ok, sgh-i747. fresh NJ1 rooted flash done yesterday. using phone on straight talk with att sim. supposedly lte capable. at work i can pick up 2-3 bars of lte no prob. runs great. but this morning the phone automatically switched from lte/gsm auto. to wcdma mode on its own. it did this three times in a row inside ten minutes. then all good most of the day. however this afternoon it did it again twice. sticker on phone say i727. phone info states the same. so what would cause a gsm phone and gsm simcard to suddenly go wcdma for no reason? i do suspect a bad sim. ive heen having connection issues as well. at home signal isnt the greatest but on att i always maintained 1-2 bars of 4g. using the straight talk sim it will connect to 4g for a few minutes maybe, and then drop to edge. if i am not on lte, it will not stay on 4g. jumps to edge. its not the phone i dont think. this morning i put my sim in gf phone, same exact phone. entered same exact apn settings, rebooted, and waited. after a minute or two it dropped to g then to edge. her att sim in her phone usually maintains a steady 4g at 1-2 bars. never drops. her sim in my phone works flawless. same thing. steady 4g at 1-2 bars. how is that? doesnt the phones radio determine signal strength and what network type to use? it seems my thinking is wrong. everyone says sim cards have nothing to do with signal but after seeing my ST sim react the same in someone elses phone, i gotta think different. my settings are the most common ones
name: Straight Talk
apn: tfdata
no proxy
port: 80
(i did make an apn with no port set as well. makes no difference to me)
mmsc: http:/ / (no space) mms-tf(dot)net
mms proxy: mms3(dot)tracfone(dot)com
mms port: 80
apn type: default,supl,mms,internet,hipri
i made a few different apns with different type combos. and one with no apn type. each time tho i deleted the apn, then rebooted, then entered settings, rebooted again.
would all the rebooting and different apn settings and messing around mess up a sim card? ive had this card about two weeks. seemed to work really good for a few days. and of course tech support is no help. also, was trying to research ST sim cards to see if some were better or some problematic. found nothing for mine

any help or ideas?

Guys,
Unlocked and rooted One X on AT&T and my pegged out signal keeps changing from H to 3G over and over and over.... you get the picture. Never stays on one very long before changing and will disrupt data services for a brief moment while it does.
Is anyone else seeing this behavior and if so, any fix to resolve?

Yea I notice it. I believe it's part of the way it saves power but idk if thats true because on my Galaxy Nexus, it would almost always stay on "H".
Mine doesn't really switch out of "H" though when actually loading something, just takes a bit to go from "3G" to "H". I've maybe experienced it once or twice when actually loading something where it would switch out of "H" to "3G" while loading something on XDA or a website. But it's usually when connection is weak.
I'm having the same issue.
if it keeps happening, then complain to ATT and ask for credit on your data plan because it doesn't work the way it should.
From what I read, AT&T phones show only h, even though in the background they switch back and forth.
But when you use international phones on the network, it will show the switching around. I'm not sure if that's related to your issue, but over here on rogers, my phone switches between 3g and h constantly, even when I'm at one location.. The thing is that I don't get long disruptions though, if any at all.
I'm on att and don't experience this. My icon switches frequently but I don't see any interruption in service.

Thanks all, just wanted to make sure that I was the only one experiencing. I will probably go into the AT&T store and see if their One XL display units is doing the same thing while I have mine with me.
Could be that "international" issue type of thing... who knows.
Yes, mine does this too. Im on straight talk which uses at&t and it frequently keeps switching back and forth.

Mine should be in on Tuesday. Think we might have the wrong APN's??
Have you checked the APN settings?

Moving from 2/3G to HSPA+ is by design and called fast dormancy. Here's more than you could ever possibly want to know about it.
http://www.slideshare.net/zahidtg/gsma-fast-dormancy-best-practices
It saves battery life and when working properly it's undetectable. That is when FD is active on a device and the network it's using supports it. (AT&T does). If OP's dropping signal something's wrong. I'd check...
- The APN's you use on AT&T must match the plan that's provisioned in your account settings. If you're on a 3G plan (grandfathered unlimited, MediaNet, data for non-Smartphones) use the 3G (Cingular) settings. If you're on a 4G (non-LTE) plan use the 4G (HSPA+) APN. Wrong APN means funky data even if it seems fine sometimes.
- Older SIMs or SIMs from iPhone's in non-Apple devices have caused problems. As has bad surgery in the move to micro. Pop in to an AT&T store and get a new micro SIM matched to the provisioning of your account.
- Bad phone h/w. In not the above it could be the device.
I've just been across the country on the AT&T network and my phone has performed better than my i9100 in picking up and maintaining a signal (I'm on a 3G plan). It's been impressive actually especially in moving from HSPA to Wi-Fi and back. So with the right settings the phone itself should be fine.

