Hi, I got the steps below from a post made by hijax2001. I modified the steps somewhat to cover the problem you are having. I don't know if they will work, but you can try them if you like.
1) Put update-fire-phone-35.4.6.3_user_463001420.bin in your ADB folder.
2) On your computer go to Device Manager and delete any SD4930UR and or Unknown device that appear when you plug your phone into the computer. Unplug your phone from the computer. Skip steps 3 and 4 if you see "Kindle Fire> Android Composite ADB Interface" when you plug in your phone into the computer.
3) If you need the Kindle Fire ADB drivers then download and install the Kindle Fire ADB drivers on your computer from here: Kindle Fire ADB drivers
4) Plug your phone back into the computer. The drivers for the phone should be installed and you should see "Kindle Fire> Android Composite ADB Interface" in Device Manager. Move on to the next step even if the drivers are not installed.
5) Power off the phone. Turn the phone back on by pressing and holding the Power and Volume Up buttons until the Fire System Recovery screen appear.
6) Use volume down to reach "Apply update from ADB" option, then press Power to select the option.
7) From ADB type ADB devices. If you see what looks like a serial number (letters and numbers), then ADB is seeing your phone and you can skip to Step 9. If nothing there, follow Step 8.
8) If ADB doesn't detect your phone go to Device Manager and right click SD4930UR or the device (Unknown device) that shows up when you plug your phone into the computer. Select Update Driver Software> Browse my computer for driver software> Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer> Kindle Fire> Next> Android Composite ADB interface> Next> Yes> Close>. Go back to ADB and type ADB devices. ADB should now detect your phone.
9) Type the command ADB sideload update-fire-phone-35.4.6.3_user_463001420.bin (Note: you can copy and paste the filename). When the phone display "install from adb complete", press the power button to select "reboot system now". The phone should update to Fire OS 4.6.3.

Hey, well now that my Kindle has had a charging problem for quite some time, I sent it out and got a new one for no charge. So now that I have received it, I'm trying to root it, and I notice that Kindle Fire Utility is not connecting to ADB, so I proceed to re-install the drivers. It worked fine before I updated to Windows 8 from Windows 7, but now it just plain won't install. I do have another computer I can use with Vista and have tried, and the drivers will install on, but it detects my Kindle as an Android ADB Interface, not a Kindle. I have installed the drivers multiple times. So my question is how can I get KFU working? Please respond ASAP. Thanks!
EDIT: Resolved with another computer by uninstalling driver software then reinstalling
For anyone wanting to know how to install unsigned drivers shift+ restart, then select troubleshoot, then advanced options, then startup settings, then restart. After reboot select f7 to disable driver signature enforcement it will reboot again, then simply just install the driver.

No comment on the win8 since I haven't had a chance even looking at it.
On the other computer, it seems the driver installed correctly except that a normally booted up KF should read Android Composite ADB Interface.
W8 and KF - ADB finally recognized it.
I finally got adb to recognize my Kindle Fire on Windows 8. Device Manager still thinks it's a Android ADB Device - but at least ADB works.
[DISCLAIMER - I'm not a windows guru, so anyone who is feel free to adjust, or comment on these instructions to make them better. This worked on my W8 computer - I won't guarentee that it will work on yours...not all W8 installations are the same!!]
Before you preform this - make sure you have the latest Google SDK installed. If you're not computer literate (meaning you can administer your own computer without help) then DON'T do this.
Here's what I did to make it work.
First you will need to set up W8 to install unsigned drivers as suggested by Thepooch in post #2 of this forum.
Windows Key + C - brings up charms
Shift + Restart from the power menu
Select Troubleshoot
Select Advanced Options
Select Startup settings
Select restart
When menu comes up after restart - select F7
W8 puts the Kindle at different addresses that W7, so you'll need to edit two files.
Plug in your Kindle to the computer. Open Device Manager under W8 (you need to be computer literate to complete this. You've been warned!)
If you're Kindle shows up as a Galaxy Nexus then uninstall the drivers. Make sure you're Kindle is identified as a Kindle in the build.prop file on the device. If not, just do a quick reinstall of the OS.zip file and that should reset it.
Plug in the Kindle to the computer - Device Manager should find it as a Kindle Fire
Now right click on the Kindle Fire (should have yellow exclamation marke), open the properties tab.
Click on the Details Tab, select Hardware ID's. The Hardware ID for the Kindle on W8 is different that W7! You need to edit two files to adjust the hardware ID's so ADB will find the Kindle.
Leave the Properties Windows Open.
Go to C:\Users\"Your user folder"\AppData\Local\Android\android-adk\extras\google\usb-driver\
Open android_winusb.inf and insert the following three lines under [Google.NTx86] and [Google.NTamd64]
;Kindle Fire
%SingleAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_18D1&PID_D002
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_18D1&PID_D002&MI_01
VERY IMPORTANT: The VID_#### and the PID_#### should MATCH what is displayed in the open Properties windows - check and make sure these numbers match!! Your Hardware ID's could be different!!
Save this file.
Go to c:\users\"Your User Name"\.android
Open adb_usb.ini with notepad.
Key in 0×18D1 (This is the same number you used in the VID_#### and PID_#### from the properties window - make sure it matches!)
Now go back to the properties window.
Select the general tab
Select update driver ....
Select Browse my computer for driver software to locate the driver software manually.
browse to C:\Users\"Your user folder"\AppData\Local\Android\android-adk\extras\google\usb-driver\ - select ok and install the driver
W8 will give you a big, nasty security prompt (only if you've enabled installation of unsigned drivers) - just hit okay.
The driver should install and you should see the Kindle as an Android ADB device now.
Testing Kindle Fire adb USB driver
Bring up command prompt (CMD).
Type adb kill-server then enter.
Type adb devices then enter.
That’s it. You should see Kindle Fire as one of the devices.
You should now be able to use ADB to manage your Kindle.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

