How to wipe a ROM'd Incredible - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Incredible is rooted and I've installed CM7. My daughter used it for a while until I was able to score a Moto E 2015 on the cheap. My daughter took pictures, installed stuff, etc. I'd like to remove all of that but leave the 20 GB of music in place on the SD card.
What's the best way of returning it to a stock CM7 device without deleting off the music?
TIA, CheapDad

I just went through this today and it was a grueling 2 hours of googling, finding broken links, and general frustration.
What I did:
-1. DON'T pull the battery anywhere along the way. Especially not when anything is updating.
0. Charge phone to 90-100% (yeah, 50% is probably fine.. but why risk it)
1. Download this S-On file (big blue oval.. the other download buttons are ads): h t t p:// fs1.d-h.st/download/00006/naO/unrevoked-forever-son.zip
2. Check MD5 if desired, copy to SD card, install in Clockworkmod recovery
3. Download ROM from here (I used: PB31IMG_4.08.605.15_unsigned.zip): h t t p :// shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Incredible
4. Rename to PB31IMG.zip
5. Check MD5 sums if desired (at the very least, if you don't want to MD5 and your internet cuts out during download, start it over)
6. Make sure SD card is formatted FAT32 (if not, copy your files to some other storage, then format FAT32)
7. Copy the zip file to the microSD in the "root" directory (don't put it in any folder on the SD card)
8. Back up your current ROM (using Clockworkmod, Nandroid or whatever)
9. Boot into recovery, wipe data
10. Power off
11. Hold Volume down and power button until you see the HBOOT screen, hit volume up a couple times once the HBOOT screen comes up (maybe there's a more scientific way, but this worked for me).
12. It should show some option about install PB31IMG.zip, say yes
13. It'll loop through a blue bar filling up once or twice (twice for me), might ask you to install or something of the sort again - say yes.
14. It'll load up a red bar - once that's filled it'll be installed and will reboot
15. Wait several minutes, it takes a while to load after finishing the install.
I used some "root checker" app in the android market to verify it was un-rooted (idk how accurate that is?). Also noted that it said S-On on the HBOOT screen.
Hopefully I'm not too late!

Help..cant get anything to flash

Hi I am using hardspl 3.34
I decided to put android on my kaiser as I love it on my desire..
I flashed the latest android kernel from kallt_kaffe, when booted error messages came up about not being able to mount various locations..and a final one "unable to open persistent property directory"
I tried pressing the D pad to load an Android nbh from and boot and nothing.
I have since tried to reflash both winmo and android kernel images from the sd card and through USB but nothing flashes.
If I try with the sd card, naming the image KAISimg.nbh all I get is a white screen with loading on it..nothing more.
when I try via usb it gets as far as trying to flash the rom, then comes up with a communication errror.
anyone any ideas what has happened and how to fix it.
Regards
Robbie
You've downloaded and flashed the kernel (which allows you to run Android), but have you downloaded an Android build yet?
It sounds like you're missing the androidinstall.tar file in the andboot folder of your SD card.
Find a build in this forum, download the build (should be about 80/90mb or so when zipped) and then place the file in /andboot/
If you've already done this, apologies if that was patronising in any way!
The Kaiser is somewhat picky when it comes to SD cards, it may not read KAISIMG.nbh even if everything is fine. My 1GB Kingston card, for example, is useless when it comes to flashing this way, I had to buy a new 4GB card so I could sort out a rather useless Android build.
Thanks NatAvery
I have the andboot folder with the tar file in, but as I get errors from the android kernel i think that is why it doesn't read it.
My main concern is my inability to flash anything..I have tried a different sd card as you suggested and I still have the same problem, it comes up as loading the KAISimg.nbh but goes no further.

