Hi,
I bought an AT&T Fire Phone with unlocking code recently on Ebay deals. The unlock code worked perfectly and I am able to use the phone on other GSM networks without any issues
However, I am not from US and so I don't use AT&T services/bloatware etc. After reading some posts online I understand that Amazon also sells the same phone as an unlocked GSM version. So, I want to know if it is possible to flash the Unlocked GSM Version firmware on my AT&T Fire Phone to remove all the AT&T carrier stuff ? If it is possible, can you guide me with the steps?
Also,
1) Will I lose my "Unlocked" status if I flash the Unlocked GSM firmware?
2) Will I get all future OTAs normally if I flash the Unlocked GSM Firmware?
3) Anything else I will lose by changing the default Fire OS Firmware that came with my phone?
My Fire Phone Details -
Memory - 32 GB
Carrier - AT&T (but unlocked with the seller provided code to use it on any GSM provider)
It will be very helpful if someone can help me with these questions
Thank you very much
This info is scattered throughout the forum. They really should post a sticky and keep it updated.
It is safe to go from the AT&T to the Amazon OS. I did it to mine. The hardware is identical, only the software differs slightly. The latest AT&T version is 4.6.4. The latest Amazon version is 4.6.3. Going from one to the other is NOT considered a downgrade. Amazon has two different software paths and did something funky with the version numbers there. They both have the latest stagefright patches. 4.6.3 is currently the preferred version because it works best with Google Play services.
Here are the instructions on how to install 4.6.3:

If you have trouble with the ADB drivers, look on page 2 of that thread.
To answer your questions directly:
Unlocked status should not be affected
You will get future OTA updates through the Amazon software path (no need to worry about future AT&T bloatware)
You lose AT&T bloatware

Hello,
I just purchased a second hand Samsung Galaxy Nexus (GMS) in France carrier locked to SFR. Since the previous owner didn't provide the receipt, it will be virtually impossible to convince the carrier to unlock it for me (even though French and European legislation says otherwise).
If I understand correctly, unlocking the bootloader or rooting the phone will not get me anywhere. How can I carrier-unlock this phone without having to install a custom ROM.
I will gladly accept links to other threads although I have looked and did not find any clear answers.
[EDIT] It occurs to me that since this is a Google vanilla phone I could simply flash it with a stock Android ICS ROM. Is this correct ?
Thanks
You're right that rooting won't help. You'll need a SIM unlock code.
Hello, I would buy the HTC M8 red, possibly in the 32gb version.
I'm having difficulty finding a store that has available.
I also tried swapped, but sellers indicate that send only in the United States, and I live in Italy.
What do you suggest?
Thank you very much and good evening
Make sure you don't get the Verizon (US carrier) variant. Most red M8 versions are Verizon; although apparently a red version was made for the UK as well (but I'm guessing the red UK version is not very common).
Verizon variant has CDMA antenna (not necessary as your carrier is likely GSM) which also complicates usage of custom ROMs, etc.
Also, Verizon variant is block from bootloader unlock via HTCDev.com (may be able to s-off and unlock bootloader with sunshine exploit, but depends on OS software version on the phone). So if the OS version on the phone is up to date, you might not even be able to root, flash custom ROMs, etc.
many thanks for the answer, really very useful, I did not know anything.
All HTC M8 Red are of Verizon?
So even if it was the UK version, may not be a way to unlock the bootloader and flash new rom?
thank you

I found a HTC M8 Red unbranded, of German origin.
I can go quiet, it will have no limitations from you indicated?
I would have full support from communities with different rom etc?
I might as well turn it into Google Play edition?
I am concerned that the 16GB version ...
Thank You

Versions from the UK and Germany will not be the same as Verizon (US only).
So yes, they should support ROMs and other mods intended for the "international" GSM M8. But I would find out the Model ID (MID) to be sure of what you are buying.

That is a question only you can answer for yourself. Its a personal preference whether you want the GPE interface, or Sense.
Once you have the bootloader unlocked, you can just run an GPE based ROM to see if you like it.
You only need to "fully convert" if you want GPE updates OTA, or the GPE partition layout (system partition is smaller, so there is more user storage). But s-off by sunshine ($25 US) is needed to fully convert (in order to change CID and MID).
But also be aware, that fully converting also changes the band compatibility of the phone. So you will want to make sure your local carrier's 3G and 4G bands are supported by the GPE version, before converting. From what I've read, you can flash a Sense radio to a GPE converted phone. So again, it depends on your individual needs, and how you intend to go about things.

Again, it depends on your personal preferences and needs.
I agree that 16 GB is not much internal storage, especially if you like to install lots of apps, or download large files.
The phone has a MicroSD slot, so you can use a removable card to greatly expand your media storage for videos, music, photos, etc. But for things that need to be on internal storage, 16GB can be very constraining. You can also move some apps to the removable SD, but not all apps support it (so its not as good as having more internal storage).

