Hi all,
I have Fat Free Froyo installed with the latest 14th Jan 2011 kernel voguimg-240x320-2.6.32-froyo-14-01-11_14.nbh edited to froyo & panel type 2 from t029000.massey.ac.nz but Google Goggles needs ipv6 support.
Is this a kernel problem or a problem with the build itself? I am experienced in linux, so can modprobe or insmod the ipv6.ko but I don't know where to get it from
Any help would be appreciated!
(message for kernel's developers) take this man! he can dev ipv6!
Jumping the gun there a bit
I triage bugs and work on stuff for Ubuntu. Have also ported a few linux bits to ppc64 (PlayStation 3).
I'm pinching the ipv6.ko from slayhers latest kernel build, hopefully that will work insmod-ding or modprobing it into the kernel thru the terminal on the Kaiser itself.
So, fingers crossed, this may be solved in 5 minutes!!
Didn't work, it must be compiled for a different platform...
Anyone have or know where to get a kernel for the Kaiser with ipv6 support, or failing that the correctly built ipv6.ko for the Kaiser so that it can be insmodded?
Getting it compiled in the kernel is the easy bit, although it does use up a lot of space which is limited in the kaiser's kernel so a little tweaking is needed. Getting it to work with the Kaiser's modem and the builds we currently use is a different matter unfortunately. It will take a bit of modding for it to work but it's more then achievable with a bit of free time. Wish i could buy that stuff!!If i get a chance i will get you the ipv6 module for the kaiser's kernel or a kernel with support for it so you can have a play.
I definitely look forward to it! If I knew how and what to modify I'd do it myself, but I thought arch-specific kernels had to be compiled on the arch itself? If that's the case, I can see how free time would be needed, it'd take hours or days to compile the linux kernel at 400MHz
I have compiled kernels before so if/when I learn how to do it myself, I could start to use my own git repo for more recent daily builds or something.
I'm also thinking about starting working on some *buntu stuff (I know Ubuntu is there for the Kaiser, but soem tweaks would help if I get a chance.)
Hmm, a little Googling goes a long way http://www.androidonhtc.com/wiki/Get_Involved << was hard to find that,so hopefully I can add ipv6 somewhere in the 'make menuconfig' options for the kernel.
Are the standard kernel options used by "make vogue_defconfig" ok to use, i.e. will it build a normal useable kernel so that everything works?

Yes, that is th correct make file to use. I have built the kernel with IPV6 support, haven't tested it but have attached the module to the post for you to try
Brilliant! I'll try it sometime within the next couple of days, although I might myself be working on a blazing fast kernel specifically for the HTC Kaiser, and it is SERIOUSLY!!!! fast, even at 400MHz I can notice a massive increase in speed with the exact same build, but I haven't economised too much.
I can see the the options for ipv6 in the ncurses menuconfig, so I guess it's just a case of enabling it and building the zImage right?
I seem to be having the old problem with the wifi though, and I know it's kernel related, but there are only patches for it, i.e. the wlan.ko, but can't see how to implement it myself so it's an all-in-one solution
When I get the hang of the Kaiser hardware properly, I might just push through a newer kernel from the armlinux site so watch this space

How have you managed that??? What have you done?
I have no idea how it happened, perhaps the other devs add a load of useless options, but all I did was follow the instructions at that link above and compiled a zImage from the 2.6.32 arm branch, using the 2010 arm tools. Used NBHeditor to edit it for Kaiser, panel 2, froyo, flashed it and bang (not literally thank god).
I can't answer any better than that. I used the default options (for now at least) that the vogue build script uses for the kernel, but bluetooth, camera and gps work. No internet connection as yet either through the network or wifi, dumno what I've missed there, and no ipv6 (but can add that easily enough). Wifi doesn't work either, but I'm working on it, although that MAY be the reason why it's so fast...maybe it's missing a few options...still unsure at this point.
I notice that although this is an open community, and people attach NBHs, there are no changelogs or anything showing what the people have done with the kernel to implement some options, so it's kinda holding me back at the minute.

