Hello, welcome to the Xperia M forums. I hope you manage to find what you are looking for here, however the device is a low activity device (namely due to the lack of locked bootloader recovery).
Firstly, please see if your device's bootloader can be unlocked. To do this please follow the steps I am about to post;
1) Open your phone dialer,
2) Type *#*#7378423#*#* (*#*#SERVICE#*#*),
3) Tap Service Info,
4) Tap Configuration,
5) Look to Rooting Status, it will show one of three statuses;
5.1) Rooting status 1; Bootloader unlock allowed: Yes (this means that you can unlock your bootloader).
5.2) Rooting status 2; Bootloader unlock allowed: No (this means that you can't unlock your bootloader).
5.3) Rooting status 3; Bootloader unlocked: Yes (this means that your bootloader is already unlocked).
If you have either status 1 or 3 you are able to install Android 5 onto your device.
Firstly you will have to have an unlocked bootloader, you can do this by following the official instructions by Sony here (skip this if your bootloader is unlocked).
Then use a ROM from the forums what is Android M based.
If you have status 2 however you are unable to install Android 5 onto your device I'm afraid.

Hello all,
So I managed to root my Xperia Ion LT28AT using the "Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v33" Option 0. Option 1 didn't work for me.
Atleast my root status is confirmed. I can install root accessing applications. I just need guidance about flashing a jellybean rom and I have absolutely no idea whether my bootloader is locked/unlocked.
Yes I'm a noob and this is my first attempt at flashing a rom so I didn't want to risk anything. And I did search the forum and didn't understand anything past the rooting since I'm not sure about my bootloader unlock status.
Btw I visited this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1753261 and found out under the Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status (of my phone) that the Bootloader unlock allowed says NO.
Your help is appreciated.
Hi Everybody,
I have a Xperia M C1904 on JB 4.3 [15.4.A.1.9] on Vodafone Australia
My bootloader unlock status is no i was wondering if it is possible to
A) Unlock the bootloader
B) install Custom roms (KitKat Possibly?)
C) get some form of custom recovery whether it be TWRP or CWM etc.
and also i would like to know step by step how to check whether the sim is locked and if possible how to unlock for free (if locked)
i know its alot to ask
Thanks
Andrew
I'll tell you everything I know.
Unlocking the bootloader unlocks the full capacity of the phone. This means you will be able to flash a custom recovery, and within the custom recovery, you can flash ROMs and everything else. But if "Bootloader unlock allowed" says no, then you won't be able to unlock your bootloader, thus not being able to flash a custom recovery. The only way to flash these is to implement a custom recovery for locked bootloaders, which is not yet available for Xperia M.
To determine whether your SIM is locked, the phone won't read it and would request for a SIM Unlock PIN.

Click to collapse
A) we will never be able to unlock the bootloader if it says bootloader unlock Allowed: no.
B) possibly in the near future, if we get a custom recovery working on LB
C) some devs are working on it, but nothing yet. We could be getting it in the near future.
To see if your phone is sim locked, go to the phone app and enter the code *#*#7378423#*#* and a service menu should open up. Click on service info, then sim lock. If you have a 3 beside network then you are sim locked. If you have a 0 then you are sim unlocked.
Hi guys,
First post on this forum, so I apologize in advance if this is not the right section. I have an Xperia E phone and I'm following a guide I found on the net to install Cyanogenmod in it. In order to do it, I followed the official Sony guide to unlock the bootloader, they sent me the unlock code and I used fastboot to enter the code into the phone. After that, the phone got stuck in a bootloop and I had to use a program called Flashtool in order to flash the original ROM into the phone again.
Now, when I enter *#*#7378423#*#* on the phone's dial pad and go to "Service info > Configuration", I can see the following message:
Code:
Rooting status:
Bootloader unlock: Yes
:
The weird thing is every guide I've read on the net about unlocking Xperia devices claim the above message should be "Bootloader unlocked: Yes", so I'm slightly confused (note the difference between "unlock" in the above message and "unlocked"). I guess it is actually unlocked because I was able to use Sony's Flashtool to flash the original ROM, but some clarification on this would be useful since I'm planning to install Cyanogenmod and I wouldn't like to brick the phone by flashing a custom ROM on an unlocked phone.
Thanks in advance for any help!
I finally was able to install CM11 in the phone, so I guess the bootloader was unlocked after all. Now I'm having a couple of issues, but I'll open a new thread for that, since it's a different problem.
Regards.

Dear XDA Community,
I have an Xperia M C1905 and I have checked the service info menu and it shows "Rooting Status: Bootloader unlock allowed:Yes" so I can unlock bootloader but I have heard that unlocking bootloader can cause the phone to bootloop. So I want to know how to unlock the bootloader, root this phone and add a custom recovery. I don't know whether I should take a TA Partition backup or not. I do own an xperia SP which I have but it is broken so the Xperia M C1905 will have to be used for the time being. Can someone from the forum show me the right links for unlocking bootloader, root, custom recovery. A set of instructions to follow since looking at the forum I got no idea which guide to follow for this phone.
Currently this phone requires the bootloader to be unlocked without causing a bootloop to happen.
It is currently running android 4.3 stock - Build Number: 15.4.A.1.9
I'm a noob at this since the last time I unlocked bootloader and added custom rom to the xperia SP was like 4 years ago.
Thread closed on OP's request.
Regards
Vatsal.
