M8 not recognizing SD card? - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a SDHC 32 GB SD card that I'm trying to get to work on my (Verizon) M8...
It's formatted with FAT32, but for some reason it's not recognized by TWRP or any ROM it seems (Tried GPE, Sense, and CM based). However when entering the bootloader, it tries to scan the SD card for images, so I believe it's being recognized on a lower level, just not at the recovery / ROM level...
Any ideas?

What version of TWRP (or other custom recovery) do you have? I wonder if it could be related to that.
Also when you enter the bootloader with the SD in, does it start scanning the SD for img files?

Any ideas anyone?

[Q][HELP] Can't go to recovery, SD card removed + Qualcomm cdma Technologies MSM

Pheww,
I will try to explain what happened, but basically I am not able to boot in recovery, I mean I can boot in bootloader but if I select recovery and got the red triangle image if I connect via the usb amd try recovery-windows.bat from PC nothing happens and the computer says Qualcomm cdma Technologies MSM drivers are missing.
Also, I successfully loaded RUU rom and installed it from fastboot (copying as PB99IMG.zip file on the SD card) and that is the only thing I can run now on my phone.
I was hoping, once I load RUU that I will be able to repeat routing procedure etc, but now it reports Removed SD Card. I have reformatted card, checked another 2 cards, as well as mine card in another phone (Wildfire). My SD card works in another phone, but none of the cards works in Desire.
If I connect phone via USB computer does not recognizes it, it still searches for Qualcomm cdma Technologies MSM drivers, HTC Sync doesn't see it as well.
And yet another symptom is that: if the phone is off and usb plugged it turns on immediately and stuck in bootloop.
So what is your goal?
[Sig] dId you know? If you Insert a Coin on your Desire, then it levels up to HD, Z or S :[/Sig] !!!! 10 post limit for off topic NOW!!!!
My goal?
Final one is to enable my phone to boot in recovery and to restrore nandorid backup I have.
But firstly I need to enable SD card, or to resolve Qualcomm cdma Technologies MSM issue....

OK I'd like someone else to check my thinking, but wouldn't it work to:
insert wiped SD (FAT32 format)
flash the recovery (same version you made your nandroid in)
Wipe all / factory reset
Restore nandroid
If you are s-off you can flash recovery via fastboot - if s-on it's via rom manager, clear guide for both here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719
But the problem is that it won't recognize any SD in it. It reports SD Card Removed, although SD card is inserted

Hmm sorry missed that in your original post.
Now, I'm unsure...
As much as I noted it is able to recognize SD while in fastboot mode since it installed RUU ROM copied on sd card as PB99IMG.zip file, but when the OS is loaded, it not recognizes SD card at all

On the other hand... maybe this is a USB brick?

It is indeed most probably USB brick, I have almost all its symptoms... I'll study the thread you linked to see if I can resolve anything. Thanks!

SD card not recognized by ROMs?

Strange problem with this desire, I can access the SD card from recovery with stuff like USB-MS and flashing from SD but with stock it says the SD card isn't recognized (the options in Settings are all grayed out). With a rom that has Apps2SD like InsertCoin where some of the main apps are installed to the card it just leaves me with a blank screen on boot with the background/top bar still there.
Pretty strange desire really, when I first looked at it the problem I mentioned above was happening (it was originally on InsertCoin, worked for around 4 months before this started) so I reflashed it to stock and then had it returned to me with the owner saying that their SD was broken.
If anyone knows how to fix this it would be much appreciated as I'm as stuck as a brick wall right now :/
Explain your problem in no more than 2 sentences that actually make sense and I may be able to help you out.
Add on information such as
ROM you are/were using
Can you boot
Does PC recognise phone
Hboot (S-ON/ S-OFF)
Have you tried with another SD ? Maybe it is the SD thats broken ?

Sorry, let me dumb it down a bit:
In Amon Ra recovery it sees the SD card fine and lets me use it over USB fine too but when I boot up into a ROM it doesn't seem to find it.
Using InsertCoin/stock ROM and neither recognize it, it boots up fine and the PC can see the phone too, but since it can't mount the SD card I can't use disk drive mode :/ It's using S-OFF hboot too.

The SD is fine, it works in recovery and in my own desire but I've tried another SD card to be sure and still nothing
hmm ok try to reformat the SD card using recovery and tell me if it works
I've had/got a similar problem. I believe it's a problem with the contacts between the sd card and the 'holder' for the sd card.
Try removing the back of your phone, removing the sd card, pushing down on the metal 'holder', replacing the sd card, and rebooting.
This works for me for anything between 1 minute and a couple of days before the problem starts again.
I have no idea why the card is still accessible in recovery. If the above had no effect then please ignore!
The only solution, and it's really not useful, is to remove the sd card. I've returned my phone for repair and nothing got replaced (my guess is because the sd card is still accessible on recovery)
EDIT: No longer convinced it's the contacts as whenever my phone 'freezes' if I reboot into recovery the sd card is always accessible.
Now think it's to do with the file system/structure on the sd card becoming corrupt.
If I format the sd card as one single fat32 and keep ALL apps on the phone then I have no problems.