Just tried that and it's not working for me. Doubled checked, everything is exactly as he said. I just don't have the option to switch from what it currently is (MediaNet). There's no radio button for the other two. Even after deleting the original (only leaving the two I just made) and restarting, I have no connection to the network.

I agree, the settings aren't working for me either in Orange County, CA
After you set up the new APN's try deleting the old one. You can always get it back by selecting "restore to default."

I had an unactivated micro SIM that I had my corporate account rep activate so my situation's different than yours; the SIM is tied exactly to the settings in my account. I popped it in, it picked up the MediaNet settings, and all was good.
My phone has a single APN so I can't see the way the settings look when there are multiples. The last setting in the active APN is "APN enable/disable" which is greyed out on my because there's no other choice. Did you try disabling it after you got the new APN's entered? Maybe if you do it'll allow you to select the new APN's you created.

My "APN enable/disable" is greyed out as well. I tried the new APNs in the other thread and couldn't get a internet connection. The only successful APN with the One X was the medianet. Other than that, I'll settle for the medianet but only wanted to change it to get better speeds in my area since this phone is capable of receiving up to 21mbps.

The highest I've seen on either an international phone or an AT&T 21MB-capable phone is 8MBish down. That's in TX where there's lots of bandwidth shared by not a lot of people. In markets like LAX, NYC, and SFO you're lucky to break 5MB because of the congestion. I've seen 2MB and under in Manhatten. HSPA+ speeds on AT&T are very much YMMV.

Okay, so I'm currently running Jedi X 6.(something, the newest AT&T Rom). Now, I was running version 6 before with no problems. 4G was working fine (we recently got 4G in my area.) The tower is right down the road and I've always had full bars when on LTE. It seems that since, or at least within a few weeks of flashing this new Jedix6.whatever I can not for the life of me get LTE working. This isn't an "I can't tell if the icon means LTE" thread. I went into my "about device" and my mobile network type is always on HSPA:11, UMTS:3 or HSPAP:15. I tried flashing the stock modem in the "One stop shop" thread, I also made a new APN with all of the correct information for AT&T LTE. Neither worked. So my question is: is it the ROM? If so, what ROM definitely has it working? And if not, any suggestions as to what a fix might entail? It's probably a little selfish but I bought a phone with LTE capabilities and I'd like to use it. Any input is appreciated!

so you using the PTA apn? Cause a rom wont stop you from using LTE... So your saying recently 4G was turned on in your area? cause AT&T Calls HSPA+/3G they call it 4G and LTE is called 4G LTE.
Also how do you know LTE is not working? Speed tests? No 4G icon? No/slow data?
Just curious, because I have noticed sometimes when in 4G LTE areas my data is slow/unusable with full bars and legit 4G LTE connection.

i dont know whats in your market area, but in mine the LTE has been off and on the past few days
Okay, as I stated in the OP I have been using LTE 4G. About 2-3 months ago they put 4G LTE in my area which is about an hour from Cleveland Ohio. Also I frequently go to Cleveland on weekends and they've had it for at least a year, so I know it's not just the towers in my area, as I used to get LTE there and at home, and now I don't get it in either place. I know it's not LTE anymore because I'm getting the H+ symbol along with the info from "about device" that I put in the OP. If my phone was connected to 4G LTE it would say LTE:14. I hope that helped clear the air of some things... Any other ideas? So a rom won't affect it at all?
Also this is the APN I tried to put in:
Name: ATT Phone
APN: Phone

MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310

I've had StraightTalk, using AT&T towers for just over a month (using an AT&T GS3). This was prior to their announcement about LTE becoming available. Everything pointed to needing a new sim card to take advantage of it. Yesterday, I noticed the LTE icon in my status bar. At home I get around 17 mb/s, and at work I get only like 1.5-2 mb/s.
I first noticed the icon on the CM 10.2 9/23 nightly. I'm running the most recent 10.2 nightly, and I'm still getting LTE.
Has anyone else had LTE pop up, when using Straight Talk using the old sims?

