can an unlocked phone just swap sims from another carrier? - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Actually this is a two part question.
1. I called sprint to see if i can get my phone unlocked so that I could test it on another carrier. At first they refused, then they said ok and gave me the MSL # for the phone. Is that all that is needed if i wanted to go to t-mobile or some other carrier and switch the phone to them? Can I unlock the phone myself if i have the MSL #?
2. if the phone were unlocked, and I had a sim card from another carrier, could i just swap sim cards and use the phone on the other carrier? Or does the phone have to be activated with the carrier first? I've got a friend with a note 4 from t-mobile and i was hoping i could just pop his sim card into my phone to test my phone out on t-mobiles network. I don't really want to sign up for service unless i know for sure the service is better.
Thanks

What i know of the MSL code dosen't unlock phones, sprint lies. It just opens up a hidden menu. There's a forum on here that shows how to domestic unlock the Note 4. To answer your second question, yes if it's unlocked you can just put the sim card in and if you did the unlocking right it should get the signal from T-mobile.

wow so is sprint support completely incompetent or liars? They told me the MSL code was all that was needed to unlock the phone. and that i would NOT be able to just swap out the sim card to test it - i'd have to actually sign up for service with the other carrier and register/activate my phone under that plan

[Q] Rooting vs Unlocking ?

This is the first android phone I have, so I hope I am not asking stupid question.
I purchased a tmobile S3 seperately with a not qualified data plan. (the old 2G plan).
Whenever I access the internet , tombile will ask me to change plan instead of the page.
I am now thinking to unlock.
1. Is Rooting = unlocking the phone?
2. What is the best and safe way to Root the phone?
Rooting gives the user access to system files. Unlocking allows your device to function with other SIM cards.

You only need to unlock if you plan on using a different carrirer. Youll need to purchase an unlock code

If you bought your phone thru T-Mobile you can call T-Mobile and ask them for the unlocking code. I simply told T-Mobile I was traveling to Europe and wanted to put a European sim card in my phone and use it over there which was true. Within 24 hours I was sent the unlocking code. I can now put just about any sim card into my phone and I am all set. I can also put AT&T's sim card in my phone and get their HSPA+ network without any problems. No rooting needed, just unlock the phone, put the AT&T sim card in and the T-Mobile SGS3 is on the AT&T Network. The T-Mobile version of the SGS3 IMO is the most versatile version of the SGS3, you can get it with 32GB of int memory, 2GB of ram and use it on all Networks, The T-Mobile SGS3 is the only version of the SGS3 that can do all these things.
Rooting is basically the same thing as "jailbreaking*". It removes the restriction to having all files acessable on the phone. Nothing more nothing less.
And unlocking is when you want to use a simcard from a different carrier on your phone.

If you call T-Mobile and ask them for the unlock code, they'll email you the unlock code so you can unlock the phone. I've done it before with my MyTouch4G and am going to call them to unlock my SGS3, as I travel to Canada and use Rogers SIM cards.

[Q] Unlocking a brand new phone never activated?

I just bought a brand new Galaxy Note 3 from a T-MOBILE store to use it with AT&T. The phone has never been activated before and I was wondering can I just insert my AT&T sim card and unlock it with the code that I have? or does the phone have to be activated first with a T-MOBILE sim card before I can unlock it to AT&T?
The region lock is kind of confusing me...

From what I heard it needs to be activated first. BUT, I think it needs to be activated if you plan on using it outside this region (country). I'd say give it a shot and see. If not... if it's not rooted, just take it back lol (j/k).
But I think the region lock stuff applies to international users, or those that want to use it internationally. Region lock I think is used to prevent people from selling these devices outside the country without it first being activated within the country... If I'm wrong, someone may clarify...

There is NO region lock if you purchased the phone
from a tmobile store, they region unlock all their
phones which need it before they sell you the phone.
Only the international NOTE 3 phone models have the
region lock intact and must be activated in the country
of origin with a valid sim card from that region or country.
If you purchased the phone at a Tmobile store then you have
nothing to be worried about, it's already activated and all it needs
is a valid active Tmobile sim card installed.
The Tmobile Note 3 does not come unlocked but Tmobile will
email you a unlock code with instructions if you request it. (free)
The Tmobile phone will not work with an AT&T sim card
unless you request an unlock code from Tmobile & unlock it.
(or using your valid unlock code if you have one)
The phone must have a valid tmobile sim card installed in order
to unlock it successfully.
After it's unlocked you can remove the tmobile sim card and
replace it with an AT&T or any other active sim card.
You must wait at least 14 days to request an unlock code
because that's how long you have to return the phone for
a full refund.
It's easy to unlock, takes less than 30 seconds.
Once unlocked it will work in any country or region.
Good luck!
So there's no region lock on 900T from t-mobile?
How did you buy a phone without an account??

