hello All, would appreciate any help you could provide. I rooted this tablet, the samsung galaxy note 8 i467 att, using the chinese app 360 super root. the only problem: it installs a chinese super user. it also required all permissions; these two facts made me nervous about leaving the app installed. unfortunately, removing the app also removed root. I could not figure out how to uninstall the app, and leave root, so I could install chainfires supersu; all attempts failed. Chainfire's supersu would not install the initially required updates.
I tried freezing the chinese super user app hoping that I cound install the english supersu after the chinese one was frozen. This did not work; all super user required functions froze, so chainfire's would not install. Then I tried to unfreeze it, but due to a glitch in the app I was using to freeze programs, I was unable to. Now I was stuck with a tablet with a frozen superuser. No root access.
At this point, I decided to go back to the initial plan. Downgrade using Odin (go from firmware 4.4.2 down to 4.1.2 from sammobile) and use a root method available for that firmware, in english. This process failed in odin, leaving me with a brick. Currently, the tablet powers on, and it says something like " a firmware not authorized by at&t has been detected". nothing else. Stock recovery/Odin mode is available via hardware keys, but all attempts to flash (4.1.2) from this screen via odin have failed for me. I have also tried kies emergency flash mode. The tablet is not recognized in kies. it hangs at the intial connection phase, and connection time out.
Please advise if there is any way I can bring this tablet back to life, and achieve root. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Downlaod the ROM from sammobile that is for your note. Do not use the open firmware.
I didnt think you could downgrade 4.1.2 if you took the update?
I like you a problem~~~
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-8-0/help/rec-i467-4-4-2-ni2-stock-recovery-t3201261
What was the error code in Odin?
It is my understanding that, starting with 4.3 and higher, the bootloader cannot be downgraded and attempts to downgrade the bootloader may soft-brick the tablet.
I think the only way to quickly revive the tablet may be to flash a custom recovery and custom ROM if possible.
Also, try Samsung's SmartSwitch ( kies replacement) to see if that can recovery the tablet.

Hey guys, I hate to make my first post in XDA forums asking noobilities but... welll..
Spoiler
I tried to root my Note not knowing that it would made me unable from further receiving upgrades from Samsung, so I'm in the disjunctive of finding a way to go back to zero, or to go on and install a new ROM (I've been looking at ProBam).
The problem is, when I first tried to root the cellphone, I used this guide:
"galaxynote2root"
But I guess their recovery was outdated, since when I tried to run it, after ODIN completed it's installation, the phone's screen went to the "Galaxy Note II" starting screen, then it started to shake glitchy, and turned-off.
The root worked, I had the Supersu and root apps worked fine. But the recovery failed. So I asked for help in a few amateur forums, and they told me unroot, and root back using CWM SuperUser and stuff.
Well, it didn't worked, while this time the reboot was fine, having the expected load-uo with the "cmd.ex"-like installation screen on the Note.
BUT. No root application works, nor CMD ROM manager, nor Titanium Backup, etc... Actually, I didn't even had a superuser... I downloaded Supersu again -since I had seen it work before- but it just keep crashing. All other apps kept asking for the Superuser authorization. Finally, I decided to press the unroot option of Supersu again to get ride of it, assuming I failed the root.
TL;DR
So, know, my question are, can I get ride of the binary counter trough a factory reset? If not, is there a safe way that doesn't implies "bricks"? At last, how could I have both the SuperUser and the recovery? what went wrong back there? Is there any more recent tutorial for rooting?
Triangle away will reset your boot counter.
Try to follow any of drketans guides for rooting unrooting.
Also mskips galaxy tool kit is what I use to root and install twrp.
Good luck

I have rooted many mobile devices and flashed numerous ROMS. However I recently purchased a Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition and have not been able to get very far in my attempts to root, etc. I have tried Odin and CF-Auto-Root and although it appears to be successful the device is not rooted. I want to install TWRP and then the knox free stock ROM. I am able to push the necessary files to the sdcard with ADB and I can see that the files are in /sdcard using ES File explorer. However when I boot into recovery mode /sdcard is red and at the top of the list and it will not let me navigate to it to install any zip files. I though at first it might be because of the MobileIron I use for company email but I did a factory reset and still have this problem. I just need to root the device so I can use Titanium BU to remove the Samsung apps I don't want. Any help with this would be most appreciated. What do I need to do?

