To Root or Not to Root? - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My current Nexus 10 is on it last legs and I decided to pick up a Galaxy Tab T800 10.5 inch wifi only in good/Used condition on ebay and should receive it next week.
While I await it, I'm starting to look at its rooting process and if I should root it not. I assume it is coming unrooted, but won't know for sure till I get it and what version of Android it currently has. I'm not completely new to rooting as I have done it before on my Nexus 10 and Note 2 phone (yeah, time to upgrade). Its just been a while since I need to root something.
But do you think rooting it and going with a custom Rom is that much better than the Stock Rom?
Also, I did only buy a 16GB version, as the majority of all of my video's are on a home server and I use either XBMC/Kodi and BSPlayer to connect and watch things. But I remember with my Nexus 10 it was also possible to Map a Folder to a local server. Does anyone know if that is possible with Galaxy Tab? The ability to map a folder/drive is great to navigate and view pdf's, pictures etc.
Thanks
PT

Previous to my S1 10.5" I had a rooted Nexus 10. I rooted without tripping Knox to retain my warranty. Although I had my S1 for several months without rooting (5.0.2) there will a few things I missed:
- Viper4Android (superior audio replacement)
- GMD Gesture Control (including immersion mode)
- Enhanced Power menu
- Titanium backups
- Full RW access to the internal microSD card
- The ability to theme the TouchWiz UI
There are more reasons to root but those are the first few that I desperately missed from the N10.
The free ES File Explorer can map CIFS/SAMBA network drives and with root can access the entire internal storage with RW permissions. I use Plex/MXPlayer to access my NAS video collection without transcoding but the setup you mentioned would also work well even if you didn't root.
I found that after having full RW access to my MicroSD card (64GB) that you could do what ever you wanted as far as mapping is concerned. I get Titanium Backup to write straight to the mSD card and have never seen my 16GB device as too small, it just does not happen. With that said I am not a gamer so take the comment with a grain of salt. My mSD card is mainly filled with backups and music files.
As you are likely to no longer be under warranty I would advise rooting using the CF method which includes TWRP then you can try which ever custom ROM catches your fancy and switch safely as long as to take nandroid backups with the enhanced recovery.

Thank's for the great info and feedback. I'll plan to root it when it arrives (hopefully this weekend). But have 2 more general questions as you seem pretty familiar wit the tablet.
I know its personal preference. But have you found a preferred custom Rom you like? And are you sure you ESFile Explorer can actually Map a network CIFS/Samba share location? I can use ESFileExplorer to access my server and navigate the network shares. But I have not figured out how to actually map the shares to a local folder on the tablets. I'll have to revisit that ability separately though as its not big deal as XBMC/Kodi and others can still access the shares.
But when the shares are actually mapped to local folder, you can navigate them from pretty much any native app.

As I rooted but preserved my warranty by not tripping the Knox counter (I can return to pure uprooted stock), I must keep the Samsung locked bootloader. The means I have limited choices in custom ROMs and no choice in custom kernels. The only ROM I could flash is Ironman. With all that said I decided to stay with stock 5.0.2 and just augment it with root apps that I listed in my previous post. That gave me all the custom ROM features I regularly use.
I think now I understand better what you wanted from mapping. So ES File Manager would not give you what you wanted as its cifs/samba maps are usable by other apps only when you use the ES file manager UI. For example click on a CIFS mapped video file in the ES file Manager UI and an associated video player plays the video. In the past I used XBMC on Android and that version included CIFS/Samba drivers that allowed me to access my network attached video collection. I suspect that feature still exists.
Now if you had video files on either the internal storage or external microSD card and wanted those directories available to XBMC the internal storage would be no issue but I think you need to use an app like Stick mount for the microSD. Stick mount creates a symbolic link on the internal storage (\sdcard) to directories on the microSD card allowing any app to access those files as if they were located on internal storage. That may accomplish what you want.
I still maybe misinterpreting what your trying to accomplish with mapping but I'm fairly sure one way or another you can get what your looking for especially as you'll be rooted.

