I see a ton of skins/themes on the market for aHome and Open Home. Whats the benefit of installing themes via recovery mode vs using a 3rd party Home app to install skins/themes?

As far as ease and stability's sake, hardly none.
Some advantages of the themes via recovery mode are these (someone correct me if I'm wrong on some):
-A theme in aHome or Open Home can't do as many changes systemwide as a normal one can (for example changing icons in the music player app or changing the layout of the unlock screen) since it only has permission to change its own stuff and the notification bar.
-Themes from xda are more plentiful since not all of them are snagged and brought to the market.
-Anything new that comes out in theming is going to be available here first, and (no offense to the devs at betterandrod, etc. They do a great job) it just will take a while longer for those sorts of changes to be able to propagate into the replacement home apps.
Bottom line: It's far safer to install themes from the market, but here is where the developers can meet and share ideas, and it's bound to throw you some patchy themes, and maybe even a bricked phone or two. It's all a matter of preference.
Well themes from here give you a much more rich experience in my opinion. While skins save you time and are easier to use, i still prefer a theme from xda. I like the little details that really make the g1 shine. There really is no danger of bricking phone, none that i know of anyways. If you know what your doing then there are no worries.
ih why do just 1 ?
Not sure about the others, but with dxTop you could keep your root theme as far as notification bar and app bar went and use the icons wallpaper or optionally app bar from one of the market themes
I was using glossy min for a while with deep blacks icons and it all seems to go well.
The only thing a skin changes is the clock, application launcher, and icons.
A theme is a full theme, including full customization vs just a few little parts.

Information:
This is a HomeScreen Theme, it doesn't have any other apps customized. I will in the future make fully skinned themes with custom frameworks. This is just my first try, better ones to come.
Performance:
It uses many 3rd Party Addon Apps and Widgets. Some people pay argue it may eat up the system memory but I have been using this setup since a week and its suitable for daily use. There are occasional lags if the Media Scan is going on. And it takes another minute after boot for the apps to start up. Then you may have to use Advanced Task Killer (ATK) to kill some apps on startup. That is all thats need to smooth the tab out after boot. Takes a few minutes. I have TweetDeck, Kik, Facebook, eBuddy, Dolphin Browser and MusicPlayer Pro open at all times and I dont see any lag. So you guys should be fine
What you need:
Archos 101
Launcher Pro Plus*
MultiPicture Live Wallpaper (in Market)
Cowon D3 Clock (in Market)
Minimalistic Text (in Market)
Pure Messenger (in Market)
Extended Controls (in Market)
Music PlayerPro (in Market)
Simi Folders (in Market)
Desktop Visualizer (in Market)
*About the launcher: You need LP+ as it allows you to overlap and resize widgets... ADW EX allows this but doesn't play well with MultiPicture Live Wallpaper.
Pre Preparation:
Make sure you have all the apps listed above and download the zip file with the files in it and put it in the internal root directory.
App Settings:
Below are the fundamental settings I have set in all the Apps, please have the things listed below as they are set.
LauncherPro Plus-
General Settings>Hidden Apps>Hide all the stuff later on.
General Settings>Enable Scrollable Widgets> Tick
HomeScreen Settings>Number of Screens>5
HomeScreen Settings>Default Screen>3
HomeScreen Settings>Transition Effect> None
HomeScreen Settings>Number if Columns>10
HomeScreen Settings>Number of Rows>9
Dock Settings>Number of Docks>1
Enable Loop Scrolling> No
Behavior Settings>Enable Auto Rotation> No
Behavior Settings>Home Key Action>Show/Hide Status Bar
Behavior Settings>Home Key Default Screen> Yes
Appearance Settings>Dock background> None
Appearance Settings>Dock background> Show Screen indicator> No
Appearance Settings>Dock background> Hide Notification Bar > Yes
Appearance Settings>Dock background> Home Button App Drawer > No
Appearance Settings>Dock background>Hide Icon labels > No
Appearance Settings>Dock background> Disable Wallpaper Scrolling > No
Appearance Settings>Dock background> Highlight > Outline
Advanced Settings> Play around with it. Do NOT enable 3D as it doesnt support landscape. Be careful in here tho.
LP Widgets > None
MultiPicture Live Wallpaper-
Common Settings>Picture Source> No need to set this now.
Common Settings>Background Color> Black
Common Settings>Crop/Resize> Show Entire Picture
Common Settings>Decrease Saturation>100%
Common Settings>Decrease opacity> 100%
Drawing Settings> transition Type> NONE
Drawing Settings> No Reflection
Thats it for MultiPicture Live Wallpaper for now.
Minimalistic Text-
Just add a dummy widget anywhere for now and go to Global Settings. Set your settings there and set the fonts folder to /sdcard/fonts (or /fonts) depending where your internal root is. Press save and home. If you see the widget, remove it.
Basic HomeScreen Customization:
We will be doing everything in Landscape View