That isn't true, all tested changes are pushed to git, you can see what has been changed and how from here: http://androidhtc.git.sourceforge.n....git;a=shortlog;h=refs/heads/htc-vogue-2.6.32
*facepalm!*
Didn't see that, will bookmark it and keep an eye on it, perhaps work with it. Thanks for the link
the androidhtc.com site is not related directly to the develop project because no developer is connected to it. Also the git repository it not hosted in linux to go but on sourceforge (so download the correct git). That site is very outdated.
wifi works if you use the correct branch (on sourceforge) and modules.
Am I right in thinking that http://androidhtc.git.sourceforge.n...7c0bf5edc4f5c6d64ce4df29254e8332ce26b;hb=HEAD is the prebuilt kernels and nbhs from the source at http://androidhtc.git.sourceforge.n...og;h=62f075ddd13f378fd252be94c77e4f93d12584fb ??
I think I'm looking at the right tree now.
Flashing the latest NBH: VOGUIMG-320-FROYO-01-16-11.NBH still gives me the wifi error. Do I need to manually add the wlan.ko to it or ??
I could've sworn that an NBH I flashed before had all that in the NBH and it worked fine.
Ok, got it back to how I had it:
Flashed latest.NBH from http://androidhtc.git.sourceforge.n...7c0bf5edc4f5c6d64ce4df29254e8332ce26b;hb=HEAD and dropped androidupdate.tgz to the /andboot folder of the SD card, installed update thru the boot menu and done.
So in reality there's nothing stopping me grabbing the same kernel source, building it and adding ipv6 support in the ncurses kernel config menu and making an NBH from it and flashing that over, and then doing the androidupdate.tgz, although I think with HTCFlasherGUI you can flash a zImage directly right??
Is there something wrong with the git at http://androidhtc.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=androidhtc/kernel.git;a=summary I can't get access, it's showing old stuff. It looks closed since git clone rejects me

No, nothing wrong with it. Just do:
git clone git://androidhtc.git.sourceforge.net/androidhtc/kernel.git
You then need to set it to the correct branch using 'git checkout -b <branch you want> '
It's the 2.6.32 branch you are interested in, you can find out exactly what it's called using 'git branch -a' which will list the available branches.
Cool. Knew something went wrong somewhere, had to be me lol!
I added that ipv6.ko to the NAND via a androidupdate.tgz (only way I could do it), and it didn't work, something about incorrect module format (or something like that).
Are there any prebuilt kernels or NBHs for the Kaiser that include ipv6? Either as a module that I can insmod it in the terminal or built-in?
I hate being upstaged by people that can use Goggles without any problems.
I know slayher's kernels have ipv6, but I flashed the new stock one from http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/4434-froyo-kernels-by-slayher/ and it didn't work. I mean the kernel did, but Goggles didn't - couldn't insmod it either - same invalid module format as the ipv6.ko scooter did for me
Also the git clone didn't work:

[ 02/09/2012: Screen Flicker / Brightness is an issue. I'll be looking at it. ]
Hi guys,
In an attempt to help further kernel development for the Kindle Fire, I'd like to share my stock defconfig. It's a bit different than the original otter_android_defconfig that g1011999 came up with.
I was never able to get a usable kernel. So I took some time and built up mine.
https://github.com/KFire-Android/kernel_omap/blob/stock/arch/arm/configs/otter_android_defconfig
This kernel builds using the preferred TI compiler used in all of their walk-thrus: CodeSourcery 2010-q1
Moving forward into CM9/ICS, some changes need to happen to the kernel over time. The migration kernel is found in a branch: "L27.13.1-ICS". The END result of this will be a kernel / source that fully support hw codecs for ICS.
[02/08/2012] FLASH ZIP FOR THOSE RUNNING NIND'S BUILDS: http://bit.ly/xYOf0V
The following ROM is built from the sources at GitHub under the KFire-Android org. Many of those files and configurations are the result of countless hours of development by JackpotClavin. I don't want there to be any confusion as to who put in a ton of time getting this to work.
[02/09/2012] FULL ROM INSTALL: http://bit.ly/ygVvQB
Changelog:
- Screen flicker IS an issue right now. Digging into it
- Touchscreen "Slop" set to 16. This should help touches register on the touchscreen.
- Working Data usage stats (xt_qtaguid / xt_quota2 kernel modules)
- TUN, CIFS support
- USB mounting fixes
Thanks Hashcode, currently building a latest ICS version of it.
A little note for those who also want to compile: arm-eabi-4.4.3 and arm-eabi-4.4.0 did not work for me, they ended the compile without any errormessage in the middle of nowhere, arm-eabi-4.3.1 did the job. Took me some time to figure that out ...

