My CM 12 rom will freeze with the screen off. Is there a way to reset the phone without pulling the battery?
Verizon variant.
I never found a way. e.e
It does reset "sometimes" if you hold the power button for upto 10 seconds, not eveytime though depending on freezing circumstances.
@blindguyinanorgy I have a vs985 and it'll reset to avoid a battery pull if you press vol down + power and hold for @ 20-25 seconds. It'll seem like forever so count it down. I don't think the d855(posters above) has that option.

On my SGS I could press volume down + power button for 10 second and the phone would reboot. This does not seem to work for the Nexus.. Is there any way to soft reboot the phone to avoid doing a battery pull? (removing and putting back the back cover is tedious!)
Anyone know?
Unfortunately, no.
Since power+vol down is also the screenshot function, I will try power+vol up if/when my GN freezes up the next time.
Long pressing power for 10-20 seconds does not work either.
I'm also looking forward for such a tweak. My touch screen sometimes freeze and I need to force reboot it.
i have never had a phone that the battery cannot be removed, what happens if a program or the os locks? how do you reset it. i now have a dell streak and today it would not turn on and i had to remove the battery to get it to boot up. is there a button combo that forces a reboot?
thanks
Hold the power button for ~10 seconds, simulates a battery pull & forces a reset.
thanks! i think i will pull the trigger and get it

I tried to yank the battery, while holding down the power volume up/down to get into recovery but no luck. tried to yank battery and hold down volumne up/ down trying to get into download mode but also no luck
wondering if there might something i can try to get my phone back working
take care
i tried to take the phone apart to see if the power button was stuck but still now luck
Sounds like a power button issue. Its not that it gets stuck physically, the power switch gets messed up and acts as if its being held down. You can replace the switch or try a ghetto fix. I had to remove the power button from the case from my brothers phone. I took it out then plugged the hole with it by taping it on from the outside.
There are a few ROMs out there that allow you to use alternate buttons to turn off the phone and use volume keys to wake it up. So you will only need the power button to turn on the phone when its off completely. For my brothers phone I use a toothpick since I removed the power button.
It is just beginning to mess up on my phone bit it wasn't a severe enough case for me to remove the power button.
I would recommend trying to fidget with the button a bit, trying to see if you can get it out of the power loop (endless vibrating). What I do is pull the battery and press the button a few times. I even flick that corner of the phone a few times. Then I put the batter back in and see if it stopped cycling. If not I try to press the button a few more times and or give it a flick or two with the battery in. There seems to be no direct method that works but it eventually stabalizes.
If it does stabalize, I'd recommend testing to see how sensitive it is. If you can't put it in your pocket or even the slightest movement makes it cycle. I'd say you need to remove the power button or have the power switch replaced. If it stabilizes I would just get a ROM with the options I mentioned and stop touching the power button.
This is a strange one.
HTC 10 2PS6500, Android 8. Has been working fine. Today I took the phone out of the pocket, to find that it's been turned off. Strange, I know the battery was almost full, so it's not a power down due to low battery.
Tried to turn it on with the power button, didn't work.
Held the power and volume up + down at the same time, a few seconds later the phone vibrated and powered up. Battery at 92%. No sign of what might have happened. Phone was working. I wondered what happened but soon forgot about it.
A few hours later, I charged the phone back to 100%. While using it, the screen timed out, when I pressed the power button again, a message popped up saying "HTC recovered from an abnormal reset, send it to HTC" or something like that, and it tells me to tap it twice to send. I tapped it twice, the screen came up. I have the option of Send to HTC or Cancel. I pressed Cancel. The screen froze after that.
Buttons are unresponsive. I pressed the power and volume buttons to reset it, it went black.
Since then I have not been able to get it to respond.
Power button alone - nothing. Tried even holding in excess of 1 minute.
Power + Volume Down - nothing. Held for 10 seconds, 20 seconds, over 1 minute.
Powr + Volume Up + Volume Down - nothing. Held for different durations of time, no difference.
Connected it to a charger, no response, the light up top where it lits when charging does not light up.
It's completely unresponsive. No boot screen, no vibration, nothing at all.
Any idea what else I can try?
well some new development...
I was trying to do the hard reset on the phone periodically. Sometimes with the charger plugged in (but no light on top indicating it's taking any charge). A day later, I was doing another hard reset (not expecting it to respond) but it vibrates and boots up. Since then it has been behaving normally. Strange that battery was at 21%, when it was at 80% when the screen froze. I charged it to 100% then backed up the data while I had it on.
I got about a day of usage out of it, then while I was on a browser scrolling down on a web page, the screen froze again. Battery at 75%. After trying to reset it, the screen went black. Since then, no response on attempts to hard reset.
I have a feeling if I leave it alone for a day and try it it will come back alive.
Doing a search on the net yield nothing except I did see a post someone made saying after the screen froze had to wait till the battery drains 100%, then charge it back up and it will boot again. Is this what is happening? If it's bricked how is it consuming battery?
Anyone has any idea sure would like to hear it.
Hi,
My Pixel 6 Pro screen went black, but I can still hear and feel that the phone is working. I used the volume up + power button to reboot it and now I touch the phone and I feel it vibrate as it's registering the touches. I also see at the bottom of the screen some white stripes flashing. It seems that the screen is damaged and I need a replacement screen.
Now my issue is that I can't seem to turn it off. As the screen is black, the only way to shut it down would be with hardware keys. But up until now, I haven't been able to figure out a way to turn the phone off.
Does anyone know how I can turn of the phone?
To replace the screen, obviously I need to turn it off first...
Usually long pressing the power button, but it may be different. As long as it gets fixed within a month or so it you can let it discharge until it auto shuts down. If more than a year old replacing the battery when repaired is a good idea anyway...
I tried long pressing the power button with no luck.
I tried volume down + power button for 20 seconds, didn't work either.
I tried volume up + power button for 20 seconds, this I think reboots the phone.

Click to collapse
Power button only might take 20 or so seconds.
Otherwise just like it sit until repaired.
Power button + vol up + vol down. Keep holding down once you feel the phone vibrate. Takes you to the bootloader screen
The battery died.. so that's good!
Thanks anyways