First get rid of the Launcher Dock on the Right. Here's what to do:
Hold the top most icon and set Swipe Gesture action as Show/Hide Status Bar.
Then on the same icon long press and Change > Icon > Blank
Do the same with all the 4 icons below but on the third one, set it to Open Notifications as a Swipe Gesture. And on the 5th or the lower most icon, set the Gesture as Open App Drawer Now that we are done with that, you should have your Status Bar hidden and no dock icons. Just the screen and the soft buttons.
Now set the open up the MultiPicture Live Wallpaper and add screens to it.
Please download the zipped folder in this thread and extract it in the internal root as it is. If you haven't done so yet.

This should be pretty straight forward.
Screen 1 = System
Screen 2 = Social
Screen 3 = Home
Screen 4 = Games
Screen 5 = Media
Just choose Single Picture and use Root Explorer to navigate to the folder and use the wallpaper.
Code:
We are just getting started, we'll go one screen at a time now. We are 30% done as of now :)
Screen 1, System:
Start adding 9 Extended Controls Widgets. Make sure you set it to white icons and no labels or drop shadow. Now align them as in the DeviantArt ScreenShot.
After you do that, add 3x1 minimalistic Text Widgets, hide their backgrounds and select Custom Layout > Remove all the current blocks and add Static Text. Now click that and write out he label, set style as Accented, and override size to 18. Now go to Accented Text Style Settings and choose the Font to Telegrafico (it should appear if you've added the font folder properly.)
Keep doing so until you have it all layout. You may have to resize a few widgets, you do that but holding the widgets and leaving them. Launcher Pro will show a rectangle with an arrow on the lower right. Exit resize mode by press the back soft button.
Screen 2, Social:
This screen is pretty easy. Open up Pure Messenger from Widget Selection, select the 4x4 scrollable widget, setup your accounts> customize and use the White Transparent theme. Now play around with it and resize and fit it within the wallpaper.
Now select Desktop Visualizer 3x1 and select the icon from the folder and start setting them on the right. Pretty self explanatory.
Screen 3, Home:
This screen is hard. May take time to perfect as theres a lotta overlapping going on and setting up the widgets may take time...
First open the Cowon Clock from widgets and set the colors to green and white and move it to the top left as in the screen shot. You may have to resize to get to the exact position.
We are using Desktop Visualizer 3x1 for the browser and chat icon. I have included a calendar icon too if you wish to use it.
Now the minimalistic text is set as below:
Set the static text to Non Accented and and the Battery to Accented. Set the size of the font to 20. Then go to text styles and change the font family for both accented and non accented to Telegrafico. Go back to the Accented Settings and change the color to Hex>66cc00
Do the same for the other snippets down there. Once they are on the screen. Start by placing the "Hope you are having a Good Evening" thing to the bottom. Resize it to set it to a place. Then the weather above it and resize it so it overlaps the widget below but is near it. Do the same with the battery text.
I know this may be tricky but you should be able to nail it within 5 tries.
Screen 4, Games:
This screen is made up of 4 4x2 Desktop Visualizer Widgets Resized to look good.
Once you have the emulators loaded up with icons in the folder.
The Android Icon is a Simi Folder Widget/Icon.
Here are the settings for my Simi Folder on the Games Screen.
Go to the App Drawer>Simi Folder
Add Folder
FolderName> Games
Widget Settings>Icon> Select the Android Icon
Widget layout> the 4th Icon in the left column.
Back
Launcher Settings> Hide everything under it.
Icon Size to 50
Width to 50
Launcher Style to Custom
And then just press OK on the top.
Once youve done this go back to the Games HomeScreen and add a SimiFolder Widget and select the folder we just created. Again, resize so it fits in between the emulators.
Now we add Static Text via Minimalistic Text. As we did before, 3x1, Accented, Add the Fonts, and the Size for the text is 25.
Screen 5, Media:
This screen uses the MusicPlayer Pro Widget on the left and a Minimalistic text Widget. The Text widget is reszed to just touch the widget so it looks like in the screen shot.
Before we proceed we may have to go back to Simi Folder and Create the remaining Folders that we use here.
Follow the same steps as for making the Games folder. (Steps above.)
Now I have stretched the the listen down one row. Then just put the watch icon below it and the again stretched the photos down one row. If you keep doing so, you'll achieve it as in the screenshot. (btw the Simi Folder Widget size is 3x1)
Wrap Up:
As you see, it will take sometime setting the Minimalistic Text Widgets. You may wonder why not embed that text in the wallpaper too. But doing that would blur it out like the dock. I am working on the Wallpaper issue and will update if I get a solution.
Credits:
The Wallpapers were made by me except the HomeScreen.
The HomeScreen Wallpaper was used from SocWall.com, so I dont have the link to the Author.
The Media Icons are by [email protected], and I have just added the text next to them.
The font used is Telegrafico by [email protected]