If you want to follow a very good step by step guide for setting this up the same way TI (the CPU maker) intended, then follow this:
http://www.omappedia.com/wiki/PandaBoard_L27.12.1-P2_Release_Notes#Setting_up_build_environment
Obviously, that's for PandaBoard, but the Toolchain source and setup are very good.
It goes into deep sleep for me and turning off the stay awake option in settings, developer options, the screen goes off like its supposed to.

Tonight, I'll go back to both of my in-progress kernels and do some testing to see if they'll boot.
EDIT:
Current issues being looked at with this kernel:
- Power off doesn't really power all the way down. It goes to a black screen, but requires long press to turn off.
- Deep sleep isn't happening. The backlight is on a tad while the screen should be off.
But this config is still MUCH better than trying the original.

Its something to do with netd/dnsproxyd. Just finding a fix that works is a PITA common issue, but then people dont say how they fixed it..

Any chance you're looking into enabling more than 2 touch points in this kernel?

I'm running nind/sitic's cm9-02-04 build with this kernel baked in. I, too, have Stay Awake disabled in Developer Options, and my Kindle is going into deep sleep. I am experiencing the power down issue, though.
It's something I'm absolutely willing to live with for the time being. This is good stuff. Thanks Hashcode!

Right now the difference between this kernel and stock is:
- About 8 ip6 netfilter modules were added
And that's about it.

Are you using the stock ramdisk or the modified ramdisk for cm? I know there must be a difference, as intersectRaven puts out several different variations of his kernel in boot.img form, but I haven't gotten around to diffing them yet

ill look into insectraven's cm kernel thanks!
Edit: That worked! Thanks!
he starts the dnsproxyd differently than what I've seen. But it works!
So I noticed that /mnt/ is mounted read-only which causes issues with apps installing to the sdcard and probably the issue people are having with mounting the sdcard to the computer. Some apps insist on installing to the sdcard (I hate that)
Edit: or do I have this all wrong? Lol I'm no dev remounting it r/w gets the job done.
Is there any websites or anything that you guys would recommend to learn about the Linux kernel and development of it?
Tonight, I went back through and cleaned up my config some more. Removed extra power controls, usb mtp settings and omap mmc host controller (for sd card slot boards).
From my tests, everything deep sleeps correctly and the power off issue is fixed.

---------------------------Known issues-----------------------------
Several camera functions such as HDR don't work.
---------------------------Build from source------------------------
Please consult this guide for setting up CyanogenMod for compile.
Please use
Code:
repo init -u git://github.com/CyanogenMod/android.git -b cm-10.2
when you initialize the CyanogenMod repository so you get the source for CM-10.2.
Download roomservice.xml (see below) and put in ~/android/system/.repo/local_manifests/.
Run 'repo sync' and compile with 'brunch jactiveltexx'. You can get the proprietary files from the ROM.
As always, I take no responsibility in case your phone blows up.
And thanks to the CM team for all their hard work.

This is not something you should install unless you want to be compiling and debugging yourself. It's far from usable as day to day rom. I hope I'm clear on that.
Fixed wifi and a number of small issues. Should be a lot more stable. Seems the main remaining issue is, not surprisingly, the camera. If anyone knows how the entire camera driver setup is supposed to work in android, I'd love some help

Call it just a hunch. But have you tried the camera drivers from the s3 ? I would say that it's basically the same camera and has been added in s4 active because after 1 year it became very cheap to continue manufacturing and this way compensate for the more expensive case and water proofing.

Honestly, not exactly sure how the setup is. I assume it's mostly in some proprietary libs separate from the kernel, but it's hard to find good information on it.

