Does anyone know which stock system app is associated with the Default app manager. I think I may have removed it when I was debloating because everytime I click on a hyperlink I always hav to choose which app I want to use to open it. I have tried clearing all the set defaut apps and then reset them many times but it does not work.

Last night I downloaded an app from the market: Anttek App Manager. I didn't really need it, I just came across it & it seemed like a good program that I could use to replace a couple of other apps.
I opened up the program & didn't do anything. I did grant it superuser permissions when it opened, but did nothing else except browse through & get a feel for the interface.
Suddenly I was having a force close party all over the screen. Market, maps, settings, homescreen, anything system was force closing. I tried opening settings to uninstall the app but it force closed immediately. Tried with Market, same result. I could get into user apps to uninstall but when it tried to uninstall through the system uninstaller it would force close. I finally uninstalled through Titanium Backup. I was still getting force closes so I rebooted. After the reboot I could open system apps again. I checked my apps in settings & the app was gone from he downloaded tab but remained under the all tab. I uninstalled again. I checked through root explorer & it wasn't there, but in protected apps there was a downloadfile.apk that was timestamped with when I rebooted. I emailed it to myself to check out later if needed & deleted the file.
What do you guys think? Was it just something buggy that I'm blowing out of proportion or is it something to worry about?
Edit: I'm running cyanogenmod 6.1.2 if it matters.
I honestly dont know if it was something malicious or not. I had an issue when I downloaded an app (Don't remember what it was) and it downloaded 300+ downloadfile.apk. As you probably guessed it filled up my sd card. In my case I found it prudent to do a complete wipe and reflash my ROM. I set everything back up and havent had any more issues.
I would probably wipe and start over or Nandroid back to before you downloaded the app. Just my opinion...
Yeah, I think I'm just going to restore from a backup. I just don't want to have to reflash my theme & font, but it doesn't take that long, I'm just lazy.
I was wondering if there's anyway a virus could go deeper than what is changed by wiping/flashing/restoring? I'm somewhat technologically literate but when it comes to the deep down stuff I'm lost.
Hello I was just wondering if I can delete the google maps and apps like dropbox, tuneinradio, pdf viewer using the root explorer? Did anyone try it out? Will the system function properly?
Should not be a problem as those are actually user apps that placed in system. Most custom ROMs put those in data/app.
Why do you want to remove them ? You also can disable them in settings-apps-all
click disable button and they won't run.

I want to delete these apps because they keep on running in background and I never use these apps at all. I don't need navigation. Disabling them would not help because as soon as i restart my phone, they will run. Are you sure that deleting them from the system, wont make the phone reboot or anything

Your clock and weather use maps for your location. I wouldn't delete that. It doesn't draw much juice anyway. Drop box is fine to delete.

No, it will not make the phone reboot or anything. You can copy those you're going to delete to your sdcard in case you need them again.
Or you can rename them to something else, like change the .apk to .bak and it will not run. When you need them again just simply rename .bak to .apk again.
Removing Maps has no effect on your weather & clock as those use system file HtcLocationService.apk. I have Maps removed in my ROM too as I don't use Google Maps.
I used titanium backup to uninstall a lot of the crap it comes with. I didnt remove maps but all the twitter apps had to go... theres about 5 items to do with twitter lol
Hi. I'm using JB ROM AOKP custom IceColdJelly built on 4.1.2. Anyway, on a fresh wipe, had removed /data /system, I had accidentally set 'htmlviewer' as a default to a certain extension. I meant to hit the icon next to it, jota as its a text file type. Anyway, I cleared all defaults in 'all' in manage apps. I still have htmlviewer for the default even though when i click on it in manage apps the 'set defaults' has nothing in it so it can't be clicked etc.
I tried installing new text file apps and even removing htmlviewer in titaniumviewer which results in nothing literally after clicking the file in a file manger. Even tried a couple default app managers which only show nova launcher as a set default app (since its the only thing I have set since clearing all defaults in manage apps). Just seeing if anyone has any idea what to try before I give up and fresh wipe again which takes ages due to all the various apps I install (like 60 games for a start, have games for me and our 2 kids on the phone). It's a fair bit of data to download so I'd prefer just trying to fix the default issue if I can.
Well, a workaround of sorts. Installed a file explorer with an inbuilt file viewer that is viewing the text file types that my 2 existing file explorers were using that htmlviewer as a default. Not perfect but beats the crapnout of fresh installing a new ROM.
I know there's a way to clear default,
but is there any app helping me to organize all default apps at once?
I tried Default App Manager, but it only directs me to the page and need me to clear manually.
I want to clear multiple default at once, is that possible?
(I am rooted user)
When you down load apk it asks you which program to use and always or just once....mine doesn't ask anymore. I want it to ask, how do I make it again?
How to remove an Android default app setting:
---Navigate to Settings.
---Enter the Apps menu. On some phones it will be called Application Manager or something similar.
---Swipe over to the All apps list.
---Select the app you want to remove as default.
---Tap Clear Defaults.
Now the next time you launch the link/file type that app was associated with, you will be prompted to choose a default app again. Note that you clear all defaults for an app at once. So if you choose Clear Defaults on the browser, you clear it as default for all of the links it was associated with.
I can't find 'Verify and install'
Check under your security settings...
There should be a permission you need to allow to install apps from 3rd party sources.
Download, install and open default app manager lite from playstore and clear defaults

I have done all of the above short of a factory reset. It still doesn't ask which one to use to install.