I just installed Go Launcher Ex. Is it possible to have the normal moto dock with Go Launcher?
The normal moto dock has the blue and red buttons for dialer and contacts. I'm not very fond of the Go Launcher dock which has transparent buttons...
Help please?
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
Im not sure about getting the Motoblur buttons but there are plenty of themes available for GoLauncherEX. Just check out the GoStore and get another theme.
You can also simply long press on the dock icon and chose replace/Custom Icon to change the icon from the transparent ones to one of your choice, or pick default icon to choose the Apps default icon.
The more themes you have, the more icons you can pick from.
hope that helps
Stick with GoLauncher, its got so many good things
Check this out.
Thanks for your reply pprakash.
It doesn't create the desired effect . There's no option for transparent icons on GoLauncher...
Is there any way to replace the GoLauncher dock with the original Motorola dock? (3simple buttons for call, app drawer & contacts)??
The second attachement is the Transparent icons. You can replace the DOCK background with the first attachement in the post and the individual icons with the Transparent one. You need to set two places for same action. For Ex. Left two positions should be dialer and right two positions to be Contacts.
@Prakash: Dude you're a genius! Thanks to you it worked perfectly!! Now I have the same old Motorola dock with GoLauncher installed. This is awesome!
One more question: Is it possible to remove the "Home" button/icon that appears at the bottom of the app drawer? It takes up an entire row of space which could have been utilized to show more app icons. As it is I can use the capacitive button to go back to the homescreen anyway.

@gamefrk ... I am not genius. Just sharing back what I learnt here .. Regarding the Home Button .. Not yet. It can't be disabled anyway as of now. Probably you can contact GO team for that ... they may release it in future I think. The workaround I use is Vertical scrolling. This makes Home button to be un-noticed
Even I use vertical scrolling, the home button doesnt go unnoticed for me...

As you may noticed, Huawei's EMUI is adding rounding borders to icons. This can be very annoying so there is a simple trick to have icons without borders.
But first - I am not responsible for any damage made by doing this.
What will this do?
Remove rounded borders and icon background from applications icons
Replace system app icons to material design icons
[Coming soon][Now available]Replace out-of-date looking app icons (google apps etc.) - Most of them were replaced, if you see any out-of-date icons, please write it in comments
NEW: Some users, especially Ankit Aryal, TKGerrald and shahi.persian (I am sorry if I forgot about anyone), suggested me to make theme that only changes 3rd party apps. So, I am presenting Third Party Apps edition known as 3PAE. Installation is the same as "NEW installation (3.0+)". Download HERE
Knows issues
Some apps like Google apps, Viber etc. will still have borders, but not rounded - Most of them were fixed, if you see any bordered icons, please write it in comments
Lockscreen wallpaper can't be changed, it is always the same as the homescreen wallpaper
Tested on Huawei MediaPad M2 8.0
NEW installation (3.0+) (if something goes wrong, use the original installation below):
Download Pure.HWT file from download section (unpack if you downloaded .7z file, if you have .hwt file, do not unpack)
Put the file into your device to HWThemes folder
Open Themes app on your device
Choose a stock theme that will be used as a base (for example, I like the theme called Brightness) and apply it
Open Themes app again
Tap Customise
Tap lock style, tap more and choose PureIconsV3.0 and Apply
Tap Unlock animation and apply any theme you like
Tap Lock screen and apply your lockscreen wallpaper
Tap Home screen and apply your homescreen wallpaper
The most important step: Tap Icons then more and choose PureIconsV3.0 and apply
Done
Original installation (1.0+):
Download Pure.HWT file from download section (unpack if you downloaded .7z file, if you have .hwt file, do not unpack)
Put the file into your device to HWThemes folder
Open Themes app on your device
Find theme called Pure and tap it
Tap a checkbox
Done