Ultimately I think the first thing I need to resolve is that even though the Odin rooting process appears to be working according to Odin(PASS). The fact is that regardless which combination of Odin 3.07/3.09 and CF-Auto-Root (tried 2 versions) even though Odin says it was successful it turns out the device is not getting rooted. This should be a no brainer but for for whatever reason this device will not root so far.
Bumping this as I have not received any replies. I am hoping that someone has run across a similar situation and can offer some guidance.
Thank you,

Did you install super su?Did you try to flash twrp.If your not rooted twrp will ask to root.Have you tried to install a root app and see if the permissions pop up?
When you say recovery do you mean the stock one?Im pretty sure i had same problem. It was rooted but i thought it wasnt.

This is a very strange deal. As previously stated I have tried various combinations of Odin and CF-Auto-Root and the Odin process completes with PASS. However when I boot the OS and run Titanium it is never able to gain root access and Root Checker says it is not rooted. Unfortunately even after doing a factory reset the MobileIron Admin console at work says it is rooted so I can't use it for company email. I have definitely tripped the Knox bit. Also I want to install TWRP and have pushed the file to /sdcard and can see it there using a file explorer app. However when I boot into stock recovery I cannot see any of the zip files I have copied there. I also tried to flash TWRP with Odin and again it completes with PASS but TWRP never gets installed. And yes I installed SuperSU but did so from the Play Store.
I purchased this device just last week. I am wondering if maybe Samsung has changed things in the past few weeks and locked these friggin things down even more? This is the first device of many I have owned that I couldn't root or install a custom recovery or ROM. In any case this will definitely be my last Samsung device. I would however like to do whatever I so desire with it since I paid good money for it.
I have resolved all of the problems I was having. They were all due to Knox and my inexperience with it. I was fortunate to have customized my Note 2 before it received the Knox updates. All is well and there is no new unknown vodoo lurking in the latest iteration of Samsung devices.
I'm sure this has been addressed but I can't seem to find a definitive answer. I am bone stock (stock recovery and no custom rom) with just root on AT&T.
There are no missing deleted apps, as I replaced them previously but I still have never been able to do any of the OTA updates. It's starts and then fails.
Is there a way to unroot and the do an OTA update? I am trying to avoid Odin so I dont have to wipe everything and then have to start all over and adjust settings to my liking an also reinstall all of my apps.
I seen there is an option in the Super User app to "completely unroot and uninstall". Will choosing this option allow me to finally do OTA?
I've never installed a custom recovery or a custom rom so I don't know why OTA's always fail. At this point, I dont really care about having root since the only reason I previously wanted it was to remove at&t bloatware but I'd rather have OTA's at this point.
Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated! Please speak slowly and in layman's terms as I am an old fart that is still a bit of a n00b, lol.
Thanks!!

If you are on stock and have a valid AT&T SIM card in the device with full access to Wi-Fi and the AT&T network, you should be able to get an OTA update. Root could, however, indeed prevent an OTA update so your best bet may be to unroot. You could unroot and uninstall SuperSU from the SuperSU app just as you suggested. This should do it. However, if it doesn't and you would really want to avoid Odin and custom recovery, then you could do a 2-step manual update to 4.3 via stock recovery - first to 4.1.2 and then to 4.3. This will naturally update your phone to (full) stock 4.3 and we can then see if the phone will take the Kit-Kat OTA update from there.
You can see the instructions for the 2-step update via stock recovery in the thread below ...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2387423
1) Download the 2 zip files under update412.zip and update43.zip respectively to your computer
2) Copy the zip files to a good quality (micro) SD card
3) Place the card in your phone and boot to recovery mode by simultaneously holding down the Volume Up, Home and Power buttons
4) Hold the buttons until you see a blue message flash across the screen. Then release the Power button but continue to hold the Volume Up and Home button until you see the Android image appear. Then release the buttons
5) Use the volume up/down key to scroll to <mount from external storage> and the power button to select
6) Navigate to the first zip file (update412.zip) and install. Wait for installation to finish and your phone to reboot.
7) Complete set up. Check your phone settings. Then power off and reboot to recovery again.
8) Repeat the process for the second update file.
Well I tried the unroot feature in SuperSU and then uninstalled it.
I then tried the OTA update again and as usual, it failed about 30-40% in.
Ive never installed a custom recovery or a ROM so I don't get it. All I did was use Mr.Robinsons thread/directions on "how to root without tripping...." just for root only in the sticky.
I give up.:banghead:
Thank you though for responding. I may try the alternative way you suggested when I get time tomorrow and see what happens. Either that or screw it, im stuck with 4.1.1 and now I don't even have root. :banghead:

There have been several reports of failed OTA update so you may not be alone here. The process I advised is sure to take you to 4.3 JB without hassle. There is, of course, a manual update process from 4.3JB to 4.4.2 Kit-Kat (the latest OS). You will, however, require custom recovery for this ...