Hi Vampires,
Did your issue resolve?.........since even i have a similar issue. I flashed HardSPL first & then flashed a rom from then whenever i switch on the phone it comes to this screen as if loading and is stuck with the error you mentioned ' unable to open persistent property directory'
And this happen to me just like it happen to me .......in the pursuit of having android on the phone.
I'm not able to flash any other rom's just stuck on this screen.
I have the same problem. I also use hardspl 3.34
I flashed the kernel installed the built, bu i didnĀ“t pick the right display setting..
everytime I try to reflash it only says loading.. (left it for about 2 hours)
any ideas?
still looking for a solution, please anyone with usefull info help ..
i had similar problems before, my system is:
HTC tytn ii (kaiser 130)
Hard SPL 3.34, radio 1.70.19.09
DZO's kernel and froyo 15-07 (latest thas it), NAND flashed
4gb SD card
(109mb internal phone memory after 1st boot)
Haret Install (SD card, run side by side with WinMo)
- dload kallt_kaffe froyo, extract and put andboot in SD card, root, not subfolder
- rename default-kaiser.txt into default.txt
- edit default.txt change panel-type into 2 (panel 1 got some issue with res)
- run haret.exe
- don't press d-pad (center) just yet, wait until message 'press d-pad/volume to ..' then immediately press and hold d-pad until you're in install menu.
- select install, ok
- next, select fix permission (optional, but it fix some prob)
- select quit
- let it boot, no need to press d-pad anymore.
- you may get "unable to open persistent property directory", but no worries, restart phone, run haret again, if still the same, reinstall, sometimes twice install should fix it. (don't ask me why)
NAND flash
- dload DZO's kernel and OS build file.
- use Loser's NBH editor to change panel type to 2, and keyboard type. it will then save as KAISIMG.nbh
- put KAISIMG.nbh into SD card, root.
- make folder andboot inside SD card at root, and copy dzo's android build, rename it to androidinstall.tgz (tar/tgz)
- press and hold power btn + camera btn, reset with stylus
- press power again to flash kernel, then reset after complete
- now it will try to boot android, immediately press d-pad when you see 'press d-pad/volume..' and install (sys on NAND, data on NAND), next step same as haret above.
- you're now officially android.
note: additionally you can also try 'sys on NAND' + 'data on SD Card', --> use this EXT2 partitionto partition your sd card
side note:>
zImage = is the haret version of the KAISIMG.nbh file, it's the kernel.
androidinstall.tar/tgz = the android OS files
hope this helps.
Attn: if you're experiencing battery stucked at 15% or something, go into boot menu (d-pad), backup data, flash winmo rom, charge to 100%, then reflash+reinstall android, restore data. that should fix it.

[Q] Black screen with white bars after root? Help would be appreciated

Hey guys here is what i did step by step. This is my first root and i researched this a good bit but i obviously didnt read enough ; ;
Phone info: droid i, slcd, froyo stock 2.2 with november update. i bought the phone a couple of weeks ago.
I followed rooting instructions found here
(couldnt post the url cause im a new user) its found on jonsuh dot com
1) Already preinstalled clockwork mod app
2) Installed Hboot driver.
3) ran new revoked3
4) root was successful and my phone booted up.
heres where its gets tricky.
5) ran clockwork mod.
6) selected back up (figured this would be a safe idea before i started adding roms)
7) it prompted me to install clockwork mod recovery file. i did so then clicked on backup again. my phone turned off rebooted to the HTC incredible screen then went to this black screen with white bars on each side of the phone.
Ideas on what might be the problem would be greatly appreciated.
So i just a battery pull and started my phone back up and it booted up.... epic fail/win
win: phone phone started
fail: i wrote this whole damn post out.
might be helpful for those who ran into the same problem rooting thier phone though.
i read somewhere i should use an older clockwork recovery file. is that correct? and if so, can some tell me one that will work with an SLCD phone?
You might check this out.
ok so i made another boo-boo. i tried to install the virtuous rom and i clicked on clear data and wipe cache and when the phone restarted it stopped at the htc screen which had a black bar across it.
i tried rebooting it a couple different ways but now bastboot is booting up to the htc incredible screen and just staying there... i hope i didnt brick my phone...
please help!
you have an slcd droid incredible and need the modded clockwork recovery from adreynlyne thats all http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788306
thats should take care of the recovery issues
do you know how to move the file to the root of my sd card? i dont have a micro sd card reader...
ok so i went out and bought a micro sd card reader. put the new renamed .zp file onto my sd card. went into hboot and it still says the pb31img.zip file is missing. any ideas?
i extracted the renamed zip file to my sd card. was that the right thing to do? or do i just put the unextracted file in there?
You are thinking too hard!
Plug your phone into your PC. Set it to be a disk drive and copy the file to the SD card. (It will have lots of directories and stuff.)
I am not 100% sure, but I think the file name might need to be in caps. It must be named exactly.
Turn your phone off.
Hold down the down volume button and turn it on.
Magic should happen.
got it working thanks to setexascustoms. had to install it then reinstall virtuous rom. lost all my contacts but im back up and running!

