So the fire phone supposedly has an NFC chip in there... is it good for anything? Does it work? With Amazon wallet gone, and no lollipop version... it seems we can't really use the NFC for anything?
Would be interested in hearing whether Google Pay works on the stock Fire OS. If anyone gets the update, please post your experiences. Google Pay should be rolling out to Google Wallet users soon.

For the U.S. volunteers: Requirements for Android Pay, at least Play services 8.1.13 (or higher, ofc.)
Root users: If you get "Android Pay cannot be used" ➜ unroot ➜ activate Android Pay ➜ re-root.
Amazon's definition of NFC: No fun! Capiche!? ... I'll see myself out.
Edit: by the way I've been using it since I got the phone around May 15, nothing about "google pay rolling out" or "google wallet update needed", just downloaded it 4 months ago and been using it since..
Wait, what the hell? I don't understand what you guys want? of course the NFC chip works, like every other NFC chip elsewhere, what are you guys trying to do? It works perfect for me on 4.6.1 and 4.6.3.
I use it for google pay here and there, mostly just to brag about it or when I just want break the monotony of pulling my debit card out of my wallet, picture below... and of course it only works on places where they accept tap to pay, else I use my Google wallet card, yet again I feel like Im not a zombie with a BoA card...

Java007 was curious about Android Pay in particular, the chip works ofc. (unless you're using a custom ROM ^^).
pressingonalways is rather new to the forum I think, look at his post history, that will put things into perspective.
I use SlimKat, so no NFC for me, which is ok. We still use old coins and paper bills, like peasants.
How'd you get google pay on your device? Is this stock or custom rom? Did you sideload google app store and then just get google pay? I thought google pay required lollipop or some newer version of android than fire OS's version?
And yes, Bingo, I am certainly very new.. Thanks.

Jose-MXL was using Google Wallet since May, since Android Pay just got released.
Since NFC is not working on CM11 / SlimKat, only Fire OS users will be able to test / use Android Pay.
Android Pay works with all NFC-enabled Android devices running 4.4+. Forcing Android L as minimum OS version wouldn't be smart at this time, just think about the market share 4.4 vs 5.x
Read my previous post about sources and requirements for Android Pay.
True, true, true, Bingo said it all...
Just sideload Google (the 4 apks) and download google wallet or google pay, whatever is available to you, go to a Panera or Walgreens and try it out.

cool... I didn't know Google Wallet worked for all the older phones. I was able to install google wallet with no issue... I can't install google pay because the only version of Play services that will work on my phone is 7.0.99. Can't get to the 8.x version without all the services stop working.

Hi BB,
thanks for your advice. However, it does not work.
"Google is unable to verify that your device or the software running on it is Android compatible"
I am running 4.6.3 stock firmware.
Any other suggestions?
thx
Thanks for confirming that Android Pay works on stock Fire OS Jose-MXL. That might be a factor to consider for those weighing the advantages/disadvantages of installing a custom ROM.

I think you're the first one who tried it and actually reported back ^^.
I don't know if changing entries in the build.prop would be enough to get it working.
Some people (including me) edited the build.prop for testing purposes, but poking the Fire Phone too much won't end well:

I don't know if Safestrap would be of help here, then we could create a flashable ZIP with the default build.prop, hm...
Alright guys here is my stuff:
Google Play Store 5.8.8
Google Play Services 7.8.99
Google Services Framework 4.0.4
Google Account Manager 4.0.3
I got this by installing the older version of the google apks, if I'm correct those came frome here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-phone/general/fire-phone-how-to-install-google-play-t2977237
Let the apks update for a while since they are old, that is what got me a working google pay and wallet, that is all I can do for you guys, I think the problem is you are installing a newer version of the apks and those are a headache...

I think it isn't working for the majority of people because they are on fire OS 4.6.4. I have heard of several reports of users like you being able to get Google Play Services newer than 7.0.99 working on 4.6.3. I wonder what broke in between versions!

We are all talking about Android Pay, right? There is no such thing as Google Pay, that I know of.
Here is the link to get Android Pay, now. Install Google Wallet and set it up, first, before installing Android Pay.
http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/google-inc/android-pay/android-pay-1-0-102576552-android-apk-download/
I'm going to uninstall GApps and reinstall with those mentioned above. If I get it working, I'll try to then update to latest Services so I can get my Google Now alerts working again.
Running the latest Play Store update on 4.6.3. Android Pay displays "Google is unable to verify that your device or the software running on it is Android compatible". I also ran SafetyNet Helper and get "CTS profile match: false".