Really needs to be in Q+A not dev.....
Try this;
Download the Android SDK and unzip it and copy the 'adt-bundle-windows' folder to your documents folder
Navigate to Documents/adt-bundle-windows/sdk/tools and run the android app - this opens the android SDK manager.
Go to tools - Manage-addon-sites and select the User defined Sites tab. Click new and add the following url
http://kindle-sdk.s3.amazonaws.com/addon.xml
Hit OK and close
Now scroll to the bottom on the SDK manager and under extras will be 2 kindle fire options 'kindle fire device definitions' and 'kindle fire USB driver' select both and install.
Now close the SDK manager.
If you have previously used your kindle on your PC, plug it in and go to device manager and un-install the drivers for it - now unplug it.
Navigate to \Documents\adt-bundle-windows\sdk\extras\amazon\kindle_fire_usb_driver and install the kindle USB drivers
Now add the location of the ADB.exe file to your path
You should now be able to plug in your kindle and execute adb devices and see your kindle - that means your good to go.

I downloaded the SDK and it didn't have a 'adt bundle' in the contents but i ran sdk manager and I had already added the link you mentioned and I also had already added the extras you mentioned earlier from a article I read and Nothing so I stumbled across this article and it had a few extra steps so I thought to give it a try only problem is, When I go to my device manager to uninstall the kindle drivers i don't have that option to uninstall a 'kindle' driver rite below it there's a android adb interface and i have the option there to uninstall but before I did so I wanted to post here what's going on with me. I wonder if it worked for the person who started the post?

Worked perfectly and allowed me to root using the other guide in the forum.
Posted using my Kindle Fire 2.
Are you using the adb from the latest sdk?
I couldn't get adb to recognise my kf2 until I used the latest adb.exe
I rooted my both kindle´s before a week.
no idea why the other driver did not work.
The Driver from http://kindle-sdk.s3.amazonaws.com/addon.xml work perfectly.
I had this same issue until I updated the driver with the latest. I don't have it in front of me, but when I looked at it, it's dated approx Dec 8th 2012 in Device Manager. Update the driver to the latest and you should be good to go.
know that if you install the drivers after connect your kindle it can mess it up, if you go into device manager and uninstall the drivers after you've disconnected you're kindle and install them then reconnect it, it should work.

Powerpoint is so right here, If you use any linux distribution, it's going to be much easier to get your kindle connected to adb.
Do we even have a q&a or general section for this device? Bought, rooted and turned into a tablet today