I have had straight talk for about a year and a half, long before LTE was available on straight talk. I tried to switch the old apn to the lte with no luck. I would just not get data. I ordered a new sim and intended to have my number transferred over to it. I called customer service this morning with sim in hand and asked to be upgraded to lte. They transferred me to someone that could help and he took about 10 minutes and I did not even need my new sim. They did something on their side. I asked if I would need to change the apn and they said no the old one would work. That turned out to not be true. I drove into town as I do not have lte at home and I had no data. I switched to the lte apn rebooted and boom LTE! So it seems now if you have an old att sim that was HSPA only you can call and get it switched over. I was shocked that I got right though and did not get put on hold forever and this worked. Maybe they hired more customer service reps, or I just was lucky.

This is correct they can provision your old sim to work on LTE as long as unused the new apn. It is hit or miss when u call there customer service odds are you will get someone who exactly knows what they are doing 1 out of 10 lol

The above posted APN settings are exactly what I am using and LTE seems to work fine. Mind you I purchased the sim card in Nov. of 13. GS3 I747 4.1.2, downgraded to 4.1.1 root injected, sim unlocked then flashed to Hyperdrive 16. All is well with LTE on this end.

I think it might depend on the service area. Where Im at I only get H+ but a hundred miles away in a bigger city bang it auto switches to LTE and hello speed, goodbye battery.
Hi all,
Before I rooted and put a costum ROM on this E980, I would get LTE service on this phone with the cricket SIM, about 6-8 mbps, since I put the custom rom on, I dont have any data from the get go, but if I put the cricket APN settings in, I get H+ data but its less then 1 mbps... I need to figure out how to to get the LTE to work on this.
When i try to enter AT&Ts APN settings into the phone, and I hit save, to save the APN settings, it wont save it and everything disappears. I've tried this on 3 different ROMS..
any help would be appreciated.
Thank you
If it was that slow it wasn't LTE. For example when using my Sim in a vzw phone if I set to global it would say LTE but be slow as balls, not send texts. When set properly it said H+ and everything worked

AT&T Caps cricket customers to 8MBps on the LTE network, at&t customers get 40mbps or so. but I'm getting under 1mbps... has to be some sorta setting or APN issue. When it used to say LTE, i was getting close to the cap of 8mbps.
Then try flashing a radio. The ROM itself shouldnt mess with anything like that really
have an unlocked S9. 4G/LTE intermittently flashes in the header, but unable to make calls. texting works fine. carries says buy a new phone.. put in a att sim and phone switched over to att (from TMO) no problems, still not working. yes I updated the network settings also.
anyone else with same problem or ideas how to fix?
I have exactly the same problem. My S9 quit working on 2/25 and was told by PureTalk that It was time for a new phone. I backed it up and did a factory reset and worked fine until yesterday morning. Same issue. On hold now for just over an hour to try one last time with PureTalk customer service. This will be my last attempt to "fix" the issue. Looks like I'll be headed to AT&T...
I am looking at options to replace myself.
With puretalk I'm seeing weird things going on with this. My S9 stopped working about March 2nd. When I switched to an alternate installed APN called ATT Nextgenphone it had Fato added on the types, I could make calls with that, until I restarted then I couldn't. But I couldn't text. If I switched back to the Puretalk suggested APN, I could text but I couldn't make calls. I tried the same thing with an S10 I got because at first they said it was compatible then a day later they said it was not compatible. I got same results with it. I can call on one APN but not text and I can text on the other APN but not call.
So the phones are able to do both but there is something with their tech that they can't handle it. I am currently trying to port to another carrier that says I can get 5G on an S10.
I put port request in but their porting department said it takes 24 hours to port. We'll see about that.
Added:
As it turns out Puretalk lied again, it didn't take 24 hours. It was ported within an hour.
I already had gotten a US Mobile sim card so I attempted to get that going on my S10. Calls worked but texting images didn't. I tried some of their online help steps which are numerous. After those I couldn't make calls (something about setting up LTE Only setting - BAD). So I set back to the original from that and called them They gave me the correct APN settings which are these.
Everything works now. Puretalk and their AT&T shutdown games are history to me.

The problem is with the budget phone plans that only allowed 3g, not the S9 phone. But all you should need to do is get a new 4g SIM card from your provider , not a new phone.
Don't know if this is a permanent solution. My family has 2 s9 and 6 s9+ phones all with pure talk. Half of them quit working half still work fine. The only difference was in the model number. (s9) SM-G960U quit working, (s9) SM-G960U1 still works. (s9+) SM-G965U quit working, (s9+) SM-G965U1 sill works. So using this forum I figured out how to flash SM-960U1 firmware to the SM-G960U phone using Frija/Odin. Now both s9 have U1 firmware and both are working flawlessly with pure talk. Haven't yet had opportunity to flash s9+ phones yet but I am expecting the same results. Hope this helps.