Got it from ebay...could be a dud!
tmobile is not just handing out the unlock code even if u did purchase it at full price. i just called them today myself. you have to have an account that has had atleast $100 put through it. i told them i dont have an account i purchased out right and should be able to get the code. they said it was the only way otherwise i could pay samsung or a third party company. finally im like wait my girlfriend has had a prepay acount for like 6 months. thats way over the 100 that they want so they transfered me to the prepay department and i explained to them what was going on. i confirmed the account information with them gave them my imei and they said that i will have an email with in 24hrs with the code. so now im just waiting for the email.
Great! and good luck!
If that backfires you can go to 3rd party such as Fastgsm.com or many others just look at the reviews 1st..

If anyone else tries this...
The phone must be activated on the t-mobile network for 40 days ($100 minimum) and be paid in full in order to get the unlock code.
I can't remember where I read that, but I also confirmed with a rep because I am considering leaving to a pre-paid service.
If not, you would have to use one of the other ways of unlocking the phone.

So that still stands as correct then. As you just piggy backed on your girlfriends account that has been active for well over 40 days, thus approving your unlock code.
I am only speaking as if you do not have an account. If you buy the phone straight up, in order to give the unlock code they want an account (note I didn't say the device itself, which in my earlier post did say. Oops.) that had been active for 40 days and at least 1 month payment. Otherwise everyone would just buy their phones from them and they would make little profit.
There are always ways around getting a code. As some people mentioned you can always tell them you are going to be over seas and need a code. I have even found that being nice enough, and getting the right person, you sometimes get lucky.

How to enter Unlocking code, I don't see the message for that

I have my note 4 Sprint USA phone near me and I wondering where to enter unlocking code, if I have this code from Sprint (MSL code).
When I inserting other carrier sim-card it says Invalid sim card (no window for entering this code) and if I insert Sprint show just no network (cause I'm not in the US now). Can you tell me where to enter unlocking code?
Thanks

The windows that asks for the unlock code is only for GSM based phones and that MSL code dosen't unlock phones. It just opens up a hidden menu that can damage your phone if you don't know what you're doing. There's a post on here that shows how to sim unlock the Note 4 for gsm use.
Edit: If you're international. Download "Galaxy Tools" by idone and it lets you unlock the phone for international use

Sprint Note 4 Domestic SIM Unlock
Sprint Note 4. I'm now on T-Mobile with Note 8. Want Note 4 available as backup on T-Mobile. Entered the MSL OK but with T-Mobile SIM in, under APNs, "Unable to view the APN settings. Access is restricted for the current user profile."
I put the de-activated Sprint SIM back in. When I get to editing "APN type", it's grayed out for both APNs. How do I unlock for domestic SIMs; it's already unlocked for international SIMs? Thanks

SIM unlock screen not showing on Sprint Samsung Note 4

I have two Sprint Samsung Note 4 phones and switching the carrier from Sprint to Metro PCS. I received the unlock codes from Sprint earlier today, after being on the phone for about an hour,
However, Metro PCS sales reps/techs were unable to complete the unlock process, since SIM unlock screen did not show and they have never worked on Samsung Note 4 before.
Metro PCS reps tried multiples times with metro pcs SIM card, and without SIM card to unlock the both sprint Note 4 phones , but none of the below procedures worked, unlock screen never appeared to insert the code.
Method #1 Insert a Non accepted SIM card in your phone and power on. Once finished loading your phone will ask you to enter a code, enter the Unlock Code, unlock screen did not show.
Method #2 Go to the dial screen on your phone as if you are going to make a call and press: #7465625*638*UNLOCKCODE# (8 digit unlock code) unlock screen did not show.
Method #3 Go to the dial screen on your phone as if you are going to make a call and press: #0111*UNLOCKCODE# (8 digit unlock code) unlock screen did not show.
Method #4 Go to the dial screen on your phone as if you are going to make a call and press #7465625*638*# Once prompted for code, enter the 8 digit Unlock Code. unlock screen did not show.
Is there another way to enter the code to unlock the note 4 simlock?
We would like to get both Note 4s unlocked and switch to Metro PCS ASAP.
Thanks in advance !!

