Possible to sideload apps remotely (not on same network)? - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to sideload apps onto the Fire TV without being on the same network?

If you are asking about ADB, you can. But only if you can open port 5555 (or any port) on the FTV's network and forward that port correctly to your FTV device IP and port 5555 on your router. But be very leery about this, ADB has no authentication or encryption and if you leave port 5555 open, you will open your FTV to attacks. A better option would be to run something like SSH server (e.g. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=berserker.android.apps.sshdroid&hl=en ). It is a more secure option. I am sure there are other and/or better options. But, any solution that you implement should have some sort of authentication and encryption. And you will need to have rights on the FTV's network router to implement NAT rules.
EDIT: If you can control the remote network's router, you can run a VPN server on it like PPTP or OPENVPN. Newer routers with later firmwares have the ability to run VPN server on them. Or, you can flash the router with something like DD-WRT and that gives you the option to run a VPN server as well. If you can VPN into the network, you don't need to open any ports or need any NAT rules. It is the easiest setup and very secure (OpenVPN option).
Also, you can install somethng like WEBKEY (I don't know if it is allowing new account creation) but it needs a rooted FTV. But, it is an awesome piece of software that gives you true RDP capability into your FTV as well as give you a proper shell to interact with your FTV remotely. The one big drawback is that it works only over HTTP if your port for HTTPS is not open to the outside world.
Another option is AIRDROID. It does not need rooted FTV and if I remember, you can install apps using it (though not using ADB).

You can install Box! Upload any apk toy want from your phone to your Box acct. Then use for tv app box with the same account to download the apk...

Need something that doesn't require root and be able to download straight from the Amazon app store on the AFTV box/stick. AIRDROID isn't on there unfortunately....

Q: Proxy/Internet Passthrough/USB Question

Hi there my genius peers,
I apologize if this question has been asked, however I did search but it's so confusing due to the nature of the question, I will try and simplify what I want...
At work, we are now behind a silly proxy server that is blocking websites such as Mibbit that I was using for web IRC.
We do however have an independent adsl modem with wireless and I can connect to this and browse the net on my phone unrestricted.
My question is, can I run a Proxy server on my Desire HD, have my phone connected to my computer via USB, and then specify Firefox on my computer to connect to the net using the phone proxy server?
I understand tethering can allow the computer to use the phone's internet connection, however I work in an enterprise environment and want to restrict this to just a single web browser rather than all applications on my computer, hence running a proxy server on the phone.
---------- Post added at 01:53 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:49 PM ----------
My understanding is that I would need:
* proxy server daemon running on my phone
* My phone to act like a ethernet network device to my computer, so I can specify a IP address in Firefox's proxy server settings.
I'm not sure if this is possible?
Solved myself
At the moment, using Proxoid to do this...
I found all the info in the following sites if you need to know.

VPN Client on the Fire TV

Hi,
I'm in France and trying to set up a VPN client on the Fire TV.
The only decent I've found on the store is VPNroot which won't connect and display a "socket address family" error.
I'm using Boxpn service which works great on my desktop/mobiles.
Anyone succeeded in setting a VPN client on the ftv ?

Not yet. I have tried HMA and vyprVPN the apps crash when connecting to a server. You could do what I did and install DD-WRT on your router, granted your router is compatible. It works great for me and a have everything behind that router protected by the VPN
Yes i'm working on the router side too, but still thinks it'd be great to have the client running on the FTV itself.

Yeah, it would be cool to take it anywhere with you and just fire up the VPN app and get all the content without having to worry about carrying a router with you. ill keep looking into it. will update if find anything
Tun.ko with droidvpn works.

Proxydroid with socks5 algo works.

I'm afraid, Fire TV OS is not particularly receptive to VPN usage however, if your router supports DD-WRT firmware, it's a good news because DD-WRT has the option of selecting different VPN configurations like: PPTP, L2TP or OpenVPN and Once configured, users on the network don’t need to enter a log in process when they need to activate the VPN. It just starts automatically, so any device connects automatically and easily, giving you all the benefits of using a reliable VPN service.
^^ Macuser just mentioned the tun.ko vpn module got it working. Theres a tun.ko installer by droidvpn in the playstore that some of u guys may want to mess with.
i tried to follow Rose Ab's idea
i found an old router with dd-wrt on it, i now have to networks: one local and one connected via vpn which has the AFTV on it.
it works great