SD card unmounting

My 16GB SD card was randomly unmounting in my phone (Desire HD) I assumed it was a bad card as my PC would not detect it in a card reader. I got a new 16GB card today and it has started randomly unmounting in the phone, I get a warning message and the sd card vanishes.
This does not happen when i use an old 2GB card, the previous 16GB was running in the phone for at least 6 months.

I did I was originally on AOSP when I switched to Jellybean this started happening but the first thing I did was go back to AOSP. And it make s no difference, it is fine with a 2GB card but keeps losing my now 2nd 16GB card.

You sure the battery cover is on correctly. If not check the SD Card holder.
Last resort is to go fully stock and see what happens.
If the above fails, its a hardware issue

Thanks - going back to fully stock was my next plan at the weekend. Is there any form of pre-rooted stock ROM I can use, will going back to stock HTC ruin my bootloader and S-OFF and such things ?

Have you tried formatting the SD with the phone and not the computer? Also look for the rooted stock rom for your phone is your best bet, its out there in pd98 zip form. Good luck

I had a mounting issue after going from the stock 8GB card to a new 32GB one, all it needed was formatting and job done.. If you can format it in the phone do it, if not, put it in a card reader on the PC, it should open find it.

Thanks for replying but as i originally posted, I have had a 16GB card since probably last xmas, after going to Jellybean it started vanishing and that card is now dead, will not format in anything, PC card reader, laptop or phone. I got a new one and the phone has started ejecting it again. I assume the phone killed the original and this is not a card fault.
I have formatted the new card in PC,phone and my tablet and the phone is still losing it, it's fine on a PC. I am going to replace the SD card socket daughter board on the phone and hope it isn't a fault any worse than that !
Fingers crossed.
Download 4ext Recovery Updater from www.4ext.net and flash 4ext Touch Recovery if you haven't already. Then back up your SD card data, boot into recovery, go to 'wipe | format' and format SD card. Then go to 'tools' and run 'check partition alignment' and 'file system check'.
I used to have this problem real bad a long time ago with both an old 8GB card and a new 16GB card. I messed around a bit with all this and fixed it. I've rarely had the problem since. It happens once in a while, and a reboot fixes it. Not frequent anymore though. Also, format SD card in recovery always. I remember that this problem became very frequent for me when I used to format my SD card in PC with different cluster sizes. Don't know for sure if that was the reason or whether it was coincidence, but I suggest you format in recovery. Unless you use TWRP recovery, which just runs an 'rm -rf' command to delete all folders in SD card and doesn't actually format it. 4ext Touch Recovery is the best recovery for the DHD.

Thanks I will definitely give that a go today before ordering any parts.
I tried all the stuff with formatting and partitions and it made no difference to the new 16GB card, strangely my old 8GB card seems to work fine, so really not sure what would cause this to happen, none the wiser but the 8GB card will do fine for now.

[Q] SD card unexpectedly removed / Damaged SD card

Hello, I am on an HTC One V running PACman ROM 15.3, with the kernel JmzPrimoC+.
I started having this problem a couple weeks ago. It would randomly unmount my SD card saying 'SD card unexpectedly removed'.
This started to happen more and more often until it would say that as soon as I put the SD card in.
I did a factory reset, which helped for about 5 minutes before it started happening again. Now, more recently, it started saying 'Damaged SD card. SD card is damaged. Try reformatting it.'
I put it in my computer (which doesn't show anything wrong with it), and did a full format. It didn't help at all.
This problem is happening with both my regularly used SD card (SanDisk Ultra® microSDHC™ UHS-I 32 GB (the red and grey one)), and my ordinary SD card (8 GB class 4 Kingston).
I don't think this can be a hardware problem because when I boot to recovery, TWRP recognizes it perfectly.
But I don't either see how its a software problem, because a factory reset should have helped...
Please help me, any help will be greatly appreciated.
Maybe its a bug in the rom?

Hhmmm...
Good idea. What other ROMs work with JmzPrimoC+ kernel? AOKP?

OK, update, now TWRP won't read the card! Either card!
Now I'm getting really nervous...
Does this mean it must be hardware?
Is there ANYTHING I can do now?
Please help!
Wow, I screwed up really bad.
I was gonna use TWRP to flash a new rom, so I did a factory reset, and then started flashing the rom.
But in middle of flashing the rom it was interrupted. So I rebooted, rereset, and then I realized... it's not reading my card.
I can boot to bootloader and recovery, but that's it. No OS. I'm screwed.
Is there ANYTHING I can do?
Is it possible to flash a rom over USB? Or SOMEHOW get my card working again?
Just enter recovery and use adb sideload to flash a ROM.

