no mobile data, custom or stock, apn change doesn't help - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good day all,
I was hoping someone would help me before i go insane, i can't for the life of me figure out what is the problem with my phone.
I had my m8 for a long time already, approx. For a year or so, and never used mobile data on it. Now recently, i upgraded my plan, and cant get data to work: no 2g or 3g, and the mobile data option in the settings menu says "disconnected because service is unavailable". Now i googled far and wide for a solution, and can't find anything; what was suggested is to change the apn settings (which i did numerous times, even bought a new prepaid sim with a different carrier just to check). Another suggestion was to update the PRL, however, as far as i understand, that is only for cdma phones, not gsm.
I tried a couple of different radios, tried to get back to stock, nothing helped. My m8 is the international version, s-offed, with latest 401 radio.
Could the device be damaged internaly maybe?
Thanks for your help.

So did the SIM from another carrier work (mobile data) or not?

I'm not sure, but i think it should have been on 5.0.1 with the last OTA.

Since you've tried 2 different SIMs from different carriers, different APNs, and different radios, I tend to believe this might be a hardware issue.
What is the phone's CID?

I would run the 401 Lollipop RUU and see if that makes any difference. RUU is a complete image, so we can make sure that everything is on Lollipop and plays well together.

I don't believe radio is the issue. As long as your have voice service, you should at least get EDGE data.

Thanks for the help. I will flash my phone with the ruu and report afterwards.

Well, i just flashed the official 401 RUU, and i still have the same problem. No mobile data, and it still says "disconnected because service is unavailable"

If you know the APN is right, and you don't even get EDGE data (on 2 separate SIMs) than I think you have a hardware issue.

im from a different land completely. I have the ulephone be touch and stock rom and every other rom that is based from stock my internet does not work with selecting the automatic apns from sim or entering manually. Now when i flash a completely custom rom, i add the apn and my internet works for the first time. This may or may not help in his case, but figured id let you know cheers!

Can I convert a cdma htc 10 to a us unlocked

is it possible to convert a sprint htc 10 to unlocked Im fairly sure a vzw can be converted but i dont know about sprint... also are sprint varrients sim unlocked? I ask because they seem to be the cheapest in the us aftermarket...
update (found out how to sim unlock, just need to know if it can be converted?)
You *may* be able to install a ROM for that version, but you can't change the hardware, so I'd look in to what bands, frequencies, etc. that each can use.

What carrier? I have a Sprint variant working extremely well (Viper ROM Nougat) under T-Mobile, both bands 4(LTE) and 2(4G).

Yes. I have a sprint converted to us unlocked on ATT network. I had to S-Off, then use ADB to change CID to 111111 and MID to 2PS65, then run the US Unlocked RUU off HTC website.

Well, to be completely honest, I am still in the Learning stages so I don't know if it were pure luck, but I originally didnt flash any Radio. I literally just ran the RUU, popped in ATT SIM, and it worked. However, I did later encounter a problem possibly related to this. I tried to apply an OTA zip update, and I flashed the Unlocked OTA. Which ended up making my IMEI disappear and the fix ended up being flashing the Sprint radio to the device. I'm still not sure, but I think the issue occurred bc even though my MID is US Unlocked my device still isn't technically US Unlocked so it was the wrong firmware. As for SIM unlocking, I followed the same thread for SIM unlocking the M9 using the NV and Basic Flasher Tools and it worked.

Yes I can try to find it. Obviously it was more than just putting the SIM in, I had unlocked and S-off'd and what not before. I know it was the first Nougat firmware they had for the US Unlocked. I want to say I was on Sprint 1.81xXxX and the unlocked was 2.14xxxx. I'll look it up.

Yes specifically 4G LTE devices. Without touching anything you should be able to insert a SIM for any GSM carrier and it will pick up a signal, and yes ALL LTE bands but I believe you may have to convert to another radio for better compatibility.
All other things you better off converting to US Unlocked or T-Mobile. Those have WiFi integrated for supported carriers.
Totally worked with my Verizon phone. Changed the cid in fastboot and flashed a no wipe us unlocked firmware from sneakyghost. Unfortunately it wiped everything, but I was backed up, so no biggie. Thanks everyone!

