I've seen and answered this question quite a few times so I thought I'd just write down the procedure once so everyone can find it.
So you want the latest OTA and want it rooted but you have no idea how to get there? I can help.
Prior to yesterday I was running rooted stock with TWRP recovery. The OTA failed of course.
In order to install it and root I did the following.
1) install rooted stock image via odin (found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426) This re-nstalled stock recovery.
2) install and run voodoo ota root keeper from the play store to preserve root.
3) took OTA download and let it install
4) ran voodoo OTA rootkeeper to restore root again
5) Install goo manager from play store
6) install twrp via goo manager
7) made a rooted stock nandroid backup.
The above procedure didn't wipe any of my data or settings because I came from rooted stock to begin with. I just used odin to restore the recovery and missing bloatware..

I didn't use ADB. I used twrp for my recovery, but you can install rom manager and cwm recovery with it instead of goo manager and twrp.
I lost my root when i did the update...
can you give step by step on how to root again after the update and install the google universal search?

If you've disabled or uninstalled stock at&t and Sammy apps (like Flipboard, clocks, etc.) the update will fail. You need to enable/reinstall stock apps.
Hi, I used Voodoo Root Keeper to regain root. However, in my device status it is now saying modified instead of normal. How can I fix that?
You can't. Don't worry about it.

It looked like reflashing the rooted stock rom did reinstall the bloat I removed.

Yes, it does work. Get a custom recovery back (CWM) and flash the file I attached in my earlier post. Saves the time from flashing a stock rooted ROM and going from there as a starting point.

I have the Lg g pad running 4.2.2 and today i received an update (OTA) . Anyone knows what oa this update and second i am root and i cant install it because after reboot for installation i am going to custom recovery. Any way to sideload this update with out going back to full stock unroot?
Edit: i tried to reboot several times the devixe bit getting always to TWRP . I tried to restore full img but the same also i wiped data . I keep gettong to custom recovery trying to install the ota. Any ideas?

If you have custom recovery and root the ota update obviously wont work. I had asked the developer of root for our devices for the otas and this is what he had said:

Yeah there is a script that runs when you do a OTA. My buddy had to completely restore to stock using download mode to fix his. You may get lucky with doing a factory wipe but sounds like flashing a new rom didn't even help... Look through the forums and find the thread that guides you through doing a regular restore (this will restore you to the original software. You will be unrooted and your recovery will go back to stock. This means you can do the OTA if you so desire. Just keep in mind it may block Loki and root)

Yeah i will do like that , but surely there is a way somewhere to remove the boot loop , from TWRP you can remove edit files.
So if someone with more knowledge tell us where the OTA files give the command to boot to recovery we can remove it.

I unbricked the device with FlashTool.1.0.54 , i flashed the original firmware , the strange thing this did not wipe my data, only removed Custom recovery and root.

the software version is v50010b from v50010a
Perhaps the update is by region. I cannot seem to initiate update via OTA or LG PC Suite.

To be honest I didn't mention any chances , sure they (lg) updated their apps but I haven't notice any system chances , but then again I can't take it from my kids and wife hands!!!!
Just tried the update to a stock (but rooted) Gpad
At 3% installing, error 0x13E
After booting, a samsung-like:laugh: message:
"This device is suspected in rooting. Software update is not available for rooted device"
Fortunately this tablet is not mine... This tablet needs a "google edition" update ASAP
Maybe somebody could cook this update into a package that can be flashed by people who are on stock, but rooted?

Hey, everyone. It's been a long time since I've rooted my phone. I ended up hard bricking it and getting a new one. (I tried using ROM Manager to update my Clockwork Mod and it downloaded and installed, and when it said it needed to restart the device, I accepted, and that was the last time I was able to use the phone).
Anyway, I got it replaced and I haven't rooted it. It's been about 8 months or so and I've decided I want to root my phone again. However, after doing a little research, I saw that rooting is now different when the device is running 4.4.2. I want to be able to run CyanogenMod and flash nightlies and whatnot. Is it safe for me to root my phone and flash CyanogenMod? If so, could someone direct me step by step to doing it? It's been so long and I don't want to brick another phone.
tl;dr -> havent rooted a phone in almost a year, kinda forgot how. SPH-L710 running 4.4.2. is it safe? how do i do it? i want cyanogenmod

you wont brick it by rooting but here is 3 methods
1. first and mostly recommended flash Philz recovery for the D2Lte in Odin just make sure your on the latest one then root your stock rom with the option under Philz settings called Re-root(SuperSU)
2. you can use any recovery and flash the SuperSU zip from Chain fire
3. you can just use TowelRoot for the actual rooting process then download SuperSU and BusyBox from the PlayStore
method 2 implies that you already have a recovery installed
method 3 will give you root but no recovery