Maybe I just realized why my NFC pay is working and everyone else isn't, my applications are not updated so I don't have 2 separate apps for Google Wallet and Android Pay, I just have wallet installed and there is where I go to do NFC payments, it's a single app, not 2 separate ones.

Yes. There are three apps. Google Wallet (Old), which combines the money transfer and tap-and-pay options. Now, these features are separated into two apps Google Wallet (New), which has money transfer but no tap-and-pay, and Android Pay, which is now the tap-and-pay.
I can confirm that two days ago, my Google Wallet (Old) worked to pay at a register. But, now Google has completed the roll out of Android Pay and my Google Wallet (Old) tap-to-pay directs me to install Android Pay. Can you confirm your Google Wallet (old) tap-to-pay is working today?

And it says its available in Google play but I can't find the icons and I can't uninstall them so I can install them again
Anyone has this problem .
Updated from ICS 4.0.4 (with Google wallet and play books available )
To jelly bean
I didn't lock the device after installing jelly bean at bootloader screen ,should l lock it
The number of the jelly bean build is JRN84D
I too found the same problem after installing 'takju' and later updating to JB. Use the uninstall option from the play store and u will able to see the icons on your home screen, however on updating them again the icons gets hidden.

No I'm from Saudi Arabia and I noticed the problem after I've the OS so I thought I would find it in the play store
OK I think I found a way.
I went to the play store in the web
Entered with my account and found out that the apps in mention weren't installed so I installed them from the web and found the icons on the device.
But I don't know why it acted the way it did ,the important thing is that icons are visible
Well I tried the apps but it said its not supported in my country

I kinda have a similar problem, the icons just disappeared after getting my google account set up, probably since they're not supported in my country...
Anyways, I shall uninstall them.
Unsupported apps
I experienced the same after upgrading to JB here in Indonesia -- Play Books, Play Movies, and Wallet icons are not visible (annoyingly, when adding every Google account I get prompted if I want to set up Google Wallet -- what for, since there's no way to then launch the app?)
I remember the same happening when upgrading my Nexus One to Gingerbread -- to Google Voice. Thankfully Google hasn't decided to region-lock Google Voice and Google Play Music this time, only the latter.
If I remember correctly, the last time this happened, the fix is to install a *later* version of the affected applications on top of the system app that ships with the system ROM. as that is not available at the moment, I guess we're stuck for now. Does anyone know more?
well I updated to 4.1.1 and still no icons of wallet and play books or movies , so far I'm enjoying jelly bean and as long as I can use google wallet online , that's ok
Hi guys,
I want to share how I tested Ears (Music Search widget) and Wallet on the Nexus phone I recently purchased directly from Google.
I live in Montreal Canada and use Bell Canada as service provider. Today I went to Bestbuy in Plattsburgh and purchased a T-Mobile SIM card with a one month 30$ prepaid unlimited data plan. I'm going next week to United States for a week vacation and I wanted to have unlimited data available on the road.
My phone is stock, not rooted or CWM installed. The idea was to see if Wallet and any other hidden apps will stay functional when I revert back to Bell SIM card. I use a VPN at home so I have access to all US services (Play Music, etc.) Google offers. After initial JB update done on Bell with VPN enabled for Wi-Fi, the Wallet was hidden and even if Music Search was listed into installed apps, it did not showed into widgets list.
Once the guy at Bestbuy activated my SIM card, I rebooted the phone and voila, Wallet and Ears popped as available. I also noticed another hidden app, Play Magazines. There is nothing fancy about it, it links to magazine subscriptions offered in Google Play.
With T-Mobile SIM card on, I configured Wallet and link it to my Google Apps account, everything worked properly:

I also tested the Music Search widget, everything worked properly.
Next, I shut down the phone and switched the SIM card to Bell. When I tried to open Wallet, I was greeted by this message:
However, the Music Search widget continued to work properly while on Bell network:
At least I got Ears working properly, without the rebooting issue others mentioned (the app will lock itself). BTW, no idea why people are referring to "unfreeze/freeze app", there is no such thing in Package Manager commands:
Code:
pm enable PACKAGE_OR_COMPONENT
pm disable PACKAGE_OR_COMPONENT
In conclusion, it sucks to be a Canuck and own a Nexus. Wallet is so awesome and we are prohibited to use it. I was reading on another Canadian mobile site that the usual "mobile" suspects (Bell, Rogers, Telus, etc.) plan create the "Mobile Wallet" app... a poor attempt to emulate Google Wallet in Canada. It will probably have a crazy ugly interface, remember the Visa one that looked like it was coded by a 5 years old kid. Anything they can do to stop users take advantage to a cool product like Google Wallet and get rich by pocketing the fees Google would otherwise.
Man I wish Google wallet was working in Canada would make things so much easier.

