Stagefright - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have no updates available for my H815. When I did a stagefright detection a week ago there were no vulnerabilities detected. Since then I have rooted my phone. Now it's completely vulnerable besides 1 type out of 6. Not sure if it was the root or what? Anyone know?

Hey prot-,
If you have used the low effort root method, you might have flashed the 10c version which didn't had the stagefright patch.
Same happend to me and now have to get and then flash an update via costume recovery
Hope I could help you
Pancan

BySezerSimsek and Marcosuper7 got rooted versions were stage fright is fixed which you can push the way you pushed the initial rooted image. No need for twrp to get a fixed version.

Excellent thank you. Flashing marcosupers H815 10e has fixed the issues and I haven't lost any data.

TMO Update

Just got my D851 with stock 5.0.1 preinstalled.
Its telling me to update the phone.
Has anyone updated via the air method?
Not sure what it is but wanted to be sure if its MM or 5.1.1 before I moved forward

As a rule of thumb if you plan to root, you should NEVER update. Updating will usually patch any exploits the devs use to root our phones. It depends on what you want to do with your phone down the line.... Update at your own risk.
@tiguy99, also it's definitely not MM. I'm not even sure 5.1.1 was ever released either.
I know the D851 has been unlocked from the get-go (didn't need bumping like the others in the past) but as the previous post alluded to, the OTA just might lock it down. Be sure and be careful.

Sorry, my post was not helpful. Here is something you can do: long press on the update notification and click on the "info" icon and disable the notification. This way you are less likely to accidentally update, and it won't bother you as much.

If it is a stock D851 running on Tmo, then the update is probably the recent update of 20e (released back on June 9) to 20g (released back in October). There has been a lot of that just within the last 60 days. However, it is still Android 5.0.1. Tmo has NOT upgraded our G3 to anything beyond 5.0.1 yet, but has committed to updating us to Marshmallow Android 6, probably sometime in the next 3 months.
As for the update, all 20g did was patch the Stagefright vulnerability that had been discovered back in August. That was a vulnerability in Lollipop wordwide on all carriers. Look at your phone info under settings. If you are on 20e, it will not hurt at all to upgrade. But in any case, the update you are seeing is DEFINITELY NOT 5.1.1 and it is DEFINITELY NOT Marshmallow. It is still 5.0.1. Good luck.
Please hit the THANKS button if I helped you.
I got mine week ago and updated it didn't root but used Newest Root Method in general section and finally got it.

That being said, I made the mistake of updating. Now I'm having a very hard time trying to root my D851 20g. Can I restore to Kitkat for the purpose of rooting?
Dude this is the wrong forum for a question like this. Should be in Q&A or General. You'll get better answers there.

No need. Google 'Newest root method' D851 xda download file thru your browser double click on windows batch file. Follow prompts. Hope this helps you out.
I too got my D851 last week. It had KK 4.2.2 and wanted to update. So I decided to go ahead and do the OTA. The final result was 5.0.1 D85120g. I don't think there are any higher updates yet. Rooted without issue using Newest Root Method mentioned above, again, without issue.

However, if you are still unsure, you can always downgrade to a lower version. You will have to do a search for D85110r in the KDZ file version and find the loader for that file. Took me a little time to find it but I have both the KDZ file and loader.

I tried that 1 click method and it failed. I have the &D851 20g Lollipop 5.0.1. Any idea why it's failing other than error on my behalf?

I believe it's because you've downloaded 20G. Probably got patched. Did the method I mentioned work out for you?

I think it was just to remove the malware and fix the youtube app.
brick, Not Command
What a company. They fixed the malware. How on earth did they release a version with malware at all!?
Just one rookie question: Is it possible to update directly from v. 20151203 to this recent release (skipping the february "malware release") ?
Today I've tried to do so but was unable to install release 20160319 neither directly OTA nor by downloading OTA version and flashing it with TWRP.
Bricked for me too. It does not turn on anymore.
Malware is gone. Youtube is already working. However, does someone know about some reaction in response to that problem with malware?
Elephone P8000 20160319 ROM update
My OTA is not working. I get an Error while it is in Recovery mode. Is there a link for this update for flashing?

see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil
I tried to instal the update with OTA local update (Elephone_P8000_20160319211540 incremental OTA ) but my recovery shows an error and my installation was aborted. Is there a full update (2016) wich i can flash from my pc? i am sick of the malware!
Can anybody post a full firmware image (flashable via SPFlash or CWM) AFTER having upgraded to 20160319? I cannot use OTA since my phone is rooted......
I updated and now have a problem of "sudden shutdown". I think there is a bug with this ROM

Bootloader Unlock and OTA

Hi I just wanted some confirmation that unlocking bootloader doesn't block me from getting OTA updates from Google, since I haven't gotten an OTA for the latest build yet (The May update). I'm hoping this is only cause I'm in India and it hasn't pushed to us yet. I've enrolled in the Android Beta Program to test if OTA is really broken (since it sends an OTA with the Android N image.)
I haven't modified anything, I tried flashing TWRP but it didn't stick cause I didn't know I had to go into the recovery and modify the system/boot, so I still have the stock android recovery.
Any confirmation will give me a lot of peace of mind, cause I value getting OTAs and not having to manually flash it. If it has indeed been broken, I want to know if relocking would fix it and if relocking would wipe data again. Thanks for your help
EDIT: Just got the OTA for the N preview, so I guess it's just a roll out thing then. Just want to leave this here for anyone else who's new to nexus devices and was wondering the same.

Simply having an unlocked bootloader won't stop you from receiving OTAs. I don't believe they've even began pushing the OTA for the May update.

You need to flash stock boot and recovery images to receive it or alternatively use chainfires flashfire app.

Doesnt rooting void official oxygen updates?

Hello, so i 've been on oxygen 4.0 on my OnePlus 3 for about a week now, and flashed that version via new TWRP. I am rooted with custom recovery. But just now browsing website, and I got a notification that update is available to 4.0.2 lol. OFFICIAL UPDATE. I thought that it is not possible to get official updates when rooted/with custom recovery. Is there something wrong going on? Should I Update? When I was on Oxygen 3.2.8 I wanted to get update using VPN, but had no luck, notification never appeared. Should I officially update this official oxygen 4.0.2 version? is it safe? I don't want to brick my OP3 :/
Don't, I was on the same position and I did and now I have soft bricked my phone and I am here looking for a solution.

Thanks. I knew something sketchy is going around lol. I will have to update using twrl method then. This Update is probably only for stock recovery.

just found out that flashing anything under 1gb officially, while you are on TWRP will lead on soft brick. So you will have to flash full OTA zip on your TWRP recovery to fix. BTW, what is your TWRP version? thanks

Actually, I just fixed it and came here to let you know , all I needed to do (I am not an expert on these stuff so it took me a while), is to install an updated unofficial TWRP to avoid the pattern bug, because it kept TWRP from reading my internal storage, once I fixed that the phone turned on with the newer 4.0.2 version.

OTA SideLoad question

Hey all, I'm still on June 1st security patch (NCX26.2), T-Mobile variant and stock, with bootloader unlocked which seems to be preventing my phone from updating to the latest OTA. I'm getting served with NCX26.7, but the update keeps failing.
Could someone post step by step on how to update my phone to the most recent rootable OTA (perhaps sideload?), and then what would be the easiest way to root. I don't mind wiping the entire device as long as it gets me to the latest software patch.
*EDIT* Now looking at the settings, it seems like I've flashed my Kernel months ago, which is likely what's causing my phone not to update. If I follow the Flash-all guide, will that reset the kernel to stock? Screenshot attached.
Many thanks!