It depends what format the RUU is in. If it is .exe then no. If it is .zip it should work

Updated firmware, now doesnt recognize simcard

So after a few months I decided to update my firmware, Im was using the viper 10 rom before hand.
I followed this guide to update it https://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/how-to/2016-05-27-fastboot-flashing-firmware-t3387520
and downloaded the 2.41.617.3 for pme_wl. It flashed successfully and then I updated the viper rom to 5.7.
But now all of the sudden the sim card is not even recognized. It just showed the lte with a cross. And just to make sure the sim card wasn't broken, I put it
into another phone and it worked just fine.

Not sure if the same applies here, but I have a Sprint HTC 10 converted to US Unlocked on ATT running Viper and when I ran a US Unlocked update/RUU later, it made my IMEI change to unknown and say No SIM. The fix was simply to flash the Sprint/original carrier radio in bootloader and it all came back. Worth a try i guess. Good luck.

Im glad that worked for you too man. No I still had/have 4g on ATT network after. Unfortunately thats about the extent of my knowledge as far as radios go, but to double check, I believe there is a forum on here that lists the correct radio #s for each device.

Sim unlock options for GSM Variant

So, after searching the forum, I haven't found anything that really answers my question...
I have the GSM Variant of the HTC 10. It's currently locked to Bell Mobility in Canada. I am looking to unlock this phone without paying Bell the fees they charge for unlocking. From the XDA searches and reading I've done, it looks like there may be a free way of accomplishing this... I found a post that indicates that the Sprint method may or may not work, but you need S-Off...
I found another post that suggests its the exact same as the HTC One M9 and I can use the directions from there. It also indicated that it was only for the Sprint HTC 10 too...
My question is, is there a free unlock method for the GSM HTC 10? Or does it only work with the Sprint version?
According to some googlling, you share the same phone as US unlocked model, based on MID (model ID). You would need S-off to flash a different modem though. modem partition is blocked by s-on feature. sunshine app and java cards are the only way to S-off. both are paid though, sunshine $25.
CID: BM 001
MID: 2PS650000
proceed at your own risk and research well :good:
Right. I think I knew that... ...which means that changing the CID would allow me to flash any RUU for Model 2PS6500, and should theoretically work period.
Which leads to another question I had after posting... Would flashing the US Unlocked RUU remove the sim lock on the phone? I've heard that an RUU replaces everything on the phone with pristine, shiny new code straight from HTC... Would this also replace the code that effectively locks the phone to Bell?
If that is the case, this could be far too good to be true...
Edit: Almost forgot. Perhaps slightly off topic, but what is a java card?

you're welcome and I just google searched quickly and didn't find anything solid but again I'm sure you'll figure out a way.
So, just an update.
I used a website that allowed me to use trialpay to get my SIM Lock code, which worked beautifully.
Unfortunately, Bell Mobility seems to be in the market of continuing to cripple their phones... I've inserted my Rogers sim card and found that voice and text both work on Rogers. Data, does not (cannot set APN settings, not don't know how), along with LTE. Given that the phone supports all the bands that Rogers uses in Canada, I would not be overly surprised to find out that Bell crippled the radio firmware to ensure that the phone would perform it's best only on the Bell network. Heck, they did it with the CDMA Nokia phones, and with the old school Blackberries to ensure their revenue stream...

Maybe now is the time for that s-off and flashing of U.S Unlocked ruu.
The other thing you can try before spending the cash to s-off is unlocking your bootloader, flashing a custom rom and seeing if you can add a new apn from there. I'm very much surprised Bell would block that btw, I've unlocked Bell gsm phones and added new apn settings in the past.
While with XDA im all for free unlocking etc, if you are not S-off then it might be a bit hard
https://sim-unlock.net/site/HTC/10/
Ive had a stupid amount of phones and ive used these guys everytime ive needed a SIM unlock done.
Never failed once and if you can spend the money, it might be worth it in your case here... Against s-off - $25...
For me its a no brainer... I mean for 9 euros?....
But if you have already unlocked and they have crippled it like you say, then deffo go for s off
Fellas, correct me if I'm wrong, but if the SIM is unlocked, then all that's needed is to unlock the bootloader. That can be done for free via HTC Dev if you have tech chops, or via Sunshine (probably the better choice anyway). Then all that's needed is to change the CID and MID, and flash a WWE RUU. That would solve the problem, no?