But I need an SD card in order to use ADB sideload!
It fails every time because
Code:
E:Unable to mount /sdcard
Is there ANY way to do this without an SD card?
OK, I was able to do it following this guide.
I flashed the latest version of PACman. Still rejecting my SD card though.
I guess it's a hardware issue. Too bad my warranty is void from bootloader unlock :\
Try to partition SD Card in recovery
I am facing same issue and I came across this thread while looking for solution. Here is what I tried. That resolved issue for five minutes and then damn! same issue again but someone can find possible fix using the info here.
HTC One V rooted, currently running MIUI 3.1.2 with JB 4.1.2
Sandisk 8 GB SD Card.
Firmware CWM Recovery
I was facing same issue even before I rooted my phone while Original HTC ICS 4.0 Firmware was installed. MY observation is the problem starts few months after you start using SD Card. (Insert a new SD card in your phone, it will work fine for days / months and then will start giving same error.
While I tried thousand time to remove SD card, clean slot, clean card and reinsert, it did not work. May be worked just once for few seconds. When I tried to connect phone to PC and browse SD card contents, the card was not detected.
Booted to recovery, tried to format card, not detected. Tried to mount SD card, not detected. Then tried to partition SD card in Advanced options in recovery. The available options are 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1024MB, 2048MB and 4096MB. Since my SD card is 8 GB, chose the largest option. Now got an option to choose SWAP partition size. Chose 256 MB. Next chose option fix permissions, you have to wait until you see message permissions fixed message on screen.
Now rebooted phone, and voila! It worked!! SD card with 3.94GB memory is detected. But what happened to my rest of 4 GB?
Tried many apps to manage SD card from Play store. Using an app called APart, was able to delete partitions on SD card and create new ones. It worked for few minutes and then again I got SD card unexpectedly removed message.
Does this info makes any sense? I am not a developer and do not know much into phones but someone who know might be able to help. Buying a new SD card is not an option here because its going to work temporarily.

[Q] big trouble, cannot mount Ext_MicroSD (M8)

Dear friends:
I don't know what happend, but I cant mount my EXT_MICROSD Card... I flashed the phone, I format the MicroSD Card, I read a lot of threads from here, but nothing, without solution...
well... the first thing was when I flashed TWRP latest recovery (2.8.1, any else) then, microSD card stop to work. I read this treathd (the problem it's the same, but with other smartphone) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=691639 I tried to make all steps, but doesn't work
I set my microSD Card into my card reader on PC and I can use it.
When I get into recovery I can't "read or mount" storage microSD or USB storage"
I'm desesperated right now... :s I don't know what it's the problem!! please help me, give me a chance to repair my error... ;__;
PD. I flash full stock ROM and I tried flashing custom ROM, well... I hace this problem 1 week ago.
NEWS: I flash GPE ROM, I changed MID at least USB Storage WORKED!... but isn't MicroSDCard and the "yellow/white" flash in bootanimation it's gone
Its not clear how you re-formatted the SD. But folks have had differing results whether they use the phone's format function, or otherwise. 3rd party formatting apps on a computer seem to work better. So give that a try.
Did you try another SD (borrow from a friend if you don't have one)? Its possible the card has just gone bad.

Hi, thanks for answer. I tried using other SD Card (in the mobile), but doen't work. I put the SD Card into a SD Card reader (in the computer) and work correctly. In that moment I formatted into Fat32, NTFS, ExFat and work fine in the PC, but doesn't work in the phone.

I recently had similar issue.. either the rom could read the sd card, but not recovery or vice versa (I use Philz).
I reformatted in Philz with default settings and now it works in both rom and recovery...
Think it has to do with allocation unit size. I can't help you with "correct" setting, but I know if you have too big or too small, it can slow down read/write speeds.
What happend when u plug in sdcard in your unit? Does it say it needs to be formatted?
I found some good read about formatting sd card here

When I plug into the phone doesn't work. (now I have TWRP recovery, do you think that Phil it's better than TWRP? maybe I could try flashing that) and... the first time doen't say to make a format. but, yesterday, when I install GPE, say that. when I push format... doesn't happen.
Im not qualified to tell if TWRP is better or not, but Philz is the one I use and it fixed my SD card issue. Just give it a try... you can always flash back to TWRP after if you want
Hi have exactly the same problem? i bought my at&t htc one m8 unlocked but couldn t ever even mount external sd card, they work well outside the phone but don t function inside it, not even recognize an ext sd card.....please someone could give some help to me?
If you try formatting an SDCard on a PC, set the block size to 512 bytes.
Are the SDCard's branded or cheaper end of market?
There was (maybe still is) a problem with SDCard's of a certain version (v10 I think) and this could be a similar thing.

Well, my final score: the SD Card was loose and disconnected inside, a cell technician repair it.