WOW awesome !!!!!
Thank you for this awesome "theme", this really rescues the ugly look of the Huawei icons in connection with Nova Launcher.
Would you mind telling me why some of the icons (e.g. Google Drive, Dropbox, Google Calendar, Play Store) still have a (square, sharp) white background while others (e.g. Spotify, Whatsapp, Google Clock and others) don't have one? How do I disable the ugly white background in an EMUI theme?
Thanks for sharing.

Greetings!
So... The reason of that is because some "clever" people in Huawei decided it will be better if they replace the icons of the most popular apps. So even if you generaly disable backgrounds theese apps will still have borders and will be looking out of date. And the reason of that some apps doesn't have borders is because I replaced the icon manually but for some reason I can't replace the play store icon. So if you give me a list of ugly looking apps, I can replace them in the next update.

Really clever of them, thanks for clarification.
Icons that still have a white border and might be of general interest: Dropbox, Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Street View (comes with Google Maps). Interestingly, though, some apps that are 100% not included in your list and have an irregular shape with transparency (e.g. Automate, DiscoMark Benchmark) don't have such a border. This behaviour seems quite strange.
I anyways use Nova Launcher, so no need to include my listed apps, I just thought I might mention them for your information.
Cheers mate
PS: Do you need to replace all the single icons in order to not show a border? Or can you replace some kind of theme-wide "border file" with an empty file to not show a border?

Hello!
I will include the icon.s ASAP. The reason because the apps like automate don't have a border is because Huawei didn't change the icon, just added borders so in this case it is easier to remove the borders generally. For regular apps I simply remove the file that add borders. But in apps like Google apps and other popular apps I have to do it manually, icon by icon
Some other apps with ugly white boxes, in 2.2 version: Waze, Messenger (Facebook), Play Store.
Anyway, great job, thanks!
First of all, thanks so much for the theme. Those ugly borders I have been loathing since the moment I got my P8 Lite (ALE-L04, now on 5.1). Got linked from an Android Central article today.
For icons still with white border, apart from the others already mentioned, I have: Google Photos, Play Games, Voice Search.
There seems to be a bug with the theme on my phone. The lockscreen wallpaper cannot be set independently from the homescreen wallpaper. From what I can tell, the theme has "styles" for Homescreen and the Lockscreen. Seems like the lockscreen portion may not be well defined enough and the system treats them as the same. The wallpaper settings allow me to change the lockscreen wallpaper with "Other", but once selected, it does not do anything.
Let me know if you need screenshots.
Keep up the good work!

I have found a workaround. Since the icons are one of the components of a theme, and the EMUI allows customizing each of the components (screen lock style, unlock animation, lockscreen, homescreen, icons, and font), we can use the stock themes and just switch the Icons to your theme. However, I could not do that because Themes -> Customize does not see your theme as a selectable Icons theme. I hacked the zip file around and looked at another theme that I downloaded (the Android N theme). Turns out I just need a preview_icons_1.png file under the preview folder for the theme to be selectable for just the icon. I created a 1x1 png just for that. Tried to put a nicer png but it does not render the picture. This worked without needing to reskin the lockscreen and fiddle with layout XML files and such.
One thing I do miss though, is that the incomplete theming seems to unhide additional functionality of the lockscreen. The default on mine is a swipe to unlock with a camera icon on the lower right (swiping that will go directly to Camera app). With yours set as the whole theme, I got a 4-way unlock slider thing (like stock Android?) and it was cool. I do want the individual wallpapers more than that "feature".
Repeating the specs of my device: P8 Lite (ALE-L04), Android 5.1 with EMUI 3.1
Version with "normal" System App Icons?
Hi!
First of all: awesome work! Was looking for that for ages. But is there a possibility that you can Upload a Version with less fancy music, telephone and Messaging Icon? And is it possible to switch the background colors of the Widgets to the style which is "Singularity" Theme is using? (Official Emui 4.0 p8 Theme)
If you could do such thing, that would be so awesome!!
Like I would even pay for that theme.