Building from source
Hi,
I'm happy to see such great progress already, and am only diving in to this because I'd like to be able to lend a hand in any way I can.
Is it too soon to be asking questions about how to build for 10.2? I'm having a go at it right now, and if I use Lejay's kernel and device configuration (jactivelte), the kernel fails to compile, something about BUG_ON rcu error, I can come back to that if its relevant. So I tried Epsylon3's suggestion to use tpruvot's kernel and device config. This builds a rom, but black screen, can't see anything or get into adb. If I flash Lejay's kernel over the top of my 10.2 build, it boots. Phone (dialer) keeps force closing in a loop, which is annoying, but asides from that it seems to boot.
Keep up the good work, can't wait to get some 10.2 love.

Comparing the 9295 and 9505 kernels, there's quite a lot of differences. Cyanogenmod tried to merge the two, but apparently gave up. The question is really if we should start with the 9505 and add the camera or start with the 9295 and make it compatible for CM. The stuff i uploaded here is a port of the 9505 kernel, but now I'm looking into starting out with the 9295 kernel instead.
The problem with 10.2 is of course there's no released 9295 kernel for android 4.3. I'm guessing there are not that many differences, so it might not be too hard.
I think I'm getting the same compile error you were with 10.2. Not sure what it means.
Are you going to try to make CM 10.2?

I had a chat with noobnl about it, and he pointed out a patch on gerrit: http://review.cyanogenmod.org/#/c/44552/
I spent hours manually merging it with cm jf kernel, to finally end up with a kernel that gives me. You guessed it, a black screen. After investing about a days worth of effort into it, I ended up with a buggy unstable CM10.2 build, that will boot if I flash LeJay's kernel zip, but its unuseable. It's going to take some serious effort to come up with a functioning CM10.2 kernel for the International S4 Active. In the meantime, a CM10.1 build with a non functioning camera, is still way better than the stock TouchWiz rom, so I'm happy.
Ok, I got bored and had another play around with 10.2 and the CM jf kernel. With the black screen problem, if you power the device down, then boot into recovery (power + vol up), you can adb pull /proc/last_kmsg and it tells an interesting story. It looks like the init scripts are totally borked. init.qcom.rc and init.carrier.rc are completely missing. I tried simply copying them into the root, but it looks like its a bit more complicated than that. The problem is clear that it is unable to mount /system for whatever reason, because it can't find /system/bin/sysinit, then pretty much gives up after that.
This looks like a pretty simple problem for a relatively experienced device maintainer, or rom kernel dev to be able to fix. It would be nice if we could get some more developer attention for this device.

You probably forgot to add jactivelte to the list at the bottom of device/jf-common/Android.mk. I didn't want to fork their repo just to add one word on a line, so you have to do this manually. It's probably also a good idea to extract rom files from a cm.10.2 rom for something like jfltexx.

I have cm10.2 running. The problem is really the camera.
I thought of developing a kernel so that i can use it with my CM11 that im going to port shortly. I thought I'll compile the stock kernel from source itself. I use android pre-built tool chain (arm-eabi-4.6)
I get a lot of compiler errors on stock kernel without any modifications itself...
Do i need to change my tool chain?
Sent from my One V using XDA Free mobile app
I never tried to build the stock kernel, but I think they did it with the android 4.0 toolchain.
To run CM, you need a CM-Kernel. You have to port things from the stock or a custom kernel (like Hellboy by maxwen) to the cm11 kernel.
Try to use rastomanchiks kernel sources (https://github.com/rastomanchik/android_kernel_htc_primou). This kernel is mostly working, stable and has a good battery life now.
I'd also like to build cm11, but my download speed is to slow to download the sources.
Exactly. Even my download speed is slow. And i have a cap also. After 8GB, my download speed drastically decreases. It takes ages to sync the sources...

How different is Cm kernel from stock? I mean what changes should i make?