Wallet fails to add money using my Canadian credit card that has a US billing address. Another "V" for canucks. :victory:
I'll buy a sandwich at McDonald's with the $10 I have not, just for kicks. Not sure I can afford a combo, heh.
Wish they would enable wallet over here in the UK, but I bet the carriers was to implement some solution of their own as always.
As far as freeze/unfreeze, that's what titanium backup called disabling applications before it could be done natively, seems the names stuck.

Just wanted to share my experience with Google Ears.
I flashed yakju 4.0.2 a way back (it came with yakjuxw). 4.0.4 came via OTA and I manually flashed JB (the 4.1.1 version). The phone is only unlocked and rooted. I'm in Croatia and I've never had an issue with Google Ears. I put the widget on my screen the first day I found it and the app never froze after a reboot. Curious, huh?

Not sure what "natively" is referring to but let me see if I can expand on this comment.
Many apps come installed as part of the phone. These are called system apps. What you install are called user apps. When you go to uninstall apps, you can only remove user apps.
If you root you phone, you can take advantage of an app like Titanium Backup. One of many great function is that you can freeze or even uninstall system apps with it. It is recommended that you freeze the app first before permanently removing it. Freezing an app make is invisible to the phone, even though the files are still there. Unfreezing the app just makes it visible again.
So, you can freeze Wallet and it won't bug you, and then you can unfreeze it next time you go on vacation to USA.
There is not a lot of use for Wallet in the US at the moment, at least not with NFC. As to your $30 unlimited data plan, you realize your 4G is capped, right?

You can use adb to issue the commands OP wrote in the first post: "pm enable /system/app/GoogleEars.apk"
I think that's the syntax.
Maybe some script at boot with a kernel that supports init.d folder I assume.

I used DroidVPN to update Google Music and I deforst the google apps then I installed them again from /system/app/ but I think some of those files will be gone again when I reboot my Galaxy Nexus because once them was on my phone 2 or 3 days but then suddenly them was gone I rebooted my Nexus many times then and I installed the google apps from system/apps so I din't defrost them with any app..

For that price I rather wait for Shamu
The Fire Phone Fire Sale is Here
You can buy a Fire Phone unlocked with a free year of Prime for $200 right now. There is also no limit to the number of free years of Prime that you can redeem. Redemption unfortunately requires you to register the device to the account that you want to receive the free year. I wonder if this will end up being like the HP Touchpad. The hardware is really impressive for such a low price. Get a good Android ROM on there and this would be the best deal around for phone with these specs or similar.

Without the play store it isn't even worth that. Still no bootloader Unlock means this is and always will be DOA.

I jumped on it as well. I used my Chase card and basically got the phone or Prime for free. I'll take that any day since I was going to renew for school anyway. Now it gives me a chance to try the phone workout losing money.
Bought unlocked $199 firephone - got Play store without rooting
I have Amazon Prime, which needed to be extended, so instead I bought the unlocked phone with free same day in the Phoenix area yesterday. got my phone last evening (11/26). After unboxing, I didn't want to root it, so I followed the kindle fire forums to install (sideload) google play.
and Voila I have Google services, Play store, Gmail, youtube, maps, drive and Google now launcher -
Without rooting and without any problems - Just follow the steps on the kindle forum or how-to-install-google-play-on-kindle-fire - on epubor site / gizmag
Guide 1: http://www.epubor.com/how-to-install-google-play-on-kindle-fire.html
Guide 2: http://www.gizmag.com/how-to-install-google-apps-kindle-fire-hd-hdx/30736/
First and foremost - don't upgrade/downgrade the OS (I got the phone with Fire 3.6.8 - which corresponds to Jellybean)
Make sure the Play store version matches the Kernel version for the Jellybean 4.2.2 - remaining services can be latest I think
Temporarily Disable 2 factor authentication on Google login via browser (where Google asks you your phone etc)
Steps:
1) Enable Non Amazon app installation from Settings -> Applications
2) Install ES2 file explorer or any file viewer from Amazon App store (you can also install some batch APK installer apps)
3) Copy the Apks from the link above (see my attachment)
------ Google Service Framework
------ Google Login Service
------ Google Play Service
------ Google Play Store
(Skip Vending .apk as it has been superseded by play store)
4) Reboot after each apk above - allow Fire OS to acknowledge google login if prompted
5) You should see Google Play properly logged in to your google account - install gmail, youtube, drive, google search etc.
(Optional) If you hate the Amazon Carousel, Install Google Now launcher) - See last screenshot. There is another forum post where you can upgrade the carousel icons on sideloaded apps so that they appear large.
Once you have Googlify or Androidify the Fire phone, it actually runs pretty nice.
Fire Phone shortcuts:
Android Back button -> Swipe anywhere from bottom edge of visible screen
Android Home Button -> Single press main button
Android Task Switch -> Double press main button (I miss the close all apps shortcut here)
Voice Search -> long press main button (I wish this could be made to Google Voice search in 1 step)
Device Search -> Swipe down and use the search icon there
Android Menu -> Swipe from Left edge (in supported apps)
I ran Antutu benchmark and the phone performs pretty decently - compares to 1st gen Moto X, Nexus 5, HTC one M7, Galaxy S4.
For $199 unlocked this is unbeatable for a decent android phone - with 1 year prime.
Attached: ANTUTU benchmark shows this phone better than Galaxy S4 but not as good as S5/HTC
I have AT&T so I will be getting my free upgrade next spring, which I can sell unopened for 600$ keeping this fire phone.
Took me 30 minutes to get Google Play no need of rooting