Yeah. It was tricky on the Nexus 10 to mount a CIFS/Samba share and needed specific cifs.ko and other modules. It was sorta of hit and miss and I remember most said it worked best when you mounted them to the /mnt/obb system file folder location. If you google it, you'll find bunch of topics leading back to posts on xda about it.
Its the same concept of mapping a share with a PC, etc. Once done, any program/app should see that information as a local system folder. So you could launch any app and if needed, navigate to your network share files to open a document., text file, pdf viewer, and so depending on what the app was looking for. Even ESFile Explorer would then see your network shares as a local system directory. And you could actually save your titanium backups directly to your NAS or network server, if you wanted to.

[Q] Cloud (Dropbox, Google Drive, Box.com) Encryption/Decryption

What programs are you using to en-/decrypt files/folders/containers on Windows & Android for i.e. Dropbox, Google Drive, Box.com ?
Boxcryptor
Any multi solutions?
Why have encryption?
you can use any archive format with a password and open it using zArchive, or if you using truecrypt, you can open the container with EDS lite... there's also an app called cryptonite, for boxcryptor alternative...
Or wuala cloud storage, file encryption is done directly on the phone...

As Jlowe (i think), simply because I do not want companies like Dropbox can have access to some of my private data.
I am ready to pay a service but I do not want to be spied on.
I do not trust Dropbox, Google Drive, Facebook ...
I use them because they are convenient but I'm careful.
Thanks for the answers!
Archives are not a bad idea, but you need first a complete local download and decrypt this, so you need a lot of storage and a fast internet connection.
If you are interested in this you can try also foldersync lite.
The best solution for me is, storing an encrypted folder online and just download the stuff you need.
But there's no program which supports i.e. EncFs for multiple clouds... so w8in
Concerning encryption: Yeah perhaps it's quite senseless, because if you are downloading it from the cloud on your Android mobile phone, at least Google knows everything
Encfs is definitely the way to go. For android we have Cryptonite which is in beta but works rather well on my Nexus s. Needs root probably to mount the encfs. Foldersync has a feature to pre-encrypt for Amazon S3 but this is not free software. On the desktop there are browser extensions for on-the-fly encryption for Google Docs. Maybe one day , Chrome for Android or even Firefox will get this. For now, encfs.

Cryptonite doesn't require root to decrypt local or Dropbox volumes. This should work on all devices with Android >= 2.2.
Mounting local EncFS volumes, on the other hand, requires root and FUSE. Some ICS stock kernels may support that - you'd have to test it. Let me know if it works, I'd be very interested.

ditto
I use the Windows client which maps an R: drive for me on startup on work laptop and also the Android app.
Works a treat and gives me some comfort that I can store work files in the cloud and have access to them when I need outside of the work supplied infrastructure.

I use Dropsync to transfer a local copy of the encrypted files I have on dropbox onto my external sdcard on the phone. Then I use boxcryptor to access those local files. Works great and can be configured to be a two way mirror if you are likely to alter the files in the phone, I believe but have not tested.
Either Cryptonite or BoxCryptor
If you create secure folder with BoxCryptor FIRST, you can decrypt the same folder with Cryptonite. BoxCryptor has more features but important thing is that if they ever go bust, the open source Cryptonite (Encfs) will still be able to let you access your data.
My setup (rooted phone):
MyData.bc folder on SD card is created by BoxCryptor.
I do mount of encfs volume using Cryptonite and then save all files docs using normal android file explorer to the crytonite.mnt folder. That's where I keep my important files.
That same folder MyData.bc is then synced to Dropbox and Box using FolderSync.
I also use FolderSync to sync some other foolders I encrypt.
Now, important thing for compatibility of your archives is that you keep one .encfs.xml file accross all ancrypted folders. That way, you can move encr. files between various encfs folders and you can still decrypt them using any .encfs.xml file. Just have good, looooong password.