Care to share how you configured the two networks? I'm thinking about doing the same thing, but can't find a reliable guide to do so.
I have two routers - both configured with dd-wrt. I find that when I plug my second router (w/vpn) into the first's LAN port, I can never get a connection to pass through. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

actually, i have one router for my "usefull" network wich is configured as a gateway (you can use your internet box too). The other is configured as a vpn connected client, connected on the first, making a network for devices that need to be connected to the USA. I use purevpn and they have good tutorials for tomato or ddwrt and other kind of routers.
I also have a NAS with two ethernet ports... each connected on a different network, so it can be available from the fire tv and my computer

Thanks for clarifying. I think I got it working on my end by configuring the 2nd router to use the first router's IP address as the gateway and local DNS server. Still not my preferred option (waiting for the PIA android app to function by itself), but it will work for now. Cheers.
wouldnt it be better to just load up DDWRT on a router and configure your vpn from there?

The best option avalaible is proxydroid.
Droidvpn is too slow.

There is a thread on reddit that explains both using the OpenVPN client directly on FireTV or split-routing setup.
Here is the link to use the OpenVPN client natively on FireTV:
reddit.com/r/fireTV/comments/2b4hlh/finally_got_vpn_working/
Here is the link to use OpenVPN on the router and selectively route traffic over the tunnel for the FireTV:
reddit.com/r/fireTV/comments/2b4hlh/finally_got_vpn_working/cjwup38
I'm sure you can adapt the instructions to suit dd-wrt. And if you can't, maybe you should switch over to OpenWRT.
P.s. I'm a lurker so I cannot generate links until I've posted 10 times. Maybe a mod can do it, or someone else can repost it, or better yet, transcribe the instructions.

I was able to get a split tunnel up and running on an ASUS RT-N66U router running Merlin Firmware. The VPN in Merlin is basically a port of OpenVPN in the tomato firmware implementation. The first step is to create the VPN tunnel and then you can setup the separate routes. For Private Internet Access (PIA). I used the following instructions to setup the tunnel:
https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/forum/index.php?p=/discussion/110/updated-tomato-setup-for-newer-branches-including-tomatousb/p1
Next I followed the instructions on this page for setting up a separate route for my FireTv. With this configuration my AFTV goes through the VPN tunnel and everything else goes through the normal Wan to my ISP. I followed the following instruction. Look at page 2 of the post for the instructions by WIZIN
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9311&highlight=split
This is tailored for ASUS routers, but the idea should not be too difficult to implement on and dd-wrt o tomato firmware.
For me this is a much cleaner solution than running something on the AFTV. It starts up and shuts down with the router, so I don' have worry about restarting it when I reboot on the AFTV or it using CPU and memory on the AFTV.
Please help

VPN to improve Netflix like PIA.com on Fire TV possible?

Just wanted to see if anyone could help.
I want to test the streaming of my Uverse Netflix connection through my VPN that I have. I use Private Internet Access and they have a simple android app that you just login and click connect. My theory is that I'll get better Netflix quality using the VPN.
I also believe this would solve people's issue of blacked out games through things like MLB.com apps.
I side loaded the android app last night and put in all of my account details but when I click connect nothing happens. I loaded this through the firetv main application and also tried to launch directly from XBMC app that was running. Neither would work.
I'm rooted currently and have updates blocked, not sure if that will help at all. Does anyone know of a way I can use either a proxy or even better get this app to connect?
I side loaded a few VPN apps on Fire TV but none worked. I had to install the VPN on my router to make it work.
Has anyone had problems with netfix...out of the box I could never connect...unable to...try again error. Ui 104. I rooted before trying to upgrade. And I upgrade to latest firmware 5117........

I'm afraid, Fire TV OS is not particularly receptive to VPN usage however to enjoy VPN on all of your devices I suggest to flash your current router with DD_WRT firmware.
DD-WRT is a free open source project aimed at developing a Linux based firmware solution that removes the restrictions placed on routers by their default programming. Fortunately, it has the option of selecting different VPN configurations like: PPTP, L2TP or OpenVPN and Once configured, users on the network don’t need to enter a log in process when they need to activate the VPN. I actually tried this and was finally able to get it to work through my router. the problem is that my router is only a 200 megahertz processor so the maximum is about 2 megabits per second which makes Netflix look even worse than normal. Currently on a Linksys WRT54G v2 so I'm taking recommendations on one that can handle PIA.com with full speed.