See my post in the subsection - You only need to sideload google play store, google login framework and match the version of the Fireos to the android kernel version and download the matching play store - 4 apks and one setting change to get Play store. Pretty slick for $199 IMHO.
Yeah but you have an black background...
Framework working well?

Works fine for me. I'm using all the google apps. The Google now launcher was kinda wonky so I'm sticking with the fire OS launcher with the Google apps installed.

Obviously that's exactly what they did (how very prescient of you).
That said, with such a severely locked down OS (can't even get Google Maps), I don't think it's worth the price. Maybe if someone figures out how to root it and install Cyanogenmod it'd be a good deal. My Kindle Fire was basically useless until I got a proper Android OS on it. Now it's a very decent tablet.

Yeah, framework is fine, all apps work except for the labels on Google maps (somehow the hardware rendering on the firephone is incapabale of aggregating the labels of streetnames and city names in google maps)
I am debugging that now ... I have black background if I use Google now launcher that is another issue which I dont care about.
So far the phone seems fine - it is running the early Jelly bean (4.2.2 version kernel) which isnt bad but not great. I will try to get custom bootloader next - didnt have time on long weekend as I was on call for work - AMZN
Followed the steps, and now i have google play store working on Fire phone. Thanks so much.
Now waiting for root, & custom rom.

I hope you achieve some progress. Bootloader is currently the main thing stopping Fire Phone custom roms and such. Its locked down tight, and we either need to find an exploit for it, or somehow replace it entirely, but that sounds just as difficult to do as exploiting it.
How to change the Launcher
Hi,
This works great.
Can you please explain me how to change the default launcher?
Thanks

Download Google Now (or any other launcher) - Complete installation from app store - Then Press the home button (bottom main button) - you should see complete action using - popup with Fire and new launcher as 2 options.
Then choose new launcher and choose always option. To undo the new launcher - uninstall the custom launcher and the homebutton will automatically revert to default fire launcher
i like many other bought this on sale day under the assumption that i would be able to get google play store and services on.
this however doesnt look the case as we are on 3.6.6
does this look like we are doomed forever without it
any help to myself and others would be most grateful
thanks in advance

Yes, we are stuck. I installed 3.5 AT&T but doesn´t work either. The only thing I could get is Swiftkey
I've been able to successfully install Google play services, account manager and the services framework previously. Managed to get apps such as YouTube, gmail and others to run without crashing. Problem is, I used specific versions and I can't remember which ones they were ? I'm trying to find out what I did right and then I can document it so I won't forget again lol. Bare with me.
Google play store is a no go on 3.6.6 though. Use 1mobile or something instead.

Thanks, but... It didn't work. I tried that this morning and it didn't allow me to install even 1 of the apks
Thanks anyway
does this require root to the device
thanks for any replies , forgot to add this
thanks
The method that lu1gj3s posted above would require rooting, as that's the same method for all Kindle Fire tablets. As for the Fire Phone I assume it's the guaranteed to way to make it work
Has anyone tried Baidu root or something similar? I think I'll give it a try tomorrow and then go through the method of putting Google Play on again

no haven't messed on that much with it yet as I am waiting for a couple of nano sims to arrive for the 2 that I bought. im not that bothered about the play store itself but more about maybe gmail, google chrome and you tube. As I have a nexus 4 now I am pretty used to google being a part of everything i use plus it works well with my chromebook

thanks for info
will try and have a good go when house is quiet and no kids about lol
No root needed to make it work. I got it running without root on 3.6.6 except for the play store.