Well I finally was able to update via OTA. I had to actually use Kies and reinstall firmware and then go through all the updates, starting from scratch and took forever. What an absolute pain in the ass. Plus, after all this work to go from 4.1 to 4.4..........I can't see where it was worth it. I am now going through the tedious task of setting up all the settings and widgets and everything else the way it was or the way I like. So much for Kies actually backing up and "restoring" anything.
I have a couple of questions though....
1. Now that I am on 4.4..........how do I root this version (that works). I was reading the thread saying to use towelroot but it's not confirmed if this is still working after I guess you do the OTA after a certain date and it's now patched. I DO NOT want to install custom roms or anything else. All I want is root so that I can remove the AT&T crapware that is now even worse with this phone on 4.4.
2. I have a battery percentage that is in the LEFT upper corner that I can not figure out what program or app it is associated with and I can not get rid of it. This is not the % indicator that is part of Android and next to the battery icon on the right which is on and is okay, this is one the left.
3. I hate the new PIN lockscreen because the keypad/numbers are so small compared to old version. Any way to fix this?

Glad to know you were finally able to update. To try to answer your questions ....
1. Towelroot indeed comes well recommended for rooting on Kit Kat. You could, however, first try CF Auto Root which is one of the simplest approaches to rooting. If this doesn't work, you could try Option 2 in the thread below ... The thread also contains instructions to CF Auto Root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538991
2. I'm not sure what that battery indicator is. I run 4.4.2 also on my S3 but I cant see this. Can you try a reset to see if it would go away?
3. You can try removing this from settings.
Im glad you asked this...
I too noticed Im on 4.1.1 stock but rooted. I wondered if you could go to 4.4.2 as my phone tried to OTA update on its own last week and failed. I did not know if it was worth it to try or not another way. About the only thing I see that would want me to try is Google Wallet now working with S3 on 4.4.2 without having to jump through all kinds of hoops, mine used to work fine, but now GW will not open up all the way. Im not sure its worth doing if I have to re setup all my crap as I will be upgrading my phone whenever I want, just holding out to see if the Nexus 6 will be out end of the year and on AT&T..Im not liking that all the new phones are getting so freakin big, the S3 is just right and I dont want to have to end up with a damn Note sized phone but that is a whole other discussion
If you're still on 4.1.1, BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE, UNLOCK YOUR PHONE IF HASN'T ALREADY
otherwise you'll regret it
then the rest, tbh, you don't need to unroot at all to upgrade, just flash the firmware in ODIN or recovery..
edit: nvm it seems like you've already upgrade yours to KitKat
So I wanted to root this tablet, and I used a video online to help me do so.
I installed the USB drivers, got Odin 3, and loaded in CF_AutoRoot_Port_T700_BeansTown106.tar
It rooted my tablet and I was pretty happy about that. I then had update supersu, by getting the SU binaries.
So I came to this site and downloaded the recommended Supersu, and flashed it. It fixed that.
Well, then I wanted to get a custom ROM, so I flashed the Cyanogenmod 12, along with the component with it.
I found I didn't like it compared to my 5.0.2 Lolipop, and so I tried finding the stock ROM.
The gator download site everyone was showing refused to let me download anything, and just about all the ROMS seemed like they were from countries other than the U.S.
I searched for awhile, found nothing, then found a ROM called the Ironman Lolipop ROM, it was close enough to stock, so I flashed it.
Suddenly everything was normal, but then supersu needed binaries again, and after I flashed it again, it just stopped asking if it should grant permission, making the root useless.
Frustrated, I looked online again for ROMS, found a Canada one, decided to download, it would take two hours.
Well I'm not from Canada so I doubted it would work, and didn't want to wait two hours.
I decided to Flash back the Cyanogen.
Well unfortunately I went in and found out that I had deleted it earlier, whoops. And so my data wipe brought me back to Ironman ROM.
So, thinking that flashing to Iron Man screwed up my root I tried to re-root with Odin, the same way as the first.
It then had trouble booting, and when it did, it hung at the Samsung logo.
Now I've been stuck on this logo for about an hour, I can't turn it off. I'm assuming the only way to is to wait for it to run out of power.
I have been using TWRP this whole time.
I twice have backed up, and wiped data.
When I hit restore I saw no backups though, I'm not sure if they were for the ROM?
I don't know, I only have a year of experience.
Edit: I have an 8.1" T700 from Amazon.