PPTP VPN client on FTV

Hi, I have a ASUS router loaded with DD-WRT. I have enabled PPTP server on my router. I wish to connect to my router using this PPTP VPN natively from my FTV.
I can connect fine from my Windows 8 machine (and my IPhone), but not from FTV. I understand FTV has been stripped of VPN modules. I am able to successfully connect to my OPENVPN server on the same router from my FTV using a few google play apps like Tun.KO, OpenVPN settings and OPENVPN installer.
I am wondering if there is way to accomplish the same thing for the PPTP? I did try the VpnRoot application, but it gives me an error. Important 2 lines are:
-- Creating PPPoX socket --
-- Socket() Address family not supported by protocol
I researched this error and it seems like FTV (as we already know) is missing pppox.ko (or pppol2tp??) kernel module. Now, there are places to download the supporting files to build this module. I am not sure how to proceed on that (build and install). Or if there is a simpler way to install this on FTV? From my understanding, building modules on linux has to be targeted to the kernel version... So, I am lost and any help is appreciated.
Any luck figuring this out with PPTP?
No, I haven't looked at it furthur. I don't have a linux box, but I did free up some space on my HD to install Fedora. But, I am planning to take a crack at it soon! It would be nice if RBox can include the PPTP support in his pre-rooted ROMs... Not sure how difficult that is for him (yes, its a copout :crying
This might not address your initial question directly, but you can use a script to change iptables on the router to VPN only the IP of the AFTV:
http://serverfault.com/questions/38...-hosts-route-through-openvpn-client-on-tomato
Mind you, this is for Tomato, but DD-WRT uses scripts too. I'm using it with Tomato Shibby BUT with OpenVPN not PPTP...cannot comment on the latter.
I tried a few VPN clients on AFTV, no dice.
Thanks. There was a wiki on dd-wrt on how to selectively route VPN traffic for certain hosts. But don't have a need for it. But it is a good learning post and potentially helpful to folks trying to use VPN to access US based services and not wanting to buy an extra router just for that. Much appreciated.

[Q] Any way to rebroadcast mobile hotspot through a router in home?

So, I hope this doesn't sound too far off. I was grandfathered into unlimited data with Verizon, and want to use it as my main source of internet in my home. I have a smart TV to run netflix/hulu and the like, as well as a media server set up over my wireless network to play movies from my computer. Is it possible to use my Note 4's mobile hotspot, and have the wireless signal rebroadcast through my router? (I have a netgear AC1450-100NAR) It does have a wireless repeating fuction, but it asks for the ip address/mac address for the device it is rebroadcasting. Is this possible to setup, or does anyone have experience setting this up?
Thanks!
John
You could try. Go to settings>about phone>status, scroll down and write down the IP address and Wi-Fi MAC address. Log into your router and turn on repeating feature and add your IP address and MAC address.
Please report back if this works.

Never mind follow the direction above. I had my WI-FI on that's why I had a private IP address.
Try 192.168.43.1. You could also enable the hotspot and connect your TV. You should be able to confirm the network and default gateway (the hotspot address)
Thanks I'll give that a try. The reason I want to share it with a router, instead of just connecting straight to my phone, is I have a ton of devices that need to connect to my router via PC. Printer, Nvidia Shield TV, etc. So having I'd have to keep connecting, and reconnecting devices over and over. So if I can just have everything always connected to my router, I can just connect my router once to my phone, and share my connection with my whole apartment.
This might be too far out but, If that doesn't work for you. I would recommend looking into flashing your router with DD-WRT. Which will open up all sorts of advanced settings on your router and might make it easier to link your phone to it.

I looked into that, and my router doesn't show up :-\ I have a netgear ac1450
I use dd-wrt to do this very often, and on the exact same router too! The AC1450 was a Costco exclusive that was a throttled version of the AC1750 (or better known as R6300v2). It has the exact same hardware specifications, but with a different hardware ID and firmware. you can flash a new hardware ID and R6300v2 firmware, and then either stick with the updated Tx speeds if you decide not to use it as a repeater, or flash DD-WRT and enjoy the increased speeds and repeater options.
You will want to do this to upgrade your router to a r6300v2: http://advancedhomeserver.com/upgrade-a-netgear-ac1450-router-to-ac1750-r6300v2/
then follow the guide here to install DD-WRT: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Netgear_R6300v2
then follow this guide to get the repeater bridge up: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Repeater_Bridge
I do this, but I use a computer and a router. I turn my hotspot on and connect my computer to it, an Ethernet cable runs from my computer to the router. On the computer you have to make a network bridge and then it'll work
