think I screwed up.
I downloaded it, copied it to my SD card in my phone, made a backup ( or so I thought ), wiped, and well it fails
whenever I try to flash it says
E:error opening '/data/data/com.android.chrome/cache/com,google,Chrome.
E: error: Too many open files
E: Unable to open zip file
Error flashing zip 'external_sd/V9 (1).zip'
This is kind of urgent I no longer have a phone now
EDIT: WELL I have it working again THANK THE GODS I honestly don't know how. I just sort of well, kept at it. I kind of figured the download got a little messed up, so I downloaded a different ROM, turned the phone off, and well it did the same thing. by now I'm freaking out, thinking "holy **** I finally did it, I ruined it." But I refused to stop, I just kinda kept trying to get it to work, I honestly don't know how I got it to work, and I don't even care. I DID notice when the ROM did get installed it said on TWRP the same message, but that was after the ROM installed. so I have no idea.

Then you go into download mode and using Odin (on your laptop) you flash the stock firmware.