Hi! To force reboot while in a soft brick, press and hold power+home button+ both volume buttons all at the same time.
Then when the screen goes black, quickly press the odin\download mode button combo or recovery comba if you wish.
Luckily, I have mirrored the latest firmware for the T700 to a faster hosting site. This is an UK firmware and is the latest one. It should flash fine as I have flashed different firmwares from different countries many times.
Download Firmware (fast download): https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24052804347761130
Now, ironrom has problems with root sometimes. When I make roms I don't preroot them as they cause problems of binaries if you preroot them. Anyway feel free to flash the firmware with odin or load an custom ROM to your sd card and flash it.
Hope this helps!

Thank you for getting me out of the brick and back to stock.
However going into Supersu it says.
"There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSu cannot install it. This is a problem!
If you just upgraded to Android 5.0, you need to manually re-root- consult the relevant forums for your device!"
My question is, can I properly re-root it the way I had been?
I'm assuming if it soft bricks again I can just reinstall a stock ROM again.
Also all these ROMS and backups take up a lot of space, how would I go about deleting those when I'm done?

In my files app, look for an folder called TWRP. Your backups are in there. To root simply install twrp and follow the twrp method to root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=59638836
You can delete your backups from within twrp. Just select restore, then the backup, then delete.
Its finally happened. I picked up my note 8 today from my nightstand and said "why not try" and low and behold, Kingroot 4.1 successfully rooted my Note 8!
Thanks , just download the apk 4.1 version of kingroot and get root acces for 4.4.2
Gracias , solo descarguen el apk version 4.1 de kingroot y listo acceso root para la i467 at&t , que hace tiempo ando buscando
excelente !
Done!!
Just rooted with King root 4.1
Thanks for the heads up on this!
---------- Post added at 09:46 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:24 PM ----------
EDIT: After rooting with kingroot, I used the app from the Google play store called "SuperSu Me" This app removes king root and installs supersu while keeping root... it took less than a minute to do.
Amazing app
I tried this on two tablets and it failed. Is there specific procedure?
KC
Not sure which version of kingroot you're using, but o.p. specified to use version 4.1.
I downloaded king root v4.1... and ran it... no tricks.
Here is a link that I found to the app for kingroot for you:
https://userscloud.com/33vyymss3kkq
Hope the picture uploaded....I get this screen using 4.1.
Do this first : flash with odin 3.09.3 the original firmware 4.1
: select "AP" choose the at&t firmware it comes with 4.1 android version
then update to kit kat , rename the file on internet called xxxx.cfg to xxxxxx.zip
put this file in your micro sd card, reboot on recovery stock and flash the update , and get 4.4.2 android kk, then , download the apk 4.1 , do not connect the tablet online to the website of king root , this method does not work, it is with the apk 4.1 version of kingroot and done!
Importante : tablet on mode developer option and usb debugging check
None of the king root versions I found work. Gets to 24% then reboots.
No luck yet. Will keep waiting.
That was my experience as well. Not sure if this is viable based on my experience.
It's definitely a feasible process, it worked fine for me. I'm really confused why it works for some people but not for others...
For those still trying to gain root access using Kingroot... here is a link to a few different versions of "kingroot", a version of "kinguser" (their version of supersu), and a version of "purify" (their version of a memory manager). If it didn't work easily, it may still work with a bit more trial and error, as it did for me (after losing root yesterday).
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3w...ew?usp=sharing
Yesterday morning, i woke up to find that I had somehow lost root on my tablet... I tried to re-root using the previous process, and it no longer seemed to work. Soooo, I spent a good chunk of time figuring out how to get root back yesterday. The good news is, I got root back... the process however, was somewhat convoluted.
So I tried to find a step by step reproduce-able way to get root every time - and I was not successful at coming up with an exact process that works every time... I was however able to get rooted every time, but the process seemed to vary a bit each time... so trial and error seems to be the key here. I experimented for hours doing this... gaining root, uninstalling root, and retrying - all in the name of trying to help others figure out how to do it on their device.
So here is the basics of how I achieved root... DISCLAIMER - I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOU, YOUR ACTIONS, OR THE FUNCTIONALITY OF YOUR DEVICE - BEFORE/DURING/OR AFTER YOU TRYING ANY OF THESE PROCESSES THAT I TRIED. THINGS CAN GO WRONG - YOU CAN END UP WITH PROBLEMS - A BRICKED TABLET, A DIVORCE, A DEAD DOG, OR HIT BY A NUCLEAR BLAST. ANY OF WHICH, I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR. IF YOU PUSH THE BUTTONS, ITS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.
Since there is no factory image for 4.4.2 on our device, proceed with caution... if something goes really wrong, you will have a paperweight. There is no Kies or Odin to save you... Also, my knox warranty void count shows as 1 and custom device status, so if you are worried about that be aware...
1) download all the files in the folder at the link above, extract them from the folder and put all the apk's on your device, but dont install them yet (doesn't matter internal/external memory)
2) Boot into stock recovery and wipe cache. reboot.
3) Install kingroot v4.0.1.237
4) open kingroot and try the rooting process. the device will likely reboot at around 18 to 25% or so... once the device reboots, open kingroot again and let it finish the rooting process. If it works - you should go buy lottery tickets, because you just got really lucky! If it doesn't work, proceed to the next step.
5) Install Purify. Run Purify process. Take notice after running the process - at the top of the app does it say root is achieved?? If not, return to step 4 and try rooting again. If that does not work...
6) Install kinguser. open kinguser, does it say you have root access? If not, try the prompt to repair root access (if it shows up)... if not, return to step 4, and try to root again. If no root, try step 5 again. If not, try step 6 again...
7) If still no root access, uninstall kingroot, and install one of the other versions of kingroot... try all of the above again. If still no root... uninstall all 3 apps and start over at step 2 using a different version of kingroot to start with.
I wish I could say there was a logical rhyme or reason for what works and what doesn't... but there didn't appear to be an exact process that works every time. Fortunately, I was able to get root if I tried long enough and tried different combinations of processes. Periodically clearing the cache from the stock recovery really seemed to help increase my odds of success when things weren't going well.
Occassionally the process landed me in a bootloop at the at&t screen... after holding the power button for an eternity, the device would power off - then I would reboot and it would boot normally.
Additionally, I tried on many occasions to swap "kinguser" with "supersu" using an app call "Super-Sume". Sometimes the process worked, and successfully removed kingroot, kinguser, and purify - while keeping root and installing Supersu... Other times the process removed the kinguser, kingroot, and purify - but I also lost root. I tried both the paid and free versions of Super-Sume, but the free version is the one that seemed to work best.
It's up to you if you want to go through all of this - it was tiresome... but if you really want root, maybe trying something like this might help you - maybe not. I also noticed that kinguser seems to sometimes have root access, sometimes not... so sometimes it was just a matter of opening one of the 3 apps and re-running a process or two and root would be restored... not sure why that happens - which is why i opted to use super-sume to remove kingroot once root was achieved. but we will see if i keep root now... if not, at least I know the process above seemed to work for me.
Thanks Dandroid, I will try your suggestions. I got this tablet 2 months ago, rooted it right away with Kingroot, worked great. But was suspicious of the app, so used supersume to remove. Had root for a few more days then lost it. My first thought was the Samsung Security updates patched the root. So I download Kingroot and run it again and it doesnt work anymore. Why is root not working? Either the Samsung security updates closed the loophole or somehow Kingroot punishes you for removing their app. I believe Kingroot puts you on a blacklist because they have your IP address and IMEI. These are just my suspicions. So Dandroid do you still have root after all this time?