I just found out Sprint Samsung Note 4 is Domestic SIM Unlockable and I was given the MSL (Master Subsidy Lock) code , instead of Domestic SIM Unlock (DSU) from the sprint agent.
Also, CDMA device (Sprint is CDMA) can only be used on another CDMA carrier. In the U.S., Sprint, Verizon and U.S. Cellular use CDMA. AT&T and T-Mobile Metro PCS) use GSM.

This phone works on both cdma and gsm. It has both radios in it. Only thing is Sprint blocks some of the lte bands, so depending on your carrier you won't get lte. Pic below of lte bands.
I use this phone with Cricket(AT&T). I don't know if this phone unlocks with a number. I think there's just code that needs changed in the efs partition and settings in hidden menu. I'm not sure as i just paid Idone unlock app to unlock mine.
If you can't figure it out for free and decide to go the paid app route, I highly suggest idone apps.

I have this phone, apparently sprint says they have "unlocked" it, for domestic use as well (no longer under contract, new device, etc.) but of course there is no UNLOCK screen when I put in a t-mobile or mintsim card only says INVALID SIM. What else does one need to do?
Reset the phone completely?
I was given some code, is that the MSL code?
Shouldn't this somehow be easier?

i've tried this , the phone goes to something called SCRTN and then reboots, but everything is still there and it says " are you currently talking with an agent" So, that doesn't really seem to erase everything at all? does the idophoneapp unlock for DUN and does it open up LTE bands, or is that still a problem too?

If your speaking about using it for gsm service, then NO! The LTE bands is a whole other issue. You'll only get 4g hspa+. There have been many to try getting lte to work including myself, but no luck.
What you mean by dun? I've heard it mentioned, never knew what it stood for. Hot spot tethering i think you mean by that.
Yes it unlocks mobile hotspot. But if you install a custom Rom after, it'll also have to have it in it.
I understand your frustration. I've seen similar post of Sprint customers being locked out. I was never with Sprint, when i bought phone, i just got it unlocked!
Same problem:/

Sprint Note 4 weird when I put in a AT&T SIM Card. Help!

OK, so this weekend I decided to try my AT&T SIM Card with my Note 4 from Sprint. I thought it would ask me for a SIM unlock code or something but it recognized the card and showed "3G". However, I got the card icon which said "Invalid SIM Card".
Any idea why I did not get the prompt to input unlock code? Thanks!

The sim inside the sprint note 4 is only to access the LTE network. So since you took the sprint sim out, you would be only receiving 3g. That is why you are receiving the invalid sim card error, because its not using it.

So I am getting that error because the SIM card is not using LTE? I don't get it. If the phone is unlocked, shouldn't it ask for an unlock code?

There's been plenty of discussion in this forum about bringing SM-N910P to other networks. I'm no expert, haven't done it myself but what I read repeatedly posted is that radios in this version did not allow LTE on domestic carriers when unlocked. Seems a common issue with phones made for CDMA carriers; taking them to another carrier may not meet your expectations. If the limitations are acceptable, maybe you consider going ahead and weigh your options.
Again, there's plenty of threads in this forum discussing this but here's one that I found that may help. To me, it's been rare for @idone to post these days but he posted here.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I am aware that the Sprint Note 4 would give me 3G or H+ but not LTE which is fine by me. I was wondering why the phone did not ask me for the Unlock code to begin with when I threw a GSM card in there.

Did you find your answer? Or still asking?
It's likely Sprint will give you a MSL number but not unlock the phone to use on domestic carriers. I think you still need to unlock it for that purpose. But the developer I referred you to can do this with or without the MSL. His tools are capable; his service is a full unlock for domestic. I don't think you need the unlock for carriers outside the U.S. the way the phone is currently. Sprint may clear a phone for domestic carrier use but not unlock it or help you activate it. You'll likely find no carrier to help you unlock it either.
I'm sure there are ways to do it yourself but it's gotten more complex with Lollipop and Marshmallow. I'm just not sure how it's done because I haven't fully done it. Only walked through it partially back in KitKat but kept Sprint SIM and service. Didn't try another SIM card.

No I'm still looking for an answer. I have messaged idone on their website and sent a PM. I need this unlocked and take it to H2O. Sprint gave me the MSL code to be given to a GSM carrier but I call BS on that. Strange thing is the damn phone recognizes the AT&T SIM card as a 3G card all right but still says "Invalid SIM Card".

No expert here, but dont you need an AT&T SIM card that has your phone unique ID info programmed into it so it registers on AT&Ts network?
I thought the MSL would just unlock an area in the phone where you would change DNS type info to AT&T's towers/network.