Trio 4.3 Root and Google Play Store

Hi,
Like everyone else I have to say"Follow these instructions at your own risk" I do not take any responsibility for any thing that happens. It worked for me so it may work for you!
Trio 4.3 Internet Tablet M4302 Model Trio 4.3MID 4.0C by Mach Speed Technologies
I just picked this tablet up. I have successfully rooted it and have installed a working Play Store. I now have access to all my apps that I use on my Galaxy Note 10.1.
To root I used the instructions from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
Once I had root I wanted to get Google Play Store on the tab. I found a couple of places that had information concerning adding Play Store to other devices and kind of pieced the info together to come up with this solution.
1. Download gapps for ICS. http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip
2. Unzip file
3. Navigate to the " System/app " folder and find "phonesky.apk and setupwizard.apk"
(You will need to copy these two files to your tablet)
4. Once files are on tablet use something like "Root Explorer" to copy both to the "system/app" folder of the tablet.
(The folders will need to be mounted as "R/W" so they can be written to )
5. After the files are copied to the proper folder, you need to edit the permissions for both.
6. In "Root Explorer" long press on each file and choose "permissions"
7. Edit permissions to read "Owner: Read, Write" "Group: Read" "Others: Read"
8. Reboot and launch Play Store
Frys has this for $49...thinking I might need to order it as a music player for my 2 month old!
I used this method to get Google Play Store to work, But its not rooted. At least you can download the files.
http://nwteche.com/red7_blog/instal...-or-most-other-tablets-running-android-2-3-3/
works great thanks successfully rooted and installed google play on my trio stealth lite 4.3" internet tablet m4302 runing android 4.0.4 :victory:
Mine came rooted
Thank you for this post!
Just wanted to give a heads up for anyone who finds this thread through Google or whatever, like I did, that it's possible your device is already rooted.
I bought mine today from Big Lots - branded as a: Trio 4.3" Touch Screen Media Player for Android by Mach Speed Technologies - on the box (well blister plastic wrap thing that is Hades to open...). The instruction user's manual, however just calls it a Trio 4.3" Internet Tablet.
(Specs from the box.)
Android OS 4.0
4.3" Capacitive Touch Screen
4GB Internal Memory with Micro SD Slt (Up to 32GB)
Built-in WiFi
Speaker
Auto Rotate for Portrait & Landscape Viewing
1.2GHz Processor
Rechargable Li-on Battery
Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you, and let everyone know to check your device first. There may be better ways to check, but there are a couple of apps in the Amazon App Store called "Root Checker" - don't get the "My Root Checker" - it has crazy pop-up ads - I deleted it in seconds. But just check to see if your device is rooted. It could save you some time, and potential headaches.
Well, jsut confirming that this guide works. In the root post, I used the stadard root method...if you are like me and got this for a little one, they wanted apps. Of course I couldnt open until today...but it really works. I just dowloaded the root explorer apk (a quick google search worked) and installed it...i can upload a screen shot if necessary

Dude, does anybody have the factory rom? I don't even have custom recovery but, I fukt up and tried to install cm9 and it says to reset the phone but, the touchscreen wont work. I dunno if I'm gonna be able to fix this or not. I've hard bricked a lot of android phones and still fixed em somehow so maybe I can. Any help?

My Trio also had root access right out of the box. Followed the instructions right down to obtaining the "root explorer" apk. Worked like a charm, no issues at all. Now I just need to find a custom rom that will perform better than stock. Thanks for all the info.
Hulu Plus
Since this is the best thread for this tablet I've found. I wanted to ask if anyone has gotten Hulu to work? I have installed many different versions including the latest and all of them will play the ads just fine, but once it gets the episode it just sits there and buffers and buffers and buffers. Devices on the same WIFI have no issues. I am even talking with Hulu suppor about it and of course they are playing dumb about it and just giving me standard troubleshooting. Is this tablet blocked by Hulu somehow because it's chinese made? I don't get a region error, which I can force with proxies and such. I just get buffering and buffering and buffering. Any help would be much appreciated.
I need firmware or update.zip im stuck on boot screen.

[Q] How to free up space on amazon fire tv?

Hi all,
I rooted my fire tv. i downgrade firmware and installed CWM, install rbox bootloader, then upgrade pre-rooted firmware by rbox. Now when i check under setting --> system -> about i see 3.61gb free space from 5.49gb available space. I don't have a lot app installed in my rooted fire tv so i didnt think what i have installed would taken up 2gb. Here is what i have installed.
Google play store, kodi, llama, es file explore, busybee box, supersu, chrome, firefox and the whatever was required to gain root access, upgrade and downgrading firmware and whatever app is pre-installed from pre-rooted firmware.
Is there way to check which apps and files are taking up the most space and how do you free up space?
Also, does this sound right that only 3.59gb is left. At one point during my root process when i was pushing update.zip file thru adb to downgrade firmware, it took a very long so i exit out of adb (i simply click on "x" bar to close the connection) and started again but i am not sure maybe i installed update.zip file 2x. How do i check? How do ensure i don't have any unnecessary file on fire tv internal drive.
Thank you
I have 3 FireTVs, all rooted and they have between 3.0G to 3.4G free space so I say your free space is within reasonable range