For those still trying to gain root access using Kingroot... here is a link to a few different versions of "kingroot", a version of "kinguser" (their version of supersu), and a version of "purify" (their version of a memory manager). If it didn't work easily, it may still work with a bit more trial and error, as it did for me (after losing root yesterday).

Yes, I still have root.
I recently read in a forum for a different device that king root is actually a temporary root??? I have not seen that said anywhere else, just in that forum, so not sure if that was device specific?? But that does seem to explain why we lost root...
Since I used super-sume to remove king root and retain root, that may be why I still have root. As soon as I installed supersu, I also checked the survival mode box on supersu to try and keep root.

None of the king root versions I found work. Gets to 24% then reboots.
No luck yet. Will keep waiting.

try this

It's supposed to reboot... after it reboots, reopen the KingRoot app and let it finish the process. The English version of the app clearly says that it will need to reboot and then finish the rooting process.
I used the computer version. Worked prefect. Then unistalled with superseme

I appreciate everybody's input on this. It seems that some of us have been successful. I however have not.
Is there any way to get a system image from one of you folks that are already rooted, so the rest of us can load in our tablets? I don't know if this is a stupid question I'm not that well versed in loading via Odin.
King root v4.1
It seemed to work fine with my note 8 I'm running sgh-i467 4.4.2 but yet to find any custom rom, when there is one made please let me know! Just rooted today and I love the freedom but would like to learn a lot more about the different stuff I could do with this, any suggestions??
till this newest ver, 46.2, Kingroot never worked on mine but somehow it rooted my device with this new version..
Not sure why, but I love this having root on Note8 now.