Yeah that's what I was suggesting as well. Bootloader unlock and flash a custom rom first to see if he's able to add new apns that way, and if that fails just go full s-off and run the unlocked RUU (unlocked is the better option here over wwe, same mid I believe and better support for updates).

This is my thinking... I wanted the US Unlocked version anyway, but got the Bell one since I live in Canada, and was with Bell anyway. Actually, the SIM lock and the bootloader lock are two different locks. You don't have to remove the Simlock to remove the bootloader lock.

I thought about it, but in the end I want US Unlocked due to speediness of updates as well as no more Bell tainted android.
Here is why I suspect Bell blocked it... When I go to view available APN's, all it shows on screen is a message essentially saying APN's cannot be added for this provider.. Also (took me a bit to clue in), LTE doesn't work on Rogers. If I had to guess, Bell wanted to make sure all the HTC 10's it sold stayed on it's network. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest... The Nokia 6275i was a kick butt awesome CDMA phone back in it's day. AMAZING call quality. Think VoLTE quality on 1xRTT. I don't know how they did it, but it must be a mix of pixie dust and unicorn blood... Anyway, every 6275i Bell sold was severely crippled. No Nokia Maps, just Bell's lame interpretation. Google maps wouldn't work either because it couldn't access the GPS, only Bells navigation app could. Couldn't set a custom ringtone unless it was purchased from Bell. Yet every other 6275i didn't suffer from these issues... Just ones sold by Bell.
So, an update to those interested....
I am now S-Off running US Unlocked firmware.
CID: BS_US001
MID: 2PS650000
Flashing to US Unlocked firmware seemed to do the trick for data. I can now set APNs and data does work. YAY!
Things to do:
1) Figure out why LTE signal sucks...
For whatever reason, the HTC 10 doesn't get LTE at home... I had a Samsung Galaxy S7 (SM-G930W8) briefly which didn't always get LTE at home, but it at least had useable signal, whereas the HTC 10 doesn't, at least not on Rogers. When flashed with Bell firmware it worked as good as the S7 did. I have a theory that when I ran the RUU to change firmware variants, it didn't update the modem firmware... Also, upon further research, it looks like there are partitions that store configuration data for the modem called modemst1 and modemst2, which I'd bet are still configured for Bell, which means they probably set it up to never use LTE on another Canadian network unless you can't get signal on anything else...
2) Figure out how to change Device Certification back to certified.
I'm pretty sure this is because the bootloader is still unlocked... I'm going to try setting it back to locked which shouldn't make a difference to my ability to flash because the phone is S-Off anyway but it may make the difference to Google's Device Certification
3) Maybe try an aftermarket rom, etc... Basically whatever I want.
I actually quite like HTC Sense... Not sure I want to get rid of it just yet. Was thinking of going with Viper due to Wi-Fi Calling being enabled/supported since Rogers supports Wi-Fi Calling, and I refuse to believe I can't make it work on here... It worked on the S7 (same model my wife had on Bell), so why can't it work here? I am also open to suggestions as to good roms to use, so if you think it's good, let me know what rom and why and I may just give it a shot...

Yeah, I found the bootloader thing in another thread, thanks for the follow up though.
I've tried flashing US Unlocked, was prompted for a sim unlock code when I put a Verizon sim in my Tmobile phone.
So I tried flashing Verizon firmware, it told me that my verizon sim... was not a verizon sim.
Did the modem reset, didnt make a difference. Not sure what else to try.
Updates
So, as an update to any parties interested,
I've resolved some of the data issues I was having, where data didn't seem to work unless I was using LTE.
It seems that it's a joint problem between me and Rogers.
My problem was that even though the US Unlocked variant appears to be using the same radio firmware as the Bell variant, the Bell variant seems to have better programming, since I've been getting stronger signal in more areas, as well as slightly better throughput on HSPA connections. The issue I had with APN's and Bell firmware seemed to sort its self out after flashing back to the Bell variant from US Unlocked.
The Rogers end of the problem, is the Rogers network in Manitoba appears to have been a joint venture between Rogers and MTS, prior to MTS being bought out by Bell Mobility. Now that Bell has taken control of MTS, it sounds like Bell realized a lot of the MTS equipment was outdated, and has been attempting upgrades, which seem to be causing more problems than what they're worth. A co-worker is with MTS, and has been having a heck of a time with all of his services from MTS, and the technician's he's spoken to have led on to some deeper issues than what he's seeing. I would imagine that since the agreement was between Rogers and MTS originally, that Bell will have to honor that agreement for at least some time, which (to me) says that my HSPA data slowness could be due to Bell attempting to update the shared hardware between MTS and Rogers.