This probly isnt the right place for this but I have been to so many areas and so many websites that I am crosseyed now. I managed to root my kindle the other day and was attempting to install a mod on it. At this point I cant even remember which site I was on to share the steps I took. Needless to say, I messed up and now the kindle boots to to the logo for a few seconds, shuts off and boots back to the logo, over and over. I'm not very good at all this but not completely stupid either. I'm simply ready to pull my hair out. I have installed Android SDK and am having trouble getting the correct drivers for my kindle apparently. Its a kindle fire hd 2012. I went through all the trouble of installing the sdk and got to the part with the addons and manually putting in the amazon site, only to read on and discover its no longer supported so I can not get the different kindle fire definitions. In my device manager, it shows kindle fire and expanded shows Android ADB Interface (no composite.. does it matter?). I have verified that abd is installed and working, but doing a devices command, doesnt show any devices. It executes without errors, just doesnt list anything. I have a fastboot cable and it does currently say Fastboot on the kindle when I plug it in.. thats all it says tho, is it supposed to go any further then those words?
I have tried so many suggestions on here to get it to see my kindle to no avail. I follow tutorials, that seem to link to other tutorials because the previous ones had prerequisites and THOSE have links for downloads that no longer work and so I do a side load of a webpage trying to find the missing download I need and THOSE pages end up leading me somewhere else or going a different route then the previous tutorial took me and I just CAN'T get anywhere with this! It shouldnt be this hard (and I'm venting at this point so I apologize). Does anyone have an UPDATED (2018) tutorial for getting my kindle back to where it will boot up... assuming my computer will ever see it (windows 7 btw). Thanks in advance.
Hi all,
I've spent the last hour or so looking over posts, trying to solve my problem. Neither Saferoot nor KFU will root my device.
Step-by-step of my Saferoot attempt:
1. Install drivers (from KFU) and reboot PC
2. Run "install.bat"
3. Type "Y" for BusyBox
4. Prompted to plug in device... plugged in my KF
5. I am told:
"Watch your phone. If you see the "Allow USB debugging?" prompt. Tap on the "Always allow from this computer" checkbox then tap ok.
If this script appears to be stuck at "Waiting for your phone to appear", then you should tap on the USB icon in the notifications that says "Connected as a media device". On the "USB computer
connection" page, switch between "Camera" and "Media Device" to see if the device appears.
[*] Waiting for your phone to appear"
The thing is, there is no option to allow USB debugging (there is no prompt on the KF), and neither is there a USB icon in notifications. All I see on the screen is an image of a USB plug and a message stating "You can now transfer files from your computer to Kindle" and a button to Disconnect. Using Saferoot, I'm stuck here.
Step-by-step of my KFU attempt:
1. Ran "install_drivers.bat" and rebooted PC
2. Ran"run.bat"
3. ADB Status: Online
Boot Status: Unknown
4. Began to "Install Permanent Root with Superuser"
5. I was given this message:
5251 KB/s (510876 bytes in 0.095s) couldn't write bp1, panic!
The kindle has been told to reboot in Fastboot Mide.
twrp.img has been found
fff.bin has been found
***Notice***
Fastboot uses a different deice that ADB. You should check device manager for "Kindle" or "Amazon"
If you see it, rerun the driver installer that came packaged with KFU.
Installing FFF... (waiting for device)
6. I went to Device Manager and saw something labeled "Kindle Fire". I reran the install_drivers.bat
7. Now "Kindle Fire" has disappeared and "SAMSUNG Android Phone" has replaced it
8. Nothing happened either on the Kindle Fire or in KFU for the next 5 minutes
Am I doing something wrong? I'm not 100% sure I'm doing this right, even though I followed that guide. If anyone wants to help, I can Skype, thus helping to facilitate the process.

I scrounged my house looking for the original Kindle Fire cable. Once I found it, I ran Saferoot using that, which caused it to work.
(Coincidentally, I was following your tutorial on YouTube @sd_shadow)
I love CM11 but I'm just not having great service anymore like I did with the Fire OS... Now here is the question... I have the At&t version with 464 installed... Then installed the CM11 now is it possible to install 463 OS from the unlocked version so that I can install the play store and Google services... Amazons app store lack a lot of apps I currently use... If so how do I go about doing that?
1. Download the "GSM unlocked" firmware image: http://fire-phone-updates.s3.amazon...update-fire-phone-35.4.6.3_user_463001620.bin
Assuming you are using Windows 7 / 8 / 10, if not, don't bother reading the following wall of text:
2. Connect device to PC & boot in recovery: PWR + VOL. UP (hold both buttons until recovery screen appears)
From the list, choose "Apply update from ADB"
3. In Windows, run the "CMD": adb sideload 'name_of_your_bin_file'
I recommend renaming the the downloaded file to "update.bin" so you can just type in cmd: adb sideload update.bin
4. If you have trouble getting your device recognised after entering recovery / ADB sideloading mode:
If you boot up your phone in recovery mode / ADB mode, you will need additional ADB device drivers for your Windows system.
The regular (Amazon / Kindle) USB driver that is used when you connect your phone to the PC won't work, it's simply not the same method.
That's why your phone "disappears" as soon as you (re)boot into recovery / ADB sideload mode.
Open your "device manager" (assuming, you're using Windows as your main OS) and check for your device with missing drivers.