hi thanks for posting back. Makes me feel better but still out of 8gb user only has 3.5gb, not ideal. i wonder where did the 5gb go.
I am curious to hear from others to see how they cleaned up space, if there are any methods.
I'd have to say kodi might be the culprit taking a lot of space with excessive data storage.
Anything similar to xbmc can be a resource hog for storage.

You don't get 8GB of usable space. I think it is only about 5GB. So you are using about 1.5 GB for apps. Not too bad if you are running Kodi.
An easy way to check where files are taking up space is to use the "sdcard analyze" function in esfile explorer. Its under the tools section. Also, with esfile explorer, you can push files from your phone to the firetv pretty easy too. Select whatever file you want to send on your phone, under options choose send, and make sure esfile explorer is open on the firetv too. The firetv prompts you for where you want to save the file.

You can free up quite a bit by pushing these advanced settings to
<advancedsettings>
<pathsubstitution>
<substitute>
<from>/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/org.xbmc.xbmc/files/.xbmc/userdata/Thumbnails/</from>
<to>/storage/usb/drive1/xbmcthumbnails/</to>
</substitute>
</pathsubstitution>
</advancedsettings>
You need to amend to kodi instread of xbmc if you're running 14.0 or higher AND my external is mounted by adbFire mount drives persistent. If you're using stickmount it would be sda (forget exact path?)
Once pushed and confirmed working, all your thumbnails will dissapear. Just go into userdata/database and delete textures13. Then restart xbmc.
Afterwards I also delete the thumbnails folder on internal. Oh yes...make sure you have a folder on external named xbmcthumbnails.
This should immediately clear about 600 mb and keep in mind you typically add more to your library so the amount it saves long term could be huge.

That's actually a good question. I've been using these so long I don't have a memory of exactly how fast they loaded before. I'll say this--they populate fast enough for me to keep using them. I use usb 3.0. I think it's essential based on how big my library is and the fact I use aeon nox with additional fanart.
But, I'd be very interested in seeing if you or someone else sees a significant lag in load times. You can always delete the xml if you find it slow.
Just an fyi I got these from an xda member awhile back. Since then lots of people have tried them and so far I haven't hear complaints, but I'd still like feedback from someone who can compare.
Another suggestion is to pre-scrape all the necessary support files with a media manager of your choice (e.g. fanart, icon, content info, etc.) and switch to local info only on the scraper for the collection. It depends also on how you have your collection organized from a folder perspective.
I found this to be fastest and lightest on local storage (obviously because the "library" is already built) especially when you have a household of streamers. You have all the content centralized on your NAS already. It's silly for streaming box to build the library and re-download the content each time from the Internet (especially if your like me as a perpetual media player tinkerer).
Edit: For clarity, I mean a "Library manager." Look on the Kodi wiki for links to various clients on your preferred OS.

That's it. As long as the two are on the aame network, it should pick up the firetv as a target.
To clarify, on the phone, long click the file to send, and select send. The firetv ip adress will show up and allow you to send the file. When the prompt shows up on the firetv(provided that esfile explorer is the active and open app), accept the transfer and select tge location to store the transferred file.

ROM Part 3 : http://goo.gl/l1zKh5
To combine 3 parts files above into 1 file just use WINRAR, then extract the files into ZIP format. If any problem with the ROM, maybe because the ROM have corrupted during the download process, you can try to re-download the ROM.
2. Install the ROM Manager on your Vodafone Smart Tab 4g . Get it from Google Play Store, then install the clockwork mod recovery. You also can use ROM Installer application from JRummy Apps Inc.(Get it from Google Play Store).
3. Connect your Vodafone Smart Tab 4g to your PC employing the USB information cable. Copy the “ROM.zip” file you downloaded to the SD memory card.
4. Restart your device in the recovery mode using ROM Manager. As soon as in Recovery Mode, go to ROM Manager and select backup/restore to back-up your information.
5. From the Recovery Menu do a total data erase (including Delvik Cache). When completed, go back to Recovery Principal Menu and choose Flash ROM from SD Card. Navigate the location you copied the ”ROM.zip” file and follow the directions for installing Android 5.0 Lollipop on your Vodafone Smart Tab 4g . As soon as the installation is over, just reboot your Vodafone Smart Tab 4g device, and here you go, you’ve just upgraded it to the new Android 5.0 Lollipop.
Hi:
did you tried it? Have you got root on your Vodafone Smart Tab 4G? I found out a thread with the root file/method, but the file link is broken