Cm needs many features which aren't included in the stock kernel and also you should get ION memory allocator working.
Help

I started working on cm12 again yesterday and finally have cm11 sources now, so expect a cm11 build in some days
I can't help you with porting, because all the porting work was done by rastomanchik and I chatted with him. You'd have to ask him about this, but he wasn't online the last weeks and can't speak english without google translator.

Actually I insist on porting myself so that I can learn building properly.
Actually these things are also interesting.. fixing bugs and all...
Have series of exams till May end. I cant build properly until then. I thought why not learn something..
Where did you learn about building and other stuff. Also I want to build the device tree on my own.
If you could specify some sources to learn, that would be grateful!

This is exactly the same point of view I had when I started some months ago
Sadly, there isn't much documentation about own device trees and own kernels out there.
There also is no reference device tree, so every dev does it in his own way. I'm always trying to have a clean, easy device tree and use the CM ones as a reference.
You can find some tutorials about building cm, but only with downloading a ready-to-use device config and kernel.
I just played around with it one or two weeks and learned the most.
If you have enough time, please at least try to get into this stuff, maybe we can get cm12 running.
You can reach me on irc in the channel #hov on freenode.

I have sufficient time only after May. Till then I'll have to do some research and learn the basics.
I saw on the CM wiki page, it says you can run a prebuilt kernel also... So would it work if we could tweak the stock kernel a bit?
And how do I apply patches to the kernel?

Yes you can use a prebuilt kernel, but it will only work if the kernel supports you cm version.
You apply patches to a kernel by changing files or directories in the kernel. For example you can use another fs module (maybe with more functions) by copy and pasting the folder for the module from another kernel. The problem is, the new module may require some functions your kernel does not have so it won't compile.
Hey i had mailed rastomanchik and he said 3.4.x kernel is an impossibility for cm11? Why?

1. It would be much, much, much work.
2. I think there are some device-specific drivers that only work with 3.0
I'm ready to do that work only if i knew how to...

Try to get into it yourself or talk with people who know about kernel developement, I'm also new to android developement.
This release is only tested on the SM-T560NU USA (gtelwifiue).
This kernel is based on vince2678's port of LineageOS, with a couple of updates and optimizations.
This kernel has only been tested with vince's cm14.1 releases.
Flashable zips use a modified version of the AnyKernel2 system. While only tested on cm14.1, it may work on other ROMs, since it does not modify your initrd.
Very special thanks to vince2678.
Without his effort on this device, this release would not be possible.
Updates:
2017-06-10:
First build for CM14.1
Features:
DriveDroid Mass Storage and CD-ROM Support
Built with gcc-linaro-4.8-2015.06-x86_64_arm-eabi toolchain
Additional CPU optimizations
Updated CPU assembly optimizations
Various security patches
XPad (xbox 360 and xbox one) gamepad support
Known issues:
None
How to Install:
1. Download the latest release zip
2. Transfer zip to your device (or skip this step if sideloading)
3. Reboot into TWRP Recovery [Volume Up+Home] (If you need TWRP, first install mine or vince2678's.)
4a. Find the zip in the TWRP install browser, and install it
-OR-
4b. Sideload the zip using adb.
5. Reboot to system and enjoy
How much faster is it with the new optimizations?
Standard Kernel (click for full benchmark):
Noire Kernel (click for full benchmark):
What does "dirty" mean?
Whenever you modify a git repo and do not commit the changes, it will flag the kernel as "dirty".
Rather than forking the git repo, I use a clean copy of vince's repo, then apply my patches over it.
Because this isn't really how git was designed to be used, the build system sees it as "dirty".
It is nothing to worry about, as it is not harmful in any way.
Getting the kernel
Releases can be found on my site. (Check the header on the download page for a link to the source directory for tools to build your own):
https://files.persona.cc/zefie/files/cell/SM-T560NU/kernel/cm14.1
If/when there are more than one release, the most recent release should be on top, but verify the Last Modified date to be sure of the latest release.
Also be aware you will need to reflash anytime you update the main CM14.1 OS, as it will overwrite the kernel.
Bugs and issues
As vince's CM14.1 release is a rolling release, depending on many different sources, unexpected issues may come up in either the upstream code, his code, or my code.
Before submitting any reports to vince, be sure you are using his kernel (reflash the cm zip without flashing mine, preferably with a clean install)
Before submitting any reports to me, be sure the issue is not caused by the current release of CM14.1 (aka doesn't happen when you try the above).
No warranty is implied or provided. Be sure to have backups before flashing. But this is a no-brainer.
bump, because new release and target (was cm13, now cm14.1)
This kernel helped me to finally have USB OTG working by default, great job! :good:

I haven't tested thoroughly but they shouldn't.
The optimizations are some patches that update the arm assembly functions to use features available in our CPUs that were not previously used.
As well as compiling while telling the compiler that we are using a cortex-a53 (in armv7 mode) (by default it just compiled generic armv7 with old armv5/6 assembly).
In short, they aren't overclocks, just using more of the processor's full potential, which is already sitting there doing nothing. Therefore, it shouldn't have a huge impact on battery life.
The CPU patches are here: https://files.persona.cc/zefie/files/cell/SM-T560NU/kernel/common-source/cpu_opts.patch.xz
Fun fact: Our CPU is actually armv8 64-bit, but we can't use it because we depend on Samsung's proprietary binaries, which are compiled in 32-bit (armv7 mode)
Sm-t560 <> smt560nu
Hey,
I'd like to Install this ROM, but obviously i get the message that it's not supported for my Device (in TWRP on flash attempt)
Mine is from the EU so, probably why..
Any chance to get this ROM to work for it?

No.
Unfortunately, Samsung made several hardware changes, including the CPU, when they brought this device to the USA.
You could almost think of the SM-T560NU as the "SM-T560 New".
It is a newer model with revamped hardware, and thus not compatible with ROMs made for the other.
Sorry.

Great info. What optimizations were done on OTG mass storage? On stock LOS 14.1 kernel, USB OTG wasn't working for me while with your kernel it works flawlessly.

Honestly none of my patches do anything USB related, except DriveDroid, but that lets the tablet be a device (by hosting disk images), not anything to do with connecting a device to it. Therefore, I cannot take the credit for that. Vince must have fixed it in his kernel. I built this with the latest code at the time, code that may have been more recent than the last lineage build of his that you tried.

I tried latest build and a few older builds, on every I was stucked in the loop of mounting and unmonting USB device. I only managed to enable USB OTG when I installed StickMount. It seems Drive Droid does the same. Will you continue work on this kernel?

I'll update it if there are any necessary updates for performance or security, or any issues are found, but for now it seems fairly stable and should be alright for a while.

Tnx for detailed answer. Btw, I tested your LOS 13 build and it's very smooth and battery life is great. Only issue I encountered so far is when charging offline, screen doesn't go off and there is no charging percents showed. Also, can you sync with the latest LIneage changes? Can you replace stock browser with the Jelly and stock camera with the Snap camera?

The thread for that is over here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3632745
Also, I am unable to reproduce the issue with the screen not shutting off. There is no percentage, but my screen shuts off while locked when charger is plugged in. Percentage and timeout can probably be configured in settings. I sync with Lineage every update. An update will come sometime this month with July's security patches.
As for replacing stock apps, I'll look into it. As the thread says, this is mostly for my use, hence why it wasn't publicly announced before. If I find the apps useful I will see about integration.
Wondering if this is still supported?

From the title you can tell if this still works. For example will it work with official LineageOS and what not. Hoping to get a response so I can overclock my tablet

Should still work. I haven't messed with the SM-T560NU in a while. If I recall the Lineage build system was creating broken builds, I'm running 14.1-20171121-NIGHTLY-gtelwifiue and Noire Kernel still works with that.
As for newer builds, last time I tried (some time between xmas and new years), all of the more recent Lineage builds would not boot, with or without my kernel. If trying newer Lineage NIGHTLYs, try without my kernel first, then try with if it does boot.
Vince has kinda abandoned the SM-T560NU, although I'm not sure it is a fair reason to abandon us, because we didn't test on a completely different device, but his choice is his alone, and as such, without him working on Lineage, the newer builds are likely to stay broken unless either he comes back to fix it, or someone else takes over (don't look at me).