It worked for a few thousand people here on XDA, if it doesn't for you, try this one:
http://adbdriver.com/upload/AdbDriverInstaller.exe
Maybe you need to manually check for the "new" device and update the drivers:
Open the device manager while your phone is connected in recovery mode.
Look for its entry in the device list.
Remove it (Deinstall it).
Then "scan for hardware changes":
The device should appear in list the again, it will install the needed driver automatically (best case scenario)
or
you will have to update the device drivers manually:
If everything worked as planned, it should look like this: next to your device name, it will say "sideload":
Bingo,
Thanks for the guide, but I cannot get my computers to recognize the Phone in recovery ADB mode. It shows the device description as SD4930UR. It only shows as unknown. The hardware IDs are VID_1949&PID_0800. I tried the linked tool (both the 1.4.2 and 1.3 version he had) and the google drivers.
What is the exact driver that works for you?

I used the "15 seconds ADB Installer" v. 1.3, so the OS used the drivers from there (on Win 7 x64). Use a USB 2.0 port, just to be sure.
The drivers that work on my system might not work for your configuration...
Are you using Win 10? If so, have you tried updating the drivers with the integrated update function?

It seems that on Windows 10 it works/looks different. I updated the driver that was suggested but I had another one, which also needed updating which I have just done and appears to now let the CMD see the device properly and also allowing me to sideload.
Device manager does not see it as an Android device but as a Samsung device. Not sure why this is unless the device drivers used were Samsung ones but I guess that is irrelevant now.

I can't access my phone from my computer to run the .bin after rebooting it into recovery mode. The download links for that driver installer you linked to don't work. In the device manager my phone shows up as 'SD4930UR' I've tried updating it automatically it returns to that, also after uninstalling.

On the right choose model Android Composite ADB Interface

Good lord...tried all of that and more and still not able to get my device to show up in ADB. The last installer gives me the message "[Error] Incompatible with Win8 x64". So two questions...anything else I can try for drivers, or, can I use a method other than ADB, such as Safestrap?
Thanks again for all your insight on this forum
EDIT: For anyone that struggled as much as me to finally get drivers to work, this method ultimately worked as posted by @hijax2001
4) I also grabbed the Kindle Fire ADB drivers from here for convenience in Step 7 (below) https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B1Z1J6LQic8PQjFjS0FpVGVia2M/edit
7) For me, ADB did not initially detect my phone. I ended up having to go into Control Panel in Windows, to Device Manager, find the Fire phone, choose Update Drivers, then Browse My Computer, Let Me Pick, Show All Devices, Have Disk, then find the folder from Step 4 (above) and add Android Composite ADB Interface by hand. Once I did that, I unplugged and replugged the USB to the phone and then typed "ADB devices" again at the ADB command prompt, like in Step 6. There it is! Ok, next step...

I'm not familiar with adbdriverinstaller, but which ever you use, make sure you are running the installer as admin (right-click on the installer). Also, if you extract the 15 second installer exe with 7zip you get access to the drivers installers separately. Maybe try manually installing them.

Ran 15s ADB. I right clicked SD4930UR in device manager. After selecting update driver, then 'Let me pick from a list..' there is no 'left' or Google listed. It loads a list int he center of the screen of generic hardware devices.. the only one that pertains to a phone is 'mobile' and after selecting that there are no driver options to be found. There is no 'android' to select from that list.
It's doing this on both windows 7 and windows 10.

I tried this method, to install 4.6.3 unlocked over my ATT (now carrier unlocked) 4.6.4. After I sideloaded, I get the following lines in Recovery, indicating that this didn't work. Any thought? Is there something else I need to do to be able to install the GSM on the ATT version?
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E: footer is wrong
E: signature verification failed
Installation aborted
EDIT: Determined that the file I originally downloaded may not have been complete and sure enough a second version is larger...

I think those steps are for Windows XP. For Windows 7, 8, or 10 use the following steps to update the driver:
Those steps are for Google USB driver. For Amazon Kindle Fire USB driver, use the following steps:
1) Right click SD4930UR or the device (Unknown device) that shows up when you plug your phone into the computer.
2) Select Update Driver Software> Browse my computer for driver software> Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer> Kindle Fire> Next> Android Composite ADB interface> Next> Yes> Close>.