I don't understand why some prick upload all tools (root utility and ROMs) for Vodafone Smart Tab 4G to that disreputable server http://downloadsafe.org/? For download it want to send payment SMS messages!!!!! :crying:
If you want my opinion, i think that this supposed lollipop version is fake...
On another forum I've seen this and reports that it works.
I don't have the device (still deciding wether to buy it or not) so I can't test it

I have same issue. Apps can work with data on SD Card, for example RawDroid can edit photos, save/delete files. But App2SD functionality is still not supported. It should work with Link2SD app and 2 partitions on SD card. The reason is emulated external storage in internal memory. I didn't find yet how to turn this of, or how to change it.

I've tried Link2SD, but with no success. The best i got was to use MountFolder to move the applications data to the external SD card. With this, I've recovered some good precious space (for example, Minion Rush was using 330MB that where freed).

Thanks for tip FolderMount (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devasque.fmount) works like a charm.
If anyone wants the source code, here it is:
Code:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/alcatel/files/VF_SmartTab4G_20140923.tar.xz
It was awesome if we could get a rom for this tablet =)
People say it is based on Alcatel Pop 8S tablet, but I have never seen this tablet on sale, neither original roms, nothing about it.
Only alcatel website has some info about it, but not much: http://www.alcatelonetouch.com/global-en/products/tablets/pop_8s.html#.VOPaQfmsVoc
Anyone managed to remove system apps?
Titanium backup says it can't find the apks..
In Android 4.4, apps can't write the sd-card, it's a security thing. But there are apps, which enables sd write. And yes, we have source, but for ROMs we also need recovery, and a developer. But fingers crossed.

Anyone tried that? can you confirm that it works?
Any other method that roots 4.4.4?
Yes and it is work. Only "bug" after the root is: every time you reboot your tablet you will got a message that says android is upgrade-ing and continues to updating apps. But it is work.

I stuck on step 7. Finding device... But I did step 5...
What u mean updating apps.? Updates all apps from store?
No, optimezing. Its that thing when android take an update and after that the apps is optimezed. This happening after each reboot. About the root process: if you use win 8, 8.1 you wont be able to rootbso easly because of the drivers. Try with win xp or 7. My advice: use XP. I did it with it.

So, to get this straight: we can actually root the Vodafone smart tab 4g and flash custom roms??

[Q]

Hi
Just got my TAB S 10.5 wifi. Painstakingly been trying to setup the pc so the tablet can talk to it. And installed ES File explorer so I can simply copy & paste my music to my SD card when ever I want.
But when I came to it, ES explorer will not let me do it, it says it needs to be rooted, which I don't want to do, I did on my S3 but that was purely to installed Viper for android.
2 questions:
Does anyone know if lollipop will sort out this permission problem when it's released.
and if not, is there a way to write to my SD card without rooting?
Many Thanks
At least make a proper effort at posting a subject line in the right sub forum and somebody might make an effort to reply...
Lollipop should fix sd issue i guess. I am running cm12 and have no problems. And theres no way to write to sd without rooting on kitkat or maybe i havent found a way

Kitkat introduced SD Card restrictions that meant apps could only read SD card data without being able to write to them or modify anything. Samsung somehow worked around this with their stock My Files app which allows writing to SD.
Lollipop should fix this by default and open up access to ES again

did not realise the title went missing, my phone is a bit Laggy now and plays up.
Anyway, bit more digging, and I have come across an app called B1 File manager.
anyway, move this to the SD card, and you can write to it's own folder. Then I can assign my media player albums to the sub folder and works a charm!!!!!
And I never tried the stock file manager. I'm still learning what's on here, I've been stuck on jellybean for the past 2 years so there's probably lots on here to figure out.
