Rooting ZenFone2 ZE551ML using Mac OSX Yosemite - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Can anyone please help rooting a brand new ASUS ZenFone 2 ZE551ML using a Mac OSX Yosemite? I am a newbee to Android and want to install Ubuntu using LinuxDeploy.
Thanks in advance !

I don't know how to do it on MacOS so I recommend you to bootcamp to Windows and do everything with your phone

Hey,
Did you figure it out yet? as long as you have the drivers, you basically just run everything through terminal instead of command prompt.

actually its easier on OSX, no need to install any driver, just plug your phone and open terminal.
taken from this thread :
Asus Zenfone 2 | Resources all in one thread
3.1) Rooting Zenfone 2
Method 3 (1 CLICK ROOT TOOL):
Download 1 Click root tool fromMEGA https://mega.co.nz/#!R8k0zACY!xaiNnxyAijsUwJL3l9koo1Iyr-pIjQmwVkVE8A_lv8Y
or from Google Drive https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B936USMlQhtKbmZLZDE3N1JMazA/view?usp=sharing
Unzip and run root.sh
open terminal, cd to directory or drag the folder to terminal then type
Code:
[B]./root.sh[/B]
basically, every linux method on that thread working on OSX too.
hope it help.

[HOWTO] simple. window usb driver with adb shell without android sdk.

hi just found another method to install the adb driver for SGW. because i encounter problem for not detecting SGW even after installing samsung kies. If you encounter the same problem as me feel free to follow my steps.
1. Download the driver from below links.
a. x86 google Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x86-Download-96692 click http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDo...SB-Driver-for-Windows-x86-Download-96692.html
b. x64 google Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x64-Download-96693 click http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDo...SB-Driver-for-Windows-x64-Download-96693.html
2. unzip the downloaded file to you designated folder.
3. go to device manager in window system
4. select properties on samsung_android device
5. click on update once you received a prompt select browse manually for driver.
6. point it to the extracted folder.
7. there are 3 things you need to install. just point all the unrecognized device to update from the extracted folder.
8. you should have all the driver need to connect SGW to windows.
For the adb shell you can use google (android commander) http://androidcommander.com/ just download it and install. Run the program and you will notice shell command on the tab.
I've tested and it work on my SGW. If it does not work on you please dont complain.
Thanks your sharing

Just a noob question, which should i download for a windows7 32bit machine? my processor is an intel i3, which i know supports 64bit, so i got confused with the x64 and x86 designation.
Thanks!

Hi, on the subject of adb, fastboot, and drivers, here is a pretty good tutorial, with pics, and fully illustrated.
I used it, on Windows 7, and it works very well.

and learn some about it for a change
As much as all the hard work that's gone into the toolkit is appreciated but I find doing it manually a lot more educational. It can come handy if you need to make changes. Check out my signature for rooting with Linux Ubuntu/Mint.

So again, need more information
In the fifth post from that link describes the type of info you may want to share
Also in the post I linked you has a link for how to install Ubuntu on the g2 which seems to be what you want
You need to explain all what you have tried and where you got stuck along with all info pertinent about your phone
Without this all I can do is write a guide for you which you have already read so... Yeah

(What it looks like after copied over to the SD Card)
1) Again, make sure you have your Android smartphone/tablet “rooted”!
2) You must have Android SDK installed or have access to adb.exe.
3) Make sure your Android phone/tablet is in debugging mode. Go to Settings->Applications->Development and make sure USB Debugging is checked ON.
4) Connect your Android device to your computer via USB cable and set the USB mode to “Just Charge”.
5) Your Android device should be recognized as “ADB Device” under Device Manager. If not, install appropriate drivers.
For all HTC Android smartphones/tablets (such as G2 Phone, Nexus One), you can download Windows drivers here:
HTC Windows 64-bit driver download – Click Here to Download Driver
HTC Windows 32-bit driver download – Click Here to Download Driver
6) Open up a command prompt by typing “cmd” under Start->Search programs and files.
7) Browse to your SDK directory where you installed the Android SDK:
8) Then go into platform-tools directory:
9) Type “adb devices” to double-check your Android device is recognized.
In this example, I used an HTC G2 Phone, which shows up at “HT09SR204261″. This is fine. However, if you get an empty device, that means you didn’t install the drivers for your phone/tablet correctly. (Go back to #5)
im stuck at step 10 Type “adb shell” to enter the Android shell.
"Then type “su” to enter super user mode, then type “cd /sdcard” and “cd ubuntu” to enter the ubuntu directory in your SD card of your Android device." ← this part
So your device is recognized by adb, then you type
adb shell
And you see a # after su
But when you type
cd /sdcard
cd ubuntu
What happens, does it say something like no file or directory? This would mean there is no file on SD card named Ubuntu
Maybe if you can copy and paste all input/output from cmd here

Same as windows but easier, do sudo apt-get install android-tools then just follow the other guides on here but don't do the parts where it says to install adb and setup drivers
If android-tools doesn't work (can't remember the exact package name as I don't use Debian distros) then try phablet-tools

I think he's talking about the fact that the scripts to root are windows scripts.
Maybe I can look at the windows-script and transfer the commands to Linux. But I would be glad, if someone can name the needed commands. The last Asus device, I have rooted under Linux, was a Nexus 7 and this was very easy, same with a LG P880. It is always an adventure, when you have to fear you brick the phone.
This is already installed:
ii android-tools-adb 4.2.2+git20130218-3ubuntu23 amd64 Android Debug Bridge CLI tool
ii android-tools-fastboot 4.2.2+git20130218-3ubuntu23 amd64 Android Fastboot protocol CLI tool

But I don't know, if it is necessary to define udev-rules.

Moving from Windows to Linux

Hi,
I'm considering moving ftom Windows to Linux and i want to know if there are any alternative of the tools we used to bring the life to our Zen like xFSTK, fastboot, adb, Asus adb driver.
And does the command in linux different from Windows like
fastboot flash recovery ....img
adb reboot recovery
And the last one, can we run Windows batch tools like ZE55XML Modder (bat) on linux?
The distro is ElementaryOS

Hi,
1. Fastboot and ADB:
Code:
sudo apt-get install android-tools-adb android-tools-fastboot
However, fastboot needs you to run it as superuser so it could detect the device:
Code:
sudo fastboot -any command here-
2. Asus ADB Driver isn't needed.
3. xFSTK alternative? I don't know.
4. Is there a bash script on it?

Don't use Wine. Instead, make a Virtual Machine and install Windows over it with their drivers.