The seller told me with these codes:
Product code: 99HYK256-00
EAN / UPC: 4718487655779
What can you tell me about it?
P.S. I read in your signature, you are using the m8.
The thing reassures me

Hard to tell from those codes, but just Googling the Product Code, it looks like a German GSM variant (and not the US Verizon/Sprint CDMA versions you want to stay away from).
Hi all, I wonder if anyone knowledgeable out there could assist?
I am in the UK and have bought a manufacturer-refurbished unlocked Xperia XA2 phone.
A friend of mine is in rural USA and can only use the Verizon network.
I am aware that Verizon only allow certain phones for use on their network and I discovered that the XA2 was now on their list of officially acceptable phones
So here is my question. I intend to install lineageos on this phone which of course will require unlocking the bootloader.
If I go ahead and put lineage on having unlocked the bootloader, will this phone still work on Verizon? I will be posting the phone to my friend and the last thing I want is for the phone to refuse to play with Verizon once he switches it on.
Can anyone advise of anything I need to be aware of before proceeding, or is my plan good?
Thanks!!

Hi
If you just want to make it usable with Verizon, you don't need to put lineage, you just need to download flashtool and flash US's firmware, in order to make it 99% compatible.
If u want to put lineage, knowing that it isn't an official firmware, be aware that it may work as it may not work. 90% it will work, because lineage is made in order to remove brand limits, but...
Do what you want, but be aware that there are some things that may not work.
Here in Italy even if a phone is brandized (like Vodafone, etc.) you are still able to use it with other operators, and if you want to debrand it, it is just in order to remove operator's apps or animations (e.g. Vodafone boot animation), to get stock Sony ones. I don't know what changes in the US or in the UK.

F.
Hi, thanks for the reply - just for clarity, my enquiry is on a network level - ie, will verizon block a phone simply because it has lineage on it. I am very familiar with modding and how lineage affects the phone so that is not what I need to know.. Since verizon are finicky about which models are usable with their network in the USA, my question is really an extension of that - do they block phones (which work fine with stock) running a non-stock rom (eg based on the fact they detect an unlocked bootloader). Want to put lineage on for all the good reasons to put lineage on - notably bloatware removal etc etc. Is there anyone out there running lineage on verizon in the USA?

I purchased a Samsung S7 on Amazon, and it was listed as a G930V. However, when I received it, I was disappointed to see that in "Device Info"... it lists it as a Samsung G930U.
From what I understand, this is indicates Unlocked Firmware install, which will prevent me from using Verizon's Visual voicemail and also be unable to use the built in Video calling feature, where you can video call anyone in the Verizon Network.
What I don't get, is why the back panel of the phone has a Verizon Logo, even though apparently it is unlocked. I thought all Verizon branded phones, have the G930v firmware?
Anyways, is it possible to flash the phone to G930 firmware, so I can use the features I want to have access to? Or is it recommended I just return this item and try and buy another G930v? Does anyone have any detailed instructions on how to flash to G930v?
Interestingly, when I checked the IMEI online... it lists the device as a Verizon G930V. I guess someone has previously flashed these to U from V?
ETA: Are there any benefits to sticking with Unlocked firmware? Are there any advantages of G930U over G930v? I know the G930v comes with a bunch of bloatware... but wondering if there are other things that VZW's firmware might handicap?

3 weeks late but here are my insights. U firmware has less bloatware than the VZW branded firmware. In general, most people prefer the U firmware over their branded firmware unless, as in your instance, there are certain features only available in branded versions. My guess would be that yours was a VZW that was flashed to U. In all likelihood it shouldn't be too difficult to convert back to VZW, if that's your preference. You'll need to familiarize yourself with Odin flashing and the particulars of matching bootloader numbers for firmware to flash. For an example see link: https://android.stackexchange.com/questions/202491/what-do-the-numbers-and-letters-in-the-samsung-firmware-mean
Hope this helps ...
sm-g975u unlocked att phone wanting to change to tmobile. I have a tmobile sim and had originally plugged this in. The phone works fine but I recently noticed it has no Ota updates occurring. I would like to load tmobile firmware on it to enable some of the tmobile features as well but primary concern is ota updates.

When I try says fully updated when I put it on samsung switch it says fully updated
Can this be done?
What firmware do you suggest?
Csc *#272imei#(may have that wrong) but is recognized and does work not sure when and what to use here, many options.
Also, not sure of the answer here, but if I run an update or csc change (the phone is unlocked) would it require me to unlock it again for any reason?
I am trying to get the phone close to a tmobile if that is possible
Thank you in advance if i need to give more info please let me know.
Download the firmware of your current network and flash you will begin to receive updates. However you can also flash the unbranded one which is G975U1 and you will still receive updates too
Can you give directions on how to get the firmware for the current network and how to flash the phone? I have an SM-G975U that is on SPR that I need to get to ATT so it will get updates from cricket. I have found a lot of materials on the internet and not a single one shows all of the steps clear enough for me to risk blowing up my phone. I have found the SPR files and TMK, and USA, and TMB, but no ATT.