Ohhhh okay thank you for explaining this. After finding KindleFire down the list I was able to update my drivers. I've now installed the update to both of my ATT Fire phones, and both are now 4.6.3 and working great with working playstore options.
Thank you jack9955 and everyone else for the tutorials.. much appreciated!
How to Setup the Fire phone for ADB
An illustrated guide ... 2015-09-15
Open open Device Manager. This is what my 4.6.3 Fire phone looks like when plugged in normally to my Windows 7 computer. Power it off and boot into the stock recovery using PWR + VOL UP (hold both buttons until recovery screen appears). The Fire device will disappear from Device Manager.
At the phone's recovery menu choose "Apply update from ADB". Back in Device Manager do a Scan for Hardware Changes and you should now see this. Right click on the Fire and choose uninstall.
Grab "15 Seconds ADB Installer" and install it as admin and hit yes for everything. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2588979
Now scan for hardware changes again and you will see this new device. Right Click this device and choose Update Driver Software.
From this window choose "Browse my computer for driver software."
From this window choose "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer."
From this window choose "Show all devices."
In the section on the left that says Manufacturer find "Google Inc." Then, on the right, choose "Android Composite ADB Interface." Accept through any warnings.
The Device Manager should now show this.
Open up a cmd prompt and test that adb can see your phone with the "adb devices" command. Now you can sideload 4.6.3 or whatever.

I see there are atleast two USB drivers you can use to set up ADB on the Fire Phone. Amazon Kindle Fire USB driver and Google USB driver. If Google USB driver is installed, you should select "Google, Inc." for Manufacturer. For Amazon USB driver, you should select "Amazon.com" for the Manufacturer, Device Manager will show the device as Kindle Fire> Android Composite ADB Interface.

I've also noticed some people using the Amazon drivers. But they're not included with "15 Seconds ADB".
Works seamlessly too on any linux terminal
Just, so you know, your method works very well too on any linux computer. I had the same issue and now it is fixed. I can write a tutorial complimenting this if needed.

We can't do CM12 because the Fire Phone's bootloader is still locked and the current FireOS 4 is based on KitKat. Unless Amazon unlocks the bootloader or releases FireOS 5 for these phones, we are stuck in KitKat (CM11).
Will applying update from adb format the phone..hopefully it will
I dont understand what happened to my Fire phone. All I can see is Recovery mode options( reboot system now, apply update from ADB, wipe cache, factory reset) and No command red triangle below. What I did is following:
-connect via USB to computer
-copied photos and videos to PC
-left it connected to PC and went out for an hour to let it charge
-came back and I see this blue menu
-tried factory reset/wipe but after amazon logo loading it will come back to this menu
Phone was previously rooted using king root (super SU) without any issues.
What a ****ty phone! What shall I do. thanks for the help.
So you see the recovery? if yes then just wipe factory/data / cache then reinstall CM11
Well, the first thing you should do is to create this thread in the correct forum...

thanks for the reply. How do I install CM12 or fire phone stock ROM. I don't have custom recovery installed. My computer cannot see phone via USB anymore. I also installed drivers and tried to push stock rom via adb but I get error device not found.
Is there a way to pull out battery. I had to left phone at recovery screen all night and is now completely drained.

I don't think you need to remove your battery. Recharging your phone and and reinstalling Fire OS should get your phone back working. When the USB driver is installed correctly and the computer cannot see your phone via USB, you need to manually update the USB driver. Following the steps below to install Fire OS and if needed to manually update the USB driver.
1) Download the Fire Phone software update for your phone and move it to your ADB folder. If you like, you can rename the file to update.bin.
2) Power off the phone. Turn the phone back on by pressing and holding the Power and Volume Up buttons until the Fire System Recovery screen appear.
3) Use Volume down to reach "Apply update from ADB" option, then press Power to select the option.
4) Plug your phone into the computer. The drivers for the phone should be installed. In Device Manager, you should see either "Android Device or Kindle Fire> Android Composite ADB interface>", if not, right click SD4930UR or the device (Unknown device) that shows up when you plug your phone into the computer. 5) ADB should now detect your phone, if not, see How to Setup the Fire phone for ADB.
6) On your computer launch ADB and and type the command ADB sideload "type the filename of the update here" (Note: you can copy and paste the filename). When the phone display "install from adb complete", press the Power button to select "reboot system now". The phone should update to Fire OS

If anyone is wondering, Holding the power button for 10-20 seconds force power off the phone. Plus don't leave your phone in the recovery screen for long periods of time because that might damage your lcd.