Hi, icons you mentioned except Google Photos should have been changed in 3.0 version. Also the wallpaper issue was solved (thanks to flyfox99). Thanks!

Thank you so much for this! When you use original installation for V3.0 you will still have the lockscreen functions but if you use new installation, you can change the background independently.

Hi! Thanks for you feedback! Messaging and Telephone icons should be changed by now. Music (I think you mean ringtone) can be changed in future, if you sent me a music that you want to have there, that would be great. I don't know much about changing widget background but if you sent me the Singularity theme, I could try it.
Awesome work!
Thanks for this great work! I was shocked when I saw the ugly iOS 'adapted' Icons on my new Mediapad and spend some hours to find out how to change this.
I want to let you know that also the Hangouts Icon still have the ugly backround.
Sincerely
Tina

The original Singularity theme seems to be a stock one on the P8. Someone repacked it. Music may mean the music player app? On mine the icon just looks like Google Play Music. The widget thing may need deeper skinning of the respective app to set background colours, etc.?

On my P8 Lite the Hangouts icon was already fixed even in v2.2. Attached is a screenshot for v3.0.
@MrAdny: also confirming that Play Games has been fixed. :good:

Unfortunately even after changing the screen lock style to V3.0 the 4-way unlock thing still did not re-surface. I think it was a fluke/bug that made it show up in the first place. To properly enable that may need to fully re-implement the lockscreen layout. Oh well, no big loss for me; or I learned to live with same wallpapers.
Google fit has a square white background
And Huawei magnifier is black you can't see the icon on black background.
Other than that it's a great thee thank you!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA-Developers mobile app
If you upgraded to Android Oreo 8.0 I am sure you noticed the new icon shape and the annoying background.
I read that on other phones (Samsung and Pixel) there is an option to turn the background off but I couldn't find it anywhere in the settings...
Anyone knows how to do it?
Also i look a way to turn to old icons
you can change icons in themes....its easy !! htc theme have more than many milion icons themes or background....
but not change all sistem icon...
The icons look decent to me ( facebook needs some work ), the Settings menu structure and visuals and the changes in the battery menu ( previously Power ) annoy me a little bit.
"I read that on other phones (Samsung and Pixel) there is an option to turn the background off" >>>>>>This is the adaptive icon feature of Android 8.0, not something "turn off the background" but each app must have all kinds of app icons (round, rounded square, square, etc.) in the APK, so that the launcher could pull the needed icon out and show. That's how adaptive icon feature works.
However, the case you described here, is just a set of icon pack made by HTC as default. What you need is just another set of icon pack which you can download for free in HTC Theme app.
HTC needs to stop making their home launcher so rigid. let us change things we would like to on a Nexus or Pixel
install lawnchair it has the option to choose whatever background it's free and it is the best launcher I used hands down

So, here's the solution: install the icon pack here released by HTC today: https://themes.htc.com/actions/them...5d60d?by=09abf6dd-1d5a-4cc9-b11c-d474867eec70
@Alpert3 Thanks, that helped partially...
For some reason, only some of the Google icons are still with the round grey shadow.
For example: Drive, Chrome, Photos, Gmail, Calendar, Play Store, Fit...
Can you add a screenshot?
I assume it's the the default round icon of Google apps.

Yep, confirmed, it's the adaptive icon from Google.

What link not showing up in XDA labs
@6th_Hokage ??
I made a customized theme, using all rounded icons, I tried to keep all icons as close to stock style as possible. You can download here: https://themes.htc.com/actions/them...a3?token=dbf74135-da27-4d8a-99d7-0e9b1a5eb425
For some reasons it was refused by HTC to publish, not sure why.
If you like my theme with all other stuffs, then keep it; if not, you can choose another theme you like then add choose the icons from my theme.
I can't download any theme from HTC Themes... it shows me an error after 5-10 min it said Impossible to download XX theme. I've cleared data of Sense, reinstall Personalize apk, i've also delete my HTC account sync and reenter my account... I don't know what do to... can someone help me??? Thx