Install account manager > services framework > play services > reboot > update play services > install youtube/gmail etc
Must say its disappointing.
The main selling point for me is, its dirt cheap and we can run android apps off it
I will be trying to root this little bad boy, anybody had much luck?

Well as you've had people say that the downgrade to 3.5 from 3.6.6 works I guess I'll give it a try
But no harm in trying Baidu Root first
Can you update to 3.6.8? In that version there's no problem with Google Apps
ya same here 3.6.6 no google play
ya im in Ireland got phone for 99pound need google play badly need to update to 3.6.8
If anyone hasn't yet figured out that play store won't work on any version of 3.6.6 haven't even tried to solve the problem by looking it up.
I've got it all working but every now and then get play services have stopped coming up on my phone (if anyone knows how to get rid of that let us know, thanks). I've used blackmart but most of all I use aptoide for all my apps. What I have noticed as well any apps that confirm purchases with play store load up.
I have to say, the fire phone with Google services and gapps is 1 of the best phones out. I think it's great and while they've hacked the price, I'd hope more devs would invest more time in to roms and other goodies. £99 you'd have to be stupid not to get 1.

+1 here..
"google services framework has stopped"
the process "com.google.process.gapps" has stopped
Have tried numerous guides to get this to work on 3.6.6 and none of them work for me, and yes i've looked it up
If not how about being helpful and providing a link or copy and pasting the guide that works?, GoogleFu isnt working out for me.
All the youtube guides and plagiarised articles i can find all reference the same method that doesn't work out.
Alternatively they recommend moving them to system apps which you cant do unless you're rooted and that would mean a downgrade to 3.5
I get the error "Google Play services has stopped"
Software Version 4.6.6.1
I can't update any apps in google play store.
all the google apps continue to crash..
did Amazon just pull the kill switch on all Fire phones?

I don't know if you are having the same problem, but some Firephone users that complained about the Google-Play-Services APP errors, have apparently solved this problem, just installing others versions of the 4 APPs needed to install the Google-Play-Store on the Firephone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/fir...oogle-play-t2977237/post69690639#post69690639
They has said that you need to install the following APPs in this particular order:
- Google Services Framework, 4.4.4-1227136
- Google Play Services, 10.0.84 (036-13749526)
- Google Account Manager, 4.4.4-1227136
- Google Play Store, 7.2.13.J-all [0] [PR] 138561921
https://goo.gl/W4NbMy
https://goo.gl/r3sUsg
https://goo.gl/XmnzRB
https://goo.gl/GjymJx
I am currently using the above 4 APPs (latest versions), on my Two Firephones with FireOS 4.6.6.1, and on both of them the Google Play Store is working flawlessly, and I never have seen the "Google Play services has stopped" Error.
I really hope this will help you to solve your problem!
thank you, that did it.
I uninstalled the above 4 packages
reinstalled from the links.
logged back into my google account, and now good to go.
weird why the old apks stopped working after a very long time of being installed. wish they would of updated themselves.
I was having the same issues as described by others. I uninstalled the ones (all 4) I had, and I reinstalled the specific ones linked here in the instructed order -- so far, so good. Apps that quit working (refused to open, crashed...etc) are all back up and running!! So appreciate your knowledge & willingness to help!!! Thank you!!!!

AlCalavicci, Glad to hear that after re installing the 4 APPs, all is working flawlessly again!
As you already said, it is weird why the old apks don't auto update and stopped working, after a very long time of being installed, but I think that the problem is that this 4 APPs not updated themselves, because the Firephone is runing an Modified and very old Android Version.
For this reason, I and many Firephone owners, always check and download/install directly the latest versions of these 4 APPs from www.apkmirror.com, because most of the Google APPs, such as Youtube always require to have installed the latest Version of the Google Play services APP.
Although Amazon discontinued the Firephone, I still hope that they finally releases the FireOS5 that all their Amazon Fire Tablets (2015-2016) already have, and that it looks and also it is working very Smooth without lagging!
I am very happy to know that I have helped a little to solve your problem.

Thank you Thank you Thank you! Don't know how you figured out the sequence and fixes, but it seems to have solved my problems too. I'm not giving up on my Fire Phone but there's not a lot of help out there. Every few months a new version of play services comes along that fails and there's no stopping it from updating no matter what anybody says. Hopefully this fix will last a long time.
Is it always a matter of finding the correct version of these apks?