I'm not sure that flashing the VZW firmware would write to RFG_8 (the simlock partition)... If that simlock partition hasn't been rewritten, you're phone is likely still locked to T-Mobile, but with no way to unlock it though the VZW firmware since AFAIK T-Mobile uses an app to remove the simlock. The modem reset would only reset the parameters of the modem, not remove the sim lock...

Cannot connect to LTE (doesn't matter what rom i'm on)

Hi XDA, I have an unlocked pixel XL on verizon network. I cannot connect to LTE or anything other than 2g networks. I have clean installed, changed APNs and tried everything to properly get the LTE back. Help?

I mean this is gonna sound dumb but have you looked at the mobile networks setting page and have your preferred network on LTE?

Yes
Can you change the network operators on 8.1?
Is your unlocked Pixel XL from the USA? It seems it doesn't support the correct bands for your network
All pixels have the same radios. Dial *#*#4636#*#* click on phone info. Change settings if needed
SIM card is toast. I have had this exact thing happen to me. Just go into a VZW store and request a new one. Sim handshake needed for LTE connection only on VZW.

After you got the new sim and installed it did you go back to factory rom and waited a bit for it to connect to the network?

I'm on the February patch, stock. I'm flashing everything, also, is it normal for your phone number to not be your phone number with a new sim?
My number showing up on about phone is 908-770-6054. This is not my number, could it be human error?

Contact your carrier or go in and tell them that it is not your number and that you are stuck on 2g they should be able to tell you how to fix it or if you go in they can fix it
I did contact my carrier, they cannot figure out what to do. Replaced the sim about 4 times, still no luck. I go into testing (secret code) and I am on 1x network @loeffler23
Sounds like your efs data could be corrupt and there is no way to fix that. Or your LTE radio is toast. Did someone try to carrier unlock your phone?

my phone's unlocked by default and there has to be a way to fix efs, not accessible by recovery? (what is efs)
It holds the imei and other radio proprietary info not sure what partition that data is actually in on this device. I think the efs data is no longer in /efs
Twrp used to have a option for efs backup with the data system backup and restore options

T-Mobile HTC 10 to Verizon (Straight Talk)

So I recently moved to a rural part of Ohio, and Verizon is about the only carrier that works here. I have an HTC 10 T-Mobile variant that I Sunshine S-Off'ed and flashed to an HTC branded phone. T-Mobile just game me my SIM Unlock code, and the phone does recognize the new Verizon Sim card. However there is no service at all. So do I still need to flash a firmware?
I really need this to operate on VZW service instead of T-Mobile.
Anyone successfully done this? IS it simple and I'm just missing something?
Thanks in advance.

You'll need to have the verizon radio running on it. You could just flash that, as mentioned here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-10/how-to/vzw-how-to-unlocked-model-vzw-t3376743
In that case you may also need to reset your radio settings to get full service, and it's also described in that thread.
Or, better in my opinion, change your cid and mid and flash the verizon ruu.

Hey thanks! I will look at both options. I am going to use Straight Talk for the carrier since its dirt cheap. I jsut need it to operate on VZW towers.
Thanks again.

Do you know where I can get the instructions for the MID/CID and the RUU files? Its been a while since I changed mine. I would like to try the verizon thing first and see if it works on straight talk. IF not, I would like to be able to flash back to TMO so I at least have a working phone.

Conversion process is described here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-htc-10/how-to/guide-convert-unlocked-to-verizon-t3380615
Verizon RUUs are found here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ve...rizon-official-ruu-1-19-605-9-t3377586/page85
I'd use a Nougat RUU from the above link until you're sure you're sure you wanna stick with the Verizon software. If you install the Oreo RUU, and then downgrade back to T-Mobile which is still on Nougat, you'll lose your radio and will need to to an extra step to get it back.