[Q] Unrevoked Loop

I need help and in a bad way.
I tried rooting my phone tonight. I ran the latest version of unrevoked tonight and I can't seem to get off the boot menu that pops up. Everytime I hit Bootloader then Fastboot, I go back to the main menu. Recovery I get an error on the restart, clear storage does nothing, im scared to try simlock. Everything else doesn't do a thing for me. Any help would be amazing.
So your phone won't boot normally at all?
That is correct
The first thing I would try is in recovery make a back up (if it lets you). Then try restoring that recovery. If not I would download a ROM whatever you choose, I have the Redemption Rom 2.2. Put it on the root of your sd card, obviously you are going to have to do this on your PC with a card reader, or if you have another phone that you can put it in it and use the usb cable. Then in recovery go to flash zip from sd card and choose the ROM. This all assuming that everything in the recovery screen works. Hopefully this at least gets your phone booting up. If it does then you're golden and can always go back to stock whenever you choose.
I sounds to me like you can't even get into recovery so that isn't an option.. this is what you do. Download this RUU file. http://dougpiston.com/files/RUU/RUU_Incredible_C_Froyo_VERIZON_WWE_3.26.605.1_Radio_2.15.00.07.28_2k4k_NV_1.70_PRL58006_release_152016_signed.exe
Then open the RUU that you just downloaded. Normally you would run this with your phone booted but since that doesn't work. you need to do ctrl/alt/delete and get to start windows task manager. go to Processes, find and right-click adb.exe and find containing folder. This will bring you to were the "rom.zip" is help, pull that file and put it on your desktop. now, you can close the windows task manager, and the RUU. rename that file on your desktop from either "rom.zip" or "rom" to "PB31IMG.zip" or "PB31IMG" whichever your computer shows, just make sure not to put .zip.zip without knowing.
now, turn off phone, take off back and take out sd card, (hopefully you have an adapter, or another phone you can use? anything to hook it up to the computer since you can't with your phone?, and get that PB file on the SD Card, no folder just right on top and make sure it's formatted to Fat32. put it back in phone, hold vol down and power, let the phone do it's thing, and you're now un-rooted.
Here is the RUU as a PBIMG31.zip already. Just change name to PBIMG31.zip place it in the ROOT(in no subfolders) of your SD card then when HBOOT loads start the update and it should automatically go back to to stock.
PBIMG31.zip download
Thanks bradatz, that worked well

[Q] How to intal MIUI on the Incredible?

After a solid 2 days of searching XDA forums and around the internet in general, I give up on searching around and want to know if there is a straightforward way to install the MIUI ROM that I have already downloaded. I have the ROM already on an SD card, and I figured I am just supposed to restart the phone and some kind of .bat file will automatically start running and itself the rom onto the phone. Well, that didn't happen.
How do I get this ROM installed?
use rom manager. find it in the market place

no? use hboot, and cwm 3.x wipe data/factory reset wipe cache, wipe dalvic,
install from zip.
If that doesnt make sense its time to read more about modding/flashing
additionally rom manager app is trash for flashing, only useful to create nandroid backups.
Some people prefer ROM Manager, I'm not sure what type of MIUI releases are avaiable through there, you might need to purchase premium which is a total pain.
It is overall just better with flash it through hboot and cwm3. Also... andorid/linux do not read .bat files, that's specific to window's OS.
Basically (I'm simplifying this, plus there's 500,000+ other posts saying the same info)
1) Root your phone
2) Install CM3 or if you rooted with unrevoked3 then it automatically installs it.
3) Download ROM of choice
4) Put that ROM on the root of your SD card
5) Boot into hboot (turn off phone, then hold down the 'volume down' and 'power on' your phone.
6) Choose install .zip from location, navigate to SD card and install
7) done

I may be wrong because I have an EVO but between 5 and 6 you need a step that says to choose recovery. On my phone you can't flash roms through hboot.

yesterday I flashed MIUI. I was doing it the traditional way, the way I always do. But when I tried to flash it in recovery, it just started to flash and stopped. I figured I'd do it in rom manager, it had the newest version, I told it to wipe data and cache, and I'm now running MIUI. It's great. Similar to iOS, but very much android. Netflix works, and battery life is ****ing incredible.

+100000000000000 to that, battery life is fuking incredible
battery life is the main reason i'm not going back to CM7. it's almost twice as good, and with the same features, if not better...

Unable to downgrade

I just received my replacement G2 (after two decades of owning a cell phone, I finally joined the ranks of those spilling drinks on them) and am in the process of rooting it. I'm using this guide from the Wiki and everything has been working however I'm stuck at the downgrade process. After I run 'adb reboot bootloader', I press the power button as instructed but absolutely nothing happens.
I've checked and double checked the MD5 as well as that the file is named PC10IMG.zip and not PC10IMG.zip.zip but every time I follow the steps, still nothing happens.
when you boot into bootloader it should automatically search for a couple different files on sd card, do you see the text scrolling?
if so it is either not on the root of sdcard (not in any folders)
or it is not named correctly (windows hides extensions sometimes, but it looks like you know this)
or sd isnt mounting (bad tray or whatever)
or sd isnt partitioned to fat32
only reasons why it wouldnt find it
but either way fastboot is safer so why not just use this method? it should be in the guide you linked