Towelroot is super easy to use, its a one click method.
You can find a full guide for the S3 here
Pretty simple to do though,
Download the TowelRoot apps from http://towelroot.com.
Enable Unknown sources on your phones, normally this option located on Settings > Security.
Install the downloaded app (tr.apk).
Now run the app, just tap the “make it ra1n” button to start rooting.
Let the app perform the root job, wait for about 15 seconds and your phone will restart automatically.
As soon as the phone is turned on, update SuperSU to v1.99r4 or newer.

In my case, TowelRoot didn't work due to Samsung Knox secure boot locks the recovery rom. You can't either go to recovery mode at all or read your phone internal storage/external SD storage from TWRP. I flashed CF-Auto-Root-d2spr-d2spr-sphl710.tar.md5 and it would get SuperSU installed to your phone. The SuperSu stopped working when disabling Knox.
Alternatively, I tried to downgrade to the 4.04 or 4.1.2 stock rom by Odin, but failed. So far, I don't have any way to root my phone and install CM11. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

You unlock bootloader. Flash a custom recovery... I suggest twrp. It will ask you when you exit if you want to root. Say yes.
Boot into android, install supersu if it or superuser aren't there already. (from play store)
Or just flash recovery . Install a rom , likely rooted already.

I had already TWRP in my phone so I download your files. Opened the recovery and I did from there (install). When it finished rebooted the device and after that when i did a root check it said root access not properly install or sometihing

Open the SuperSU app, and it will prompt you to install the binaries. Select yes, of course.

If it asks to update with a "normal" and "twrp/cwm" option... Try normal first. The other option if that doesn't work.

I tried the normal it didnt work, how I do the second, I pressed it but nothing happened!
I don't think you have twrp installed anymore, or not properly. You've flashed it with fastboot, since updating to lollipop? How did you update to lollipop?
Normal, I never had root before. Upgraded my phone to 5.0 and then i tried to root it
Rooted fine here with normal method. Just had to update super su.
OK, can you please walk us through exactly what steps to Root you took. From the beginning. And we'll see what happened.

They must have taken the option out. It didn't boot any faster for me anyways. Not since 4.4.2

SO GUYS, ITS ME THAT I CREATED THIS THREAD! PROBLEM SOLVED. I ALREADY HAD TWRP AND DOWNLOADED THE Update-supersu file from the above youtube video (links) and I did it with recovery mode. I DONT KNOW BUT THE PREVIOUS supersu I installed couldnt update the su binary. This one did it. PROBLEM SOLVED AND I ROOTED MY 5.0.1 LOLIPOP DEVICE.

Guys, I got the notification to update my ZE551ML to WW_2.20.40.59_20150807_7712_user_rel. Problem is, I already rooted and uninstalled many bloatware. Fortunately though, I've backed up all the bloatware before I uninstalled them with Titanium Backup. Will I be able to update my phone if I were to restore all of the original apps? And do I need to remove root/and or Xposed completely or do I just turn off root via SuperSU? Thanks in advance.
PS: I've tried updating the update directly prior to WW_2.20.40.59_20150807_7712_user_rel and it failed. I didn't restore any bloatware last time though. And I have NOTHING to do with any boot loader because I don't understand any of it. Please give me step by step to successfully update my phone (preferably without OTA).

Good idea to check MD5 sum if you can, unless you like to live life on the edge or just can't wait that extra minute or so (like me)....

Better idea, TWRP backup before doing anything.
Easiest way?
Apply pre rooted image, you will not loose your setting or need unfreeze or reinstall bloatwear, just will need reinstal busybox and Xposed framework and update superSU. This is the fast way, Xposed will also wipe cache so phone will run smothie.

Yeah, but it takes so long.... And not everyone had the forethought to unlock their bootloader. Though I suppose you could still do it with the untethered TWRP too...
